Classic SF joint with great food served classic Hof Brau style. I got the hot pastrami sandwich and it was great. Irish Coffee as good as the original at half the price. Just go. The decor is amazing.
I've been coming here for over 10 years. Still amazing as always, you can never go wrong with the brisket. And their cocktails are amazing too. Fun fact, this is also the historic spot where Metallica asked Jason Newsted to join them in October 1986 🤘🤘
Finally able to revisit this place. Walked into a semi- crowded bar and restaurant with all the locals. Right before a concert nearby as all the old rockers were pregaming. Wonderful crowd and best tasting cuts of meat. Roast beef, bbq brisket and turkey our entourage ordered. Spaghetti, mashed potatoes and salads were our sides, with many other options we wish we could of tried. The bar was hopping, diverse crowd as well. After over eating the place was packed, with always a line for the food. Get here if never been, you'll be back like I plan too.
Great daily specials! Monday was Oxtails in gravy. Very flavorful with a rich slightly sweet sauce that is truly finger licking good! I love their daily specials! The Turkey lunch plate is a favorite of mine.
Whenever we are in the bay area, we try to stop by Tommy's Joynt for something to eat. And after watching DDD, it just was the place we had to try. The food is great and the portion sizes are awesome. All at a great price that won't put a hole in your pocket. Service was awesome and the staff were very friendly. Atmosphere is super cozy and lively at the same time with moderate noise but not overly loud so you can still hear your friends talk with you at your table. Ordering is very similar to a cafeteria setting where you get a tray and order what you want at the counter and the staff make it right there for you. We ordered the corned beef sandwich with Aus Jus and it was awesome. The next time we stop by, we definitely want to try the lamb shank, cause it looks so yummy. Highly recommend you try it when you are in the bay area. You won't regret it.
I went here on Thursday for the first time. I grew up in this city, but never had the chance to go to Tommy’s Joynt. I’m so glad I did. I took my friend here and they got the sloppy Joe sandwich with mashed potatoes and I got a Swiss cheese sandwich, because I am a pescatarian. Food was delicious. Generous portions. Friendly service. We were greeted as soon as we walked in. Tommy’s Joynt has a great, historic atmosphere, in a great location in downtown SF. It’s a San Francisco institution. Glad it’s still around.
Omg I might be late on this review but I kept forgetting the name if this place and I am glad my photo memories helped me cause I will never forget how good the food is. Me and my friend came to Frisco from Sacramento for 420 lol hotel room was not ready so we decided to take a walk before check in. as we were walking we got hungry that's when I spotted this place what stood out was the art on the building it was amazing so we decided to go there. upon walking in we were greeted by the guy cutting the meat is was great to have choices I got Turkey and gravy with mashed potatoes and I believe another side I cant remember but the food was very tasty and delicious meat was tender everything was cooked to perfection I will be visiting Frisco again and I am for sure going back.......
Step back in time to this Barbary Coast Inn. Dark wood interior of booths, tables or Bar seating. Still serving hearty meals by the plate of carved beef, chicken, potatoes, vegetables. cold beer on tap classic cocktails. Reasonable prices and kind of a neighborhood vibe as all kinds of People rolled in at dinner time. Acessible. Did not see any dogs or kids.
I love this joint!! I love the go to the counter and get what you want freshly sliced and delicious 😋. I am a sucker for Thanksgiving dinner and this place delivers deliciously. You have to ask for cranberry sauce but I can forgive that. The stuffing is delicious but I don't care for the texture I like mine less wet. The gravy is divine mashed potatoes are real. The guys behind the counter are great and seem to be used to people not knowing what to order because it all looks so good . The bartenders were great and made excellent suggestions. I have been here multiple times during my visit to San Francisco. Do not miss out on this joint! Get a filling meal at a reasonable price and make sure you do not skip those house made pickles 😋 . I am not a pickle guy but these were exceptional. The charm of this place oozes old school and a no nonsense way of doing things. If you have read this review thank you. You have been great I have been Mike C!!
For what it is, 5 stars. It’s a classic S.F. joint, with a hot plate of healthy food and other options You can walk through the buffet, see and choose from 5 or so meats, combine it with mashed potatoes and or green beans, salad or baked beans, and a sourdough or soft roll; large plate is 18, and small is 13.50. It's a big plate of food, a whole and complete meal, for less than $20. But of course we tip so it's a bit more than that. You order at the buffet and pay there, get your food on a tray and seat yourself. This is an old school diner and bar combo, and it looks it. Cozy.
WHAT A JOINT!!!! Love this place. Its old, gritty and good like I like it. The pastrami is fantastic and the green beans are outstanding. This is a stand up order and seat yourself bar that is a staple to San Fran. They do it right and it is super affordable….two can eat for under $50 without a problem. Its old school with simply spectacular MEATS!!!!!! Its worth the walk.

