Glad we visited this iconic local joint! Good comfort food, tasty local beers on tap, friendly service! We had the turkey dinner with stuffing, gravy, and cranberry - I'm feeling thanksgiving! And the homemade shepherd's pie with roasted mashed potatoes on top. They hit the spot!
We have been going to The Modern Snack Bar for almost 50 yrs. Our sons and grandchildren are going too. All we can say is the food and service are great, not fancy just good home cooking.
My boyfriend and I went for an early diner, we felt like we were at Grandma's house🤗, as we indulged in a Chicken pie, Pot Roast, and Chicken Croquettes!!! The staff was very friendly and accommodating, as well as the Owner, who was very charasmatic!!!! Everyone please try it was DELICIOUS!!!, FRESH!!! AND SCRUMPTIOUS!!! 🤗
Great place to eat at after visiting the vineyards and fields near by. They check temperatures for dine in and follow the Covid procedures as well. Well kept clean place definitely a blast from the past food and drinks very good indeed. Tried their watermelon mojito, soft crab shell and Lemon meringue pie. All very good the waitress was very friendly.
Great homemade food! The food is well prepared. Great menu! The staff and service is great. They can't do enough for you. The owner goes around to talk to the customers. Wonderful place! Mangia tutti!
That good old timey feel! A great place for nothing fancy, American food but taste great. We have driven past this place many times over the years and I'm glad we finally stopped and tried it.
For those who tell you not to come, good. Stay away. You see I'm sometimes on a long line to get in. Why because they are that good. If the food is that bad, why a line to get in? The food and staff. That's why. The best place on the North Folk. Their pork dinner is the best. Need to stay open in the winter. Going back this week, for more pork. Oh they have great home made Cole slaw too. Glad to hear you guy's from the big city west of here. Are going to stay away. One less person on that line.
Came here for the duck sourced locally from a nearby farm. The portions were great and I also enjoyed their soft shell crab. The history of the place makes the establishment and attraction on its own. The service was also very good and everyone was friendly. I was could tell many locals and visitors alike enjoy this place a lot!
Love this place!!!! Old fashioned; super clean, and the food and service are not notch . It's like going back in time where people actually cared about what they do, and it shows !! Highly recommend trying this out. You will be hooked on it .
Good country style cooking and reasonably priced .
Being so far from home we are so happy to Feel like family. Doesn't matter what you have. Its delicious. ...On T.hanksgiving. it's all Moder. DINER. .. It makes onr day delish one. No more relatives to each bring a dish. Choose Modern Diner. It's like. Being home for the holidays. 🍁🍰🍂💥🍗🐔🦃
Excellent fare, especially the hot turkey meal. Excellent service, especially server Rosetta and all servers whose names escape. Excellent ownership, who really seem to care about the customers. Will absolutely miss Modern Snack Bar over the winter, but wish entire staff a good rest.
This place has the BEST soft shell crab and lobster bisque. The rolls in the bread basket were super soft and yummy WITH THE BISQUE. They also make mashed turnips as a side dish which was also EXCELLENT. Their homemade pies are awesome.
Good menu, very busy, traditional American fare at reasonable price. Good service, food is fresh and prepared excellently. A limited but good selection of beers on tap and typical selection of bottled beers. Unusual choice of freshly prepared cocktails and spirits, but well prepared. Desserts are fabulous. Always dependable for a satisfying experience.
Delicious, fresh, cafe. Not the plain menu you’d expect from a typical snack bar. The Chicken Croquettes and mashed potatoes were phenomenal. Friendly service and very welcoming to children. Great selection of local wines and beers.
Stopped by on the way back home from orient point ferry for lunch ...what great luck! Food was outstanding. I had the crab cakes, delicious! My mom had the pot roast (I’ll get that next time...melt in your mouth!) turnips (and the other sides) are so good as well. My dad had the scallops that also looked amazing but no time to try as he dug straight in! We were stuffed so didn’t have any pie. Service was so amazing, such kind people and so caring. During this time of COVID they are literally doing everything they can and are doing it well. Temps were taken, masks required, and I could see, and they were busy, that everything was wiped down constantly. I’d drive back anytime for the experience and I’m over an hour and a half away.
