Opinions de Micklethwait Barbecue Austin
Possibly the best BBQ in Austin. There’s not a single thing on the menu you could go wrong with. The brisket, turkey, and sausage are my favorites. The grits are an unmissable side. A tad pricey but I think it’s worth it. Make sure to get there on the early-lunch side because they run out quickly and the line gets long.
Outstanding BBQ and welcoming staff. From the time you are waiting in line to when your good is served you get their undivided attention. Brisket and pork ribs were incredible and the sausage was well cooked. The sausage isn't my favorite but it is very good. I really like the sauce with the sausage and brisket even though it doesn't need sauce. Cheese grits are amazing so don't miss that.
Don't wait, Micklethwait! Drove from Dallas to Houston last night, then over to Austin for some BBQ. We'll actually we have a volleyball tournament. But driving all over for BBQ is not unheard of. Brisket was smooth, clean and on point. Some awesome thick and juicy spare ribs. Both the Poblano and Tex Czech sausage had great texture and flavor. The pulled lamb was a great break from the norm. Should have bought more of the cheesy jalapeño grits. Had to fight the girls for some. Luckily I am bigger.😃 Even on this rainy day they had a steady stream of people. Tons of outdoor seating and their stickers are pretty cool If you haven't been yet, give them a stop.
Great BBQ, the pork rib is great! The sides are good and the home made pickles are a nice touch. The brisket is good but not my favourite part, but the turkey was good. The service is super friendly and quick if you don’t get a long line. I came after a run and the lady offered me a pack of electrolytes - super nice of her! The platter with 3 meats and 2 sides is very filling and I’d say it definitely feeds two averagely hungry people for a total of only $20. Great! I’d recommend it!
Different type of BBQ experience, but fun non the less. Tip - if the line at Franklins is forever this place is a great alternative. The line is not nearly as long and the quality of food is close. Tried the pulled pork, pork ribs, and brisket which all had a pepper type rub and filled me up. Cole slaw and Jalapeno cheese grits as sides were good too.
Got Sausage and Brisket. Sides were Mac and Potato Salad. This is really good BBQ! I thought the brisket was a tad drier than expected but the meat had a good smoke ring and flavor. The sausage was really good, had a bit of either German or Czech style flavor, very impressed with that. The Mac was incredible, hands down probably the best Mac I’ve had at a BBQ joint here. 9.8/10 Would recommend to beginners and BBQ experts alike. Also came at Wednesday at 2, no line.
Came here based on recommendations by an Austin friend and was not disappointed. The brisket had the right mix of juicy fat, and the pork ribs and barbacoa were well seasoned. The wait was well worth it. Probably won't be the best location if it's raining although there was a large canopy tent. If parking lot is full, there is ample street parking nearby.
We got a precooked turkey for Christmas. Oh my goodness was it delicious. Super flavorful and very easy to prep for the big meal. We will 100% order again from Micklethwait. It took the stress out of the holiday and we served a turkey our family will talk about for years. THANK YOU Micklethwait family!
Great BBQ! Got there exactly at 11 and the wait was just around 30 mins but beer on tap helped with that. Definitely recommend these guys who are putting in the work for great BBQ. The brisket was perfect man! The ribs are really good as well. The cole slaw was sweet and delicious. The free pickles were so good since they had a light dressing and fresh cut flavor. The sausage reminded me a little of a chorizo flavor but it was a good unique sausage. Finally their spicy bbq sauce was so good i had it on the side when desired only since the meats don't really need it.
Top BBQ spot in Austin to check out. Excellent food, comfortable patio as well as indoor space. Friendly service. Easy street parking.
