This is the best food in slo. Might be a little on the expensive side for us students but every now and then it's worth it. I always get the lamb tikka masala and some mango lassi, and they're awesome. The guys working there are super nice too. Went with 3 mates and they gave us 2 sides of naan on the house. I'm greek so it's pretty hard to find food I like in slo, but these guys are No1 with San Luis taqueria being second. Can't recommend Taj palace highly enough.
Was open on Thanksgiving, but super crowded. Service was a bit underwhelming, but they looked understaffed for the number of people who poured in. The food itself was good - we got Keema Naan, Rotis, Raita, Veg Korma and Malai Kofta. Everything tasted good.
My husband and I grabbed a quick to go order here on our way through San Luis Obispo, and it was some of the best Indian food we have ever had! My husband is born and raised in India and he was very impressed. We will definitely return whenever we are in the area again!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️This Indian restaurant is an absolute gem! The flavors burst with authenticity, and each dish is crafted with care and precision. The ambiance is inviting, and the staff is friendly and attentive. Whether you're a fan of spicy curries or mild tikka masalas, there's something for everyone on the menu. I highly recommend trying their garlic naan bread - it's heavenly! A must-visit for any lover of Indian cuisine.
I have been eating at Taj Palace for the last 22 years….. That says it all And I eat there at LEAST once a month Best Indian food in San Luis Obispo!
Delicious food with generous portions and good variety, even if a bit steep. Veggie samosas were crisp, naan was fresh, and the curries were fragrant. Waiter was polite and the turnaround time was reasonable. I suppose you can't rush great food!
Food was amazing, service was also very quick. We were traveling and when we reached almost it was a closing time. But they allowed us which was very heartwarming and I was very thankful to them because we have 2 kids and they were very hungry.they served a food quickly. Rotis was very crispy , sabzi were also very tasteful.
The food was amazing! The mulligatawny soup was just the start to a perfect meal. They offer takeout, which seemed to be a popular option.
Very good authentic punjabi food…. Delicious Food…. A Must visit. Gem of the San Luis Obispo. Owner is Super cool and service is great. Glad to know they are in business at same location over 30 years says it all..
I recently visited the restaurant and had a wonderful experience very warm, attentive and welcoming. The food was delicious offering authentic Indian homestyle flavors at very affordable prices if you’re looking for a place with great customer service and comforting Indian cuisine this spot is definitely worth checking out!
I love the food at Taj Palace. It's delicious, on time, and made to order. My favorite is Mutter Paneer and the peas in it are always top quality with thin shells. Second favorite is Aloo Gobi and Peshwari Naan.
This was my first time dining at an Indian restaurant, and I'd be glad to have dinner here again. Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious! We had the vegetable samosas, the lamb biryani, and the okra masala. The atmosphere during the evening is quite relaxing as well
Taj mahal is my go to indian place here in slo. Food comes out hot and very tasty. I got the chicken tikka masala and the mali cofta which both had very deep flavors and the rice was cooked perfectly. Got a serving of cold rice pudding which was a very tasty desert. 5/5 experience highly recommend
Delicious Indian food at this restaurant. We had Shahi Paneer and Chicken Tikka Masala and they both were amazing. Portion sizes were also good. Servers are very friendly. Their mango lassi is also worth the try. Overall really good place to stop by on road trip of US-1.
The food is THE best. Atmosphere is nothing to holler about, parking is easy... but the food is GREAT, and Raja (host) is awesome. Has never messed up our order. Delicious!!!
One of the best places in SLO for Indian food cravings! The capacity is good, food is awesome with the right kind of spices. Mango lassi is my favourite, their naan is exactly the way a naan should be! Raja Singh is a very kind, warm hearted person, a real Punjabi...! Keep on doing great work guys, you've got a good fan-following in SLO!