Well they certainly have started the year with a bang! I had the Prime Rib with gravy . It was fabulous! We both also had Lemon Meirange pie f or dessert. Everything was delicious and the Prime Rib was perfect! Thanks so much!
An incredible find! This 50s diner (a plaque in the reception area commemorates its German-American roots) had all of my favorite comfort foods: turkey with stuffing, pot roast or pork loin with dumplings, turnips, and homemade pie. Features Long Island specialties like duck and soft shell crab...and Blue Point IPA. It's a very comfortable, no frills environment with friendly people taking care of you. I would highly recommend it after a day at the vineyards on the North Fork.
I have been eating here every time we visit the North Fork in the summer. My usual go to dish is the soft shell crabs and a side of mashed turnips, and I love it. My family has tried many other of their dishes, including burgers, roast turkey, and meat loaf. All their food is great!
Best home cooked food on the East End of Long Island. The Restaurant is clean and efficient. The pricing is reasonable. The staff is very friendly (and enjoy working there, it shows). All the food is fresh and delicious. The turnips, lobster salad, soft shell crabs and burgers are all excellent. The deserts are heavenly. You can not have a bad meal here.
Went in the early evening. The ambiance is old school feel and that’s not why we go! They have good service no nonsense simple comfort menu. The food is simple done right comfort! It hits the spot. Full of locals and tourists looking for seasonal fun.The hot open turkey sandwich so good! The pies light crust and perfect.I go there in the fall they close for winter.Great job love this place.
Stumbled up this place as we went Apple picking at Woodside Farms. Nice old roadside diner of yore. The menu is simple and to the point with a good variety of dishes. I had a burger med rare that was simple in it's build but outstanding in flavor. The meat was cooked perfectly and you can tell the meat was fresh. My fiance had the BBQ ribs appetizer with Cesar salad and both were on point. The rib meat was literally falling off the bone. We were convinced to have some cocktails by John the bartender and they were so good! I had the The Happy Cider and my girl had a twist on an Old Fashioned both very tasty. Both John and our waitress Janet were incredibly nice and very attentive. We'll def be stopping by again!. Oh and the peach pie? Delish. Amazing. Please try it if it's available.
It's always a treat to stop in here on my trips out to Riverhead with Mom. Had a chicken pot pie and was amazing. Completely filled with chicken and vegetables. Mom had crab cakes, and they were better than the crab cakes she got in Virginia Beach last week. Hers came with zucchini and mashed turnips. They are way better than mashed potatoes. Of course, we had to leave with 7 slices of pie. We couldn't even come close to eating it there because we were so full from lunch. We took home Lemon Meringue, 2 Salted Caramel Cheesecake, 2 Peanut butter cup Cheesecake and my favorite 2 Strawberry Rhubarb pie 🥧...mmmm Service is always great there and you feel like you're dining in a relatives house more than a diner. There is nothing "Modern" about this place and feels very homey.
Visiting this place is like taking a refreshing step back in time in regards to both the food AND hospitality. The roasted duck and crab cakes were absolutely delicious as was the homemade pie for dessert. I would highly recommend and will most definitely be returning soon!
I haven't been here in years. The food was great, the staff was very pleasant, and the service was quick. I don't think the decor had changed at all for a very long time, yet that was comforting. The prices certainly changed, but the meal was worth it.
I love the Modern Snack Bar. My Dad lives near there and when I visit we go for lunch many times. Everything I have had there is delicious. The owners Otto & John are very nice . All the people that work there go above and beyond. It’s my favorite place for lunch out there. The soups and the desserts are awesome .