I’m not even sure how to rate one of the best BBQ spots in Austin! I guess I’ll start with the people. Carson was there working the pit and was such a blast to chat with. So cool to get a little peak behind the scenes and learn about what makes Micklethwait’s BBQ unique over others. All BBQ joints have their way of doing things and their beliefs about what makes great BBQ. From the wood used to the placement of the meat in the tanks, it all adds up to an amazing food experience with slight differences from BBQ spot to BBQ spot. This particular time, we tried a little of pretty much everything. My favorite remains their brisket and regular sausage. We also tried literally all of the sides. My favorites were the mac-n-cheese and green beans. The only one I didn’t care for were the grits. I’m just not a grits fan I guess. Lastly on the food, we tried the banana pudding and loved it! I’ve never really had it before but this was a fun treat to end the meal with and 1 container was enough for 7 of us to share. On the line, it’s so hard to say. We were there most recently on a Saturday and I thought for sure it was going to be a long line. We got there an hour before opening for this but we ended up being first in line and others didn’t get in line until 10:30ish. However, I’ve been there on other Saturdays where the line is 25-50 people by 10am. So I guess it really depends on the weekend and if there are big events in town or not. You’ll have to use your best judgement. If you’re like me though, you won’t mind being first in line for the day!
A block from the tourist place, it was great going to where the locals go. My wife and I both got two meat platters. She had the turkey and shredded lamb. Holy smokes, the lamb was unreal. Pure salt and pepper and meat for the win. Turkey was great. I got the specialty sausage for the day, and the brisket. A solid 5 for me. Would definitely come back again.
I first had Micklethwait in 2017 when I was visiting Austin and randomly stopped by. It’s been 6 years and I haven’t stopped thinking about the dang brisket sandwich. It’s heaven on earth. Finally, came back years later and am happy to report it’s just as good as last time.. if not even better. Favorite place in Austin! Don’t even bother with other spots!
We'd heard his bbq is considered to be some of the best in Austin, and it didn't disappoint. We arrived at around 1, and several items were already sold out. It took 15-20 minutes to get to the ordering window. Service was friendly, and food took about 40 minutes to come out, which was expected given the crowd. You can get a drink or snack at Saddle Up next door while you wait. The food was delicious. The only downside of visiting in summer is the heat. This place is outdoor only. They do have some shade covers and misting fans, but it was still steaming hot, as to be expected this time of year.
On par with some of the best in the city without the wait and the best sides. The pickles look homemade too and were super refreshing. I love how they’re open for dinner because I don’t always want to slump into a food coma after lunch eating bbq.
Simply outstanding! Brisket, sausage, pulled lamb, short ribs, and beef barbacoa, each a mouthwatering culinary experience. Pitmaster Carson and crew were a pleasure. Great atmosphere with fellow patrons as first we waited, then we feasted. This will absolutely be my first stop for BBQ next time I'm in Austin. Kudos!
Brisket melts in your mouth!! SOOO GOOD! The wood smoke was very evident and added a distinct (delicious) flavor. When you taste this taste, you know the brisket is legit! I asked and they burn Post Oak in the smoker. Post Oak is now my favorite! Fall-off-the-bone pork ribs were excellent. The rub was very tasty with no sugar evident (sugar has no business on meat, IMO). The “chili beans” were very tasty, and spicy. We didn’t try any other sides. Micklethwait defiantly earns its ranking from Texas Monthly. On a scale 1-10, here are our rankings: I ranked the brisket a 9.5 and ribs 8.5. I’ve been eating Texas BBQ 20+ years and have been to nearly all the top joints in Texas. Trust me, by my standards these are very high scores. My son: brisket 9.6 and ribs 9.1. He has also had his fair share and is definitely a budding expert. This was one of the best BBQ joints we’ve ever been to. And it was our first stop on this year’s BBQ tour of Central Texas. And it was worth every minute of the 4 hour drive from Dallas! Arrived on a Friday around 1pm and the line was fairly short. They were out of chicken, beef ribs and pulled lamb. Ordered from the little trailer and sat beneath a tent. #BBQ #TexasBBQ
Went on on a Tuesday after Memorial Day. They were already sold out of the Beef short ribs, sausage, barbacoa, and the pulled lamb. (The sausage ran out while I was on line). The line wasn't long I waited maybe 10 min to place my order. I had the 3 meat platter with two sides. The brisket, pork ribs and pork shoulder were delicious. The grits were some of the best I've ever had. The chili beans were good too! Very happy I came here. Me and my friends (5 of us total) managed to find seating easily. I'll try to come earlier next time I'm I. Austin.
