The chicken teriyaki plate is my go-to! I eat here at least once a week and it's always consistent and delicious. Short wait times and the staff is always friendly and conversational.
Love this little gem!! Been going here for years!! Excellent food. Quick, easy and incredibly tasty. The coconut prawn plate is my go to everytime.
The cashier was a very sweet young lady, she worked hard to get orders out and ring orders in. The food was very good, we come here every so often as a family and we always have a wonderful experience
Really good quality food for reasonable price. Generous meat portions. Their coconut shrimp is top notch. Strongly recommend!
We had a great lunch Kula pork & grilled shrimp great rice and wonderful macaroni salad service was good casual atmosphere great prices we will go back again. Loved our lunch
Love the casual atmosphere! Been coming here for years! I recommend it to all my friends! Born and raised in Hawaii and Aloha Grill is by far the best place in town when it comes to authentic Hawaiian-style cuisine! You can order to-go too!!
I stopped by here with a couple of friends the other day. I had always seen it while driving by, but had never before actually checked it out much. Ends up that we all really enjoyed our meals... the meat was delicious and the overall cost was rather reasonable. A bit difficult to park out front; there's really only room for a few cars, but if you can't find a place there, try parking along one of the streets. They're not too busy and it seemed fine. By the way: great POG drink; worth trying. ;)
Delicious Hawaiian food options to choose from. I had the bbq chicken plate and the chicken was nice and tender and full of flavor. I recommend this place if you’re in Santa Cruz and looking for a munchie cure.
The best chicken teriyaki this side of the pacific. Unusually good Mac salad, too, reminds me of the big island.
The food here is very good and the owner, Numa is a great guy. I've worked with him at Soquel high school, and he donated food from the restaurant for our homecoming 2022. All the food I've had here is great.
Great food. Chicken is done perfectly and we often crave their Mac salad. Had the mahi mahi this last time and it was so flakey and tender. The poke was also very good.
Great little restaurant by the beach making close-to-authentic Hawaiian dishes for reasonable prices. To me this a perfect lunchtime spot for a beach day. I got the Kalua and cabbage, and it tastes quite authentic to me. The menu was quite enticing too, definitely going back to try out the ahi poke, and maybe the Chicken katsu or Kalua Sandwich. Highly recommend going for lunch if you're nearby Sunny Cove Beach or Twin Lakes!
If you've never been you are really missing out! Locals hangout with Hawaiian cuisine just like I had on Maui! Generous portions and good prices. Try the pork, try the spam musubi, definitely try the chicken katsu, and if you're lucky there might be some macadamia brownies left!
This place is a staple of my high school life. (Graduated from Cypress) The chicken katsu plate is always my goto dish. So tasty and always worth the treat. The staff who work here are all very kind, quick to help, and offer tasty food at a reasonable price.
Stopped for lunch on the way to San Francisco from Monterey. The Teriyaki chicken was superb. Came with great white rice and macaroni. The chicken was tender and had light and dark meat. Light and fresh.Good vibrations.
Ahi poke was delicious, beef teriyaki sandwich lived up to reputation and the service was lovely as well. also very reasonably priced for under $20 with a pint of draft. will certainly return to enjoy the patio again
Aloha is a Santa Cruz standard, and my favorite spot when I'm looking for quick and easy Hawaiian food. Their Chicken Katsu is terrific (with large portions) and I never thought I liked Spam until I tried their musubi. Also, the Aloha version of POG drink (passion orange guava if you didn't know) is quite delicious and refreshing. I work down the street and come often with my coworkers on our lunch break; it can get busy around lunchtime though so I suggest calling ahead if you're in a hurry. Also good if you want to take it to eat down on the beach at Sunny Cove, which is just down the street.
Good, relatively cheap, food just like I got in Hawaii. Yes, everything comes with two scoops rice one scoop potato salad. The menu is a bit Limited, but everything I've tried has been quite good. The workers in very helpful and friendly, the seating is very limited, and the parking even more so. I would suggest parking somewhere else, and walking or biking in as I believe they have fewer than 10 parking spaces total.
