Out for a birthday lunch, we were greeted by Tom. We were seated in the lovely conservatory. Drinks and food ordered while we sat taking in the beautiful country views. Our food was promptly served, it tasted as good as it looked. Tom was very attentive and saw to all of our needs, nothing was too much trouble. Tom is a credit to this beautiful hidden gem of a pub. Fully recommend and will visit again.
Visited with two friends. Bar service friendly and helpful Table service excellent. Predominantly served by a young man who had just the right amount of banter and sales patter, informed us of specials, shared his personal opinion on what he had eaten himself, etc etc. Excellent. Food was simply superb. The lamb was cooked to pink perfection, the veg were well presented and extremely tasty. Desserts we're to die for. An fabulous meal. Already recommended to others to try if they are in the area.
I've visited here several times over the years but our latest visit (since the arrival of new management!) was special. My husband and I took our little dog out for a walk on Boxing Day and wanted to follow it up with a few quiet drinks at the pub. Alex and Shannon were only too happy to welcome us and the atmosphere was lovely, with locals and off-duty members of staff all chatting and supping together. The pub was decorated so festively and it looked great. They allow dogs and our young pup was fussed and treated like a queen. (The pub dog Tweed is a very good boy.) We passed several very happy hours relaxing in the bar and are eager to return to try out the food menu! Come here if you like good old-fashioned pubs with a crackling fire, friendly staff and what looks like a delicious new menu. You'll get a warm welcome!
Excellent food and drink in a great location, sensible (I.e. not ridiculously massive) portion sizes a rare find! Good parking too.
Called in on spec having been for a visit to Kirkham Priory, found us a table for 4 very quickly and took our drinks order. Staff were very friendly, efficient and attentive. We had the 2 course Sunday roast and the roast beef was amazing, good size portion lots of veg and most importantly plenty of very tasty gravy. All round great experience and good value for money, highly recommend a visit.
We stopped off on our way back from Wharram Percy after having it recommended as it was dog friendly. It was lunchtime, very friendly welcoming staff. Told the whole pub was dog friendly! We opted for the bar as it was cosy with a good atmosphere. Both had a ploughman's lunch. Delicious!! Other food coming out looked amazing. Would recommend and would visit again.
Loves this inn! We were 4 friends having Sunday lunch/roast-beef, turkey and pork. All were delicious! Certainly by far the tastiest turkey I have ever had. The portions were generous without being overly large, staff were friendly and the whole place just has a lovely, welcoming feel. Will definitely visit again!
Beautiful place right next to the abbey. Doesn't matter when you go, summer winter whatever, it's lovely. Worth the journey for the 'trough chips ' alone. Although they were especially enjoyed whilst sat next to a roaring open fire on a very wet snowy cold evening. Will absolutely be back.
Our wedding was the most perfect day thank you to The Stone Trough Inn. Philippa ensured everything ran incredibly smoothly and our vision was perfectly executed. The food was incredible. The staff were amazing. And of course, the views and setting is just stunning. The ideal venue!!!
Went on a Friday lunchtime which was a little quiet. The service was excellent from pleasant well presented staff who were very attentive. The food was excellent also. Fish and chips were ridiculously fresh the batter perfect. The ploughman’s platter was delicious with roast beef that melted in your mouth and an amazing pork pie. And such good value.
We found this gem after a bit of research for a Sunday lunch on our route home after a lovely weekend - we’re all so glad we found it! Absolutely brilliant. Amazing service, all staff were so friendly and welcoming, food was served very quickly. The food was absolutely delicious! Mushroom wellington was perfect. We’ll definitely be back after future meet ups!
Fantastic location, the pub itself is classy and nicely decorated but keeps it's original charm. The staff were really welcoming and friendly. The food was fantastic, we had a Sunday roast but would definitely go back to try the other items on the menu on a different day in the future. Keep up the good work 👏👏
We stumbled upon this amazing, dog friendly pub whilst out exploring the area. It was rather quiet on a Saturday afternoon in the main bar but the conservatory overlooking the hills was busy. I can thoroughly recommend the Beef pie (and it was a proper pie too) and the Apple & Plumb Crumble. The team were fantastic. We will be back soon.
