We found a new sushi spot for sure. We loved our whole experience. We sat at the sushi bar because we didn’t make a reservation- probably a good idea to do so on a busy Saturday. We got the dumplings 10/10, salmon 4 ways 10/10, some of the best salmon I’ve ever had! “R u kidding me” was so delish 10/10 and of course everything was fresh. Next time I want to try the uni toast but I’m pregnant and avoiding Tuna but chef recommend that for sure. The ONLY thing I would rate 8/10 was the shrimp fried rice. My boyfriend munched it up and thought it was very generous with shrimp. I guess I would have liked to see more to the dish like some scallions or one other thing than just shrimp & rice. Overall we are excited to go back & highly recommend.

BEST SUSHI OF MY LIFE… in Cali We love yellowtail so we asked IKU our sushi chef to please make anything with that specific fish, he was happy to do so and also recommended a fatty tuna called ChuToro. it was DELICIOUSLY INCREDIBLE,Melted in you mouth soooo good!. We could not stop ordering it, forever changed our lives when we go to sushi restaurants. Thank you to the staff, the service was amazing, glasses were full at all times. I can’t wait to visit SD again just to come back and hang out with our IKU.

This place is my favorite sushi places in San Diego. I love how they don’t use imitation crab for the rolls. Their oysters, so flavorful with the Yuzu. Definitely recommend getting reservations!

Azuki is ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL! My friend and I flew in and were able to make a reservation for the bar seating at the last minute, and we are so glad we were able to and that we were sat at the bar area. Tommy, the bartender, was absolutely phenomenal. He was neither overbearing nor cold and was great in making recommendations on both choice of menu items and the portion sizes. He was friendly and made the dining experience simply delightful. Food was all really amazing as well. Oysters - Fresh and loved the yuzu gelee. This was also where Tommy went above and beyond, and he gave us some wasabi cream that usually goes on cocktails saying they go really well with oysters. And boy, was he right. That was perfect. Adventurous set - Everything from presentation to flavor was amazing. Every piece of fish was beyond I could have imagined. And frying the fish and eating it as sort of a in between with some drinks was great. Wagyu roll - This was really good as well. And unlike many other wagyu rolls I've had, the meat on top was not torched to hell, so I could taste the meat's actual flavor. Karaage - Delightful. Great as an appetizer or just as a side snack to have with alcohol. Not overcooked and chicken was nice and juicy. bluefin four ways - this was great. I loved having this one as it allows you to taste various different parts. Drinks - We got sapporo draft and all the highballs. All the highballs were amazing as well. I'm usually not a huge highball fan, but I thought I might try it and I am glad I did. My favorite one was the Tokyo Sunset. From start to finish, it was a great experience, one that I will be more than happy to return to whenever I am in San Diego (and recommend to my friends living here). We will be checking out their sister store Kinme Omakase tonight, and our experience here has made us beyond excited for it. Thank you again Tommy.

Came here after a day at the San Diego zoo and arrived a few minutes before they opened. When they did open, they asked if anyone had reservations and those that did were taken in, the rest of us had to wait and see if they'd have room for us with their reservations. They did! We were led upstairs to a pretty outdoor area with a nice breeze and heat lamps when it got too chilly. Service was a bit slow but they were pretty packed so not gonna complain, it was still friendly and helpful service. The food was freaking amazing! We are both sushi lovers but had obviously never been anywhere this good because wow. Everything was super fresh and tasty and they didn't drown their rolls in too much sauce. I'm usually a sauce and cream cheese guy with my sushi but the lack of sauce and total absence of cream cheese didn't phase me. We both loved this place and will be back. Receipt is just so you have an idea of what to expect if you take your special someone.

Azuki has the gift. The best sushi in San Diego. The love and respect for food and service is undeniable. If you eat here you will always be glad you did. If I lived local I’d set up a weekly reservation to fill my life with joy.

Let me begin by saying before I ate here, I had an extensive conversation with someone from their establishment via Instagram. They are very helpful and knowledgeable and guided me to an exceptional experience. What made it exceptional? Let me begin with the quality of the fish is excellent. Every bite was fresh and flavorful. Each piece of nigiri was cut with great precision and proportionally appropriate to the amount of rice it was served on. If you’ve never tried hamachi collage before, I suggest you do. Although it was an appetizer, we used it as a shared entree. To finish the meal, the fried banana desert was probably one of the best endings I’ve ever had. Thanks again for a wonderful experience. Def will return.

Was amazing. Oysters were good. Roll was really good. Toro was amazing. And weirdly, the miso was the best I've ever had including Japan. Crazy. The sushi rice was Rockstar, which is usually not even notable.

Food is great here, but what really surprised us were the veggie options. Pretty sure that’s the best veggie sushi we’ve had so far. The vibe is there in every way and is supported by both staff and design. It was a good decision to stop here, if you’re in San Diego, stop by!

Best sushi I’ve ever been treated to! My husband and I came here for a honeymoon dinner and this place did not disappoint! Their selection of nigiri was unique and superb quality. Staff was very friendly and able to give us recommendations. I will never visit any other sushi spot when I come to San Diego - the quality here has ruined me!