We had turkey, ribs, pulled pork brisket and cheese sausage, everything was very tasty and juicy, we also had potato salad, squash salad and braised veggies,it was very tasty, the spicy bbq sauce is not to be missed, but the highlight of the meal was the incredible hospitality we got, we went through the food so fast that sadly there’s no pictures, but it was delicious. Highly recommended coming here if you’re in Austin
This was a pleasant surprise! All of the food was good. We arrived at about 11:20am on a Sunday. It's kind of a food truck where you order, they give you a puck and then they buzz it when your food is ready. No long line due to this. We got our food 5 minutes after ordering. We had a couple of their 3meat plates and some tacos. Brisket=😋 Pork ribs=😋 Turkey=juicy and delicious, Lamb=ok, Beans side=excellent, better than Franklins, Mac and cheese side= yummy.....but the best thing we had their was the Beef Cheek Tacos, highley recommended! They are flanked by a place called Saddle Up and seem to share seating and parking. Saddle Up serves every type of drink you may need making it convenient because Micklethwait's only had water.
I can't believe I put off going to this place for so long. This place is great! Their brisket amd barbacoa (on the weekends only) are really good. And their sides are great additions too!
Tried the other barbecue places around Austin, they were OK. Micklethwaite had the most tender and flavorful brisket I’ve ever had. The pork ribs melted in my mouth. That green bean salad was life changing. Thank you. *single tear* 💙
Couldn’t believe our luck. 2nd in line on a Friday. It got better when we had their brisket and ribs. Some of the best I’ve had. And the pulled lamb was something I have never tried but I’m glad I did. It stole the show in my opinion. Among several choices for sides, my wife loved the squash salad the best. My favorite was the dill potato salad. The people were very friendly. Go treat yourself to some great bbq
I’ll take Micklethwait against any barbecue, anywhere, any time. The spread that Carson sliced up for us is as good as it gets. Brisket was perfect, beef rib was 98th percentile, excellent turkey and pork ribs. Traditional sausage and a Thai-style that was lightly sour. But, the star of the show was the lamb. It looks like chopped beef in the picture, but it was *perfectly* smoked, moist, flavourful, amazing. The sides were all top notch, as well. I loved the roasted beets. The slaw was crisper than standard and the caraway seeds were a nice touch. Incredible hospitality set the whole experience apart and I will gladly go out of my way for more Micklethwait ‘cue. Thank y’all!
Great new BBQ location! Easy parking. Great outdoor space. Staff were helpful, friendly and attentive. Food was excellent. The Cole slaw was light and interesting. They have banana pudding and Peach cobbler! Definitely will be back!
Couldn’t expect much more from a BBQ spot. Food amazing and service top notch! I’ll definitely go back to try more dishes and hopefully a dessert. That was the only downside, was only 1 dessert available. You know the others must be good if they’re out though!
Stopped by Micklethwait Barbecue and it absolutely delivered — the jalapeño sausage had a great snap and heat, and their brisket was smoky, tender, and full of flavor. The homemade sides (creamy coleslaw, cheesy grits) rounded it out beautifully. It’s casual and no-frills, but the staff were friendly and their passion for BBQ shows in every bite. The lines move, but it’s totally worth the wait — one of the best backyard barbecue experiences in Austin.
If you’re looking for Micklethwait, you already know that they have high quality food. But I was not prepared for how pretty, calm, and downright delightful it was. I had set my nerves for a rowdy lunch crowded with businessmen and contractors, and bearded servers shouting orders at one another. No need to have prepared myself. The renovated church set a great country mood, as did the smiling women who quietly set about assembling orders. We went to the outside garden to enjoy our lunch and the breeze. We found native flowers and all those businessmen and contractors grinning with plenty of elbow room at the tables. Rowdy can be fun. But great food and delightful calm can restore. This was a restoring place.
The pulled lamb was the star here. Definitely get that. They also had the best cheese grits by far. Everything else was great, but we had better at some other spots…but here’s the thing, if I lived in the area, I would go here 4 times for every time I went to a place like Franklin, where you have to wait in line for hours.
