This place is a treat for your senses. Every time I go, I wanna try something different. Rich smells, tastes, and textures. Consistent. Warm and friendly staff. If you love Indian food, it's a place you should experience for yourself.

Excellent Indian Cuisine! We had the butter chicken, chili chicken, garlic naan, paneer tikka masala , gobi Manchurian. It was so good! Medium heat was perfect. Not too spicy. Quaint atmosphere. Ask for Bala, he will make you laugh 😂

My husband and I recently had the pleasure of dining at this amazing Indian restaurant, and I can't say enough about how fantastic the experience was. Navi, our server, was exceptional in every way. He provided attentive and friendly service, making us feel truly welcomed. The Indian cuisine served here was outstanding in both quality and quantity. Butter Paneer was not on the menu, but it's what I wanted. Never hurts to ask, they actually made it for me. Each dish was bursting with flavor and prepared with the utmost care. The portion sizes were generous, leaving us completely satisfied. They do not skimp on the paneer like other places. The overall dining experience at this restaurant was nothing short of amazing. If you're looking for delicious Indian food and impeccable service, I highly recommend this place. The sweet lassi and mango lassi were both amazingly delicious. Navi's outstanding service and the exceptional quality of the food made our visit truly memorable, and we can't wait to come back for more. TL;DR: Eat here!! You likely won’t find better Indian food within a 500 mile radius. Stopped for dinner on a Saturday night on the drive from Tahoe to San Francisco. The fact that it was perfectly located off I80, was by the end, the least relevant factor. We ordered the gobi Manchurian, chicken tikka masala, malai kofta (definitely my favorite!!), and an okra dish recommended by our server with a garlic naan. Every dish was packed with flavor, well balanced, rich, and a great combination of textures—easily 10x better than your average Indian fare. The restaurant seemed to be family-run, and we got all the best aspects of such establishments—everyone was kind, attentive, knew the menu well, and was just clearly happy to share it and ensure we were enjoying ourselves. Leftovers were just as good the next day. Would highly recommend as a pit stop, but we might be driving back from SF for it!

Essence had good atmosphere, very chill. Staff was very attentive. Good portions & shareable sizes. I like that they’re open until 9:30pm perfect for dinner. Their specialty tikka chicken kabob was amazing & the sauce that it came with as refreshing. The butter chicken was warming & comforting on a cold night. I would 100% come back again.

Authentic Indian cuisine w/excellent flavors, better than the other restaurants nearby. The restaurant has only been open for 7 months. Prices are reasonable, the only complaint is the portion is quite small for the price, but the flavor makes up for it. Will definitely go back!

Food was phenomenal! Originally from California living in Denver so we’ve been missing delicious food like this. Definitely come here if you are looking for some yummy food. We got the Chicken Mushroom Masala, Navratan Korma, Gobi Manchurian, and garlic Naan. 10/10 would recommend and will be back when we are in town.

We had such a great experience at this Indian restaurant! The service was excellent — friendly, attentive, and warm without being overbearing. We started with the Aloo Tikki Chaat and it was absolutely incredible — perfectly spiced, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The rest of the food was just as delicious, with every dish tasting fresh and thoughtfully prepared. The atmosphere was laid-back and easygoing, making it a perfect spot to relax and enjoy a meal. Highly recommend if you’re looking for authentic flavors and a welcoming vibe!

Amazing Food! Best Indian food I've ever had! My family and I keep coming back. It is consistently delicious. Leftovers are even perfect so we order extra everytime. Also, the staff are incredibly friendly and professional. It can get a bit loud in there but its a cozy atmosphere.

Place is legit. I was super skeptical. It’s really good. Only Indian food in town I can eat other than Homemade deliciousness from Mama Singh! You probably don’t know her or her sons and so you won’t get that. Lol. Here’s the only knock on this place. When you call it in they will tell you 30-40 min. It will likely be 1hr. Some folks might find this really annoying. It never bothered me much. The food is really good. Have tried several items here and everything was good. Reasonably priced and the naan is great.

The food is absolutely the best! When eating out this is our only go to place. My husband and I don’t even ask each other anymore, “where do you want to go”. And when we’re out of town and eat at some others Indian restaurant we compare/rate them over Essence. So far no other restaurant has been better or even close to as good. And our server is so friendly and funny too, his name Bala. He is also the best! But just know the food takes longer to cook here…but absolutely 💯% worth the wait.