C
Chris Castro

The service is always top notch. Discovered this place about a little over a year ago and this place never disappoints. By far the freshest sushi I've ever had! Keep up all the great work in 2023. Compliments to the Chef Kevin and the amazing hospitality by the staff and the GM - Dennis. Below are some pics of the NYE menu items I ordered. The decor /lighting allows for both intimate moments along with inviting for group celebrations. They have three seating areas: the top floor, main floor / sushi bar, and outside patio (with pleanty of heaters). *This restaurant is the place to be so I strongly encourage you try to snag a reservation.

Literally the best food and experience of our entire lives get the crispy rice with spicy tuna and the Kobe roll you will cry because you love it so much and ask for Isaac as your bartender

Best Sushi I’ve had in San Diego. The fish was fresh and our chef Daisuke prepared everything to perfection.

My friends and I walked up a few minutes before opening on a Friday and got a table and was absolutely lucky because the food was fantastic and so many people were being turned away with only 14 tables available. This place is elegant and charming and a great place for a date or simply really good food. Probably the best sushi I've had in a very long time. Don't skip out on the amazing cocktails. The kakuni -pork belly dish - was so tender and melted in my mouth, still salivating thinking of the dish. If I can visit only one place in San Diego - Azuki would be hands down my place.

I one hundred percent love this place! We came here for a Saturday dinner and of course it’s better to make a reservation beforehand. The foods here are amazing, we ordered a bunch of different things. My favorites are Uni Nigiri, sardine nigiri, lobster rolls, pon hama, and crispy rice & spicy tuna. All the fishes are beautifully cut and super fresh. The sushi roll flavor is very well balanced with a unique taste. Here’s service is nice too. I highly recommend you come here to check out if you love Japanese food.

A gem. The atmosphere was quaint but the food is amazing. I'm not a sushi guy but everything I had was awesome. Our waitress Stephanie and her support staff were spot on and attentive. For those who don't like sushi they have a menu of amazing items created by Chef Kevin Alvarado that will knock your socks off. He is amazing. A great time had by all.

T

We are glad we came for an early dinner. Walked in at 5pm since we are unable to get a table reservation earlier. We were told to wait 25 minutes so we took a nice walk at the Balboa park. All the items we ordered are good.

Small cozy place with delicious and high quality sushi and sashimi. We all loved the lobster roll sushi! The wine list is limited but does a good job at pairing the sushi. Service was fast and friendly.

Decadent ambience and experience. My boyfriend and I luckily got the last seats by the sushi bar at 7:00 before it became reservation only and an hour standby wait. The setting was intimate and cozy. Our sushi chef had wonderful recommendations. He recommended chu-toro (medium fatty tuna) and the blue fin toro roll. We ordered the chef's special and he gave us 5 different styles of fish with thick cuts (12 pieces) for $38. Such a great deal with AMAZING melt in your mouth quality. We tried the Black Sea bream, smoked albacore, salmon, medium fatty tuna, and yellowtail. I've never had a better yellowtail in my life. The chef said he sliced right from the fish's belly. So impressed & happy with our experience. The bluefin roll had three different types of tuna, pickles, and was really yummy. Would definitely recommend this roll and this place for an unforgettable date night.

So glad I finally got to try Azuki!! Came here with my fiancé and two friends and we were all very impressed. After visiting Japan a few months ago (all 4 of us), our standards for sushi have greatly risen (duh) and after a very poor and unimpressive experience at Sushi Ota (seriously, don’t go) this place ticked all of our boxes. Inventive rolls but also classics, each one delicious in their own right. Their chu toro was perfect. Their matcha cocktail thing was so interesting and good. The presentation of everything was beautiful and the interior of the restaurant (upstairs in the back) was suuuuuch a vibe! Our server, Ava, was wonderful. She even brought out complementary ice cream with fried rolled bananas (!!) to celebrate our engagement. We will absolutely be back. Worth every penny, truly.

One of the best fresh delicious tasting sushi I have ever had. Will come back again. Absolutely amazing. Prices were reasonable for the quality. I have been to many omakase restaurants that were high caliber and I’d say this one ranks pretty high up there for me. Dessert was amazing too!

My wife and I ate here for a wedding anniversary and shared a delicious experience. As expected, the sushi was fresh and melted in my mouth. Fatty tuna, fatty yellowtail, fatty salmon. You can't go wrong. The pork belly had a tasty ponzu sauce, was tender and the shishito peppers nice and mild (except for the last one that had some heat!) Evan took care of us and was a sweetheart. Thanks for a great dinner!

One of my new faves in Bankers Hill! The food is fresh-tasting and delicious with a great ambiance to boot. Not only is the sushi good, but the shared plates are also very yummy. We tried the miso eggplant, the dumplings, karage, and the fried rice. Specially rolls are pretty creative flavor wise! There’s also a variety of well crafted cocktails and highballs. On top of all that the service was really warm and attentive. Must try!

