Our experience at Primrose is the reason why it is worth it to go out to nice dinners. It was more than just great food, it was an entire experience. When we walked in, the manager, Jennifer, was beyond friendly and immediately knew when we said our names that it was our wedding anniversary. Upon being seated we were welcomed with celebratory sparkling wine and a sign that said happy anniversary. Our server, Nick, was absolutely fantastic. He made us feel at home, was fun to talk to, and had great recommendations. Just when we thought the service couldn't be any better, the Sommelier, Tim, came into the picture and was also terrific and fun to chat with. He even suggested a wine from the location where we went on our honeymoon in celebration of our anniversary. This was our third time coming here for a special occasion and it has never disappointed. The food is top tier, the environment is fancy yet lively, and the staff is extremely friendly.
I was blown away by the service at Primrose. The flavor of the dry aged ribeye was absolutely amazing. Everything we ordered was delicious. Can’t wait to go back. Not cheap but worth it. We went for my 10 year anniversary with my beautiful wife. Our friend took made sure we didn’t waste anything : )
Best steaks in steamboat. Wouldn’t bother with any of the “steakhouses” in town. Seriously. Seafood is fresh and quality. Besides the seafood bar menu, anything tataki, hamachi or fish on the menu is worth trying. One of the best wine and alcohol selections in town and great service - thanks Jake! Everything is definitely on the pricey side but well worth a visit for special occasions vs the other expensive steakhouses and high end restaurants in town.
Amazing dinner experience. Ordered a 45 day dry aged bone in ribeye with a table side carving by the owner and chef. The beef is cooked to rare then held in a smoke dome with bourbon barrel chips that add a very unique flavor. The bourbon and wine selection is insane 😲 and at reasonable prices.
This place is truly a gem! This the second year and third visit I have made to Primrose. The food is amazing. The Whiskey selection is incredible. Collin and his crew aim to please and always go above and beyond. So personable and such a wonderful atmosphere. I will always go back each trip I make to Steamboat! I also am really excited to try their other restaurant “Cypress” next time I am in town.
Quinn knew the menu and provided the perfect recommendations. She timed our order perfectly by describing the bites, and crumbing the table before our entree came out. She brought cocktails before our appetizer bites came out then brought beer immediately after the entree landed. The lamb meatballs were delightful. I would come back and ask for her.
We stopped here for drinks before dinner in the area, and were glad we did! Without a reservation, we were able to get a high top in the bar area, adjacent to the open kitchen. We enjoyed several house cocktails, especially The Primrose and Les Fleur Au Vent. All were well made/balanced and decently priced. We didn’t eat given we were on our way to dinner, but the food coming out of the kitchen all looked great!
Was off to a rocky start when we arrived on time to our reservation, and no one greeted us standing at the door for 3-4 minutes. Once seated again it took longer than usual for our waitress to come over. The Menu we got in the restaurant did not match the menu online so we were a little disappointed we couldn't get some dishes we really were excited for we saw online the night before. Food was OUTSTANDING. Drinks were great too. Overall we were so happy we chose Primrose and definitely would be back. The social hour menu has so many great deals, but I highly recommend the Peaches and burrata as an app and the wagyu Denver steak as an entree. We will definitely be back next time we are in town.
This is one of our favorite places to go for date night in our town. We like to sit at one of the bars. Get a few happy drinks, share a burger and the chips & dip! We always have great service and really enjoy ourselves. Lots of gluten free options as well. The chef has a great menu that is always changing with fresh items. Highly recommend!
Absolute gem in steamboat— please visit! Great varied menu, service and well executed dishes from mains to sides and dessert— sit at the chef bar to watch all the action. Really impressed with the wine menu and options by the glass and great team work demonstrated by the kitchen staff. Thanks for a great meal and happy new year to you all ❤️
Absolutely fantastic dinner on Friday night, sat at the bar and Tina was a blast! The old fashioned and primrose cocktails were awesome. Started with the Steak Tartare then Tina suggested the Ribeye, which was perfectly cooked, great flavor, I also added a scallop on the side and wow!
