Honestly some of the best bang for your buck you'll ever get in san diego, let alone a japanese restaurant. 10 bucks for a bento box with 6 shumai, teryaki chicken and rice and a salad is insane
Only place a go for Sushi in San Diego. Awesome friendly staff that will have you smiling. Great food and fresh fish. I have 0 complaints so please check it out. The yellowtail coller and salmon coller are a good option.
Absolutely love this sushi spot, great prices, creative rolls, and always have friendly and quick service when on a time crunch!
Amazing service from the entire staff, food was off the charts! Best udon I have had this side of the Pacific, will be going back again and again. Prices were well below what the quality of food was at.
I come here frequently because the staff are kind and genuine. The food is extremely tasty and affordable. I like the variety that they have and the option to use soy paper instead of seaweed in their sushi rolls. I usually order the special A which comes with chicken teriyaki, salad with citrus sauce, small appetizer, and rice. If I'm feeling particularly hungry, I also order the Las Vegas Roll, which is one of their premium rolls and I usually don't see this roll at other places. So it is a unique and tasty restaurant that I highly recommend you try.
The best sushi I've ever had! Chiba has my favorite roll as well, the Corona Roll (ironic only now after COVID-19). Small and intimate restaurant. I will keep coming back!
O-M-G I have been to so many Sushi restaurants in my day but this little Gem is Amazing!! This Florida Boy is happy happy!
Solid hole in the wall Japanese food. Great service from the waitress. They have Japanese beer in both big and small bottles so it makes the experience damn good. Nothing beats a Sopporro and sushi. They have a pretty good lunch deal. A must if your into hole in the wall Asian places. They do take out so there is a lot of people who do that. For me it's all about having a beer at the sushi bar and a couple rolls.
Dynamite roll to die for! Its our go to sushi place. Fresh sushi everytime we have gone. I also appreciate that their rolls aren't ridiculously overpriced allowing their patrons to enjoy quality sushi at a fair price. Go early as their is limited seating and parking.
Good food, ice water is filtered, clean restroom, plenty parking
This spot is quaint it's a bit small but it's cozy it's Monday daughter's favorite spot I've enjoyed it on occasion and we've actually held her 21st birthday party there. The sake served hot or cold and then wasabi is good and the prices are really cost effective.
Feel so lucky to live just round the corner from this place. Amazing sushi. Top notch! Always great service too! Highly recommend!
We love this place. Extremely fast service, cheap, and delicious. What more could you ask for in a sushi place? The guy rolling the rolls behind the counter is great.
This is my wife and daughters favorite sushi restaurant in the city and though we have a half dozen sushi restaurants in our neighborhood, they drive 6 miles to come here. I'm a vegetarian and there are limited options for me, but the staff is always friendly and the service is excellent.
I've been coming here since I was a little kid. I don't come often, but I love this place. It hasn't changed much, but that's a good thing. My bf and I had a great time, the sushi chef overheard me talking about being a long time customer and took very good care of us. The lemon roll is my favorite and we also ordered a caterpillar roll and salmon skin hand rolls. Everything was delicious and reminded me that I should eat here more often.
Perfect lunch spot. Very friendly good service, fresh delicious food, unbelievably good prices. We split a bowl of udon noodle soup and it filled us both up for $10.00!
I came here for a quick lunch one day, and it has since become an all time favorite. Service was so welcoming and the food was delicious. I will definitely be coming back soon, and frequently.
I swear their lemon sushi roll is THE BEST! I have tried many and all kinds from different places and none compare. Price and portion are also pretty good!
We absolutely loved the teriyaki sauce!! The food quality is excellent. Nice "family owned" atmosphere. Only complaint is that the egg rolls are basically spring rolls, which we don't care for.
Chiba has combined great tasting Japanese food with great affordable prices! An Oyakudon Bowl and salad for $9.75? A domestic beer for $2.95? What?! Those are amazing prices these days! Thank you, Chiba! You have so many choices too! I'll definitely be going again and again!
Been coming here for years. Food is awesome and I love the rice bowls and spicy crab and tempura shrimp rolls. But their whole menu is pretty good. Worth every penny. Only bad is the parking. Other than that...great place!
Absolute best sushi not just in San Diego but all of Southern California! Always fresh, never disappointing. Best combination of flavors! And the prices are beyond reasonable. Outstanding service! This is always our number one go to when we are craving. Sometimes it's multiple times a week! :-) if you haven't had even a basic roll from this place, you are missing out.
UPDATE 2025: Still my go to for sushi. They keep me fat and happy lol I've been going here over 20 years. My grandmother used to take me here at least once a week to two times or three times a month. The people there are awesome, and so is the food.
10/10 food and 100/10 for service. Special thanks to Phi honestly the best server in San Diego! Recommended and made some bomb food.
Hidden gem, the sushi here is amazing! Service was good, fish quality was excellent. This will be my new go to sushi in San Diego.
Good food, top drawer ingredients, professionally prepared, pleasant atmosphere, friendly service, quiet location. We really enjoyed the sushi and the experience.
Delicious! The Chiba noodle soup was wonderful & comes with gyoza, shrimp tempura, a small salad & is filled with good things like chicken, fish cake, surimi, & snaky udon noodles. My son had Ginger Chicken that also came with lots of delicious things! Just yummy!
Food is super good, staff was very friendly and inside the restaurant is very nice, though they did forget my sake in the order, luckly I had a spare bottle at home.
I always hated the term "Hidden gem" but this place is exactly that; fresh fish, healthy portions, affordable prices, and the nicest sushi chefs ever. Tucked away in a quiet strip mall right off the 15, it really is a hidden gem.

