Opinions de White Maize Albee Square
You know how when you live in a place you find the local spots that completely answer your craving for a certain flavor that you need right now, at a great price, that's always perfectly consistent? White Maize is one of those places. I get the pulled chicken bowl with an extra side of plantains and I'm the happiest of happy puppies. The menu is pretty simple, good food done fast and right. The staff is lovely, friendly and accommodating. It's a bit of a hole in the wall so the atmosphere is definitely "fast food" (though we have eaten in with friends on occasion), so our typical MO is take out. If you like the ingredients, you should enjoy White Maize.
I’m Venezuelan, and I think these arepas are good. I’ve only had the chance to try the chorizo one, the tequeños, and the passion fruit juice. It really feels like home
Love this place. The guasaca (green) sauce is amazing, though I wish it came in a larger container on the side rather than tiny cups (please never change your recipe!!). Shrimp arepas are also delicious.
Amazing food and service at great prices! The atmosphere is casual and simple but nice. The empanadas could be better but everything else is SO GOOD!
I visited this Venezuelan restaurant for the first time today with a friend, and I absolutely loved it! The food was delicious — full of authentic flavors and made with care. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, making it a perfect place to relax and enjoy a great meal. A special shout-out to Alexa for her amazing service — she was super friendly, attentive, and made us feel right at home. It’s not easy to find places where both the food and the service stand out like this. Highly recommend this spot if you’re looking to enjoy real Venezuelan food and a great dining experience!
I just ordered food to go from this restaurant through Uber Eats, and I have to say — wow! It was my first time ordering from here, and this was honestly one of the best lunches I’ve had in a long time using Uber Eats. The portion size was just right, the salmon was perfectly cooked and full of flavor, and the maduros were spot on. Everything in this order was simply excellent. I highly recommend giving this restaurant a try — you won’t be disappointed!
I had the pulled pork arepas and it was so amazing. the portions look small but they’re very filling, almost couldn’t finish it. I told the staff about my gluten allergy (celiac) and they gave me details on what i could and couldn’t have. Very kind staff with awareness. Very nice spacious eating area.
I always wanna try arepas since I never had this dish until I started traveling. Although I can only speak as a foreigner not familiar with this dish, I think it was delicious. A chill, low-key place to enjoy food with friends. Staff was also friendly. I had the Pabellon arepas. Although the pulled beef was slightly dry, everything else was delicious. The corn pancake was slightly crispy outside. ✨✨✨My VIP goes to their Tres Leches cake..!! It was rich, moist, and creamy. But I don’t recommend their flan, have to be honest. It was hard like jello. Not the expected texture.
Truth be told, in 5 years around, better Venezuelan restaurant I’ve tried so far. From good service, clean and comfortable environment to a very good variety of items, whether from the South American country or the rice bowls as well, if you are no adventurous with new foods. I recommend this place.
Super friendly service, really beautiful and comfortable cafe! They open the front wall when the weather is nice. Standouts were the tequeños and the passion fruit juice! They have two types of sauces you can add to your dishes, I loved the spicy one. My friend had a chicken burrito and said the chicken itself was seasoned well, very flavorful. The prices are a little high, but there's plentiful seating and the cafe is very clean! They accept credit cards. White Maize is a nice introduction to Venezuelan cuisine.
Wow. New owner has brought the essence of a warmer vibe. New decorations added to the already nice interiors. Now it feels like an arepa place . It used to feel like a cafe without the decorations. The food, I mean I’ll try to let the pictures do the talking. I’ve eaten in many Vzlan spots and this one is definitely at the top. No hate to all others but White Maize just raised the bar. The new owner has brought better customer service and just a warmer personality. Tequeños are of the best from all other places in NY. Tostones are excellent too. The Culinaries in this spot are not joking. They will soon bring Cachapas and coffee selections. I had stopped coming here due to the cold vibes and this has all been re defined.
White Maize has been on my list for a long time, so once I had a reason to be in Carroll Gardens, I decided to finally check it out! I walked in around 3:30pm on a Thursday, and I was the sole customer. They have a small (~ 6 small parties) seating area and restrooms for those who want to dine in, and whoever was in control of the music was a Swiftie! I will say that both times I have been here the person working the register has not been the most alert, but apologetic once I got their attention. I got the pulled pork bowl ($15.16), which is an elevated Chipotle bowl. I went for the bowl over the arepas because 1 arepa was almost the same price, and I felt like the bowl would be more filling. If you prefer smaller meals, I think you can get the most bang for your buck with the bowl, since you can split it into 2 meals. I was starving, so I consumed it all in one sitting, and it was filling indeed! I felt like the ingredient selection and quality justified the price, and the plantains were definitely a highlight! The pulled pork was juicy and well flavored, rice was on the softer side, and the tomatoes in the salsa (under avocado in picture) were delicious. My only critique of this bowl is that the layout is pretty but not practical for mixing. Overall, I wouldn't go out of my way for White Maize but I will be a regular when I have business in the area!
So torn here. Used to love their food but my experience was so bad I'll never go back. Food 4/5 Honestly the food is pretty good. The empanadas are really great (particularly the beef one) and the pabellon arepa is pretty good. The tostitos are not as good imo, using a plantanos base instead of the traditional tortilla is interesting. Gives it a thicker crunch and more heft, but I think I prefer the traditional style more? Service/experience 1/5 They mixed up my order (online). I have the receipt and everything. I called to ask them about it and the woman realized and admitted her mistake, and said they'd send the rest of the order over in 20 minutes. 40 minutes later, nothing. Called again a few times, and no one picked up. Horrible experience. Used to go out of my way to visit/order from this place. Never again. Horrible experience. I ordered 18 empanadas and had some friends over, talking up the food, and was really disappointed when the only 3 came. Called to try and get it fixed, and they said they'd take care of it (after admitting the mistake) but one hour later, my guests were still hungry and I got us Thai instead. Go to Luck Thai. Pretty good and pretty reliable.
Rice was hard, cold and clearly old. The plantain was dry. The beans were hard but seasoned well. The avocado was spotted so I couldn’t eat it all. I wish it was all fresh. Would’ve been my new spot.
Used to go here more often, but between the staff just screaming at each other for no reason and the inflated cost for smaller portions there are other restaurants in the city I’d rather go to when I want to grab some Venezuelan food. $10 for 3 tostones was really the bum deal that sealed that I don’t need to stop here anymore.
Totally disregards notes. WAY overpriced. I used to order from here all the time but stopped because the accuracy of delivery was so bad. I spent $80 on food and it was missing all the sauces and drinks. When you call the restaurant they don't pick up and hang up after one ring. Not sure what it's like in person but for delivery, it's a hard NO. Not worth the $$ for dry arepas especially when they forget the sauces and sodas. Follow up. The owner Kathyana texted me, thanked me for my feedback and personally apologized and said she'd like to win my trust and business back by delivering my order again at my convenience. She said there was someone new running the orders that night and mistakes were made. However, when I texted her back to set up the delivery, I never heard back. If you read the reviews I am not the only person to have the issue of them not following notes, mistakes on delivery, not being able to contact the restaurant via phone etc. I appreciated the text but why send if you're not going to follow up. Feels very hollow and superficial. They've lost a former loyal customer permanently.