We had an excellent anniversary dinner at Primrose. Our children surprised us with a bottle of Veuve. We started with the burrata. The bread it was served on was so tender and delicious. We followed with the gnocchi which had crispy mushrooms and English peas. It was amazing. The service was great. The owner came by and wished us a happy anniversary. We would definitely recommend.
Beautiful space. Well appointed wine, beer, whiskey and dining. This spot is sure to become a local and visitor favorite. The main bar overlooks the Yampa River and Howelsen Hill. Perfect for a date night, Social hour or a nightcap. The food is a wonderful fusion of elevated American, with influences of Asian, French, and other European styles.
Excellent beef, pork and crab. Vegetables were fresh and you could tell. Ate outside and was very nice and quiet.
Wow, just WOW! The staff was very attentive and the owner/chef came over and made sure we were taken care of. Being from New England I got the lobster bisque to give a try and I will say being so far away from the northeast it was one of the best. It wasn't a meal, it was a story, experience and memory I won't ever forget. Make sure to get the Rib Eye for two. The chorizo butter, OMG! Can't wait to go back.
The food is a chief kiss here 🤤 keep in mind that they are busy in the evenings and food could be slow. I would also recommend reserving a table upfront.
Great restaurant in Steamboat with a good happy hour. The service was great and the presentation and overall restaurant experience was just as good. Best meal I've had in Steamboat as a vegetarian as well.
This was such a fantastic dining experience. Thao was our server, and he was so knowledgeable and friendly. If I could, I would give this more stars than 5. It was just out of this world spectacular. The food was absolute spot on. My nana raved about it the whole next day, and I’m still dreaming of the flavors. 🤤 I had the gnocchi which was perfectly cooked, crispy on their sides with crispy mushrooms and peas and parm on top. Nana had the fish special, red snapper over Thai noodles with mango and brussels. Dessert, we had the chocolate silk, which I ate too much of, and nana had her favorite, strawberry shortcake. Beauuutifully plated. Every aspect was spectacular 🤌🤌
Amazing happy hour, delicious food, and great service! Highly recommend checking out this spot during happy hour for the brussel sprouts, cocktails, and the burger!
Exceeded my expectations! Squeezed me in despite being busy. Unbelievable personal service, original menu options for Steamboat and it was all exceptional.
We went here for our anniversary, and it was the perfect place to celebrate. Food and drinks were fabulous, and service was top notch! Special thanks to our server Larry, he was awesome!
Had an awesome experience enjoying complex drinks and prime seafood deep in the mountains. Nick was our server and its people like him that make going out for nice dinners so worth it.
Absolutely phenomenal meal! Gaye our server was just an absolute joy throughout the entire meal. Top-notch service provided by her. The Denver steak, buttermilk mashed potatoes, the broccoli rabe, and the Hazel Dell trumpet fries were just off the charts excellent. The hot cookie with one scoop of ice cream was just over the top awesome to cap off the entire meal. Thank you for making a great dining experience. Highly recommend anyone coming into town and wanting a great deal.
Fantastic food and service! This is our go to nice dinner out spot. Everything we have ever tried is amazing! The lamb pasta is out of this world good!
Excellent service, excellent food and drinks. The denver steak was great and our waitress had outstanding service
This is by far the best restaurant in Steamboat, and I’ve tried nearly all of them! Primrose is a well oiled machine of amazing workers that know and understand the true meaning of hospitality. From the freshness of ingredients (many of them being local), to the fresh juices behind the bar, to the amazing service from all around, in particular Melissa always putting the cherry on top of my experience, I can’t rave about this place enough!! Get the burger, it’s the best in town, the oysters shucked right in front of you, flown in fresh, any of the amazing cocktails, but the primrose cocktail being voted best in steamboat is a must try! It’s always an amazing experience here and I can’t wait to be back! Much love.