Great BBQ from a food truck. They have mostly outdoor dining and where you get your drinks (separate building) a small area for indoor dining. Got the two meat plates, one with brisket and turkey and the 2nd one with sausage and brisket. You get to select 2 sides and each plate comes with bread, onions, and pickles. Each table has tasty BBQ sauce bottles and napkins. The area outside has heaters for when it cold and fans when it is hot. The background music they played is progressive. Meats and sides were excellent and very much enjoyed eating here.
I’ve been trying to come here for a long time, finally made the voyage and it is well worth it. Really cool atmosphere and vibe with tons of picnic tables under the shade. There is the food trailer as well as the inside bar to get your drinks at. I came around 2pm on a Saturday in March and there was hardly a line, waited maybe 10 minutes. However by the time we were leaving they were starting the pile up. Abbey the cashier was super friendly. I ordered the Ribs, Turkey, Pulled Lamb & Moist Brisket, Cheddar Jalapeño Grits, potato salad, Lemon Poppy Seed Slaw, Mac & Cheese as well as the Frito Pie & a Rambler. All in all was $63 which was a really good price compared to most craft bbq spots I was very happy with the value here. I will say, the cashier did not ring up my potato salad and I did not get that, I also was given sausage instead of ribs on accident, and I did not get my drink, I’m not sure I might of needed to grab it out of a cooler or something, however I was so excited by the feast in front of me I couldn’t have cared less. All the food was good, the turkey was so moist and peppery. The Sausage was classic & delicious. The Smoked Lamb was a new one for me and I truly enjoyed it but that gamey/ lamb flavor is strong so buyer beware. The moist brisket was top notch with beautifully rendered fat, a more complex rub than Salt & Pepper and was melt in your mouth perfect. The BBQ sauce on the table was also top tier and I’m not usually a fan of thinner vinegar type sauces. Probably one of the best I’ve had, it was kind of mustardy. The Lemon Poppy slaw is sweet, fresh & perfect for cutting the fat. Mac & Cheese was creamy, peppery and rather simple but stands on its own 2 feet. The two standouts for me was the cheese grits & the Frito Pie. The cheese grits were so creamy, not dry and had a savory flavor with a hint of jalapeño. So so good. The Frito pie was amazing, first of all they put a ton of sliced moist brisket on top, which while it wasn’t the best for eating with the Frito pie itself, the fact you get a ton of brisket is a selling point on its own, and that brisket covered in their salsa verde with cilantro is spectacular. The Frito pie is just so good, it’s very chunky with large onions, jalapeño slices, and carrot slices?? (I’m not sure if it was carrots I did not care while shoving it in my mouth). Everyone I encountered was super nice, even ran into the man himself and he was friendly, chatted with some people in line, talked to strangers about BBQ. The whole experience was a great time and I’ll be sure to make by way back down here again. Secret tip, if there’s no tables available there’s one kinda hidden in the front of the bar. Thx Mitch
Some of the best barbecue I've ever had. I had the pulled lamb, pork ribs, brisket, sausage, jalapeño cheese grits, beet salad and lemon poppyseed slaw. All of the meats were exceptional, pulled lamb is a bit unique and I'm so glad that I got it. It's honestly really hard to say which meats I liked best because they were all great. The cheddar jalapeño grits were exceptionally good, one of the best bbq sides I've ever had. The beets were pretty good and the coleslaw was alright, I would try something different next time.
I came here to visit for a couple of days and I had to go here twice! The woman who took the orders was extremely kind and patient. I really like their outdoor seating and the ambience they have created. The brisket was to die for! I also really loved the jalapeño cheddar grits. We also tried the pulled lamb, and that was definitely something unique to some of the other barbecue places we went to. I brought some brisket home to San Francisco and it was equally delicious as eating it fresh! If you don’t want to wait in the long lines this is DEFINITELY worth a try!