I live in Japan 40 years and co invested and ran a chain of 500 sushi shops. My expectations for Azuku Sushi were low, but I was totally wrong. I was just totally surprised by the amazing quality and authenticity of the food, the friendly and professional service, and the excellent drink and sake list. The sushi neta is huge and very high quality. The Otoro is perfect. The "San Diego" local uni is a good as anything I have had in Japan. The menu had Hamachi Kama which we could not resist and it was prepared perfectly. On top of the food menu, Azuki has the best Japanese whisky list in San Diego. And served perfectly with high quality clear ice. Be careful, the top shelf is all the cheapie fake Japanese whiskies but the bottom shelf is the real thing. It doesn't get better than Azuki Sushi. It's perfect!!

C
Cassidy Stokes

Outdoor seating only while remodeling, but they had good heaters. Absolutely EXCELLENT sushi - couldn't have been more pleased. Service staff was efficient, if not very friendly/chatty - but that may have been due to our seating being towards the end of the evening. Expensive, but worth ever dollar. Don't skip out on the sushimi!

B
Becky Tran

I'm surprised this place isn't more popular! I loved everything about it: the aesthetic, the food, the service. It was a top-notch experience. We got the uni toast, chirashi bowl, and r u kidding me? roll. I HIGHLY recommend EVERYTHING we got. It's a perfect blend of experimental and traditional/bare/raw/fresh food. It was also one of my friend's birthday - we brought in our own dessert but they said if we ate it on the premises, they would charge us a $20 cake fee. We opted not to do that. But they gave us generous scoops of delicious ice cream and deep fried, crunchy bananas.

We went to have an anniversary dinner and what better way than sushi? Everything was delicious. A bit on the pricy side but it was worth the experience. Our server was lovely and gave suggestions around the area on what to do. She also checked up on us often. Sake toro was a nice cut of fatty salmon. The karaage with sweet pickles was a delicious appetizer; the pickles had a refreshing taste on the palate. The crispy rice was definitely a favorite as well. Kakuni was okay. The stardust roll is something very different I have had. Which was not bad. By the border and Kobe are a favorite. House smoked salmon skin probably would taste better as a hand roll. I didn’t take a photo of the drinks but i got a strawberry kush 6/10 and a matcha man 10/10 a drink I have never had before with a unique wasabi flavor to it. I would definitely go back.

My first time here and it became an immediate staple. You can taste the quality of their ingredients and they pay a whole lot of attention to presenting the sushi well. I’m mostly vegetarian but I still loved it because they had enough options to get me full such as the miso glazed eggplant and the salad and the one vegan roll! The mochi cake and ice cream were amazing! Simple but amazing!

G
Genesis Jazmine

Where do I start? I’ll start with our server Kevin, he was so great; very knowledgeable and gave superb recommendations! We ordered the crispy rice tuna, gold standard and halibut sashimi. Everything was amazing and definitely recommend eating here if you get a chance! Also thank you to all the staff for making my birthday dinner so much more enjoyable! I will definitely be coming back for another special occasion.

We had an awesome night at Azuki Sushi Lounge! We at the sushi bar and ordered a few apps from the kitchen, a sushi roll, the chef’s daily choice sashimi and the trout sashimi. The trout sashimi was a standout – I hadn’t had it before, but will definitely be coming back for it! They were out of the wagyu beef sashimi so plan to try that and the salmon skin salad when we come back. The cocktails were on point – really creative and delicious. Super friendly and fast service, despite how busy it was, but definitely recommend making a reservation because this place fills up fast! Will be back for sure.

Azuki sushi serves creative rolls with a great selection of rolls in the midst of Bankers Hill. They have an extensive list of whiskey, but I ultimately chose the green tea that they sourced from Paru. We started off with one of the best salt and pepper karaage I’ve ever had. It had the perfect amount of crispiness and the chicken is so tender and perfectly juicy. Out of all the specialty rolls we got, my personal highlight is the bluefin toro-taku roll.

A lovely and delicious place to enjoy sushi with friends or have a date night. Get the "R U Kidding Me?" and once you see it, you'll know why it's named that! Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious, and the service was great!

We visited Azuki from SF. The place was cozy and decorated with modern simple interior. The food was really good. I ordered chicken teriyaki for my kids which was not too sweet and very juicy tender. It came with lots of different vegies which was very tasty. Sushi was very fresh and decent size. I recommend this place!

L
Luis Mendez-Stacker

The atmosphere was amazing, it really made you feel welcomed. The service was great. I sat at the sushi bar and out waitress and chef was amazing they both made the experience wonderful. And the food is indescribable. It was amazing and well made/prepared. I normally don’t like eel but they cooked it in a way that tasted awesome. I would 100% recommend this place.

Having eaten sushi all over the US and Japan, I have to say Azuki is really legit. Totally impressed, glad I stopped in here while I was in San Diego. Great fish list for nigiri, and really nicely put together. If you order a handful of things at once, I like that it comes out one small plate at a time - it's all best when you eat it right after it's been made. Don't miss out on some great, harder-to-find things like barracuda! For atmosphere, it's a good little spot; alive and energetic but not overbearing. I definitely recommend sitting at the sushi bar and having the interactive conversation, recommendations, etc. with the chefs. I'll have to come back next time I'm in town. ごちそうさまでした!