Amazing experience at Primrose with Sarah as my server! And as always - great teamwork and coordination from the front of the house (Nick, Jake, Cal - thank you!). Food was on point and came out quick. The owner pays close attention to the food quality and Primrose delivered again tonight. Eclectic menu with diverse options for the entire party. The manager (Meg) stopped by several times to ensure my dining experience was everything I could imagine. Book your reservation early so you don’t miss out on the Primrose experience your next visit to Steamboat!!
We had a great dinner. The service was good, we sat at the kitchen seating and watched them make food all night. The Elk wapiti was one of the best meals I’ve ever had. The flavors on that plate were unique and flavorful and I’ll probably only ever order it when I come back. The prawns appetizer was great, good sized for 2 to split. The peach crisp dessert was just amazing- served in a very, very hot dish though. My husbands steak was ok, pretty much a basic steakhouse steak. He didn’t like the sauce and then the ice cream sandwich cookie was also just ok. But there was a lot of really good look food coming out of the kitchen. Highly recommend.
My fiancée and I came here for our anniversary and had an amazing experience. The wait staff was super attentive, precise, and kind (shout out to Jake who took amazing care of us and an incredible hostess who made space for us). The food was exquisite, especially the five spice cake. They were very accommodating for my garlic allergy which can be hard to come by too. Thank you for an amazing evening :)
Primrose is a must. Kyle, the head of the bar has created an elite system of drinks and staff. Tina and Ronan were so friendly and welcoming. Food is great, but again, Kyle’s cocktails are the best in town and to be rivaled against any other cocktail bar.
Been to every restaurant in town, this is the best restaurant in steamboat hands down give it a try. The rolling cart steak is amazing. 10/10 will be coming back again next year.
Primrose isn’t cheap but you get true value for your dollar in a place like steamboat with spectacular service, excellent food, sizable portions and thoughtfully crafted cocktails. I will add that the staff is always throwing good vibes and seems to enjoy working there which speaks for itself.
Primrose in Steamboat Springs offers a delightful atmosphere with an innovative menu featuring local ingredients and dry-aged steaks. We were impressed by the ambiance and the creativity of the dishes. However, our experience was dampened by a disappointing oversight: my filet arrived over-rested and cold. Given the price per entree, this was a letdown. Additionally, while the sides are advertised as shareable, they were a bit small for larger groups. Despite these issues, I'm willing to give Primrose another chance in the hope of a warmer steak next time. Overall, it's an awesome restaurant worth revisiting.
Primrose had a happy hour that goes till 6pm and the oysters and "cannibal sandwiches" (aka beef tartare) were both delicious and great value. My husband got the duck 2-ways which was a generous portion sized and pretty well cooked (breast was more medium rare than medium so a little chewier than perfect). We also got the Brussels sprouts and I got the Fowl and Jowl, which is why I took away a star. Brussels were crispy but oily. Fowl and Jowl was a whole quail and pork cheeks and while the quail was smoky and well cooked, deboning the bird was a bit tedious. Pork cheeks were fine, but just not something I'd order again.
Food and cocktails were great, and our server Gaye was excellent! Highly recommend the steak tartare and the house-made bread/butter. The only drawback was (like other reviews have stated,) we had to wait a bit for our table when we showed up on time for our reservation. More than anything we were upset that no one acknowledged us while we waited at the host stand, even to just say “Hey folks, we’ll be with you shortly!” despite at least two staff members coming up to grab menus. Overall, we were happy with our experience- but our first 20 mins in the restaurant was kind of uncomfortable.
Drinks were a highlight of the meal. The main entrees were very flavorful and came out in a timely manner. Dessert, the pumpkin cheesecake, was dry and frankly overcooked. The owner came by to ask how it was and became very defensive at the criticism. He responded by saying the pastry chef would come over to take a look at it and she never did. It was so bad I only took one bite. The bar staff was wonderful, the owner's reaction left much to be desired.
