It’s a pity we came on a rainy day else the outdoor would have been perfect for alfresco dining, and for the dogs to run around. Restaurant is dog friendly and the food is marvelous. We had the proud and local whiskey selection which comprise of 3 sample whiskey found in Speyside. The rest of the whiskey selection is also impressive and very affordable. You can choose to take away in drams if you are driving. The grilled chicken was flavorful and the hand cut fries was the biggest I have ever seen. The seafood gnocchi was a special for the day and it was perfect. Not too chewy and soft and melts in your mouth. Portion is decent and price is affordable 75 pounds For three mains and three whiskey tasting. Highly recommended for families.
We called in here at the last minute after Storm Floris blacked out our nearby accommodation and restaurant. Staff could not have been more helpful, quickly securing us a spot and delivering a top class Venison Bourgignon Pie. There's a decent range of beers on tap and of course a massive range of whiskies. And the setting is lovely, right near the river in a lovely room, a big step of from your classic pub.
This is the best B&B we stayed in Scotland! Very very charming, well decorated, well preserved, located close to the Spey river and wonderful walk around. Staff is kind and very polite. Restaurant and whiskey bar were the highlight with cozy environment, amazing selection of whiskeys and great food for dinner. Menu was rich of interesting choices and we couldn’t be more pleased with the fantastic dinner we had. A place to come back and recommend to friends and family.
We popped in because the bus had dropped us off early for a local distillery tour. We were impressed from the off with the quality of the beer & whisky and friendliness of the staff. We were impressed enough to book a table for two days later. Having left the premises to walk to the distillery one of the party seriously injured themselves on the local slide (avoid at all costs!). A local stranger kindly gave the injured party a lift back to the Mash Tun where the staff were unbelievably kind and helpful, especially Tricia. We were struggling to find a taxi when Paul the manger kindly gave us a lift back to our accommodation. It turned out a leg had been broken and when we returned two days later Paul & Tricia were equally kind and accommodating. As we expected, the food, drink and service were exceptional. A big thank you to all the staff. We’ll come back next time we’re up this way.
We had a table booked for 9 for a birthday celebration. We were greeted with a warm welcome and the service was excellent throughout our meal. We all choose a variety of food and drinks and none of us were disappointed. Chloe made us some delicious cocktails and mocktails too. We had a look round the cigar room and were impressed with the variety on offer and the knowledgeable information. The Mush Tun isn’t local to us but we will definitely be returning.
We called in, without a table reservation and we were pleases to get a table immediately. The food was so delicious. The room we were in was lovely, interesting. The toilets were very clean, modern and top standard
Restaurant review only; we did not stay at the hotel. The food was fantastic and they have a great whiskey selection! We enjoyed the food, atmosphere and whole experience so much that we're going back tomorrow 👌
Passed by during our walk and had a drink with the family. Great hosts, great whisky selection (tried 2) and great dessert. Will pass by again when we r in the area.
Went for lunch here the food is top notch! Not your normal pub grub. The venison pie is amazing and a very generous portion of meat and the fish and chips were fabulous and not greasy at all. Would definitely go back if we were in the area.
Husband and I had dinner at The Mash Tun and really enjoyed it. Husband had the lentil and vegetable soup and the scallops with chorizo, both of which he raved about. I had the trout which was perfectly cooked and absolutely delicious. The restaurant itself is lovely and the staff were friendly and attentive. Thanks for a great dinner. Highly recommend.
Great whisky bar and restaurant. We'd stayed here before prior to the change of ownership, but since the excellent renovation the bar and especially the food has gone up a notch. My wife had the venison from the specials board and described it as perfect. Fabulous food, a huge selection of whiskies, excellent staff ( a special mention for Amanda) all in great surroundings. Highly recommended, we'll be back again and again.
Popped in for lunch on a recent trip. It's a beautifully appointed bar in a lovely setting by the river. The food was excellent, service was friendly. They had space for a few walk-ups on the day we visited, but I'd recommend booking in advance as it's not the biggest (esp if you're a larger group).
We didn't stay here but stopped by for lunch. The food was delicious and they had a great whisky selection, plus a cigar room. Best burger I've ever had! Will definitely be back next time we're in the area
Can't fault the service or food here. We were on holiday and suffered from a power cut for 2 days. As a business owner, I needed wifi and signal. The minute we mentioned we had no power, the staff told us to charge anything we needed to. Food was awesome too!
Amazing food and excellent staff. We had a a brilliant Sunday roast and then popped in for a full Scottish brekkie a couple of days later. Faultless, well cooked and very generous portions. Excellent value all round. Special mention to Trisha - thanks so much!