You want sushi in San Diego, this is where you should go. Make a reservation if you don’t want to wait forever. Quality of fish was amazingly fresh! Two star for service because there was a hair in our dessert.

L
Lia DiRico

I came here last night with two friends that have been here before and assured me that it would be great - they were right! Everything about the meal was amazing, the service was fast and efficient, and although prices were high, the quality of the food and service was worth it. We ordered tons of different fish off the menu including two specialty rolls - the r u kidding me? roll and the scorpion roll were just *chef's kiss*. I did not take a photo of the scorpion roll though. The server recommended this phenomenal bottle of sake too, the name was Shichida and it was probably the best sake I've ever had. I can't even choose what my favorite dish was because they were all so fresh and light and with aji dish they take the head and tail back to the kitchen when you're done with the bigger bites and deep fry it and you can then have a second, crunchier experience! The bill was around $400 but we were expecting that, it was no surprise. Will absolutely be recommending this place to my friends!

Wow! Sushi slaaaappppssssss. The freshness of the ingredients and the flavor profiles you experience is just unbelievable. When you sit at the sushi bar, you get to literally watch them make it right in front of you while talking to the chefs. Drink was also good. Really really enjoyed this place. Glad I made it here before I left SD.

Tonight was our first time at Azuki. We made reservations for outdoor seating. Aside from tonight being the perfect temperature to eat outside, they also have heaters that you can adjust the temperature on. The ambiance was quiet and romantic. Perfect for a relaxing date. We ate their steamed pork dumplings, shiitake miso soup, salmon four ways nigiri, by the boarder and kobe rolls. My favorite was the kobe roll. The touch of truffle aioli was very tasty. I definitely recommend this roll. We also had the hot sake and a Sapporo, which never disappoint.

S

Manager Kevin and the team at Azuki are amazing. The food was the best sushi we have ever had and the waiters ensured we got the best food and service. Will be dreaming about the miso cod, short ribs, chefs nigiri, hibiscus tea, the list goes on! Every dish was fresh, well seasoned, and delicious. Cannot wait to come back. Don’t forget to make a reservation!

Had an incredible experience last night while visiting from Massachusetts. Want to thank your staff and most importantly our Sushi Chef Brandon for taking such good care of us. World class service, atmosphere and the food was of the highest quality. Will highly recommend and we’ll be back again when visiting the area.

Everything they say about this place is true! The food is amazing and well worth the prices!!! Made a reservation so when we got there we were seated right away! The server was very tentative and always on top of it when it came to refilling my water. The inside was very cozy and had a dim relaxing lighting. The only thing I didn’t like was the placement of the restaurant.. waiting for the one bathroom that had, I found myself staring in front of the kitchen door and I really felt in the way as people passed by to go upstairs. So I came here twice in once week! We ordered the Spicy Edamame, the Shigoku Oysters, the Are You Kidding Me Roll, the Kobe Roll, the Sunshine Roll, the Kurobuta Pork and Chive Dumplings, the bluefin Omakase, Grilled Beef Short Ribs and Unagi. The spicy edamame was so delicious! It was a well balanced spicy flavor. The Oysters were so fresh and delicious as well. The are you kidding me roll was amazing! So fresh and the thin fried onions on top really brought it all together. The Kobe Roll was totally worth the price! It was amazing and the Kobe was torched perfectly on top! The sunshine roll was amazing, it had fresh salmon on top and literally melted in my mouth. The Kurobuta pork and chive dumplings were good, well flavored. The blue fin omakase was so elevated and every bite was something more and more flavorful and I could taste all the quality in every bite! I’m so impressed! The grilled beef short ribs were amazing! So impressive, wow! We didn’t expect the cooked food to be just as good! And the Unagi was torched perfectly with a slight crispy around it! Very delicious! Over all this place blew my mind over and over again!

Absolutely the freshest and tastiest sushi I’ve had in a while. Went with chef’s tasting menu, which was a very good decision. Every piece was great and we got try lots of different fish. I’d recommend sitting at a table because the sushi bar is a bit uncomfortable. Also, make a reservation because they can definitely fill up.

F
Fahad Emad

This is a gem of a place! The atmosphere is welcoming and cozy, and everything came out fresh and flavorful. The chef’s selection feels crafted with care. From the unique roll combinations to the classic nigiri, everything was delicious- but the main star is the one and only “R U kidding me”. Highly recommend for sushi lovers!”