Absolutely gorgeous destination pub, friendly and attentive staff, beautiful food and reasonably priced. We came back the next day and have saved to return in the future the quality did not disappoint the second visit and we look forward to trying more of the menu in the future
The staff are super friendly & ensure everything is perfect. Thank you Hannah & team. The food is amazing, generous portions & served hot. We have been 3 times over the last few months because it is such a great place to eat. You will not be disappointed.
A beautiful pub overlooking an Abbey. The young man who welcomed my family and I was very polite and inviting. The beer well kept and delicious along with the fresh and crisp flavoursome chips we shared. Free pool, which where I'm from is simply unheard of. Other than it maybe being a touch tricky to access if disabled, simply cannot fault this pub.
Beautiful views, staff very attentive, food was ok and very dog friendly - enjoyable afternoon
Beautiful location whether you want to walk or drive drive to the pub. Kirkham Abbey is a lovely riverside setting and the pub is nearby. Beef pot pie was a joy. Service and prices were excellent. Lovely traditional build with conservatory with stunning views well worth stopping at. Love to see it in the winter.
Delish food. Never tasted beef as nice. EExcellent service with friendly staff. Nice cosy warm feel. Just what you want when visiting a nice country pub!!
I visited the Stone Trough Inn this afternoon with my Fiancé after a weekend in Westow. The service was amazing I couldn’t fault them, quite a young team that work there but very attentive and friendly. I ordered the fish and chips which I would highly recommend, especially sat by the fire! Definitely worth visiting if you are nearby.
Lovely meal. Great location and friendly staff. Good outdoor seating area
Visited the Stone Trough Inn for the first time today was blown away with the stunning views. We sat in the outdoor area which today was uncovered but understand is covered when inclement weather is about which is a great idea! The food was spot on I had a chicken caesar salad with a side of onion rings which was delicious others in the party were also very complimentary about their dishes. I also had a lemon and blueberry posset tart with clotted cream which I can thoroughly recommend, the service was very good and the whole experience was very enjoyable, already looking forward to our next visit!
Matt Alex and Lucy were wonderful. Good food beer and great service Will see you again definitely thanks team x Murphy says hi too W
I attended my Step-Daughter's wedding breakfast and evening party here yesterday and I was incredibly impressed. Both the sit down meal and barbecue were delicious, the venue was perfect for such an occasion (including a generous event space), and the service and atmosphere were exceptional. The staff went above and beyond to cater for guests' dietary requirements and were welcoming, friendly and professional. I hope to visit again soon and would strongly recommend as a venue.
Lovely little country pub with excellent service. Beautiful atmosphere and super tasty food. A real find
Welcoming, accessible, and accommodating. Lovely green setting in the countryside. Perfect to go for a meal and drinks, or as a stop on a walk or cycle ride. 4 of us enjoyed a generous portion of roast dinner and a tasty dessert each: good food, that didn't cost the earth. A dog and a wheelchair were both warmly welcomed, when booking, as well as on arrival. One of my friends suffers from occasional seizures (epilepsy adjacent). When this happened (between main course and dessert), the staff could not have been more supportive. Without making any fuss, they quietly checked in with us to ask how they could help, offering a few proactive ideas (a glass of cold water, and opening a window). They also offered to postpone delivery of our desserts until after the seizure had passed - even though this meant remaking the vegan dessert. Vegan and gluten free options available, albeit with limited options during busy Sunday lunch service (very understandable).
Amazing place to stop off and have a drink and bite to eat lovely stuff and even better food 10/10
Staying in the area for holiday with my wife and friends, we found this place by accident, what a find, the place was so friendly and the food was brilliant, it was the best meal I have had out for years, also the dog was so welcome, if you are in the area call or book on line because you really need to try it.
Lovely traditional country pub with fantastic food. Visited today for an early lunch and was delighted to see a nice cozy fire burning. The staff were super friendly and the food was delicious. Super friendly with our energetic young puppy and happy to have our dog. Love the look of the new menu and felt extremely welcome. Great to see an iconic York pub going strong
What can I say , The lovely ladies Hannah and Phillipa at the stone trough , work tirelessly with huge smiles and welcoming faces throughout our cousins wedding. They are professional but at the same time warm and homely people. Couldn't be more happy with our experience . Not to forget the Chiefs food was to die for it really was delicious (buffet) not a thing we didn't like was 10 out of 10. Will be returning for food definitely 😋
Good portions of food.... in some cases. Very limited options on the Sunday lunch menu, ordered the beef lunch and it came with a fair portion of meat and yorkshire pudding, but very little on behalf of the other components of the meal. The only vegetable i was provided with was less than half a carrot and 2 pieces of roast potato. Thankfully we ordered a starter of cauliflower cheese (which was delicious). For pudding we got the sticky toffee pudding, which was a good portion and one of the best desserts I have ever ordered in a restaurant, highly recommend it. Staff were a bit disorganised but friendly, atmosphere was lovely, very nice decoration.