Food was good, Mac salad with a plate order is decent, side orders of Mac salad have an unusual bitter taste. Portions are very big, the only downside is the parking only one way in and out. Employees here are great
Pleasant, informal, with good selection of POKE and select sandwiches. Pleasant indoor eating area, and nice patio area outside with sunny or shady areas to eat at. The restaurant is "pet friendly, " and the atmosphere is very informal. Want a quick lunch? Great choice. SMILES 👍
The house made poké in the fridge is really good. This place is a great traditional style teriyaki house. Family owned and operated. Every time I'm in the Santa cruz area. I always try to stop in for some of the homemade pokè.
Two people can share a plate ! Perfectly cooked meat, Delicious teriyaki (ask for extra sauce)
I come here for the teriyaki salmon plate. Salmon is grilled perfectly every single time, I can't get over it. Mac salad always good, rice always made perfectly.
Stopped here while pasting through Santa Cruz, California. Food is Hawaiian style. I had Teriyaki Shrimp and rice it was excellent. A little pricey and worth every bit. The service is friendly and it has indoor and outdoor dining. Looks like a little hut almost, but nice.
It was great I had a chicken and so did my girlfriend :) very very good. And yummy. Good chow would chow twice or maybe thrice, more. Overall I think the place was super good. However, I accidently grabbed too much soy sauce and someone should have stopped me. But it was still a good experience. Overall it was fantastic.
Everything here is good! Love the ribs and the coconut shrimp is delicious! Everyone is so nice and helpful when you come in!
Our experience was awesome. We love Hawaiian BBQ, just discovered Aloha and this place was AMAZING!! My loco moco was fantastic so flavorful and perfect portion. The cashier was friendly and food came out fast. This is not a "locals only" catered to place, we have never been and the experience was A+
Outdoor dining! Dog friendly! Loco Moco! Hawaiian Sun. Mahalo.
Love love this place, delicious food and friendly service. I would recommend sitting outside if the weather permits it. It's a pretty casual laid-back restaurant meant for quick bites. I always get an order of spam masubi and the seaweed salad. So so tasty! Great spot to grab a quick delicious lunch with a buddy.
Very upsetting, they removed the great roof that had enclosed the patio area which made this place so iconic. Now it lost its charm, its architecture and its vibe.
Really loved the tofu teriyaki and the mac salad was delicious! Service was quick and the girl working was super friendly :)
We ordered just about everything in the menu! And the young woman that works front of house is amazing: warm welcome, chill vibe, support friendly and great recommendations! Their pasta salad was great too! But the chicken katsu stole the show. Seems like EVERYTHING there is good, so you can't go wrong.
The establishment is a surprise, it doesn't look like much but the food is a mind-blowing experience! Very tasty!
Incredible Hawaiian BBQ! So happy that the locals told is about this place. They do the staples incredibly well. Service and food were awesome! We had the Shortribs and the Katsu. Also the Spam Musubi and the fresh Poki. So tasty. Parking sucks! Lol! But it's worth the walk down the street.
Katsu chicken was very fresh. Macaroni salad has the right amount of seasoning. Rice cooked perfectly. Definitely bring me back to middle school in Honolulu. Good job. Will come back again. Waitress was very pleasant.
Solid grill food with a variety of options on the menu. The waitress/cashier was super friendly with explaining the terms. Definitely a warm friendly vibe!
Excellent Pulled Pork (Pig) and great beers on tap along with local favorites. Nice staff too the girl working was extremely helpful and even checked in on us, definitely coming back

I have been eating at Aloha for years! It is hands down my favorite food in town. It's a small store, near the beach, great staff, great menu!
Local, friendly, old school, no frills SC vibe. Highly recommend the fresh catch. Excellent chef, food and service.
I could tell you about the food being solid all the time, I could tell you about the cool little spot and the vibe, but what I’m going to tell you about is Naya (sorry if I misspelled it). Naya is the young woman who has worked the register on a few occasions that I’ve been here. She is awesome. Her energy, her service, and her enthusiasm may be the best I’ve ever seen at a restaurant. She is polite, present, and positive. Whatever she’s getting paid, it probably isn’t enough, (owners: I mean that). The tone she sets and the atmosphere she creates…as a one woman show…is really impressive. I hope she’s there everytime I go in the future.