Place was so cozy and old fashioned. Reminded me of those small off the road diners that are friendly and welcoming like this place is. Had a great waitress named Rosetta. She was terrific and went out of her way to serve us. The portion sizes are amazing and the food is delicious. You will not regret it.
We have been coming here for decades! I have never had a bad meal! The food & service is always great! Retro interior, Clean, nothing fancy & basic home cooked meals. My husband loves the meatloaf & I am a fan of the stuffed flounder. Fair prices & great food!
My husband went specifically for the soft shell crab, which he said was "really good". I had the turkey dinner, yum. Also tried the "Happy Apple" cocktail, which I highly recommend. The staff was great, friendly and attentive.
Great staff, great food. The only place you will find Long Island duck in 2025. Highly recommended.
My recent visit to "The Modern Snack Bar" on the North Fork of Long Island was an absolute delight. The restaurant exuded warmth and charm, and Rosetta, our waitress, made sure we felt right at home. We began our culinary journey with a bowl of creamy Hungarian mushroom soup that left our taste buds tingling with its rich and savory flavors. It was the perfect start to our meal. For our main course, we indulged in the prime rib, a dish that truly lived up to its reputation. The meat was tender, perfectly cooked, and seasoned to perfection. Alongside the prime rib, we couldn't resist trying the locally sourced flounder from Braun Seafood, just down the road. The freshness of the fish was undeniable, and it was expertly prepared to highlight its natural goodness. To accompany our meal, we savored two exceptional drinks. The "Happy Apple," a delightful concoction of local apple cider and Canadian whiskey, offered a sweet yet smoky note. And the mojito, made with fresh mint leaves, was wonderfully refreshing. As for dessert, we decided to take some to go, so we can't provide a review just yet. However, given the homemade nature of everything at "The Modern Snack Bar," we're confident they'll be a sweet conclusion to an already fantastic meal. In summary, "The Modern Snack Bar" is a gem on the North Fork, offering a delectable menu that includes prime rib and locally sourced seafood, all within a cozy ambiance and with attentive service. I highly recommend a visit for a memorable dining experience.
Awesome food, amazing service, great atmosphere that really takes you back and kid friendly. We had the crab cakes to start, which were very good not greasy not over breaded. Followed by the duck and St. Louis Ribs served with the turnips which were awesome!
I had a delicious lunch. The food here is always fresh, cooked perfectly and served hot. I wanted dessert but was so full I had the waitress wrap a piece of lemon merange and a piece of cherry crumb to go. She wrapped the pie pieces so well it was as if she just sliced them. When i got home my daughter and I enjoyed them so much I'm sorry I didn't buy more to take home! During this time of social distancing The Modern Snack Bar is doing their part to make their customers feel safe. I'm sorry I live so far away...I would eat there more often!! Thank you Modern Snack Bar.
Fantastic soft shell crab and lobster bisque. The rolls in the bread basket were also a surprise. They look like run-of-the-mill rolls but they were super soft and yummy. Great dipped in the bisque. They also make mashed turnips as a side dish which was also yummy. Everything we had was great. Wish we had had room for desert. Their homemade pies looked awesome
Heard the soft shell crabs were the best and boy they didn't disappoint. Was also told people order their turnip's for Thanksgiving and I found out why. Combine that with friendly service and great deserts and you'll go home very satisfied.
The food is always excellent. If you want a great home cooked meal this is the place for you. I highly recommend the soft shell crabs!
4 of us visited and we had the soft shell crab, the crab cakes, flounder and all of our meals were absolutely delicious. The server was attentive. We talked with the guests sitting next to us and enjoyed their company very much as they knew we were not from there. Highly recommend this restaurant. If we get back to this area we will be going back.
