I’ve eaten at the OG Jikasei Mensho in Tokyo, and somehow this spot in SF holds its own. The flavors genuinely compare. The GKO Vegan is my forever order. It’s unapologetically garlicky, deeply savory, and completely umami-packed in that way that makes you pause mid-bite. It’s comforting but bold. I’ve tried to branch out, but I always come back to it. The Vegan Tantanmen is also excellent, rich, nutty, and satisfying. The Miso is solid, but probably my least favorite of the three. Something has to be last. There was a month when I had dinner here almost every week. No regrets. If another ramen snob tells you there’s better ramen in SF, believe them. But also believe me. Then go eat as much ramen as you can, because honestly, why not? 🍜
Mensho Tokyo SF is a cute little ramen spot in the Tenderloin. Went here by 5pm on a Tuesday, and was able to get easy seating for two people. Street parking was difficult to find, but thankfully there was a parking garage right next to the restaurant (Temple Garage). By the time we left by 6pm, there was a long line out the door on this rainy day. Food speaks for itself. Ordered: Spicy Enoki chips Corn wings A5 Wagyu sushi Signature Spicy Toripaitan Ramen Spicy Sichuan Pepper Style Vegan Miso Ramen (With a side of chashu pork and ajitama egg) Absolutely loved our appetizers! Was surprised that the corn was sweet, considering we’re in the middle of winter. Wagyu sushi was fun and delicious - pretty sure it was real wasabi instead of horseradish-wasabi. Ok so for ramen - Their signature ramen was playful, with their rich and creamy broth. This was our first time trying duck chashu. Usually not a fan of duck, but this was good! LOVEDDDD the fried burdock root in this. Will plan to order extra next time, if possible. We also tried their Spicy Vegan Miso ramen. **disclosure: I am not a vegan.** But wanted to see this style of ramen because the reviews kept raving about how much people loved their Vegan options. && it does not disappoint! I was surprised by the delicately creamy, sesame & porcini mushroom broth. The noodles are perfectly chewy. My only negative thing is that the Sichuan Pepper Style makes the broth taste saltier than it actually is. When I come back, will plan to order the non-spicy version. Other than that - I can see why this little hole in the wall made the Michelin list. Will plan to come back and order: Corn wings Signature Spicy Toripaitan Ramen Vegan Miso Ramen w side of ajtima egg & pork chashu
Amazing vegan ramen and the vegan fried chicken was delicious! I got the vegan miso ramen and my husband got the vegan tantanmen. Both delicious and well- presented. I love the energy of this place and the servers were efficient and friendly. There’s a line for a reason, don’t miss out!
Expect the wait time around 30-60mins but the ramen was worth the wait. Vegan GKO- 5/5 (go for it if you like strong garlic flavor) Vegan Tantanben- 5/5( Creamy and normal spice level) Corn- 4/5 Portion size is large and you need to order at-least one ramen each person so order your sides accordingly!
Mensho Tokyo SF is truly one of the standout places in the city for anyone who loves ramen 🍜. It’s not just another noodle shop — it feels genuinely unique and deeply authentic, the kind of spot where you can tell the chefs care about craft, flavor, and experience 🎌. Because of its popularity, I ended up waiting in line for a little over an hour ⏳ before getting in. Honestly, the wait itself becomes part of the ritual; everyone in line knows they’re about to enjoy something special. Once inside, the service moves quickly ⚡. After placing my order, the food arrived much faster than I expected, especially considering how busy the restaurant was. I ordered the spicy VGKO 🌶️, the spicy enoki mushroom 🍄, and a Japanese beer 🍺 to go with it. I usually have a pretty high tolerance for spicy and hot foods, but the heat level of the spicy VGKO caught me off guard. It’s intense — delicious, but definitely not for the faint of heart 🔥. If you’re thinking of ordering the super spicy level, just be prepared. Overall, Mensho Tokyo SF delivers a memorable ramen experience with bold flavors, efficient service, and a vibe that makes the wait worthwhile ⭐. I’d absolutely return — though next time, I might think twice before going for the highest spice level.