I've lived in Hawaii for 10 years and was told about this place. Curious as I am and how much I love food, this place takes me back to Hawaii ! This is truly amazing 😍
Highly recommend this restaurant, food was delicious and the staff, specifically Numa was awesome. He helped us out of a tough situation when my son and I came upon his restaurant after losing my phone, debit card and van key (it was swept into the ocean). He let us use his phone to call my husband, gave us a meal, and provided comfort to my son. He remind us that everything we lost was replaceable. We were very grateful to have come upon Aloha Island Grille that night. Thank you Numa!
I just stumbled upon this place, and the kalua pork plate was very authentic! I lived in Hawai'i for 14 years, and it definitely took me back to the islands! Simple decor with authentic island grindz, mahalo Aloha Island Grille 🙏!
The cashier was so sweet and friendly. It was a delicious and homey meal. (Chicken Katsu and Teriyaki Chicken) Reminds me of when my Mom would buy us this while we played at The Cove. So happy they’re still around.
They had good beer and great Hawaiian food, especially the macaroni salad. We had my niece and nephew who are both under 3 y/o and the outdoor seating was accommodating. Everything was fresh and they had a wide selection of Hawaiian juices that everyone loved. I'll be returning for sure! FYI the dining area is under construction but should be done soon. (5/7/2025)
Classic little spot. This food is so delicious never disappoints, and the portions are wonderful! If you haven’t been to, you must try it. It’s delicious.

I'm not in Santa Cruz all that much. That's the conundrum about living in Vallejo: so extremely far from all the great NorCal beaches. Stinson, Pacifica, and Santa Cruz: none of them a mere hop, skip, and jump away. Anyhow, I digress, as I'm veering away from the point of this review. My friends and I had just finished up a boogie board session and we were crazy hungry. We had planned to hit up Pono after the beach, so we headed there... and were gracefully turned away. That, my friends, sucked. No one likes feeling turned away. So I hit up the ol trusty Yelp app and found the Aloha Island Grill. Mad and hungry (mad hungry, son?), we headed there in hopes of some good grub. Upon arriving, I see the line is out the door. Reasonably, I was a bit on the aggravated side as I was getting hungrier by the minute and the prospect of waiting in a line was slightly daunting. Still, the reviews for this place spoke highly of it, so I decided to wait it out. Also, it was very near closing time, so I wasn't sure if they'd still take our order. Fortunately, the long line moved quite briskly upon our arrival. We were able to get our order in. Very friendly servers as well, so very nice and chill. Cute to boot! So here on out, I just had to be patient for a few more minutes to get some food in my now insane stomach. The decor of this place is really nice. You get the total island/surfer town feel upon entering. The walls are chock-full of surf stickers, logos, related signage, and even some boards. There's even TVs overhead that are playing some surf DVDs. Very nice touches in those areas. I was joyous upon the arrival of my food to the table, a mere few minutes after ordering. I had ordered the loco moco and an ala carte order of the teriyaki chicken. The food was nice and hot. First thing I tried was the loco moco. It was good. Well, better than good. It was definitely better than anything you'd get at L&L. Next was the teriyaki. Oh my goodness. This was the best chicken teriyaki I've ever had at a restaurant. Besides being juicy, it was tender and oh so very flavorful. I LOVE that it wasn't just some chicken that was slathered with tons of teriyaki and then flat-top grilled. No no, this was seasoned/marinaded just right and then it was cooked on an actual charcoal grill (YES, I am able to taste the difference, being a master home BBQer of sorts.) That teriyaki was, hands down, the best I've ever had. Any joint, Japanese, Hawaiian, or otherwise, will be hard pressed to make something that tastes better. All in all, I like this place a lot and it absolutely sucks to have to live so far from such a cool joint. Next time I'm in town for some boogie boarding, I'll definitely hit this place up again. A place with great grub that seems to appreciate my business.
Parking can be tight... THE FOOD IS THE BEST HAWAIIAN IN TOWN , Has been for a while now. I recommend the chicken teriyaki meal , Coconut Prawns and their macaroni salad side is great too. Not to expensive. Rite next to the beach.