Amazing Punjabi/ Indian food. Amrik and Raja Are excellent hosts. Must try if you are in the area.
The food is wonderful. This is a small operation so if you go on a busy night Mr. Singh will be serving you and his family is cooking. Be patient it is worth the wait.
Very authentic Indian food! Everything was delicious and fresh. The server was very attentive and thoughtful in anticipating our needs.
The best Indian food in the area. We come here often. Delicious Garlic Naan, Veggie Samosas, Lamb Saag, Aloo Gobi and all at reasonable prices. Plenty of parking. We love the staff who are welcoming and friendly.

Taj Palace Cuisine of India was a pleasant surprise in a small-town setting. The food was fresh, flavorful, and well-prepared, exceeding expectations. What really stood out was the quick service—our order arrived within minutes without compromising on taste or quality. The menu offers a good selection of Indian dishes, and everything we tried tasted fresh and satisfying. Overall, it’s a great spot for anyone looking for quality Indian food with efficient service, especially in an unexpected location. Ambience was good. Definitely worth stopping by.

Food was delicious though one of the dishes tasted off so we were given a replacement that was very yummy. Overall very good not excellent because portions are a little on the small side considering price and there was only 1 server who was very busy. Not his fault & he did an excellent job handling many tables & many take out orders. We will definitely be back

Indian food is average BUT it is still the best Indian restaurant in SLO. Don't know the reason there aren't very good restaurants in SLO compared to the LA area given SLO is a college town. I always order take-out and in general the food arrives as scheduled.
Do not pay $5 for their small plate of rice - it's a rip off. $11 for most dishes - small portions. Have to pay another $5 for garlic naan bread (do not order rice). Eggplant curry was great. But small portions for takeout via GrubHub.
This place was alright. The food was ok (I usually go for mild, but here I probably would have been fine with medium/spicy). The service could have been better/more attentive. The atmosphere was a little depressing. (Traditional Indian background music played at a low level would be ideal… and maybe some better lighting) I think they are doing a good job but could be doing a bit better. I’d be interested in seeing what other Indian cuisine SLO has to offer next time I’m in town for work.
Food is average below, We tried a couple of veg and non veg items during thaanks giving day. We dont have the option to choose as everything is closed. After 1 hour wait time we got a table around 3:30. MANGO LASSI is watery. Paneer gravy is only Tomato puree, and it's sour. Chicken briyani and mutton gravy taste the same masala. Tandoori chicken has a lot of food color. Overall, I felt it's average below.
Unfortunately I don't think there are any *great* Indian restaurants in SLO (I'm comparing them to restaurants in SoCal and the Bay Area, plus homemade food from my Indian friend), but we do go there occasionally to get our Indian food fix. Probably our favorite thing is the Samosa appetizer, which is super tasty with the two accompanying sauces. We recently ordered chicken tikka, one of my favorite dishes, and it was extremely dry. I can't say whether it was merely overcooked, but it actually made me wonder if it was reheated leftovers from their buffet. It reminded me of reheated leftovers at home. I love that at home, but I don't expect to feel like I'm eating that in a restaurant. Lastly the service is always mediocre. Not horrible, definitely not great, slightly below average, and not particularly friendly.

Shahi paneer is the only dish that worked for us. Butter chicken and chicken Tikka did not live up to the bar. Sauce is almost same with no discerning taste.
Spent more than 1 hour for dinner, they didn’t even serve us water. Biryani was like pulao, serving size was very small ( not enough for 1 person) compared to other Indian restaurants i have visited. No raita served with biryani. Utensils were dirty.
We ordered kulchas, naans, tandoori rotis, veg pilau, baingan barta, veg jalfrezi, dal makhani, shahi paneer, dal soup orange juice etc. Rotis and naans were burnt. Everything else tasted ok. But the service was very rude. There was no water served or at the table. When asked about it, they served water in very dirty plastic jug. Especially, the owner was pretty rude while taking order. The quantity of food is very small for the price we paid. It’s not a good experience.