Azuki Sushi is an elevated sushi restaurant located in Banker’s Hill by Balboa park. I visited this restaurant twice within a month and I had a great experience each time. We had an indoor reservation the first time and for the second, we only were able to snag a patio table. Try to get your reservations early so you can get a table inside because it was super cold outside (thankfully they had heaters). Also try to come earlier than your reservation time because parking can be a nightmare in that area depending on when you go. Ambiance/Service: The inside looks elevated with modern decorations and lower light. There are two levels inside. The outdoor patio gave the same vibe but it was just so cold and the tables are on a slanted hill. Service both times were great. Our servers were attentive and made sure to check up on us periodically. Food and drinks came out quickly. Food: -Crispy Rice and Spicy Tuna ($18): 4 pieces; perfect appetizer, I’d get this one again. -Karaage ($15): our waiter recommended us a different kind of karaage other than the Salt and Pepper listed on the menu. I forgot how he described it but it was delicious! He mentioned that it’s a little spicy but I didn’t notice the spice that much. Chicken was crispy. -Classic Sashimi ($38): came with 12 pieces and each piece was a good size but honestly, I wouldn’t order again. -Kobe Roll ($28): the seared A5 wagyu on top really gave it a nice flavor and texture. This is my favorite roll -r u kidding me? Roll ($28): served much differently than other rolls— in a bowl and topped with a biiggg heap of flash fried leeks. The leeks were delicious but once we got to the roll itself, it was kind of meh in my opinion. -Sunshine Roll ($22): salmon roll with avocado and salmon on top. It tasted pretty good but I didn’t like that some pieces had mostly avocado on top and others had mostly salmon. I would have appreciated that it was more even on all pieces. -Scorpion Roll ($21): loved the crispiness of tempura soft-shell crab on top. Comes with 6 large pieces. This is my 2nd favorite after Kobe. -Uni Toast ($25): only 2 pieces; uni with chopped toro, prosciutto, truffle aioli. There was so much toro on the toast that it overpowered the uni. I’d skip this one next time, as I don’t believe it was worth the price. Overall: After my two great experiences, I know that I’ll continue to come back to Azuki Sushi!

This is now my husbands go to sushi spot. Once you eat here you won’t be able to go to other cheaper sushi spots. The fish is so good. I got 3 different rolls and my favorite was one with albacore. My husband enjoyed his plate of different fish. We also ordered the shrimp fried rice for my kids and it was so delicious. Overall if you love sushi and enjoy the different types of fish this is the spot for you! Nothing cheap about it but you’ll see it’s worth it when you taste the fish quality. Make a reservation for sure or else you will be sitting outside in the street.

Fresh flavorful straightforward sushi place. Modern clean decor. Attentive staff and friendly sushi chefs. Would recommend sitting at the sushi bar to order straight from chefs. My favorites were the wagu and salmon. For dessert a stuffed banana with red bean and black sesame ice cream.

The BEST. The Adventurous sashimi platter is a MUST. The uni toast is magical and their blue fin tuna is out of this world.

A friend recommended this place and it did not disappoint. Every dish was delicious especially the uni on the daily special which was absolutely worth trying. The pork was also full of flavor. The only downside was the service. One female staff member wearing a small cap was super friendly and attentive, but the rest of the team felt a bit distant as if they didn’t want to be approached. A little more energy and engagement from the staff would definitely enhance the experience.

My husband and I have only been here twice because we're from out of town, but after the first time, we were already hooked. The fish is such good quality. We haven't been to Japan, but I can only imagine that it mirrors the quality! It's so delicious and fresh. Also, we love the cocktails. Both times, we ordered the Yuzu Collins. It's just a great drink.

Drew Detwiler

Just a well-done restaurant overall. I’ve eaten here twice now and both times I’ve left so impressed with the quality of fish and experience. The tuna belly was some of the most tender sashimi I’ve ever had, and I’ve eaten Michelin in Japan.

Whenever I visit my daughter in San Diego, I make the point to make a dinner reservation at Azuki Sushi Lounge. The Kobe roll alone is worth the trip! Tonight we dined in the second floor dining room. It was much more comfortable than the breezy street seating we experienced our first visit. I had the Kobe and the Bonzai this time. My daughter, unagi fan that she is, had the Super California. The Bonzai features shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, asparagus and has the crunchy contrast of crispy taro slices and crispy sweet potato slices on top. The Kobe was as delicious as I remembered; black tiger prawn, avocado, tempura onion, topped with seared wagyu. Another excellent meal at Azuki Sushi Lounge!

G
Gaby Sanchez

Service, food and drinks were all exceptional! We tried the Kakuni (pork belly - melts in your mouth and is shareable), spicy garlic edemame, Azuki Mule and Momo Yuzu cocktails, By the Border roll, Stardust roll (this was my favorite!), Kobe roll, Lobster roll and a few orders of hamachi. Sitting outside on the street was not the best idea - the tables are extremely close together with hardly any space (and we had an annoying couple next to us) and random people walk by as the patio is detached from the restaurant. They do have patio heaters, but because it was a little windy, they didn't seem to do much. Overall, what a great first time experience. We will be back!

Delicious sashimi! I’ve been here a couple of times, and while their sushi is good, their sashimi is even better. This last time, we didn’t have a reservation, but they were able to seat our party of three after a short wait. A reservation is definitely recommended. The staff is nice, and the ambiance inside the restaurant is pleasant. (Also, the cocktails are fun!) Since it’s close to Balboa Park, there is plenty of nearby parking. The only downside is the restroom layout: the restrooms are right next to the stairs, so you often bump into people going in or out. There are also only two restrooms.

This was such a cute spot. The service was so nice and the ambience was great. The quality of the fish was really good. We enjoyed every single piece. Down to the dessert. We chose the adventurous option for the sashimi and it’s definitely worth it in my opinion.