The Modern Snack Bar proved such a delightful find for me and my extended family last week! We were visiting Long Island for a college graduation and spent the morning on the North Fork enjoying the scenery and some of the local vineyards and distilleries. Famished, we searched for a local restaurant -- and I was delighted to find the option for a veteran-owned and family-run establishment. We were a larger party but felt right at home and enjoyed a full range of menu options including the burgers, friend shrimp, crabcakes, pasta, and a special delight being the reuben sandwich (the corned beef melted in my mouth and was simply heavenly!). Bar service was prompt and great pours on the specialty drinks. Even more importantly the food for our party of 7 arrived together and HOT -- that's difficult to do well. We also took an entire cherry crumb pie for dessert carry-out and it kept us very happy the next two days for our evening snacks. If you're visiting, I can highly recommend the Modern Snack Bar for a wonderful experience and fabulous food without breaking your budget. Remember the dessert!
Absolutely Adorable place for comfort food n drinks. Great owners n staff . You can feel the love among all that work together there , and for their patrons .
On pay days my dad would take us to Modern Snack Bar. It had the best lobster salad sandwich in the world!
This eatery was always on point. Haven’t been there consistently in years because I no longer live in eastern Long Island. However, I do have family out that way still and always make it a point to drop in and grab a bite. Always enjoyed their food, especially the soft shell crab dinner. Finish it off with some homemade pie, they have a great selection. Love the nostalgia I get when I visit, I feel like a kid again.
We had the pleasure of dining at the Snack Bar. The crab was excellent, and the pot roast was incredible. Congratulations on 75 years of serving the North Fork. We have enjoyed the Snack Bar for over 50 of those years. Thank you for the consistent quality.
I love restaurants that have been around for a while, I figure they must be doing something right. That is the case with the Modern Snack Bar since 1950. I finally got to eat here. This is one of the best Reubens that I've had, fabulous juicy lean corn beef that was well balanced with sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and Russian dressing. It hit the spot. The menu was a good mix of comfort foods and the atmosphere was the charming, wood paneled dining room and a counter as well. The service was great, making sure everything was spot on and all reasonably priced. Thank you!
Came here for the first time and the food and staff were excellent. I had the lobster bisque was great with just the right amount of sherry. The chicken croquettes were great along with the Long Island duck. Sides were also great. Highly recommended! Was delicious and will return when I am back in town. Thank you for a lovely lunch
I had dinner here at the modern snack bar about 1 week before this years thanksgiving and I was expecting great American style home cooking and that's exactly what I got on that night! I can't recommend this place highly enough to anyone that's from out of town that's looking for great home cooking on the north fork of long island new york. I'm not using any hyperbole here, this place is the real deal! Please don't forget to get yourself a few quarts of turnips to take home, they're the best on the east end of long island! Chefs kiss!
I’ve been coming here since I was a child every holiday season and it never gets old… the food, the people, and the atmosphere. This is a must visit restaurant whether you’re near or far!!! 75 years and going strong.
Absolutely loved this gem of a spot. From the moment you walk in, it’s like taking a step back in time. The food was delicious. We had the lobster bisque, the e soft shell crab sandwich, the turkey dinner and of course dessert. The pies are unbelievable. Better than Briarmere or whatever.
My family and I have been going to the Modern Snack Bar for as long as I can remember. It’s one of those classic North Fork spots that never disappoints. My go-to meal is the roast turkey with mashed potatoes, gravy, red cabbage, and cranberry sauce, though the prime rib special is just as good. Everything tastes like a comforting, home-cooked meal. The food is always fresh and delicious, from their homemade soups to their famous mashed turnips, which I recently tried and loved. And you can’t leave without having one of their pies — the banana cream, chocolate cream, and lemon meringue are all incredible. I love the old-time atmosphere and the friendly, familiar staff, many of whom have been there for years. If you’re anywhere near the North Fork, I highly recommend stopping in. It’s a true Long Island classic.