Best food I've had in the Sacramento area. Had the coconut curry lamb. Curry was super tasty and well spiced. Meat was juicy and had it's own flavor separate from the curry. Onion naan was perfect and I couldn't believe how much bread one order was. Could not ask for more!

It felt very homie inside everything for the appetizers to the nun bed and everyone’s on tree especially liked mine the Essence signature chicken lots of strong bold flavors. Elton helped us out very friendly. I would recommend one of the top Indian places I’ve been and my dad said it was his second time at an Indian restaurant and he loved it.

Ask for their recommendations, if unsure, and you won't be disappointed. The prices were so reasonable as well that we were pleasantly surprised. We've recommended this place to our friends - yes, its that good! The place is small, and is popular, so be prepared to wait for your turn, and then some more as they prepare the food. My pictures might not represent how it normally is served because I ordered it vegan (no yogurt and mint sauce) and I knew I wouldn't be able to finish it after the dosa, so the Samosas are on the side. The Dosa was also ordered vegan, but I'm not sure what it may have excluded. Service & atmosphere were just ok. But I'm going back for the food!

Stopped here for dinner based on the great Google review while we were heading to San Jose from Tahoe. Ordered Vegetarian family platter, Chicken Tikka, Tandoori Roti and Garlic Naan. Everything tasted so delicious. My kid enjoyed the appetizer and wanted to leave a 5 star review 😃😃. But I feel the chicken tikka pieces (especially the big ones)were hard and not very tender. But the gravy comes with plain rice. Quantity was great. Requested for to-go boxes to pack the balance food! Overall great service and food.

This was some of the best Indian I've had in a long time. My husband and I stopped for lunch on the way back from San Francisco, and it was completely unassuming from the outside. But the menu was extensive, with a wide range of clearly labeled vegetarian dishes. We got our dishes quickly, and it was all extremely delicious. The samosa and malai kofta were particularly flavorful. For what we got, we thought the price was extremely reasonable. If we lived locally, we would definitely be regulars!

We were eight of us and went there for lunch on our way to Tahoe . Food was fresh and excellent! We ordered the essence signature chicken, lamb seekh kabab , paneer saag and yellow dal. The breads were excellent … onion kulcha was a standout. Overall a great experience and we will be back there soon. Bala, the server, took great care of us.

The food at this new restaurant is absolutely amazing!!! Some of the best Indian food I have ever had! I have been there twice, my only real complaint is that the place is too hot inside. I was there 7/22 and it was so hot inside that I was sweating bullets! They had fans on, but it was not nearly enough. They need to fix the ac, which is why I rated the atmosphere down a star! If you are always cold, go hit the sauna here, lol. However, vibrant flavors of the spices they use warm the palet and make you long for just another bite! The portions are hearty and filling! The menu is robust with something for everyone! The samosas and cheese bites are amazing and accompanied with some fantastic sauces. The medium heat of the dishes ( we ordered medium) actually had a pleasant heat to it. No matter what, try the food, even if for takeout!

We brought family to try their dosa, but were informed that dosas were not served on weekends and our wait for the food would be 30-40 minutes. We were extremely disappointed to hear this. There is no place on their website or on their menu that says that dosa and chole bhature are not available on the weekends. We ended up waiting over an hour for our food as well. I hope that they can make this clear on their menu so others will not be disappointed as well.

I think the gentleman at the front was quite unhelpful. Despite our request for a window table, he flatly declined, even though he could have handled it in a more courteous and friendly manner. We were caught off guard by this and it significantly tainted our experience, which is regrettable. And top it all we found hair on one of our dishes.

We arrived Friday at 7 pm and were seated outside. No one came for 15 minutes until I went in to ask. The server finally took our order, saying it would take 35–40 minutes. After 30 minutes we only received our appetizer, and 8:10pm when I went inside to enquire about the rest if the order I was told that it’s not been 1 hour since I placed the order and it would at the minimum take another 30 minutes. Meanwhile, takeout orders kept going out and other tables that arrived before us had already finished their meals. When I asked about the delay, the server was rude, avoided eye contact, and simply said it wasn’t in his hands. With no apology and no guarantee of when food would come, we canceled and left. The restaurant seems understaffed with only two servers juggling dine-in and takeout, leaving guests waiting unattended. Very disappointing experience and really bad at customer service. I wish I could give 0 stars but giving 1 for the 2 appetizer that we received which were good.
