Went on Saturday night before Mothers Day, and it did not disappoint! We were a bit late for our reservation but got seated right away. Renee was our server and she was attentive, apologized for the wait since she said it was a bit busier than normal, and made sure we were taken care of. I ordered the seafood pasta (forget the Italian name) and my wife ordered the cioppino, and we both liked our dish. Topped it off with the recommended house made tiramusu which did not appoint. Will be coming back to try something else next time and I recommend others do the same! Only slight negative is that it is a bit loud in there so not great for intimate conversations.

My wife and I had our first date here 30 years ago Dec 1993. It was great then and still great today. Escargot, veal scallopino, and sole were great. The homemade blueberry cheesecake made a great ending to our meal. Of course, we will be back. Thanks to Angel, our waiter, for excellent service!

Montecatini in Walnut Creek is one of those old-school Italian spots that never disappoints. The ambiance has a “Goodfellas” vibe—classic, cozy, and full of character, with a timeless feel that makes you feel like you’re stepping into a traditional Italian trattoria. The food here is outstanding, with rich flavors and great attention to detail. Their specials are always worth trying, especially the swordfish and duck—both are standouts that showcase the restaurant’s commitment to quality. The portions are generous, and every dish feels like a true labor of love. Whether you’re a regular or a first-timer, Montecatini is a must-visit for anyone who appreciates authentic, delicious Italian food in a warm, inviting atmosphere.

I absolutely love this restaurant. Incredible food, service and ambiance. High quality Italian food in a nice yet laid back and not stuffy environment. The beef carpaccio is amazing, we order this every time. I had the calamari steak as well and it was such a unique and tasty dish. The chicken is moist and salmon is amazing as well. You truly can’t go wrong here - 10/10 recommend! I will be coming back to try the lasagna.

We made reservations and came for Valentine's Day and also our 1 year wedding anniversary and it was an amazing experience. They handed me a rose for Valentine's Day and sprinkled some really cute heart shaped glitter on the table for us (I think for our anniversary, it was a really sweet touch). We got a mocktail and the minestrone soup to start, which were both really Delicious. Then, we got the Ciopinno and Gamberi scampi which both did not disappoint. The staff were friendly and helpful the entire way through as well. We ended with tiramisu which is house made and absolutely incredible, and a latte and tea. The ambience in this restaurant felt very European and I really enjoyed it.

Everything is always amazing. The scalpels are always perfectly cooked and the best I have ever had. The chicken with mushrooms is great and always a favorite. Definitely go and try the food!

Best Italian restaurant in town! They have amazing past options, you will never regret if you would go with the sea food option, Fettuccine Alla Viareggina, it was so yummy! They have great happy hour appetizer options, smaller versions of their signature appetizers.

One of my favorite Italian restaurants! My only complaint is that the restaurant is rather loud, so if you want a quiet place then this isn’t the place to go. However, if you don’t mind a little bustle (and no sound dampening add-ons) the food is definitely worth it.

Best Italian in Walnut Creek, and possibly the entire East Bay. The service is amazing , do not miss the gamberi scampi! Every dessert is mouth watering , lick the dessert plate clean- delicious . But my very favorite is the service . I was recognized only my second time back and the entire staff is quite attentive , friendly , and knowledgeable. Great happy hour deals as well ! My family loves going to this place. Our food tends to change and so does our methods of obtaining it. We still are leery of going to dine-in since Covid but we do come to pick up food all the time. My parents love to the get the tortellini and I tend to get the specials, especially when there is osso bucco! If there is an issue we always get great customer service in response.

I wish that I had taken pictures of the food. I visited once with the owners mother and this time returned with my husband to eat at the bar. The service at the bar was so amazing. Angel made sure that we were very well taken care of. We focused on sharing appetizers and everything was delicious. This is totally a locals spot. Everyone knows everyone. Super welcoming and fun.