Best BBQ of our trip to Austin. Had Micklethwait recommended to us from several people. Arrived at noon to a line that took about 20 min. Even before we got our food, the lady taking our order was the one of the nicest staff we met on our trip. Food was amazing, for mains we had the brisket, pork ribs and pulled lamb. They were each so good that I can't even rank them. For sides we had the beet salad, mac and cheese and beans. Again, they were all so good that I can't even judge which was best. Two meat plates (with two sides) were $17. Meat was also sold by the pound (I heard there may be some sort of family deal that isn't listed, so ask them if you are there with a big family (5) ). There is another building on site that you can buy drinks at. They had sweet tea and also a hibiscus mint tea (free refills offered). We will definitely be back when in town and can highly recommend this place.
Glad I came across them on a Google search and a few reviews were enough for me to head their way. Great ambiance for a casual hangout and delicious BBQ 😋 I got brisket and sausage to go. I stopped by around 3 pm on a week day it was over 100 degrees outside 🥵. The gentleman taking my order suggested I wait inside the air conditioned building on the property and he brought my order to me packaged and ready to go with a small sample bite (really nice gesture). The building is a small cafe/ store front with a selection of local beer, coffee, some baked goods, and the ice cream they make. I got some cold brew iced coffee and ice cream (delicious and not too sweet)
By far one of the best if not the best places in Austin for BBQ. You can go and stand in lines at many other places and at times here too but Micklethwait, has never let me down with the quality of their food. I've eaten here for over 5 years and still come at least once a month. Their smoked barbacoa is perfect. They also are offering weekly soecisl dishes that are amazing. They make their own sausage and have a variety of rotating sides that make you wonder how they can cook such delicious food and the small space, well, they do it and do it well. You're ever nearby, it's worth a stop in.
We and everyone else went to Austin for the eclipse and yes, we waited in line for two hours for BBQ. So what do you buy after waiting two hours? The family feast for just two people! We waited in line, we wanted it all, and man, it was good! I loved the bar to get a drink while we waited, and everyone was so friendly. The brisket was amazing, and as someone that isn't a potato salad fan, I loved their potato salad! The grits were sold out so I suppose that means I'll have to revisit Austin again. I would highly recommend!
First time coming and EVERYTHING about it was amazing. I had a 3 meat plate - brisket, turkey, ribs. All three were outstanding, but I have to say the Brisket and ribs alone will keep me coming back. And let’s not forget about the sides. It was hard to choose, but I ended up with the Jalepeño Cheese Grits and the Braised Green Beans - again both superb, but the grits stole the show. Will be back to keep trying!!
Went to the Grand Opening. The food is delicious. The service is great, very helpful and friendly. All the sides are delicious. I really enjoyed the beets, cheesy grits, and Mac n Cheese. The banana pudding was the best I ever had. The cookies were top notch. I am not the biggest meat eater. The brisket was good. I am more of a sides person. My friends enjoyed the ribs and brisket. They said sausage was okay.
What an unexpected treat! I honestly didn’t anticipate the food being this good, but it completely impressed me. The brisket was outstanding—perfectly textured, incredibly juicy, and carrying just the right amount of spice. The pulled pork was just as impressive: tender, flavorful, and cooked with real care. Every bite had that comforting, smoky richness you hope for but don’t always find. It’s rare to stumble upon a place that delivers this level of quality without expecting it, and now I’m already looking forward to my next visit. I’ll definitely be coming back for more!
If you’re looking for the best BBQ in Austin, stop scrolling. Micklethwait is the real deal. We tackled the brisket, pork ribs, and the massive beef rib, and every single one was divine. The bark on the brisket is perfection, and the beef rib is like butter—massive flavor and perfectly rendered. Don't skip the "sweets" side of the menu, either. The pecan cookie is out of this world and the perfect way to cap off a heavy meal. Essential Austin eating. Plates are big enough to share.
Top 3 in the area and completely underrated. Every meat is arguably a top tier, we'll seasoned, but not breaking away from Texas BBQ. Brisket executed very very well and a must get along with the beef rib. Lamb and Pork shoulder interesting to try for some non standard options but not the reason I would come back. Every side (didn't try green beans) was awesome. Mac and Cheese a must get. Nothing crazy but again well executed and really enjoyable. Banana pudding a solid end to the meal. We arrived 10:40 on a Saturday, waited 30 minutes to order and had our food 30 minutes after that. Easily see coming back here often since everything was amazing and the line is manageable.