Had the half duck with sides — perfectly juicy and crispy. Also tried a slice of cake, which was delicious. Otto stopped by our table, and he couldn’t have been kinder — such a sweet man with a twinkle in his eye, a bit like Colonel Sanders. A truly lovely, honey-warm experience. I’ll definitely be back! PS - Sandra our waitress was so friendly, warm and helpful!!!! She’s a keeper!! ❤️
It felt like going to my Grandma Ronnie's for dinner. This is an old- school family run diner. The food tastes homemade because it is. Just on a bigger scale. My Roast Turkey Dinner came with white & dark meat, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and gravy were included. I also got to choose from several sides offered. I picked mashed potatoes. I added a side of mashed turnips. My companion ordered the Ruben Sandwich with Onion Rings and the side of Turnips as well. We enjoyed everything. The food was served diner quick, hot, tasted, and felt homemade. Service was efficient and fast but lacked warmth. The dining rooms truly feel like you're eating in someone's house. Roomy, cozy and a bit nostalgic. Many menu items are available to go in larger portions, so I ordered a quart of my beloved Mashed Turnips. I can't wait for dinner tonight.
I’ve been coming here my entire life. It feels so good even to just walk through the door. There’s just so much nostalgia emanating from the building. The staff is incredibly kind. The food is ultimate comfort. I always get the soft shell crab sandwich or fried chicken. Love them both. The mashed potatoes and mashed turnips are excellent too.
Otto the owner of this fine establishment turned 80 today and we were lucky enough to meet him and experience his restaurant all in one day! Fantastic food, fantastic service and what's even better is that the prices are perfect! We stopped in on our way further out east to grab some lunch and arrived just as they were opening their doors for business today. Temperature was checked and we were then whisked away to our lovely partitioned table. Staff all wore gloves and masks and each table was cleaned thoroughly. Ordered their fried clan strips to start, delicious morsels of clam fried to a golden deliciousness. Their turkey dinner platter comes with a veg choice, potato choice, and both dark and white meat with the best stuffing I've had that is not home made by me. Their stuffed flounder was flaky and buttery and the kids really enjoyed their fried flounder platter from their kids menu too. You must order the lemon meringue pie, like it's a must! Strawberry rhubarb was a close second but the coconut custard pie was just ok. We will most definitely be back very very soon. HAPPY 80TH BIRTHDAY, OTTO!!!
We visited because a friend of ours remembered eating here when her family came to North fork as when she was a child. The food was excellent. Service was wonderful. They humored her nicely when she was saying that she had been there forty years ago. I bet they hear that a lot!Amy has a soft shell crab sandwich, I had the North fork Ruben, Lisa had the turkey sandwich
Great local restaurant that serves traditional American comfort food such as burgers, sandwiches, roast turkey, meat loaf and chicken pot pie. They are also known for their delicious local dishes including lobster salad, Long Island Duck, clam chowder, soft shell crabs, bay scallops and mashed turnips. They have a good selection of beverages including milkshakes, local wine, soda and draft beer. I come here for the lobster salad and homemade pie. You can get a slice of pie for dessert or buy a whole pie to take home. They have a great kid's menu. This is a good place for families. The also offer daily specials. You can also order anything on the menu for take-out. This restaurant can get very busy during peak times. Some consider the service to be slow here (they prepare each meal fresh when ordered) so bring crayons for the kids. Most meals come with a potato and vegetable and everyone gets a bread basket. I wish this restaurant was open year-round, but they do close during the winter.
First timer. Just moved to LI from Oklahoma. Finding lots of places to eat. Heard about The Snack Bar on Chanel 12 News and had to try it. I had the Pot Pie which was very good and my Husband had the stuffed cabbage roll which was disappointingly small! He thought it was very average tasting, his sides were mashed potatoes and mashed turnips, he thought they too were just OK. Also, the wait staff was very quick with us, even though the restaurant was not busy. We will return, there are lots of other things on the menu we would like to try. We hope they will not hold this review against us. BTW, the clam chowder was wonderful. We brought a quart home with us, also bought a whole lemon merengue pie!