I'm Italian. The food was truly authentic. Our party of seven had an excellent waiter... Sam. The wine list was top-end, and every selection surpassed expectations. However, they needed at least two more busboys to service the tables. The one they had was running like crazy and couldn't keep up. That said, it's perhaps the finest Italian restaurant in the Diablo Valley.

S

We loved the dinner, ambiance and staff. The generous portions of each antipasti, salad, and entrée were absolutely delicious. The service was first class. Romantic date night. We definitely intend to go back to try other entrees. This was a winner!

By far the best Italian Restaurant in the area. Favorite dishes include Scallops Limon and Seafood pasta with creamy tomato sauce. Have literally never tried a dish I didn’t enjoy. Service is impeccable and waitstaff know the menu well and are always helpful if you’re having trouble deciding. Fresh grated parm spooned over your piping hot meal old school style is the Icing on this always delicious cake. Lastly, I wanted to comment on reviewers who gave average reviews due to gluten sensitivity or other food sensitivities. Just .wanted to point out that this is a small, independently owned, traditional Italian restaurant. The kitchen staff is incredibly hard working. offerings are geared towards those without dietary restrictions. This is generally the case for any restaurant restaurant serving classic Italian cuisine.. Hats off to whomever offered to prepare gluten free pasta-this ianother great example of the exceedingly accommodating staff and superior service that they provide. Keep up the great work!

Such a lovely restaurant! Great quality food, great service, and such a romantic ambience. They also have a happy hour here, which is awesome! Also, the menu has a good selection of wine and yummy options with different meats, or a great selection for a vegetarian diet. We will definitely be coming back!

Came here for a date night with my husband and although we had a reservation there was a little wait. The owners were very attentive and accommodating and served us complimentary wine while we waited for our table. The food was absolutely amazing and everything you could tell was SO FRESH. From the scallops in my pasta to the freshly grated Parmesan cheese. I highly recommend this place!

My spouse and I took a chance and walked in about 5:30 PM on a Wednesday, without a reservation. We did get a table, luckily, because I'd say within a half hour or so every table in the place had customers. The food was great - I had the Scallops al limone and my spouse had the Vitello scallopine con funghi. Service was excellent and the ambiance was subdued, relaxing and attractive. Very definitely top notch in all respects!

When I arrived, the restaurant was packed. I was thinking to go somewhere else but the hostess had me at the bar directly adjacent to the kitchen in short order. I love sitting near restaurant kitchens to watch how they work. There were a list of specials, but the bartender suggested I have the scallops and this dish was delicious. Even though they were busy, the service was top notch. I will definitely go back for another meal.

All I can say is WOOOOW!! I can here with co workers (5) and we all ordered and shared. I had veal Parmigiano...delicious!Another co worker had scallops, ravioli, spicy spaghetti, chicken piccata, and I one more dish that slips my mind, but it was delicious! Lol This is some of the best Italian food I have tasted in a while! And everyone that worked there was amazing! I could not have asked for a better experience! I will be back!

Such a fun night celebrating their 30th anniversary! Very amazing for a restaurant...but these owners treat everyone as family. They are truly happy to see you and feed you top quality food. So, to begin with. When you see the place from a street, it is not the first choice to swing by, yet when you peek through the window, you'll see an open kitchen with food being cooked nonstop, a hood sign. Inside the place seems a bit crowded, yet you could probably squeeze 8n at the bar if you ask nicely even if you don't have reservation :) And now the food, fantastic italian cusine - the pasta is appropriately aldente, tomato sauce is fantastic, the beef carpaccio blows you away. And in the end you feel guilty if you miss the dessert. I would definitely recommend making a reservation and arrive hungry. Parking in a garage nearby is plenty.

New owner(but he worked there for 15 years), New menu, New drinks. And on and on and on. Fresh, Delicious and Filling. Enjoy a date night or special occasion with friends and family. Ask about the specials if they haven't already told you. Its a little loud when full but its an old mason stone building and that loves to reflect like a natural microphone. Try something new and relax your in good hands.