I split a katsu chicken plate and a tofu plate with another person. Both are very good! I also had a bite of the kalua pork which was good but not AS good. The teriyaki sauce on the tofu was not overpowering like it usually is for me. One note: do not trust the picture of a menu that was posted by another reviewer: that menu is now very outdated. The prices are off, some of the items no longer exist, and white rice can no longer be swapped for brown rice. Sad days.
Decent price for the food, pretty generous portions. I had the Loco Moco and the flavor was lacking. Very underseasoned. The Misubi was fantastic, however. Parking is very limited so make sure you find parking nearby that's not permit required.
The teriyaki chicken was really really good. A plus that you can swap rice for salad so a good option if you are cutting down on carbs. It's a bit under staff as there were only one guy taking all the orders and serving the tables.
Decent but not great. Nothing too special. Food wasn't as flavor-blasted as it could be. Dining room was quite cold to sit in and eat. Very friendly and quick service. 4/5 stars for me.
i probably gotten lucky on my free time to finally checking out this place after moving in town the past year. i got to the diner and it was empty. i mean i like how there was only a couple customers including me. so, when i ordered my food, it looked delightful. loco moco was good and specialized my fries to gravy fries. all the food i had was filling and it was good. not the greatest than others or wouldn't say top best, yet they sure were amazing after devouring 'em. (aug 25, 2021)
If you like local style Hawaiian food this place is pretty legit. I like the chicken teri and katsu combo plate, really good. I’m glad they’ve also got some Hawaiian sun and drinks you’d expect to eat with a meal like this. A can of POG pushes a lunch like this to another level. They usually have macadamia bread or brownies at the counter that are also great.
Pretty good.First time there. Got it to go and they did not drag their feet.I like a bit more sauce on my meat, personally. Had the teriyaki chicken and beef dinners.LOVE the Mac salad. How can you not like a place that serves Spam?
We stayed just a stones throw from here so decided to walk and have dinner. We ordered ahead and walked up and paid. Contactless payments are accepted here. We're decided to stop on the patio and eat our food outside. The food was pretty good. Rice and Mac salad were solid. Great flavor. I got the Teriyaki chicken and katsu combo plate. It was good. Don't expect the katsu sauce to be like "Ono's" it's good, but different. (More like a Teriyaki with A1 mixed in. It's tangy and bold.) Either way, the food was fresh and flavorful. Everyone observed covid protocols and staff was friendly as well.
This was our first time coming to this location and we happened upon it by chance! Definetly not a bad place to grab a quick bite. Unfortunately there's a very limited amount of parking. The food comes out quickly and you have a dine in option outdoors! Aa for the quality of the food I was pleased but not entirely satisfied, the food came out quickly but was a bit cold, the food was also a bit more bland then I was accustomed to having. But all in all, the service was quick and friendly and I have no complaints other then some lackluster flavor. Definetly wouldn't mind coming back!
Our family was searching for a quality Hawaiian restaurant and were not disappointed. The portions were generous, enough to share between two people. We ordered the teriyaki chicken plate, shrimp, and katsu, all of which were delicious. The only area for improvement would be the cleanliness of the patio. There were cobwebs above the tables that could be removed with a pressure washer.
3 1/2 stars. Overall. That being said I only can rate the dish we had partaken. Kayla and fries. According to my reviewer of foods, the shredded pork was seasoned correctly, but not knowing what was additional seasoning were added . This is Way better than L&L imo. Plenty of rice and large pieces of hamburger patties and the decent Although we have a running test we think the patties originated from the Costco burgers patties? Anyway prove me wrong. As always, post wherever the wind takes you.
To start off the service was nice and friendly and very welcoming. Even the vibe was pretty chill. This might just be preference, but had the loco moco and although the burger patties had a nice charbroiled taste to it, it felt like it was lacking in some seasoning. Also a very important part of the loco moco which is the egg; wasn't runny and fully cooked. The gravy itself was okay, nothing really different from other places commonly known to have loco moco.