We waited about an hour on a Saturday evening, but as always, it was well worth it. The food here is fantastic—my top picks are the Lamb Ramen, Enoki Spicy Chips, and the Miso Butter Ramen. Each dish is packed with flavor and never disappoints. Also, if you enjoy sake, their Mensho sake is incredibly smooth and pairs perfectly with the meal. Definitely a spot I’ll keep coming back to!
Mensho Ramen does not play. The Wagyu beef is so fresh it could file its own taxes, and the broth is richer than half of San Francisco. The line is long but the flavor is disrespectfully good. And yes—my photo basically is their secret menu, because once you try it, you’ll never look at regular ramen the same again.
High quality ramen, made with care and precision, with their own unique signature style topped off with some tasty burdock root chips (I think?) The vegan GKO was a clear winner, creamy spicy and garlic-y of course and fantastic for a vegan ramen, a rare find! The only let down was that they were not serving the Tonkotsu but as per some of the pictures they used to before? I would definitely want to visit again the next time I am in SF.
FOOD WAS AMAZING Got the GKO (mildly spicy). The flavor hits you like a truck but every bite from then on is soothing. Added the egg & duck chashu which were both amazing! Atmosphere is made for community (including seating arrangements). Everyone was hospitable and Sue was an absolute sweet heart (she let us know to come around 9pm and we only waited 15ish minutes to get in. Will definitely be coming back to try another menu item!
Wanted to try this spot because all the reviews. Tried the matcha broth with duck and the vegan tantamen since we don’t eat pork. The duck one is an interesting taste and something you got to try at least once. We prefer the vegan tantamen - it was creamy but not overpowering with crispy veggies. The star was actually the corn appetizer for us though! The location is a bit on the questionable area at night but since there’s a long line and many people - we felt safer. Although the line is long, we only waited for 25 mins and got seated in our own table by the door which we loved. Staffs are very attentive and efficient. Once we got seated, food arrived less than 10 minutes after. They have a rule that each person of the party need to order at least one bowl. The portion is actually great size for us (Indonesian, asian) who are not used to US big portion. I managed to finish the whole bowl!
Omg the ramen here is incredible! The weekend line is insane — we waited 1 hr 45 mins, but it was totally worth it. We tried the spicy vegan ramen and the extra spicy lamb ramen. The vegan one was the star: rich, flavorful, and that garlic bomb taste was unreal. The lamb ramen had great flavor but wasn’t very spicy, even though we ordered extra spicy — more like mild. Still, the overall vibe and quality were amazing. Definitely coming back to try more of their vegan options!
Mensho Tokyo SF is my favorite go-to ramen restaurant ever since I first went in 2022! I take all my friends and family here, and they love it too! My favorites are the Spicy Garlic Knockout with Ajitama, and the Spicy Toripaitan with Ajitama. Everything about the ramen is very delicious: the broth, egg, noodle texture, and toppings! I also like the Enoki Chips appetizer. Service is great, extremely kind and attentive servers! Thank you Mensho for such a great ramen experience!
worth all the hype! mensho tokyo serves a variety of different ramens, all with distinct and top tier flavors. ingredients were fresh and noodles were perfectly chewy. wait around 5:30pm on a friday was only 15mins. overall, even though i’m not a big ramen fan, would highly recommend! pineapple nigori: pleasantly surprised by this sake, strong pineapple notes spicy corn ribs: skippable, decent app but there are better out there. spicy enoki: also skippable spicy signature toripaitan: creamy and flavorful broth, not really spicy, perfect chewy noodles and pork was right amount of fatty spicy GKO: also a delicious ramen and highly enjoyed!
A very positive experience here. I heard there was a line here on the daily and when we got there, we were only the second person before opening. Going before 5 PM on a weekday seems to do the trick.…

Their Michelin Star should speak for the quality, enough said. Easily one of the Top 3 ramen restaurants in the Bayarea! Great food + Great service!
A Strong 4.5, I loved that there are really ton on vegan options, in ramen and sides as well. I went for the spicy Vegan Tantamen ramen and I highly recommend it. The toppings are really good and well thought which is refreshing because most ramen places just add some mushrooms, corn and spring onions and call it a day (esp for vegan ramen) The vegan fried chicken is a MUST try. Do make sure to dunk it in the broth and try it out. The Negatives: 1. The neighborhood is a bit sketchy. When your wait time in the line is more than an hour on average, it really affects the experience. 2. On the pricier side.