The food here is delicious. The servers are attentive. The bar is great. Reservations are recommended because it's very popular. The only problem with this place is it's very noisy. Such a great place in Walnut Creek. The dinner was fabulous. I recommend the carpaccio, it is excellent. The escargot are great too. We dipped bread into the leftover butter sauce from the escargot. I made reservations on the wrong evening without noticing the date and the host/ possible owner was so kind and helped us get a seat at the bar. The bartenders were great and service was top notch. Since moving here a few months ago from Louisiana, by far our favorite meal, service, and atmosphere.

One of the very best Italian restaurants in the entire Bay area. Staff has the least turnover of any restaurant that I know of. While that may not seem significant, trust me, it is. Means the staff loves where they work. And happy staff equals happy customers.

This place can't be beat. We have been coming here since we moved to WC, but realized we hadn't come in since before the pandemic. We immediately made a reservation last night and are so glad we did. The food, ambiance, staff, everything is amazing. Be sure to order to the pancetta wrapped prawns! We love that we aren't rushed here - we reserved a table but sat at the bar. The bartender was ON IT and super quick at making drinks. My husband and I promised each other that this will be our new date spot and we will be coming much more frequently. We can't stop talking about what a wonderful night we had. Thank you, Montecatini!

My wife and I had our anniversary here and they made it a very enjoyable experience. It's still nice to see a place with a real candle on the table and a clean tablecloth. The prosciutto wrapped shrimp appetizer was very well cooked and the sauce on it was delicious, I would recommend getting it. I had the scallops and my wife had the salmon and they both melted as you ate them and the pasta rigatoni you get is very good. We split an order of tortellini that almost stole the show...our server was very cheery and attentive. We will for sure be going back to try more dishes

Absolutely loved this place as soon as we walked in after having our reservation cancelled elsewhere. They were one of a select few that did not lose power on the block and they were extremely welcoming. The host set a tale quickly even though we didn't have a reservation and the service staff was awesome. Food was fantastic! We had beef carpaccio, advice-- get the dressing, onions, and capers, etc... Good selection of wine. Only reason for atmosphere having 3 stars was as we were finishing, another couple was seated next to us who had a puppy, and this did not appear to be a service dog. He was quite excitable, although not disruptive, but seemed inappropriate for an eating establishment. I can only assume they knew the owner. Otherwise, we will return again and loved the vibe.

My son and I ate here for the first time today. The reviews were quite varied about what to expect for decor. We kept seeing cozy, upscale and casual... Wondered how it could be all those things at once - but it kinda is. We saw people dressed up, we saw one dude in a tee shirt and a hat. It was larger than we expected. The decor is dated and a bit shabby and whoever cleans must be five and a half feet tall because I'm 6'5" there's a LOT of dust at that elevation (especially in the restroom). The food was quite good. I ordered the veal parmigiana which they serve with a luscious tomato cream sauce. I could have used the breading a little crunchier. My son had the carbonara and he was thrilled with it. The wine selection was comprehensive and the waiter (Terrance) knew the menu well. Based on questions my son had he listened and made perfect suggestions. I would happily return here and the place has a great vibe. My only substantial gripe is that it needs a thorough cleaning - like all-hands-on-deck-close-the-place-for-a-day cleaning.

Fabulous experience! My boyfriend and I celebrated Valentine's early and chose Montecatini never having been there before. Service was impeccable from beginning with hostess to server to bartender for our dessert cocktail. The food was amazing! My boyfriend had the house special, Fettuccine Alla Viareggina and it was delicious. I chose a daily special with fettuccine, Italian sausage, chicken, and rosemary in a brown sauce which was really good too. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants delicious Italian cuisine which is fresh, simple, and tasty.