Azuki Sushi is one of San Diego’s best spots for high-quality, creative Japanese cuisine. The spicy tuna crispy rice is a must-order perfectly crunchy on the outside with just the right amount of heat and freshness in every bite. The miso cod is equally incredible tender, buttery, and full of flavor that melts in your mouth. The presentation is beautiful, the atmosphere is modern and inviting, and the service is consistently friendly and attentive. Whether you’re sitting at the bar or dining on the patio, every visit feels special. If you’re looking for a sushi spot that delivers both quality and creativity, Azuki never disappoints. The spicy tuna crispy rice and miso cod alone are worth the visit!

Sushi here is out of this world. Having traveled all over the country every month and eating sushi at least once a week, we’ve tried and eaten at so many sushi restaurants and Azuki is one of the absolute best restaurants. Came here twice, sat at the sushi bar and was served out of this world top quality nigiri and sashimi - from uni to ikura to variety of fatty tuna, everything was cut perfectly and tasted fresh and delicious. Fatty tuna combo roll just melts in your mouth. Cocktails good, service good, ambience good.

Very nice outdoor seating. Waiter was very friendly and helpful. True a few rolls which were delicious. The short rib plate was delicious as well.

Without exaggeration, this is the best sushi my wife and I have had in the 10 years we’ve lived in California (Los Angeles and San Diego). The appetizers with interesting and delicious, and the rolls fresh and inventive. While we didn’t try the sashimi, the table next to us did and it looked amazing (they confirmed it tasted even better). Additionally, the cocktails were spectacular (when I asked about my whiskey sour, the bartender confirmed that they make their own lemon cordial that gave the drink its unique personality). Our server was friendly and attentive and gladly helped with suggestions (even when it meant ordering less food). We will be back often-it’s a gem!

This is an exceptional eatery with truly outstanding sushi. The food is prepared in an authentic style, elevated with a dramatic flair that perfectly complements the atmosphere. We opted for the chef’s choice tasting, and every selection was superb. The uni, in particular, was absolutely incredible. Whiskey enthusiasts will feel right at home the Japanese selection is excellent and thoughtfully curated. While this is not an inexpensive dining experience, the quality, execution, and overall experience make it well worth the price.

Really enjoyed Azuki Sushi! Went with a friend of mine on weekday and no reservations but got seated very quickly. Great music, chill vibes, good food, and awesome service. Great vegetarian options. Drinks were delicious and got the job done! Our server, Isaac, was super friendly and attentive, and we had some fun conversations with him. Definitely a spot I’d go back to!

Ordered to go curbside pick up, delicious food but rolls are on the tiny side. Photographed are the green roll $16 and stardust rolls $22. Taste is great, size is disappointing. Only the scorpion roll is regular spider roll size

DOR:42724 WOW! This place was really good. 👌 would return back in a heartbeat! We had what felt like half the fish menu! Did not care about the bill on this one. The sashimi and nagiri were 9 outta 10 and had about 5 rolls, all 9 outta 10 quality price tho. Gotta pay to play. Please see the pixs for more info! 0 problems giving it my seal of approval #gorditoapproved #fatboyapproved

After hearing good reviews from friends and seeing the mass amounts of reviews on Yelp, I finally had a chance to try out Azuki Sushi for myself. We booked a reservation on Yelp just a few days out, which was surprising that it wasn't filled up already. However, the rest of the times were gone by day of. Would highly recommend making a reservation and not take any chances! - PARKING - Street parking only, although there are several adjacent streets that are walking distance from the restaurant. - SERVICE/ENVIRONMENT - There was tons of traffic so I called ahead to make sure it would be ok if we were a few minutes late, and they let us know there's a 15 minute leeway time. We got there 5 minutes before the cut off and were seated in the upstairs area. Once we sat down, I saw there was a bug in my water cup which definitely wasn't the best impression to start off on. We got our orders in and food came fairly quick, although some appetizers were oddly spaced out. The rest of the meal went well, and service was attentive. My friend did notice one of the employees scaling down the stairs without any care and almost hit her in the face while he was swinging down the handrails... not sure if work is the best place for that type of behavior? - FOOD/DRINK - Tranquili-Tea ($14.00): Such beautiful presentation!!! I was in love with the drink right when it came to the table with the gorgeous flower in a elegant cup. The drink wasn't too strong taste-wise which is honestly perfect for me! Loved the mix of flavors, was super easy to drink and enjoy. Miso Glazed Eggplant ($12.00): 3 halves of Eggplant, all fairly small in respect to normal sized Eggplants. I do think the flavor was very tasty, but the portion size left me wanting more. Worth a try though! Hamachi Kama ($18.00): This has got to be the biggest Kama I've ever gotten! Was honestly shocked at how big the piece of Kama was, but I did not complain. The meat itself was very juicy, and easy to pick off pieces. Miso Black Cod ($19.00): Similar to the Eggplant, portion size was disappointing but the flavor was top notch. Cod itself was super moist and flaky, not dry at all. Wish they gave more Gai Lan too! Crispy Rice + Spicy Tuna ($16.00): Pretty large chunks of Spicy Tuna on top of the Crispy Rice. I do think the Crispy Rice seemed a bit stale, not sure if they had it waiting to be served but it did not give a great crunch - rather a sticky chew. Sushi + Sashimi: We mainly ordered a la carte and got the following fish: Ikura ($10.00 - Sashimi, 5pcs): Served on top of a Shiso Leaf and Cucumber. We did order some rice on the side in case it proved to be too overwhelming, but the Salmon Roe was very fresh and delicious! Hamachi Toro ($9.00 - Nigiri, 2pcs): Similar to the Sake Toro, very buttery and fatty. This did have a bit more of a fishy taste than I'd like. Engawa ($9.00 - Nigiri, 2pcs): I was surprised to see this listed as it's usually a "if you know, you know" type of deal where you have to specifically ask the chef for this. Chefs in the past have let us know how limited this is, and it proved to be true as Azuki had to let us know they only had 2 pieces left to serve. Very interesting texture - I would try it at least once and see what you think of it! Hotate ($7.00 - Nigiri, 2pcs): Surprised at the price of this, as they're usually more expensive! They have excellent quality of Scallop here, no resistance at all when you bite through it! Spicy Scallop Roll ($11.00, 8pcs): Similar to their Scallop Nigiri, the Scallops in the roll were amazing quality. Usually when a restaurant says "spicy" anything, it's very mild - however here, the togarashi spice on top definitely gives a kick! - OVERALL - Pleasantly surprised at the quality of fish that is being served here! If a friend were to ask for a recommendation for a casual sushi spot with sharable plates, I would give Azuki as an option! However, for more traditional and Omakaze experiences, I would have to suggest my other spots.

