On Christmas Eve during the day, Ken and I chose to indulge our senses by tasting a variety of food from different places. We had gingerbread cookies at the Museum of the City of New York, individual portions of Eileen’s cheesecake and now we chose Chinese red and green buns. Chiu Hong bakery has tables and chairs. On Christmas Eve during the day people sat enjoying each other’s company. Vhuntermassage LLC
Chiu Hong Bakery is an old time Cantonese bakery in Chinatown, one of the last of its kind. It's a low-key, no-frills community shop, a Chinatown OG that's been in the area for over four decades. It's filled with the local elderly crowd who like to read the newspaper over a cup of tea or chat with their friends. Here you can buy a bunch of buns and mochi balls for only $1.50 each. The prices at this old school bakery are considerably low. They sell perhaps the best mochi balls in NYC! You can choose between red bean or peanut mochi balls, two for $1.50. They’re soft, gooey, chewy, fresh, and not too sweet. Sounds kind of funny, but it always feels really nice to sink my teeth into them. I really like the texture in the peanut mochi balls because the peanuts inside are crunchy with sugar, the outer layer has shredded coconut, and the mochi part is very soft, chewy, and stretchy - so it's like a whole medley of textures. Cash only! Chiu Hong Bakery (161 Mott St, New York, NY 10013) Open daily 7am-7pm What we ordered: $1.50 (2) mochi balls $1.50 coconut tart $1.50 egg tart $1.50 coconut bun $1.50 milk tea
Quick update: October, 2025. I just came back here and am surprised how good the coffee is. Same as last time, but it's making me so extra happy I have to mention it 💞 Scruffy bakery. Instantly found the cake a friend asked me bring, since everything is clearly labeled in English and Chinese. Wheelchair accessible! Tables with chairs. Cash only. Locals buy here. Amazingly good coffee. Had no expectations for the walnut cookie, was pleasantly surprised. I scraped the crumbs and ate them, so good. Lovely.
Chiu Hong is likely one of the oldest Cantonese bakeries in Chinatown, and the last of its kind. The interior is old-school, with worn-out furnishings and that no-frills, local charm you don’t see much anymore. You know it’s the real deal when most of the customers are Chinese elderly. The moment we walked in, we heard the familiar sound of the classic TVB news intro. It instantly brought back our childhood memories lol iykyk. They offer a variety of traditional Cantonese pastries, like almond cookies (杏仁餅), fortune cakes (發糕), red bean paste pastries (紅豆酥), and more. But they’re best known for their peanut and red bean mochi, which costs just $1.50 for two. *Coconut Tart I had a sudden craving for a coconut tart (椰撻), even though I grew up favoring egg tarts. The tart is crumbly and buttery, while the filling is slightly chewy, similar to the sweet coconut filling of a cocktail bun (雞尾包). It’s always topped with a canned cherry, which gives it that iconic look, even if the taste is artificial lol. If you have never had coconut tarts, I’d recommend the one from Chiu Hong as it tastes very authentic.
We enjoyed the red bean mooncakes, which are made fresh daily, sometimes multiple fresh batches a day. They do sell out especially since it is close to mid-autumn festival. The mochi (filled with either peanut and sesame sugar or red bean paste and covered with coconut) are also 2 for a dollar and also fresh daily, selling out by early afternoon.
Love their Melon moon cake! It helped me temporally cope with homesick.

This place is a Chinatown OG that has been open for 40 plus years. I been coming here since I was a kid and they have been serving the community by keeping their prices very reasonable and their baked goods at a high quality. If you come, try a pineapple bun or an egg tart.
Excellent bakery! Delicious cakes tea and coffee. The price is right. Very friendly staff. When in NYC always stop and get s bite to eat with a hot cup of tea! One of NYC best kept secrets!
The first time I came here, I was with 2 elderly people and one was on a wheel chair. The owners were really nice and accommodated our seating which is what made me keep coming back. Soon this became my new favorite bakery in Chinatown for comfortable seating and excellent prices. 2 Coffees and a Pineappple cake for $2.80. I mean try that at Starbucks. The coffee actually taste like coffee and not watered down. Their steamed and baked buns sitting in the oven is fantastic. This bakery is much more similar to a Ho Won than it would be to a Fay Da or Manna Bakery meaning it's old school and doesn't look like its too busy for you to order and get out of there quick. The owners/servers are usually really nice and don't have a low tolerance/patience problem that pagues many other bakeries in Chinatown, McDonalds or even Starbucks for that matter. It's too bad in all the years I've been in Chinatown, I only discovered it now.
Like others have shared this old school bakery has very low prices and I don’t know how it is sustainable for them. I purchased their pineapple buns, char siu buns and egg tarts - very delicious! They are now my go-to bakery!
One of the last remaining authentic old time Cantonese (Toisan region) bakeries in Chinatown. They sell delicious traditional buns, Chinese baked goods and mochi at rock bottom prices. Chiu Hong attracts a local elderly crowd who sometimes sit with their coffee or tea for hours. Visit here to experience the Chinatown of yesteryear before they too are devoured by gentrification!
Old school Toisanese bakery. Last of its kind as all the others have closed over the years as the owners aged out or rents got too high for them to stay and be able to make a living wage. Please support them. Their prices are very low and I don’t know how it is sustainable for them. Many items are made fresh daily and require skill and lots of labor. Great memories eating their goods and helped me relive great memories with my grandmother. Love this place.
I just got one bag of 牛油曲奇 and it was the best I’ve had in years. It’s a very low-key shop and the service was so so. But the cookies were full of buttery aroma and super crumbly, with just a hint of sweetness. Love it
One of the last old school Toisanese bakeries in Chinatown. They do almost everything perfect (very old school) and keep prices very low. Please visit them! Their peanut mochi a favorite of mine
The best kept secret in Chinatown! The peanut and red bean mochi are always fresh, soft, and delicious. At two for $1.25, the price is also great.
Delicious roast pork buns and almond cookies. I will return very soon for more treats.

The lotus seed pastry was perfection. The thousand egg pastry was really not my thing, however.

1.1.18 - their fried sesame balls with redbean fikking are darn good! There's always a rabblenofbold folk in here, which adds to the charm. Coffee is meh, a little water down, unfortunately.

Went based on the stellar reviews from a few different sites, kinda disappointed. We came for the sesame balls. The woman helping us was warm and friendly, which was refreshing, given this is often not my experience at Chinese bakeries, especially the busy ones. No credit cards, only cash, so I had to grab cash real quick and come back. Once we got our happy hands on those sesame balls, that’s when the disappointment kicked in. They were not fresh, and overcooked as well. They tasted like burnt popcorn - as though the same cooking oil that had overcooked something was reused with these. The taste was so pungent, we could barely taste the filling. Maybe it was an off day for them, but it was the worst batch I’ve ever had.

Everything goes well before they mistook my order the first few days ago, they gave me 10 pieces of peanuts mochi instead of red beans paste mochi by mistake, all of them were wasted since I really not into peanuts.today is the second time they mistook my order for the same item, peanuts again, but only 8 pieces this time,I came back to ask a exchange at 5:30 pm constantly in two days, and they closed, but their business hours show going to close at 7 pm,I just made two trips in vain.