A New Years Eve night, this place was popping. Not fine dining, but well enough to sate your appetite. We ordered wine with dinner and the waitress totally forgot to bring it, and nearing dessert, she remembered - by then, it was too late. Ordered food was delivered quickly, not a long wait since the place was crowded. Ambience was loud, expected for the celebratory evening. All in all, I'd come back to give it another try.

Four stars for the absolutely best service I've had in a restaurant. Rachel, our server, was an absolute delight. The food was good, but nothing spectacular. The prawns were perfectly cooked and delicious, but ridiculously expensive. The sauces were amazing, as they should be in an Italian restaurant, but barely evident on our pasta. Would go to Montecatini again to be served by Rachel and try their other menu options.

Great server and the food was amazing. They had great wine selections. The server was very attentive as well...I only give it a 4 star because of the bread. One thing I love about Italian restaurants is the fact they serve you bread...theirs we're not fresh and it was cold as though they just removed it from the fridge. Other then that, was pretty amazing...if you do not care for the bread served at italian restaurants you will really give this place a 5!

Great food, but very loud atmosphere! My husband and I had a hard time hearing each other across the table. We will be back, but will just be more prepared next time!

We had a variety of meals as there were 4 of us dining. My calamari salad was fantastic as was the Caesar salad. I ordered the tortellini and that where it took a turn, although the waitress was super accommodating and changed the cream sauce to a pomodoro sauce the tortellini was a disappointment. The pasta was supposed to be filled with veal but most of the tortellini had little or no filling, so basically I was served just pasta. I should have commented on my dissatisfaction, however, I did not want to ruin dinner as it was a special occasion. My hubby enjoyed his steak and shared his meal with me. I previously visited this restaurant and really enjoyed my meal, I cannot say that we will return as this experience left me desiring more.

It only has 1 medium room. It can get loud at times. Entrees were a bit pricey but the happy hour apps were great. Gnocchi was a bit under seasoned but otherwise everything tastes amazing. Perfect balance of oils and acids, sauce to meat to veg ratio. Scallops were cooked to perfection.

We went on a particularly busy night and a particularly busy time which explains the wait time on the food. The service was warm and friendly, with a nice birthday surprise. The carpaccio and tiramisu were especially delicious.

This place had amazing food and a great staff. Well worth the money for a great dining experience. The food was excellent and had good portions. I was satisfied after the meal. The only draw back for my night is that is was LOUD! The tables are close together and I had to use a moderate shouting voice at my wife to be heard. Not a great place for a date but a good place for a group.

Service was stellar. My son and wife had the chicken picata and raved. My sea bass special was from frozen so a bit disappointing. Some what rubbery and not too much flavor. The caper sauce was the BEST I've ever eaten. I need that recipe. Im sure we'll go back.

Overrated. We went expecting big things given the 4.6 rating. Maybe we caught a bad night, but 1. Took forever to have a waiter come take even our drink order on a Tuesday night. 2. Food was ok. Not bad by any means, but nothing fantastic. You can grab a pasta in North Beach in SF for 70% of the price that is 100% better. Not a bad place, but come expecting average.

I chose this place for dining prior to an event at Lesher. I chose it based on the previous 4+ star reviews it had gotten. The food was meh... it was "ok" (my husband was a chef, and we've eaten at some really fine 4-5 star restaurants). Our bill for 2 was $256 after tip. (Part of the reason the bill was so high is that we ordered a $52 bottle of Montepulciano, but the server brought us an $84 bottle of Montalcino... maybe my fault for not looking at the label better before she started to pour). For $256, we can dine at Zuni Cafe in the city with wine. This is not a bad place to eat, but WAY overpriced for the quality of the food. I love supporting local chains, but I would probably go to Il Fornaio if you are looking for Italian near the Lesher. This place isn't all that.