Chiba sushi was the reason I fell in love with sushi! My personal faves include the Las Vegas rolls and the Hawaiian rolls. Anytime we are in SD, this is a must for our family. We also really appreciate their affordable teriyaki kids bowl.
Best sushi in San Diego hands down. Great prices, decent portions, and amazing staff! Always so welcoming and helpful when we come in. Been going here for over 10 years, so sad they closed their second location but I'm glad the OG is still standing and it deserves to stay up for as long as possible. Go to sushi place to recommend. The food is incredible, personally love the yakisoba and bento selections. Their sushi rolls are also great priced compared to every other sushi place here. Love love love, if I could rate higher I would 🍱🍜🍣🌟
Love this place . The food is really good and nice reasonable priced. For two people we usually pay $40-$50 , when I go it’s not that busy which tells me not everyone knows how great this place is. With all the expensive sushi places these days it’s nice to know I can get a great meal without going broke

This is my go to spot for fresh fish and tasty rolls. Service could be a little better as it gets busy they are less attentive. Food order comes out a little scattered too. Decent place for a party of 4-6. Anything larger can get awkward.
I love this place. So every time I'm visiting, I make sure to stop by. The pizza roll is my favorite! Only reason I took a star away was on my last visit other than the pizza roll the rest was just okay, not as amazing as I remember :(
This has turned into my quick go to spot when I’m at work for lunch. The staff here is friendly and the food is always fresh & warm. The Vegas rolls are my absolute favorite here .
Hole-in-the-hole place serving decent Japanese food in large portions at great prices. They managed to keep their prices low and portions good without sacrificing quality over many years. The salmon kama (cheek) was very tender on the inside and had crispy edges. It came with much salad and steamed rice. The $12.95 price is definitely unbeatable. The ginger chicken was tender and there’s a large bowl of chicken and mushrooms over rice, with a very tasty sauce.
Just discovered our local Japanese izakaya, Chiba! Prices are fantastic! And we were happily surprised the food was prepared well with food ingredients. The salmon teriyaki plate was so much food for a great price, salmon cooked perfectly, not overdone, and a big portion. Seafood ramen broth was delicious, though these noodles are not my favorite. Spicy salmon roll, solid. Seaweed salad, solid. And can't go wrong with large beers or large sake for around $6! Excellent service as well. Overall this is a go-to spot for us to take the family out, won't break the bank and we can get our foodie fix.
Great place to come for pretty good sushi, and it comes out fast! We were seated right away, and the sushi came out very quick even before my husband's teriyaki chicken combo. The crunchy roll was good. The teriyaki chucken was decent and plentiful. Their apple saki is delicious!
The fish was well priced and fresh. The restaurant is on the smaller side. We had a fairly large sized party of 8 people (7 adults and one infant) we squeezed in but it didn't leave much room for others. Staff was a little too relaxed. Had to keep getting their attention even though it was not to busy during our visit.
Got special A and was so full after eating half of it. It was great. Glad we decided to try a new place in the area.

Food was decent, fresh sashimi. Service was courteous but the food took far too long. The atmosphere was no frills. Price was average for a local spot.Overall an unremarkable experience

Maybe I just visited on an off day, but the service was incredibly slow, the sushi was about the same quality as what I'd get at the grocery store, and the ramen wasn't like any ramen I've had elsewhere. I was very disappointed and surprised at the high ratings others have given.
We come here like twice a year for the last five years and I always forget to review. This place is a solid 3 star average restaurant. It’s not bad but I always think it’ll get better and we would give it another try but each time, it has failed me and they are just average. They used to have two locations but now they are down to just this location. Always friendly and quick service. The parking lot can be busy on game day at McGreggors. They have two assign spaces in front. We got spicy edamame, bbq wings which tasted like teriyaki wings because it was so sweet, lemon roll and baked lobster roll. The lemon roll was refreshing with a hint of citrus. Any of the baked rolls are good. Our past favorites have been the dynamite and pizza roll. There are tables inside and outside.

This place has been around a long time. I used to live in the neighborhood two decades ago. I remember it being somewhat flavorful. I popped in today because I remembered having a decent lunch there however it is dated. It has not been improved upon. It looks the same as it did a couple decades ago. The menu is typical. I ordered a basic shrimp to pearl roll. The Panko felt raw, not toasted just overall.

I'm starting to strongly dislike this place as they are cheap liars. Their menu always describes a roll with it fillings a topping and when you get it it all most never has the topping sauces. The first time I thought it was just forgotten , but now I realize they are just ripping off their customers , I've been dumb enough to let this fly over 3 times over the past 2 years but im totally over it. Never coming back.... They have a right to change their items and ingredients, but they've had more than enough time to take it off the menu but they don't the leave it there and mislead people and serve you a dry ass roll. Don't get me wrong, I love all sushi, nigiri, sashimi, all of it ....but when I want a crazy smothered " fun" roll and you have it listed on the menu and I'm paying for it.... You should be serving customers what they order as it reads on the menu . ...or change the menu and be cheap and tell customers they have to pay for their toppings.
The service was better than the food. The fried rice looked like it came out of a can and the crunchy sushi roll had no flavor. The chicken wings tasted weird. I was so upset after I got done eating.
Usually I really enjoy this place but I decided to go outside of my comfort zone from the normal bento combination platter that I get and I got the Hawaiian roll which said it was deep fried and it’s not and very lackluster of flavor and then the cucumber salad was very gross Had some weird noodle like texture probably seaweed but it didn’t taste like normal cucumber salad with the dressing already mixed so unfortunately it was a miss this time
If you don’t like the taste of fish or having any flavor but want good looking sushi, then this is the place for you. It looks great on the plate. I didn’t realize you could have rolls with so much color and look appetizing but have absolutely 0 flavor. Waste of time and money. Great place to take your picky child if you want to introduce them because they can’t say anything about the taste. But, at least the staff was friendly.