The vegan miso ramen was flavorful and comforting. The broth had a rich, savory depth without being overly salty, and the miso base gave it a nice umami kick. The noodles were perfectly cooked—springy and well-textured—and the vegetables were fresh and vibrant. It was a satisfying plant-based option that didn’t feel like it was missing anything.
One of the best ramens in the bay! We had the Spicy Signature Toripaitan and the super spicy G.K.O. Both were flavorful, however the duck chashu was a bit on the rare side and wasn’t the best. Except for that the creamy umami filled spicy broth and all the toppings work well together. We also ordered the spicy fired enoki chips(10/10) and spicy fried corn wings. All the portions are generous and the service on point.
Great Ramen, but average sides. Went to the fabled Ramen shop on a Sunday night for dinner and the queue was about half an hour long. Not too bad. When you are queueing up, they will give you a menu so that you can decide what you’re going to get. Everyone on the table must order a ramen is the rule. The space is tiny, so the seating is pretty intimate. Not great for large group, but worked out well for four of us. Food comes within five minutes, so service is pretty fast. Got the Edamame, which was kind of bland. The whole point of having edamame is to taste the seasoning, salt or spice, but this did not have any. The Enoki chips were crispy, but extremely oily. The Ramen however was amazing. We went for the signature, which came with Chashu and duck with chicken broth, which is very unique. Most places will have a pork broth. The broth was extremely umami and the noodles were chewy and had a bite to them. Also was perfectly spicy and was the perfect portion for one person. Just keep in mind that they don’t have any substitutions. You don’t have any tofu or chicken as protein replacement. Over overall, I would definitely go again, but just get the Ramen this time.

I tried Mazemen. So good taste!\nService is normal.\n\nThe atmosphere of the store was nice, but it was in a dangerous area and I was scared.
I got the VGKO Ramen, and tasted the Vegan Tantanmen. I believe the ramen is alright, but it just wasn't for me. I found it too flavourful (never thought I'd say something like that). Be prepared for waiting in like before you get seated!
Visited Mensho Tokyo SF and ordered the Duck Matcha Ramen with egg. This restaurant offers some unique ramen variations you won't find elsewhere in San Francisco. The Duck Matcha Ramen is visually striking with its green matcha broth and pink duck meat, but the flavor is quite unusual - the matcha soup base creates a taste that's very different from traditional ramen. Interesting to try once, but not something I'd order again. Service was great and staff was attentive. The restaurant space is small with mostly high seating and cubicle-style dividers between tables. Prices are on the higher side across the menu. If you're looking for creative, Instagram-worthy ramen and don't mind paying premium prices, it's worth a visit. Just manage expectations especially on the price if you prefer traditional ramen flavors.

I tried the GKO and the Signature ramen at Mensho Tokyo after hearing all the hype (and knowing it’s Michelin-listed), and overall I left feeling a bit disappointed. First off, be prepared to wait — there’s usually a long line, and the prices are definitely on the higher end. For that cost and wait time, I was expecting something exceptional. The broths are extremely rich and very heavy. Both bowls leaned hard into bold flavors, especially garlic, which felt overpowering at times. On the positive side, they have a solid bottled beer selection and experiment with interesting and creative flavors (like matcha ramen). Overall, I don’t quite get the level of hype. It’s good, but not worth the long wait or premium price in my opinion — especially when there’s better ramen elsewhere in the city.

Went to Mensho Tokyo SF for the first time on a Saturday. We were coming from out of town and were excited to try this place after seeing all the posts on social media. My group arrived around 3:51pm and we were around the 4th group inside. Service was surprisingly super quick. I ordered the Spicy Signature Toripaitan and it came out in less than 5 minutes. This started off being one of the best ramens I’ve ever had. But unfortunately, about a quarter of the way through my bowl, I found a hair in it. It was most definitely not my hair. I didn’t want to make a scene, so I didn’t mention it to the staff, but I immediately lost my appetite. A family member ended up eating the rest of my bowl. I do have a photo for reference. I understand that mistakes can happen, but it was disappointing and affected what had been an otherwise great experience.