First bad experience tonight. Ordered two Gnocchi w/olive oil pesto sauce for takeout. The gnocchi was grossly overcooked, like eating mashed potatoes. This, after touting Montecatini to my visiting daughter as the best Italian food in Walnut Creek. Very disappointed

I was looking forward to this traditional old school Italian restaurant to meet friends for dinner. Having no details on what to expect, I was surprised with how dark and loud the space is. While we waited for our friends to arrive, I asked our waiter for gluten free options and his response of "nothing" was frustrating. Having celiac, I generally have no issue finding gluten free dishes wherever I go whether that be on the menu or by suggestions of the staff. I was told I could bring in my own GF pasta for them to cook, which was of no help already being there. When asking if any entrees could be gluten free, the waiter was hesitant but said he would ask the kitchen. Turned out just one dish would work - chicken piccata. I chose to order a salad, but our group enjoyed their dishes of pasta. As soon as we finished our meal, the dessert menu was provided. When we opted not to order dessert, the bill arrived, yet we were not finished enjoying our time. We weren't offered another drink or even water, just the bill. The lack of gluten free knowledge/offerings and poor service will not have us going back. Its unfortunate because we love old school Italian and would otherwise like this restaurant.

Let’s talk about this one. I got a Groupon so on a $200 meal got $80 off. Was that a good deal? Service - waited for a bit before someone came to take our order. But once they did we were attended pretty well. Drinks - awesome. There were unique flavors and they don’t hold back on their pours Food - average. Had a carbonara - should have been lighter than what it was. Lasagne - was ok. Carpaccio - enjoyed that. Seafood salad - the clams were over cooked. Dessert - tiramisu was good but chocolate cake was average. Overall was it worth it? I don’t think so. For three of us after discounts we spent 163 for three persons. Would have spent the same in Danville downtown and would have had a fresher menu without discounts.

This is a nice place and I think maybe another day, the food would be great. Had the chicken piccatta. I am not a fan of chicken but I was told its one of the top dishes ordered. Pasta was overcooked and looked like cheddar mac n cheese and the sauce was so salty and oily. It was really busy amd like everwhere they are short staffed. I would go again. The dining room manager/host is a wonderful person. He greets you like he knows you. That alone was worth the visit.

This is an old-school Italian restaurant with a pretty wide selection of appetizers, pasta plates and main dishes. The atmosphere is a little bit dark and looks older - but the food is pretty good, and good for a date or an evening out. They give you complimentary bread with butter which is just ok, but if you're hungry, it will tide you over. We ordered a Caesar salad ($13) which was fine - nothing outstanding - basic romaine lettuce, cheese and dressing but I've had better. Not sure I would order the same salad again. My husband and I ordered two dishes to share, the lasagna ($26) was excellent with a cheese & beef filling with bechamel sauce and a creamy tomato sauce. The lasagna was definitely the hit of the evening, and one of the better lasagnas I've had out. I don't normally like lasagna that has too much tomato in it as I find it acidic, and this was not anything nor the sort. I would definitely recommend. The lasagna does take about 30 min to be made / baked, so plan accordingly if you're pressed for time. We also shared the tortellini ($26) which was a beef tortellini with prosciutto, peas, and a cream sauce. It was just ok - I didn't find the tortellini had too much beef filling and the sauce was just average. Overall, a decent restaurant if you want more classic, old-school Italian food. The portions are decently sized and the prices are reasonable. I'd come back here for the lasagna!

We came here to celebrate my daughter’s birthday. We liked the service and the old school Italian ambiance. However the food was hit or miss. The escargot was so salty that it was inedible even with bread (they did comp that). My clam soup was also extremely salty - I ate the clams but could not have more than 2-3 spoons of the soup. My husband ordered the lasagna which was surrounded by tons of cheesy sauce and was soggy. The fettuccini dish with seafood , Cesar salad and carpaccio were good. They brought us a tiramisu with birthday candle at the end that was delicious!