Really nice homely feel pub in a beautiful setting.Staff were very friendly and attentive. We had food from the carvery which was to a good standard and value.
Good food fantastic location . Friendly staff. The problem is the seats we sit on in the pub are ripped . They ran out of food on a few items on the menu aswell .
I enjoyed a lovely lunch here. I had the plaice which was delicately cooked. Booking a table is easy using the website and worth doing as it did seem to be filling up quite a bit with visitors including those enjoying the outdoors in the area (walkers and cyclists). There is a very large car park. I was seated in the conservatory which looks to be a relatively recent addition and, due to planning, can only be accessed internally. It was heated which was of benefit today and it had decent views across the Derwent Valley.
Lovely pub, good food, wonderful views of the valley, plenty of seating outside. Would enjoy larger portions, can't say the terrine was my fav, but loved the burger and goat cheese starter.
Very pleasant evening with very good food and service. Definitely recommend.
Fantastic food, but the service wasn’t great. We had a lunch and a pint here on a bike ride. Once we ordered, the food came promptly and was delicious. However, on arrival, we stood around at the bar for a good 10 minutes being ignored by various members of staff. It was very unusual!
Arranged to meet some relatives who were visiting Yorkshire from Devon. Found this pub as located midway from Leeds and where they were staying. Lovely looking pub and with a great enclosed terraced area (which I think opens up fully in the summer by the looks of it). Lovely location just up from Kirkham Abbey. Very welcoming manager and all of the pub is dog friendly which is great as we had 3 with us. We'd pre-booked as bank holiday Monday and were accommodated very well in the terraced area. However, i have not given 5 stars as, being a bank holiday Monday, maybe they hadn't envisaged it would be quite so busy and they seemed a little understaffed. This meant a very long wait to get offered a drink and another long wait to have our food order taken. Thankfully we weren't in a rush particularly and the staff/manager were all very polite. I was a little disappointed in the menu having assumed it would be similar to the sample menu online. It was just a little lacking in 'pub' food which, as in a walking area I found surprising. Maybe a few smaller plates/simple dishes (sandwiches etc) could have been included. All in all it's a very nice pub in a lovely location and I will try it again I think.
Not really recommended, if i'm honest. Slightly bad experience. Went on a sunday. The menu was extremely limited to a sunday lunch, or a veggie wellington - that's it. Their advertised online menu that can be viewed via google isn't their actual menu and the reasonable prices shown on it do not apply. It's actually expensive... it cost us £44 for just a sunday lunch and a veggie wellington - nothing else. Didn't get drinks, pudding or anything else. There was a mysterious "service charge" for £4 on top of food which i've never seen before. The place was very quiet, yet we were waiting over half an hour for our food. When I finally i received it, there didn't seem to be much on the plate for a £22 full sunday lunch (pictured), but i'll let you decide from the picture. The only redeeming factor was the lovely view. I echo the same concerns other people seem to be raising in the reviews.
Beautiful setting and lots of potential to be a great pub I share the sentiments of previous reviewers, this pub needs more pub food. It is trying too hard and the meals are a tad too different and also pricey. The decor is also a little tired. It would benefit from having some of the seats re-upholstered with country fabric and some lovely sumptious country cushions.
Pub great., food good.. great wedding venue... Drinks.. absolute Rip off ... One pint of lager one small coke £11 .. one small wine £10 !!!
The location is beautiful, but the service was unacceptable. I was left waiting for an order that never came, even though the staff clearly saw me. It was frustrating to see other groups getting served while I was treated like I was invisible. It felt like a selective service that only caters to regulars or certain people. Extremely unwelcoming for international visitors. Save your time and go somewhere else where everyone is treated with basic respect.