I was nervous about eating at Primrose after seeing some poor reviews recently. However we had a good experience. We went on NYE and dining out on a holiday is always chaotic but we were seated as soon as we arrived and our waiter was pleasant. The only reason I am not giving 5 stars is the wagyu was undercooked, other then that everyone food was excellent and they have a stocked wine list
We got all the seafood appetizers at happy hour. Fine selection of drinks and bites. Not too busy, our server Ryan was nice, there are some huge TV screens at the bar. Small portions for appetizers but loves the open air kitchen.
As a restaurant industry veteran with over 20 years of experience as both a server and general manager, I have a deep appreciation for well-executed service, and I want to start by saying the food was exceptional — beautifully prepared in every way. The restaurant itself is stunning, and the overall atmosphere was outstanding. Additionally, the managers and all supporting staff who interacted with our table were genuinely phenomenal — attentive, helpful, and welcoming. However, our assigned server significantly diminished the experience. He was inattentive and disengaged, visiting our table only once to take our order, which he got partially incorrect, and then didn’t return until it was time to present the check. When we asked to split the bill, he was unable to do so and placed the blame on us for the confusion, which felt unprofessional. Additionally, a gratuity was added to the bill without any prior mention — not by the server or on the happy hour menu we ordered from — and as a result, an additional tip was unknowingly given on top of the included one. While we accept some responsibility for not catching it in the moment, it was still a disappointing and avoidable situation, especially since transparency around gratuity is standard practice. Overall, while the experience was anchored by excellent food and a strong team, the service from our assigned server was not reflective of the otherwise high standard set by the rest of your staff.
Overrated, underperformed. Nice atmosphere. Our server was unfortunately sub par and that may have contributed to the food experience. The bread and butter was awesome, the salads were really good. My daughter an amazing mocktail and the Duck 2 Ways. She said the duck was very rich. I had a NY Strip. Maybe $58 is normal for these parts though it was twice what it was worth. I ordered it medium rare and it presented as rare. We had waited so long that I ate it anyway. It had been sitting as it wasn't hot.
The food has always been amazing, but the service this time was most definitely rushed. Forty minutes in we were being asked multiple times if we would like a box, it felt like being very rushed out of the door.
Short wait for a table with reservation. Service friendly but somewhat slow. Cocktails were tasty but bourbon flight listed as $40 was charged as $59, nearly 50% overcharge. This was subsequently corrected when the error was noticed and brought to attention of server. Crabmeat dip appetizer delicious but with inadequate amount of toasted bread. When requested, a $3 up charge was made. We learned of this only when we got the bill. Salad was delicious and served already with single order split for two people as requested. Steak ordered rare to medium rare but served on medium side of medium rare. Server suggested enjoying steak with extra demiglaze but failed to mention the $5 up charge. Olive oil cake was a disappointment. We won’t go back.
Nice atmosphere, service was very slow. We sat for 20 minutes before we got our drink order, after the drinks, we waited another 12-15min to give our orders. Apps took another 20min, and our orders on our steaks weren't put in until AFTER we finished our Apps. Our server was nice, but the overall service was slow...it was a Wednesday evening and it was not busy at all. On top of that, they tack on a "LWD" (Labor Wage Disperity) fee to our bill, which we were told "EVERYBODY in Steamboat charges it". We spent the entire week in Steamboat, this was the only restaurant that charged us this fee. Primrose, pay your kitchen staff appropriately instead of charging your customers this fee. Everyone else, I'd recommend going to 8th Street Steakhouse instead. The steaks and food is better and service is faster.
We made a reservation 2 months ago for 7:30 and didnt get seated until 9:00. The entrees didnt come out until 10. This wasn't their fault - the group ahead of us was refusing to pay the bill - but it left a sour taste in our mouth. The food was fine but it wasn't worth the cost. I paid $65 for a steak that I would have happily paid $30 for. Half of our group had a great wait staff, the other half had a different experience. Half of our group had good cuts of steak, the other had bad cuts of steak. Overall, not a horrible restaurant but not worth the money. I would come back if it were around 1/2 the price.