Great service. Didn’t think it was good quality italian food. The pasta was soggy and obviously reheated, not fresh. The sauce was watery and had no flavor. The fish also didn’t have flavor. The caprese was served with italian dressing. More expensive but lower quality version of olive garden

I would give it 4 stars...out of 10. I’m so surprised by all the high ratings. We just came back from dinner there and our first time at the restaurant. We won’t be going back. It was so incredibly loud it was difficult to hear each other talk and both my husband and I got headaches. The service was incredibly slow and the food was just not that flavorful. Too bad because we had such high hopes.

My fist time to Monticatini’s restaurant was not a pleasant one. I walked in around 6:15 pm to place an order to go with the host. He told me it would be ready for pickup at 7:30 pm. Now does it take an hour and 15 min to prepar a meal to go. I would hope not. He then seated a couple that came in after me and told me he would be back to take my order. With kind of customer service I am surprised they are still in business. I won’t be going back to this restaurant again.

We came to dinner with friends who highly recommended it from past years. The food was good, not great but good, although a bit overpriced. The service was very nice, but it took slightly more than an hour to receive our meals. The food service was very slow, but the drink service was very quick and efficient; hmmmm, I wonder about that. However, shortly after we were seated, a party of 8 was seated near us and from the moment they arrived it was impossible for the 4 of us to have any conversation over a small table. Even worse, we were subjected to their shouting and shrieking during the extremely long wait for our food. We certainly didn't want to wait for desert and subject ourselves to the ordeal any longer. Granted most of the fault was with the rude partiers at that table, but some of the fault lies with the establishment. It is a very small and crowded space. Perhaps they could install some noise absorbing tiles on the ceiling or some cloth on the walls for the same purpose. At the very least, the staff might have asked the obnoxious jerks to try to yell and scream a bit more quietly. The noise made it a miserable experience and we won't be back.

We had heard about this place on social media and soon as we walked in and the host smile went down and stares from him and then other customers began. As an Italian food lover, I was truly sad to not be able to embark on this experience. Mind you we're black.our server was nice but old host guy needs to retire but my business will never come back to the establishment.

The food was wonderful , but the table we got was in the area where no air was moving , we were sitting in our own sweat had to bag our food , an go home too bloody hot to eat it the overhead fan was not working an the place was full . We went out for my B-day have not been out for awhile to eat , an this happened , not good

We had high hopes for Montecatini, but unfortunately, our experience was beyond disappointing. We came to celebrate a birthday, expecting a special and enjoyable evening, but it turned out to be the worst dining experience we’ve ever had. The ambiance was terrible – the atmosphere felt chaotic rather than welcoming. We were seated next to the loudest table in the restaurant, which made it impossible to have a normal conversation. Despite the noise being disruptive to everyone nearby, the management made no effort to address the situation. We had explicitly informed the host and the server that it was a birthday celebration and requested a dessert with a candle, but they completely disregarded this simple request. It felt like they couldn’t care less about making our occasion memorable. To top it all off, we paid full price, including gratuity, for this miserable experience. No apologies, no accommodations – just indifference from start to finish. I won’t be coming back, and I’d advise anyone looking for a pleasant dining experience to avoid this place. Montecatini, you seriously need to work on your service and attention to customer needs.

So we have a reservation for my girlfriend's birthday and when we got there we had to wait 15 minutes before we got sat. The host said that he had a lot of walk-ins but we had a reservation so we should not have had to wait. The tables we're open in the restaurant so I don't understand why we had to wait for a spot. Then it took an over an hour to get drinks for wine and a cocktail. Then we ordered our food and we waited for 45 minutes and it didn't come and then when I asked about it they said my lasagna was going to take longer. We wind up being there over 2 hours before we finally ate and got out of there with a reservation on my friend's birthday. I'm always a generous Tipper but I did not tip in this circumstance which is highly unusual for me

Not sure what's happened here. Stephen who used to work here is dearly missed. He made it so so welcoming. We felt rushed probably will not return. Waited long time for food and drinks.