Ate there yesterday for lunch and the food was good for lunch. The soups were exceptional and the main course was okay. Very basic but you expect that. My brother ordered the pulled pork sandwich and that had pulled pork spelt out in gravy which was pretty neat. It was an in expensive diner.
The dining rooms are very tight, and the tables are tiny, so if you have loud or large people at your table or the one next to you, you can guarantee that someone will be less than comfortable. That being said, the drinks are good, and the specials were yummy. The desserts were definitely worth saving room for something sweet. One friend in our party was disappointed at the lack of seafood in his seafood bisque, but he said the flavor itself was delicious. Wait time was pretty quick, and the party behind us was friendly. There's a very nice hometown feel to the whole place, and service was quick, friendly, and efficient without feeling rushed. All in all, it's definitely a spot to visit again.
Cool classic old school "diner". Food was well prepared. Staff was super friendly. Loved my soft shell crab and fried clam strips. [Two things most places do poorly]. Will go here every chance I get .
The Modern Snack Bar is an iconic eatery on the North Fork. Quite the retro decor and feel. Definitely the kind of place to stop at after pumpkin or apple picking during the Fall. The soups are always first rate. The 'comfort' foods - turkey, meatloaf, fried chicken and very good. Not a fan of the chicken croquettes. Desserts are delicious. Prices are moderate (not inexpensive). Waitresses are friendly and accommodating. Enjoy!
The Modern Snack Bar is a nostalgic gem with a classic diner feel and some great food. The atmosphere blends old-school charm with a cozy, retro vibe, vinyl booths, friendly service, and that familiar North Fork diner hum. It’s casual, comfortable, and full of character. The menu is a mix of comfort food classics and local favorites. The roast duck and mashed turnips are well-known staples, and the burgers, pies, and seafood are consistently solid. Portions are generous, and everything feels homemade.
We have been meaning to stop here forever. My husband and I and 2.5 yr old had a nice Saturday lunch. It’s real rustic and like stepping back in time. It was clean and the menu classic diner with a few twists. I enjoyed my lobster salad sandwich and my husband had a classic turkey plate. Lots of people were taking pictures with the sign before stepping inside.
I've been coming here for years. I enjoy their fried softshell crab and roasted chicken. But the reason I keep coming back is their multilayered chocolate cake which was not too sweet and the cake was moist and spongy. Unfortunately they seem to have changed the recipe because the last I had was so sickeningly sweet and gritty.
My wife likes the turkey meal. In the past it was a Whole Roasted Turkey, now it's Turkey Breast without the bone. The food I ordered was okay but much better years ago. I think they are losing their touch. Probably are thinking of selling the business or just closing down like a lot of businesses since the Covid-19. This place was our favorite for many of years and we traveled 40 min. to get there. Anyone have any idea???
Came here on great recommendations from Trip Advisor patrons and were quickly seated. We both started off with the Clam Chowder, which I found to be quite average. Rather sysco like, but not bad by any means. For dinner, I had the salmon and she had the soft shell crab. Again, both were average. My salmon came out almost well done, so it was on the dry side. The star of this visit was my salted caramel cheesecake dessert. It was really good and made up for the first two courses. Overall, with many dinner options in the area, I don't know if I will be back. It didn't grab me that much, but its not bad by any stretch.
Love the old style atmosphere. Thought the prices were high for what you get. Small chicken croquettes with mashed potatoes and a vegetable was $20. No salads included with meals. A lunch meal like that should be around $12, no more. One soft shell crab meal is $22, I'm used to 2 crabs for that price, but MOST restaurants are charging double since covid messed up our economy. Waitresses were great. Parking lot stunk, I almost lost my appetite.