Dirty, mediocre food, and just an overall poor experience. Haven't improved quality for many years, so I'm not expecting a change anytime soon. Nice bonus: very friendly, nice (and cute) customer service 👍🤷♂️
Not too impressed. Fair to medium decent food. If you're looking for a comparison try the one corner of Homestead and Lawrence in Santa Clara.
The pork was really tasty, he mac salad was void of flavor and the brownie was absolutely atrocious. Kick back atmosphere and cool deck area.
Great looking food! I only wish the food was hot. We received cold food! There's never a good reason to put out warm or cold food to customers! The ribs were rubbery and the chicken only mildly better.
Cosy restaurant with big patio seating. Nice for celebrations and events. The grilled chicken teriyaki with rice was very tasty. Not the best prawns, but not bad either. Go for it if you're out on a concert or something.
Ok food, and I’m a lover of Hawaiian food. Prices are high but typical in these times. Food is a bit salty, kind of like my review. Max salad is good.
Really good Korean style ribs ... sides are nothing special, just cold rice and macaroni salad ... pulled pork and cabbage serving size is huge though. Take my rating with a grain of salt because they say its all about the company ... and it was a cold fish date. But will go back again... alone.
The katsu was tasty, but most of the other food was underwhelming and lacking in flavor. But the katsu was perfectly crispy, and their house-made juice drinks were good.
Salmon was fishy tasting, very boney and under seasoned. One redeeming factor was that it wasn't overcooked, but they needed to use higher heat to give skin a crisp and less time to maintain good meat time. The fishyness is a quality issue either with expiration or refrigeration, boneyness is a prep issue, I've worked with fish over 10 years, and salmon is one of the easiest fish to debone and these were ribs, which shows laziness to me.
Been going here for a long time and it’s been going down hill. Tonight, we got there at 8:30pm, and the bathroom was out of service (couldn’t even wash our hands), our food was packaged to go and the food was ‘eh. Shrimp was burned, moco loco patty was not fresh. Probably the last time we eat there. It’s also always cold. Sad because we like supporting local businesses.
Atmosphere great! Staff too! But my Katsu, rice, fries and were very bland. The Salmon VERY fishy. The poke was good but small.
I’ve heard mixed reviews about Aloha Island Grill so I came to see for myself. Staff were very friendly and the place was clean. I got the Chicken Katsu. The chicken itself was really good however, the Mac salad had zero flavor and smelled like it was going bad. The sauce that came with the chicken Katsu was not bad just not what I was used to. Overall, not a bad experience but I don’t think I’ll come again.
Not sure what happened to the macaroni salad but it tasted different today and smelled borderline rotten. Not sure if they changed the recipe or if it was old. The coconut prawns were also not as good as they normally are. Looks they like renovated the inside a bit and hoping they didnt make management/chef changes that will affect food from hereon out
A dog friendly place! I ordered the grilled catch of the day. It wasn't very good. It wasn't seasoned or anything extra. Just a piece of grilled fish. My daughter ordered the tuna sandwich which was very good. My husband ordered the tofu stir fry which was also very good. The spam musubi appetizer was good.
It is very casual. You can't get more casual. Five of us ate there. The 2 people that got the teriyaki chicken plate liked their food. The rest of us did not like our dinners. (Teriyaki tofu stir fry, grilled shrimp and the 3rd was some sort of fish. I'm not sure what fish though.) I have never had tofu I did not like before. This was a shock to me. It was dry and didn't have flavor, not even tofu flavor 😆. The veggies in the stir fry were not cooked enough. It just really lacked flavor. My SIL said she was warned they do not season the fish. She ate her fish, but wished she had picked the teriyaki chicken too. My niece ate 1 of the shrimp before resorting to just eating the white rice.

This place was once owned by the same owner of the now Pono Hawaiian Grill in Santa Cruz, but the 2 partners went their separate ways and for that I say nothing bad about Aloha because everyone has to have a chance to make it in their own way. Good thing it started the way it did and all parties involved have gone their own way. Only problem with Aloha is the lack of parking spaces.
I don't know what happened to this place. I have been coming here for 6 years and I always get chicken Katzu and the last 3 times it has been pounded too thin and overcooked...like jerky. The portions have gotten smaller also (a lot more of that cabbage filler and a lot less chicken). Very disappointing and i'm bummed i will have to be taking this place of my list.