Pretty good sushi and decent price. Didn’t feel very authentically Japanese , but a good date spot. Recommend getting a reservation in advance, it does get packed quickly. We enjoyed the tuna four ways which was a very popular order

One of the higher rated sushi spots in San Diego. Service was great and so was the quality. Kind of on the pricey side, and I wasn't in love with the specialty rolls that I ordered. They had a lot going on with them. Wish I would have stuck with a couple of the classic hand rolls to offset the elaborate specialty rolls. I'd go back to give it another try.

Very Fresh and Delicious Sashimi! Their signature rolls are scrumptious! Service was friendly and efficient. The only negative experience were flies flying around while we were dining which were a bit annoying. Otherwise, great spot!

We sat outside on the patio which was just a sidewalk with tables. People just crowded around the sidewalk. The server was nice. The sushi cuts were generous but not amazing. The clam miso soup was surprisingly delicious.

High quality American-style sushi. Hit and miss in terms of authenticity and flavors. I recommend the eel. Overall good, but maybe not worth the long wait or the price.

Really solid sushi, just kitchen was a little slow the night we went. Got our apps after sushi and ordered them a good 10 mins before. Charging $1.50 extra for ice on a whiskey order is tacky too, just throw it in the price or don’t charge for it.

This place is great for the most part. We had quite a few items on the menu and overall we enjoyed them. The A5 wagyu was disappointing since it was swimming in sesame oil which overpowered the taste. The otoro and bluefin was excellent. The super dragon roll might be my favorite roll in SD right now. The service was just ok and the wait for a table even with a reservation was a little long. They keep their pre-plated ginger and wasabi uncovered out in the open air outside for the patio tables which is pretty gross. I noticed that while waiting for our table. It's a public sidewalk and it should be covered. I'd come back for the super dragon roll but not much else. Edit for next visit: Service is still pretty bad. I think I had a busser come to my table once the entire time we were there. The server came pretty sparingly also. It's pretty annoying to just have dirty plates stacked up on your table for long periods of time and then to not even have your table cleared when you order dessert.

The service and ambience were good - music was a touch loud. We ordered the Oysters, Wagyu roll, the R U kidding me roll, some Nigri, and drinks. The oysters did not taste fresh - one had a flavor so rotten my partner nearly gagged. Skip the oysters. The Wagyu roll has an overwhelming taste of sesame oil. R U Kidding me roll was good - overhyped in my opinion. The Nigri were good and drinks weren't anything special. Overall an okay experience.

Grabbed dinner her with a friend. We had a reservation and sat at the sushi bar. Food and cocktails were solid (dessert was mediocre) but service severely lacking. You order your sushi from the sushi chef and drinks and other food from a server. Both the chef and server were cold and unenthusiastic. Neither checked on us during our meal despite us ordering drinks and three courses. I ordered a nigiri set and the chef didn’t even bother to tell me what fish I was being served - I had to ask. I also had to ask for them to clear our plates so we didn’t have to eat our desert on top of our soy sauce. They weren’t extremely busy nor did they seem understaffed. Not really worth returning for the price.

Today I want to share an experience I had. The hostess explained that due to the rain they lost their outdoor space, leaving very limited indoor seating, so they couldn’t take walk-ins. I completely understand the challenge, but having worked for years in a very busy, fully booked restaurant, I know there are always ways to offer alternatives instead of simply turning guests away. Even something like: “I can book you for an hour later,” or “If a reservation doesn’t show, we’ll be happy to seat you,” would have kept the excitement alive. Especially when a guest sees they could book a table on OpenTable just 1hour later—it feels inconsistent.