Just not the same as it was all those years ago,but what is?The food was bland and overcooked for my taste. The place was known for value, but we didn't see that at all. I'm glad we went back after all the years, but we won't be back. If I were you I would go and see for yourself, you may like it, but it wasn't our cup of tea any longer
Cute old fashioned diner. Great service and old decor. Staff all very friendly. Ordered clam chowder bowl, lobster bisque bowl, and soft shell crab appetizer to share among 2 people. Portions were pretty small but we also were not very hungry. Food was of average quality. Lobster bisque had a slightly alcoholic taste 🤷🏻♀️ which turned me off but my husband ate that. Clam Chowder was good but nothing to write home about. Had higher expectations for the soft shell crab. It could’ve been more breaded and flavored. It was borderline cold also so I was scared it wasn’t fully cooked so husband ate that also lol. Overall probably won’t return.
I went to the Modern Snack Bar with my wife and son. My Mom and her colleague from work stopped there often on their trips to the east end. I remember going there as a kid, and the food was great. I ordered the roast duckling, and it may have been left over from when I was a kid. I don't know if they just don't have the business anymore to turn over dishes, but this was obviously just heated up in the microwave or oven after being roasted and perhaps frozen. It was dry, tough, and chewy, and some portions of the breast meat were dried out to the point of cracking. Breast meat, not skin! Service was really good. they were nice to my son, and catered to his likes. But the good service just can't make up for the food. I was really disappointed. I doubt I'll give them another try.
We had the specials and it was the worst food weve ever had in our lifetime. The scampi was tasted sweet nothing even close yo what scampi would taste like. The stuffed cod was dry and overcooked and zero seasoning. It seemed like the clientele is mostly over 80 years old so im figuring the lack of seasoning is to cater to their dead taste buds. I paid my $100 bill for 2 soups and 2 specials and left. I totally regret not saying anything but as a waitress you should have seen we left without touching our food and offered something else. Went straight to mcdonalds right after.
My friend and I walked in for the very first time and the the owner came to us and said : Who are you looking for? I don’t know how he’s still in business!!!
Very disappointing experience. Party of three of us went for dinner and none of us liked the food. Our guest ordered fried shrimp and could not eat it, the taste was weird. Ordered a different dish to replace it, which was OK. We were charged for both dishes. I ordered the prime rib. It was tough and somewhat tasteless, the worst prime rib I ever had. Left most of it behind. Our third person was not happy with her Corned beef sandwich either, could not finish it. Never again in this place.
Disappointing! Quality of food was terrible. Burnt fried onion rings, flounder filet sandwich…..What a joke the flounder was paper thin never tasted the fish only the breading…surrounded by huge pieces of lettuce and tomato and a giant bun. Crab cakes over fried and burnt. Hamburgers mushy …. This was one of our favorite places…. Prices up quality way down. Waitress staff was wonderful and accommodating as always. Sadly we won’t be back…
Had a dinner there Saturday and it was terrible. I should have said something unfortunately I didn’t I just paid the high bill
I ordered online from this site. Crab sandwich listed $10.45 and flounder sandwich $10,45. Imagine my surprise when the bill was instead $22.95 and $20.95 respectively. Imagine my surprise. The food is not worth this kind of increase. Fool me once…, checked out the enclosed menu they put in with the order. Prices for Modern Snack Bar were always reasonable for the local clientele….. good wholesome food, fair affordable price. Not any more. Foods not stellar and the prices are out of control. Find out the price of everything before you order take out, else you’ll loose all of your appetite…… They lost my business…. That only took 40 years!
The only "Modern" in this establishment is the name. I was really disappointed with my experience here. The service was frustrating,I had to ask for drink refills three separate times before anyone followed through. The restaurant itself feels extremely outdated; it looks like it hasn’t been upgraded since the 1970s. There’s also a strong musty, old-basement smell that makes the whole environment uncomfortable. The food was bland and definitely didn’t match the prices they’re charging. For the quality, atmosphere, and service, it’s simply overpriced. I also noticed that most of the patrons seemed to be in their 70s, which adds to the overall “stuck in time” feeling the place gives off. $61 for one cheese burger, one order of wings and a BLT before tip . Unfortunately, I won’t be visiting again and can’t recommend it based on my experience.