Nut allergy friendly! Nothing I ordered had any issues and I don't think they have anything with nuts. First off, Google Maps takes you to a weird spot. They do have some parking. We got in around 11:30AM on a Sunday and were shocked that there was no line after driving by the absurdity that is Franklin's. I came with an 18-pack of beer prepared to share with people! Anyway... They do have a bar at Saddle Up. It took 22 minutes for us to receive the buzzer notification for our Family Pack (5-6 people). We added a 0.5lb of the lamb. I'd definitely do the beef rib here if I return. Anyway, that family pack fed 9 people comfortably! Everyone had their own favorites. Online it says that they give 3 quarts of sides but on site I was offered 4 pints so I'm not sure which is correct. Highlights were the cucumber salad and grits for the sides, and the sausage for meats. Their spicy barbecue sauce was also phenomenal. Will happily return to try their beef rib some day.
4.7 Last meal in Austin and I needed to have BBQ. A number of places were recommended and I went with Micklethwait and it didn't disappoint. I went for the brisket and the sausage as that's their speciality and award winning. For sides I went for the BBQ baked beans and Mac and cheese. We also had a double order of pork shoulder, slaw and green beans. Overall, terrific. Lovely setting, outdoors. The flies are a bit annoying but the food....worth it. And it's Texas BBQ....don't pour the sauce.
Brisket was great. Good seasoning & flavor. Took a chance on the chili and it ended being my favorite. It was packed with meat, flavor & spice. Complimentary pickles were a nice touch and also great. Walked right up to counter on Thursday at 11:30. Absolute solid choice.
Amazing Texas BBQ! The brisket was incredibly tender and full of smoky flavor, and the sides were just as impressive. Friendly service and a relaxed atmosphere, definitely a must visit spot in Austin
Lovely humans work here! So friendly! What a great space & outdoor patio. There was live music when we came-bonus! My husband said the brisket melted in his mouth. I don’t eat meat, and there were so many delicious sides + fresh-baked bread! Highly recommend!
Hands down, the best BBQ we’ve ever had. We came in knowing this place was world-renowned and somehow it still exceeded every expectation. The chopped beef was perfection, but don’t make the mistake of focusing only on the meats. The sides are on another level. Every single one we tried was creative, comforting, and unforgettable. And whatever you do, do not skip the cheese grits. They’re life-changing. Jackie embodies true Southern hospitality—warm, genuine, and unforgettable. She made us feel like family from the moment we walked in. Micklethwait didn’t just feed us. It made our entire Austin trip. This will be the #1 reason we come back. We’d gladly wait in line around the block for this experience again. Much love ❤️ We’ll be back soon.
Lean brisket and turkey meat while still very flavorful (just what we wanted) and love that the potato salad you can actually see the real potato slices and it’s not too creamy (healthier). The greens were fire too. So good. My girlfriend posed with the bread but we didn’t eat it because we are trying to eat clean. But it looked light and fluffy if you like that kind of bread.
First time here, but have known about it's popularity for years. Brisket very moist and flavorful. Can't say it's the best I've had, but very good. Cheesy hot link likewise very good. Herbed potato salad quite tasty and a great compliment to the meat. Best of all (and a big surprise) was the cookie! AMAZING!!! Very friendly service. Rustic dog-friendly picnic style area is as well as indoor seating.
We really enjoyed our lunch at Micklethwait BBQ! I had their Reuben and my buddies had their brisket. The meat was outstanding and the sides were great as well. They have a good local beer selection as well. I suggest trying their Pilsner. It was a cold day and they moved heaters by our table outside. The staff was very attentive and we had an awesome Meetup as a result. All that said, I highly recommend Micklethwait BBQ!
I pray to the brisket. I feel enlightened by the tasty and quite delicate ribs. I have confessed my sins to the plump juicy sausage. I have basked in the glory of the side of greens and mac and cheese. The sweet tea has washed away my demons and cleansed my soul. The only church I'll ever attend.