This place has gone down hill. Ordered a loco moco and the hamburger came to me raw and cold. Complained and they got me another loco moco, this time over cooked and bland as bark! ,This place looks tired and worn and it has lost it’s Aloha. No apologies from staff. Horrible. Will not eat here again.
The 1st thing we saw when we walked into the place was the cashier eating where the food is ready to serve for customers. It was a big turn-off. We didn't have the energy to find another spot to eat at since we had just spent our entire day at the boardwalk. I don't even think the lady washed her hands after stuffing her face and serving us our food. Very unsanitary. The Real Islanders know this is nothing compared to island food. Sorry, but the food was bland. The chicken katsu was very thin and overcooked. The Loco moco beef patty was overcooked as well. The lady didn't even ask how we wanted our eggs cooked. Especially it was for a my child who is a picky eater. My friend had ordered the poke' and it was very salty. Took bad it wasn't filled up either. At the end of it all, we cleaned up our dishes in an already full bus bin. I asked the cashier where we would put our dishes. And she pointed to another full bus bin where another family was dining in. We did what we could to clean up after ourselves. Overall, I don't think I would recommend this spot to anyone. I didn't feel any "aloha spirit!"
both loco moco and kalua pig are quite bland. Portion is big though. Won’t come here again
I used to love this place. Not sure what happened however, food is not so great now!! Kalbi had no flavor just super salty! What a shame, another Santa Cruz restaurant off the list.
Loco moco was highly underseasoned. The gravy is watery. The bathroom needsss repairs badly. The toilet seat was broken and you needed to pull a rope to flush. 🤦♀️
Oh..... very poor service, idon't know if this is coincidence that were minority. Me and my family arrived at afternoon. Waitress and cashier is the same. We waited for an hour. We ordered their special. Some of the guest after us are getting their foods. When i asked about our food. They didn't start making it. It's just a waste of time. Some of the people also didn't got their food in time. One of the guest was saying that his food gets cold because it was sitting at there counter for so long. I know that you have to support locals. But as a restaurant and business owners. You guys have to give you're best service to anyone.the cooks are so sloppy that they drop achicken katsu on the floor. The cook never bothered picking it up. Or cleaning it up. It's so NASTY.. I'll never come back to this restaurant again.
Took a to go order, got the chicken teriyaki. Compared to L&L and Ono Hawaiian …you get half as much and half the taste of a good Hawaiian BBQ dish. I’m very surprised this place is getting 4.5 stars.
I usually liked this place as it’s location is adorable. The staff was nice but I came in with 3 friends and bought 4 meals with drinks , no charge was less than $21 and we always tip well The meals were undercooked literally chewy in the middle. The steak the tuna and the shrimp were INEDIBLE :( and my friends wine tasted like vinegar And. We needed to use the restroom and were told they were out of order I know these things happen but my friends all just flew across the country to be with me and sadly this is their first experience !! I hate to say this but I’m really disappointed.
There was some obnoxious people inside and after we got our overpriced food we did not get any utensils.
I’m updating my review after ordering takeout, and it was a complete disappointment. For $18 a plate, we were given the cheapest, flimsiest plastic containers imaginable, and by the time we got home the food was ice-cold. My son’s $16 teriyaki beef (if you want to call it that) was so dry and tough it could be a called “pile of boot straps.” The service was also completely lackluster, inattentive, and not at all welcoming. This is absolutely unacceptable for food at this price point. We only ordered here because Pono Hawaiian Kitchen was closed, and the comparison isn’t even close—this place doesn’t come close to matching their quality. After this experience, we will never be back.

The food simply wasn't good and the management isn't much better. The staff themselves are friendly, and the location has a Santa Cruz vibe to it, but it doesn't make up for the food quality or price. The first time I went I was unimpressed, and spent quite a lot for what I got. I thought it was a fluke, so I went again. The second time I went the meal was worse than the first time, with undercooked chicken. When I contacted them about the issue I was told the chicken was thigh meat, which is why it was pink, but the meat itself was certainly undercooked. About 10% of what I purchased was edible, either due to flavor or the quality of the cooking itself.