Our one and only day off so we popped in for lunch without a reservation with our wee dog. Hubby had the beef stir fry and I had the burger, both dishes were delicious and reasonably priced. Service was prompt and very friendly even our dog was made to feel welcome. Lovely cosy dining area, very smartly presented. Would highly recommend. Thank you, we will be back.
Came here on a recommendation from an older employee, Bea, who worked at our hotel. Ended up getting the haggis ragu which was delicious. Hubby got the steak🥩, which he enjoyed. We originally ordered the toffee pudding to share but it was too delicious, we had to get another. caesar salad and french onion soup were good too.
We stopped here for a quick bite. Okay- let me tell you how Amazing everything was- from personalized service to the lip smacking food. We were a group of 4 and we tried more than half the menu. Cannot tell you how great the chef was - the kitchen wasn’t open and he came in early because we were starving. The steak was cooked to perfection! The peppercorn sauce was to die for! I will definitely recommend this place
Didn’t stay but had dinner here. Lovely food and cozy vibe. After our meal we sat outside and enjoyed the last of the days sun with a cold drink
Great location on the Spey River. Really amazing whisky collection and surprisingly tasty food. Great service and friendly staff. The soup of the day was really hearty vegetable with tons of flavor the ribeye was prepared perfectly.
Great meal and cigar last weekend! We always like to swing by when are having a whisky weekend as it’s central to many of our favorite distilleries. Thanks to the gentleman who professionally helped us with the cigars I believe it was Simon or Sam (apologies) we will be back soon!
Stayed for 3 nights on our honeymoon! Looked at local options and loved the blend of attractive price and the included breakfast that was ready upon our choosing! Great compact room that had everything we needed. Staff were so kind and helpful! Would absolutely recommend this nice quiet place. Great food and scotch.
Booked a lunch for 6. Great menu, service and tasty food. Staff were attentive, polite and made the lunch enjoyable. Not the first time here and definitely will be back.
We've been in Scotland for a week now and made our way to Mash Tun tonight for dinner and staying overnight. The service for dinner is the best we've had in Scotland! Very nice, friendly, and attentive staff; it made our night. Our room is beautiful, too. Thank you!!
Stopped for lunch. What a great decision. The staff was welcoming and friendly. Quite an extensive Scotch Whiskey selection. Luckily we ordered the lunch special, Salmon with mushroom and rice pilaf. The salmon was the best I have ever tasted. The skin was crispy and the meat was moist and cooked to perfection. I absolutely recommend!
Fantastic whiskey bar, great food and staff. The location is perfect and overall worth a visit every time!
Had the best time here, beautiful place, staff where amazing and the food was really great, the chef Antonel was so lovely to us and our little boy, just loved it
We didn't stay in the hotel, but we had a nice dinner there. The soup, pasta, and hamburger were all great and had some unique flavors that were quite nice for an evening out. The customer service was very good and overall, we enjoyed our evening here. Overall, this is a nice place to come and have dinner. Reservations are highly recommended.
We only stopped for food so can't review the rooms. I had the festive menu and the family had of the standard menu. Cold smoked salmon starter was amazing. My partner had the soup which was great (although the bread was missing which we didn't realise till after). Followed by the vegetarian gnocchi which was a little salty for my liking but still nice, just the soft flavour of the pea and pistachio were lost to the salt which was a shame. Overall though a nice meal and our local from the house. The whisky selection is the best in the area and the flights offered offer a selection of 3 whiskys for a very reasonable price. Recomend if your passing by.
We stayed at the Mash Tun for a birthday celebration weekend. Very close to the Macallan Distillery which was a planned activity while we were in the area. The pub itself is lovely, nicely decorated, many a whisky to tempt you. The food is excellent, very tasty, compliments to the chefs, bar staff are all very friendly, however, what you pay for in the price doesn't reflect the service given - the prices are gastro pub fare, a simple bread basket could have upped this and for the staff to pour your first glass of wine for you when you've paid a fair whack for a bottle. The rooms are tastefully decorated and have all you require however, it lacked the attention to detail in the cleanliness. I don't mark places down lightly, and I wouldn't let this put you off going at all! Hopefully just an off day for them when we were there.
Came for an early dinner without a booking. Not a problem as there were plenty of outdoor tables which is what we were looking for. Unfortunately, once they got busy inside it wasn't easy to get consistent service outside. The food was good but nothing special. Unfortunately, there are not many options in the area so if you want to sit outside on a lovely sunny afternoon and have time to spare, this is your place!