Portions are hefty and delicious. One of the best places to eat in SF for the $$ and the environment.
Coming here for years. Hope it never changes. Recently I've been priced out of coming here as often, but a sandwich is like 13 bucks and it's just a giant pile of meat.

Very good brisket! And where else are you going to find bison chili? Nice pub-style atmosphere.
Lovely welcome , big portions, very tasty. Authentic San Francisco experience. Met people that had been coming for decades and love the food.

Classic sf spot if you want good bbq and a chill vibe love the music and people. Come and enjoy and don't forget the bar!
Looks like an event - proper American meat and gravy joint. Great brisket and mash, the bbq beans tasted amazing and smelled fantastic the day after too.
The food was fantastic. We ordered beef brisket (a bit fatty), mashed potatoes, green bean veggies, mac salad and a roll. I do like the grunge vintage atmosphere. My only gripe was the rolls and butter being cold, and when I went to use the ladies' restroom to do just a short tinkle...tried to flush but it didn't flush the first time so the 2nd time tried to hold down the handle and it started overflowing with water rushing out of the bottom of the toilet. Yikes!
This is a grungy dive in a grungy part of the city, but if you love food and atmosphere, you need to visit at least once. I got the slim plate with brisket and mashed potatoes, baked beans, and a roll. The first bite of the brisket was amazing - great flavor and tenderness - but it was pretty fatty. The mashed potatoes were good, however the baked beans were undercooked and not well-flavored. The roll was obviously not freshly made. My friend got the brisket sandwich on sourdough and cole slaw and he said both were great. It was the late afternoon and I had a long drive so I did not visit the bar. It was $36.00 for both of us, which is a great price for a late lunch for two in the city. The bathrooms are upstairs at the top of a very narrow, steep staircase, so if you're disabled, you will likely not be able to access them. If you are going for beef and beer, I'd say give it a shot. However, it does look like it hasn't been cleaned or renovated since the 1906 earthquake, and while not visibly dirty inside, it was grungy and run-down. It's also pretty small inside, 4 booths, maybe 15 tables, plus the bar, so it's tight quarters.
This place is known for their salsa lots of variety and it's fresh. I think it's made from scratch whereas many places just buy their salsa and by the tub full. I like their tofu but it cost extra. The only thing I don't like about this place it could be very noisy.
This is a neighborhood gem. They really have the meats! You can choose if you want a meal, sandwich, how much meat, sides, and fixings. This is meat centric, so I wouldn't recommend it for vegetarians. They have very reasonable prices for the quality of food. The place may seem "divish," but for me, it was more charm of times that have passed. Some may say it needs to be remodeled, I think it should stay the same. The staff was very friendly. At a table next to us was a woman who seemed to be homeless. She had a cart full of her belongings next to her table. Despite this, staff sreved her and were kind to her. Many businesses would not have served her. They acknowledged she was a patron and treated her just like anybody else. This shows their true kindness.
What a fun, special, old school atmosphere and hot specials and food! My friend and I enjoyed our spaghetti (sauce is gravy like vs. full on tomato) and juicy meatballs (3). Despite the tempting sandwiches, carving board for meat and side salads, we wanted a homey classic meal and enjoyed it. I preferred my soft roll vs. Sourdough. Take your lunch tray after you order, pay cash or credit (surcharge) then pick a booth or table or bar spot! Would love to come back to have a beer and enjoy the atmosphere. Water cup station and leave your tray when you leave and staff will pick it up. A special place, enjoy!!

First time here and service and food was good. I'd come here again. Got the pastrami classic sandwich. You can get more meat and add sides. There is a full bar too.

3.3/5 for the food. Got the pastrami sandwich on a wheat bread. The restaurant is pretty old and it’s pretty confusing on what to order. The price is decent but I think the food was average and nothing special. Reminds me of langers in LA for the vibes but less cleaner. The old folks at the counter were pretty nice though
If you like meat & gravy you should like this joint. The side dishes we sampled were mashed potatoes and coleslaw. Average taste, nothing special. Personally, not my cup of tea so I rated it neutral.
My family has been coming here the past 25 years & love this SF restaurant! We paid $75 for 3 dinners. I was dissappointed when the corned beef was served dry & rigid. Its usually served fatty w/soft juicy pieces. However the BBQ brisket was delicious! Honestly, we wont be back anytime soon as the place was dirty, especially bathroom and seats *(booths) torn making it uncomfortable & seat covers are filthy. Invest money into your business as your customers deserve a clean environment.
Old school dining. Got the roast beef dinner with mash potatoes. Food was ok but it was just warm. I'm sure it would have been better if it was more hot.