If you’re lucky enough to make it off the sidewalk and actually speak to a hostess, you might get the privilege of spending more than 12 minutes ordering before last call. We had a reservation for two at 8:45 PM and weren’t seated until 9:25 — nearly 40 minutes of standing outside without so much as a greeting. Let me be clear: the fish quality at Azuki is exceptional — on par with Michelin-level establishments I’ve had the pleasure of dining at. And that’s exactly why this experience was so disappointing. Once we were finally seated, our server rushed us through the entire meal. Every dish arrived almost simultaneously, creating more stress than enjoyment. Even the basics were mishandled — miso soup, traditionally served at the start of the meal, arrived as our third or fourth course. The service felt careless and chaotic, completely undermining the sophistication of the food. We were essentially forced to speed-eat a high-end sushi dinner in under 30 minutes — not exactly the anniversary evening I had in mind. I left with an angry date and a bad taste in my mouth, and it wasn’t from the fish. Azuki, you have the product — now match it with service that respects the food and your guests’ time. Until then, I can’t in good faith recommend this place to anyone.

I love this place but if you have a party of 6+ get ready to wait up to an extra hour to get seated. I’ve come here multiple times with bigger parties and we normally have to wait an extra 30 min, but on a Saturday night my party had to wait an extra hour for a party of 6, then had to rush to order because last call was basically as soon as we sat. Implement a seat time limit so others don’t miss their reservation or don’t overbook!

S
SLB

We went there for dinner. Ordered the “ adventurous” sashimi board , with shishisto peppers and a shrimp friend rice. The peppers and rice came first. We then waited another 25 mins for the sashimi board to arrive! We had eaten the rice and peppers and were full by then! And the sashimi board for $145 was definitely not not worth the money or the wait! Hot sake was good, shrimp rice was tasty.

Buen lugar para conversar sin problema alguno, el personal es muy amable, el costo por platillo es caro, porciones pequeñas, les recomiendo pedir algo extra.

The raw bar was very good quality and tasty. The raw chefs were super friendly and knowledgeable. We had the sunshine roll, salmon sashimi, kakuni, uni toast, and the blue crab roll. However the service from our server was absolutely awful. She was very inattentive, we were waiting ages for our drink and just to order an appetizer, and for the bill. She said no more than 10 words to us all night. Ruined what was supposed to be a lovely dinner!

I have been coming to Azuki for 15 years. The wait staff is awesome, the service is great, and it’s got great food - but the outdoor seating is awful! You are on a hill, sitting sideways and slanted, and it’s very uncomfortable. “Banker’s Hill” is the name of the neighborhood. How about a minor quality fix to make it, you know, level. It’s like eating while sitting on a teeter totter. Whoever made the final decision that having customers sit on a slanted hill was not in their right mind or trying to cut costs, and this place isn’t cheap, so the place should do better. Basically if you don’t get a seat inside, it’s not worth the trip. If you have the slightest back problem, this poor seating arrangement will accentuate it and you will not enjoy your meal. If you don’t have a back problem, you may start to have them after sitting there, it’s that bad.

Been a loyal customer for years, I drive 2 hours from LA to visit this place. Today that changed due the terrible service provided by KEVIN the manager, placed an order for 2 rolls of sushi almost $50, on the phone I asked for eel and spicy mayo sauce and the staff said yes of course with friendly tone. I pick up the order and it's missing the sauce so my husband goes to ask for it and while he's speaking with the host he gets interrupted by Kevin and gets told he has to pay extra for the sauce. I then go back inside and ask another host for the sauce and while he's gladly getting me the sauce Kevin interrupts and says i have to pay for the sauce, he was so childish, disrespectful and the worst staff I have ever seen. None of the staff had a problem providing sauces and in all the years I've been here have never had prior issues, was just here in my birthday 2 months ago so even if it's a new policy he could have made exception considering it's 2 rolls of sushi worth almost $50. Kevin kept asking me "so do you want your order or not" of course with his terrible service i just got my money back, I hope to the owner it's worth losing the $50, years of loyalty even during the pandemic, and future visits for over a packet of eel and spicy mayo sauce.

One of the worst, if not the worst, sushi restaurant in San Diego. Low quality raw material, poorly prepared sushi rice (sticky and cold). It's so americanized that the only Japanese thing left is the name. Save yourself the pain and go to a more authentic place, plenty to choose from in this city

M

Recently visited Azuki Sushi and unfortunately, it was a pretty disappointing experience. After being seated, we waited for about 15 minutes before anyone even came by to greet us, which definitely set the tone for the night. When we finally did get to order, we found out they were out of almost half of the things we wanted (nigiri chef’s special, uni toast). And the waiting just continued. It took about 20 minutes to get our first appetizer, which was just okay, and then another half hour for the next appetizer. By the time we got our sashimi, it had been well over 1.5 hrs. I asked about our soups- seemed like they forgot them entirely and just grabbed them last minute. (Btw the restaurant didn’t even look busy) Overall, we spent about $220 for a meal that felt mediocre at best. The service was off and the food was just okay. Definitely disappointing, considering I was ready for a great experience after seeing reviews on social media. Would not recommend trying until operations significantly improves