Our crew pulled up with a 7:30 reservation. We were seated at 9:00. I can't blame the establishment for this (in totality) because it was due to a party failing to possess the ability to pay for their meal. What I cannot excuse, however, was my steak. I had ordered the Ribeye rare. While my steak was perfectly cooked, the cut of meat I got should never have gotten past the Chef. The cut of meat I got was all gristle and fat. Completely inexcusable for a 63$ steak. Additionally, waitstaff spilled water on our crew on more than one occasion. Finally (and this is without going into further detail about the numerous hospitality blunders) the wait times on each and every item was in excess of 30 to 45 minuets. I'm talking about half an hour wait to receive a simple old fashioned. For these reasons I will not be returning, cannot recommend, and would generally avoid. Prices are obscene for the quality of product as well as service.
Went to Primose with a party of 12 and ordered their tableside bone-in ribeye, which seems to be one of their specialty steaks. We ordered four steaks total, all medium rare. Unfortunately, the execution was really inconsistent. The crust on all of them came out extremely charred with a burnt flavor, and they were heavily salted to the point where it overpowered the steak itself. On top of that, all four steaks were cooked differently—two were basically rare inside, one was overcooked, and only one was actually cooked medium rare. For a signature item (and at that price point), we were expecting much better consistency. If you’re looking for a true fine dining experience in Steamboat, I’d recommend looking elsewhere
Had a very unlucky experience. Someone was trying to pay with a gift card before us and it took an hour for us to get seated. Just get them out of the table after 30 min of them trying to pay so that other people can sit atleast. No seating in the waiting area so it was a tough wait.
Pittsburg steak, burnt and blue with no refund offered after they made our party wait an hour. Pic attached was the rubber duck breast they served, no shown is the confit duck that reminded me strongly of the duck jerky treats I buy my dog. Will not ever come back, and am still angry.
When a restaurant charges $100/head, we expect a special dining experience. I am truly surprised by the favorable reviews! Food was mediocre at best. Our steaks at home on the grill are better and we all agreed that we had just eaten better fries at the ski lodge on the mountain.
We’re full-time Steamboat locals who have supported Primrose for years — sometimes dining here multiple times a week. This is an honest review from regular, local customers who make a point to support Steamboat’s small businesses. Primrose is the definition of pretentious without substance. We’ve been here many times, and every single visit ends the same way: rushed, dismissed, and treated like we’re a burden instead of paying customers. This last time was the nail in the coffin. The second we finished our main course, the staff started slapping down the bill without asking if we wanted anything else — a not-so-subtle "get out." Each time we ordered another round of drinks, the bill magically reappeared. To be clear, we only ordered two rounds of drinks after our main course — one was essentially our dessert course — hardly excessive. Finally, they flat-out told us we had to leave because they “needed our table” for an 8-top — even though the restaurant was half empty and no one was waiting. As proof of how absurd their excuse was, OpenTable happily let us book an 8-person table the minute we walked out. Translation: they just wanted us gone. And then there’s Collin, the owner. Let’s be honest — unless he sizes you up as socially or financially “worthy” and you’re willing to play the brown-nosing game, you don’t exist to him. He struts around like he’s running a Michelin star spot, when in reality he’s alienating the very locals who keep his place alive in the off-season. Arrogant, dismissive, and completely out of touch. When we finally told the waitress that Primrose disappoints us every single time, her smug response was, “Well I think that’s an exaggeration.” No — it’s the truth. The service here is cold, the atmosphere is uncomfortable, and the entire place runs on ego, not hospitality. Bottom line? Primrose doesn’t just fail at hospitality — it mocks the very idea of it. We’re done wasting our time and money here. Steamboat has too many restaurants that actually appreciate their customers. Primrose deserves to be empty.