Cool spot for a drink. Wanted to get dinner but requires a booking. Menu was broad Al with a ton of seafood options. Will definitely book the next time we come through.
We had a lovely dinner in charming setting and ambiance. Nice selection of wines and a stunning selection of whiskies.
Great food, good service, specials board, fantastic range of whiskies , pretty area, lovely river side walk just outside, you need to book up as it's very popular.
We didn’t stay at the Mash Tun but popped in for dinner one evening. We booked before going but we were made to feel like an inconvenience from the moment we walked in. Ordered a drink and food. Once the food came we struggled to get anyone’s attention to order another drink. The waitress was rude and short with us. The food was nice just very salty. We had the lamb ragu special and venison pie. Great whisky selection. Shame about the service.
We didn’t stay at the hotel but we ate here at the recommendation of a local resident. We didn’t have a reservation but were there at 5 so they were able to seat us. The service was…odd. It may well have been an off night, no worries. We both had the cod in some sort of a sauce with fennel. It was really not good. Completely bland and swimming in a pool of somewhat puréed veg that tasted like nothing but fennel. It was just really an odd dish. But the sticky toffee pudding was excellent. Overall, definitely not worth the price here. But we found that to be the case with most of the food in the area.
Food was really tasty though the French onion soup was clearly microwaved as the bowl and top were piping and the middle to bottom freezing. The chicken and pasta was super tasty, almost like a schnitzel. I had a cocktail which was lovely but the table service was diabolical. I raised the issue with the cold soup to the waitress but she couldn’t care less. Pretty crap service considering the price
Great little hotel bar. Popped in for a swift pint after work at walkers. £6 for a pint of ale seemed a bit steep but I just had the 1 since I wanted to try it. They also got a cigar shop and smoking lounge outside but don't seem to stock my brands. (Conquistador, rocky Patel, juliany or Luis martinez) but that's OK I like to try new ones so may stock up before I leave town for good in December. Worth a look.
We stayed here for several days. The room is wonderful, bed is cozy, windows open (a plus when it is warm). The younger staff are so great, but unfortunately one person ruined our stay. We dined one night for dinner and cancelled our second reservation and really DREADED coming down to breakfast because the lady, Bea, was so extraordinarily rude to us on several occasions. We are still not sure why, as we expressed how excited we were to stay there. It really ruined that portion of our stay. When I asked to speak to a manager there they were not available. Very sad as the rooms were splendid.
Just tried to pop in for a drink but got turned away, despite 80% of the tables being unoccupied. Now I appreciate they may have bookings, and thats not the reason I am leaving a bad review. I am leaving a bad review because of the attitude of the woman behind the bar. Anyone would think we'd asked to come for a drink round her house! Shocking attitude. Think she might be in the wrong industry as hospitality is clearly lost on her!
As a seasoned traveller who'd explored the world's finest haunts around the World, I am utterly appalled by the abject rudeness at The Mash Tun Hotel Bar. My sons and I arrived a full 15 minutes before their unposted, capricious closing time at 10 PM (in early August, in peak tourist season), only to be dismissed like vermin by a staffer whose contemptuous tone reeked of unearned arrogance. The place was half-packed with patrons leisurely sipping away, clearly set to linger another half hour or more, yet we were denied even a quick dram, despite ample time to serve us. A simple "please finish in 20 minutes" would have sufficed, but no, they opted for public humiliation, turning us away in full view of the crowd after we'd trekked there in good faith. This wasn't service; it was a deliberate insult, unworthy of any establishment claiming hospitality. Shame on you. Never again. EDIT after the owner's response. Your staff told you wanted to hear. At 9:55 we were already enjoying our drinks at another place, of which I have the proof from my bank, following my payment. - and we were on foot, too. So you decide whether what you heard were sweet little lies or not. And one last time: your reply is exactly what I expected. It fits perfectly. Cheers.
Don’t waste your time trying to eat dinner without a reservation. Party of 2 walked in on a Tuesday at 5pm in early-mid June with all but one table open and were turned away. Guess they don’t like money here?
Lovely place. Good location for Speyside Way. Bar staff were nice The Manageress was constantly interfering esoecislly when they tried to interact with customers. Strange set up. Manageress not very welcoming, extremely rude and was throwing people out for laughing. Clearly isnt a people person. Attitude was of one who doesnt like the job and didnt want to be there. A very disappointing visit.
Service desaster. They don’t know how to run the coffee machine, how to change the barrel for the beer, how to hand over dinner order to the kitchen, when breakfast hours are, how to remove sticky stains from the bar.