It was the worst Indian restaurant I have ever been to. The food was tasteless and the hygiene was pathetic. Everything was smelly. We ordered egg biryani and they served egg fried rice. The other dishes were also horrible. Skip this place!
The most horrible restaurant I have ever been to in the US. Mango lassi is watery. Frist we were ordering two separate combo but hotel waiter convinced us to order combo for two. so, We ordered a non-vegetarian dinner for two, and it was written on the menu card that it comes with dal, nun, and kheer. But they didn't serve the dal and kheer. Upon asking, they just replied it's not included (even if it is mentioned in the menu card). The portion they served was too small for two, and for two people, they served just one nun. When asked, they just replied that it comes like that. Just a horrible experience. Don't Visit this place.
Never had such bad taste indian food. Samosa sauces were bad and smelly. Chicken tikka was like chicken salad. No taste of chicken tikka
Horrible, chicken was dry and naan was stale. Owner was defensive. Hard pass, don’t recommend or prefer.
We had to wait to get drinks. He waited on others before us and was already there. Food wasn't that good. He acted like we where not there. He acted very indifferent. The atmosphere was so bad felt like we were not wanted. Very disappointing was there the first time to enjoy some indian food. Won't be coming back due to his indifference.
Food - very less quantity that not enough for one person and taste is also not good. I ordered aloo naan aloo paratha and bullet naan with dal maharani and nothing was as per the expectation. Service - so so so so slow, didn’t serve water until asked. Atmosphere - very sad, prices are at expensive side but not the worth at all.
They say its open but they are closed during noon-afternoon hours. I wasted a lot of time driving to this place only to realize it is closed.
Worst food ever. They serve stale and unhealthy foods. Their food colouring is next level and restaurants and toilets are super dirty. Wasted my money. Would not recommend anyone.

Absolutely Disappointing Experience – Stay Away! This is by far the most unwelcoming and unpleasant Indian restaurant I’ve ever stepped into. The staff was rude, dismissive, and outright biased in the way they treated customers. It felt like they were doing us a favor just by acknowledging us. But the worst part? The food. If you’re looking for authentic Indian cuisine, this is NOT the place. What they serve here is a poor, fake imitation of Indian food — bland, confused, and completely lacking the soul and richness of real Indian flavors. It’s an insult to call this Indian food. If you truly want to experience Indian cuisine, do yourself a favor and skip this place. It’s not worth your time, money, or appetite.
I had a very disappointing experience at this restaurant. The place felt cold and unwelcoming, and there was no AC running during our visit. We ordered chicken biryani and lamb biryani, but unfortunately, neither dish was tasty. To make it worse, raita had to be purchased separately, which is unusual. I also ordered a mango lassi, and it was by far the worst I’ve had – thin in consistency and poor in taste. Service was equally bad. The waiter was inattentive; I had to ask for plates and cutlery myself, and water was never served at all. Overall, both the food and service were far below expectations. I would not recommend this restaurant and definitely will not be returning.
Average food, but the owner/waiter was rude. He threw the menu after we placed the order. We were not even offered water. Do not visit if you value yourself and your time.
We have been visiting this establishment regularly since moving to the Central Coast, initially drawn by its promising menu and convenient location. Unfortunately, over the years, we’ve noticed a steady decline in both the quality and portion size of the food. What’s even more disappointing is the deteriorating customer service. On multiple occasions, we experienced unwelcoming and dismissive behavior from the staff. Most concerning was the apparent preferential treatment shown to certain customers while our family was treated with noticeable disregard — all in plain view. It’s disheartening to see a once-enjoyable place lose its charm due to inconsistent standards and poor hospitality.
Ordered many times from here, but quality of the food seems to be getting worse every time I order. My most recent order of Chicken Tikka Masala tasted so bitter (which is not how it's supposed to taste), tasted almost if it was spoiled and was still served to me anyway. The chicken also had some raw bits, which was a major health hazard. The naans they serve for takeout are very stale and look weeks old. Do not recommend eating here ever.
We ordered dal and chicken tikka . Chicken was not at all cooked , nauseating to eat half cooked chicken and the dal had a stale smell to it . Looks like it was cooked a week ago and was served. Had to trash all the food . Won’t visit again or recommend to others for sure .