Craft BBQ is legit. Very underrated. Very good. If you're on a time crunch visiting austin then I recommend you waste no time waiting at other bbq spots and just come eat here. They got great bbq. And great people working. Very nice and generous people. They are very passionate with their craft. I told them that theyre my 3rd bbq spot of the day and Ive asked for just 2 slices of brisket and 2 pieces of spare ribs, but they gifted me a 3rd on the house. Theyre awesome. My biggest regret was not coming here right when they opened to get the freshest bbq...even arriving at 3/4pm, the bbq was still very good. Seasoned well. Right amount of tenderness as well. Like the locals say on reddit, skip the wait and tourist spots and come here.
I ordered the 3 meat plate. I picked the brisket, pork ribs and the Barbacoa. As for the sides I went with the jalapeño cheese grits and the campfire chili beans. I'll get right to the point, the Barbacoa was the most outstanding bite of BBQ I've had in my life. It was smoking, juicy, tender. It was simply perfect. The brisket was delicious as well perfect smoked and seasoned. I enjoyed the ribs but next to the other meats I ordered just didn't stand up to how good they were. Dont get me wrong the ribs were great the other to meats were just that much better in my opinion. The grits were fantastic, cheesy and had a nice little kick from the jalapeño. The beans were ok, I kinda wish I would've went with a different side though. We showed up right as they opened and there was only a small line (shocking because of how great the food was) the staff was super friendly and helpful. I would say the price of everything is on par with most of the other BBQ joints in the area.
Micklethwait has been one of my longtime favorites, and the new location takes everything I already loved and makes it even better. The BBQ is outstanding, especially the sausage, which has just the right amount of spice and a perfect snap, and the pork rib plate, which is smoky, tender, and practically falls off the bone. The Mac and cheese and cheese grits sides are just as impressive. And those housemade pickles!! The carne asada taco special is another standout, with flavorful charred beef and fresh toppings that make every bite balanced and satisfying. And if you’re debating whether to spend $4 on their cookie, go for it. It’s everything a cookie should be: chewy, buttery, and the ideal sweet finish to an amazing meal. Excellent food, stellar service, and a relaxed atmosphere including beautiful outdoor seating make this place an easy five stars.
We came to Micklethwait from multiple friends' recommendations during our week-long trip San Antonio to Austin. It was fantastic! For 2 people, we ordered the brisket, pork ribs, cheesy hot link, with mac n cheese and green beans sides. I normally don't prefer dry rub ribs, but they were amazing, so flavorful. The green beans were also perfect and a great tangy compliment to the meats. We were really impressed by the cheesy hot link - it was staff-recommended since they're known for their sausages. We came in around noon on a Friday, and we waited a bit to order but not long - and the food is prepared immediately. Staff were so friendly, helpful and welcoming - we would definitely return for the service (and the food). The indoor and outdoor seating areas are both really nice - great space for groups. Parking was also not hard to find on their street. The flavors of Micklethwait were really unforgettable, and we hope to return soon!
Listen, everyone knows Micklethwait is the best bbq in Austin. I say this in the best way, I hope they never get a Michelin star and a bunch of out of towners eat at this gem. Venue and patio garden, sick. Prices, reasonable! But its the taco specials for lunch or dinner for $15 that change weekly keep me coming back!
I’ve been following Micklethwait Barbeque for a while, back when they had their popular food truck, and finally got the chance to check out their new physical location. The space itself is great, the staff is awesome, and the food did not disappoint. The pulled lamb was incredible, the brisket was top-notch, and the pork ribs were absolutely delicious. The green chili grits might be some of the best grits I’ve ever had, and the mac & cheese was off the charts. If you’re in Austin or just visiting, I’d highly recommend stopping by, these guys are definitely up there with the big names in town.

Good barbecue. Great sides. There's a wait at lunch but it's worth the wait. In a food truck.
Picked up some Brisket at the end of the day. Staff was super nice. The Brisket was absolutely fantastic super tasty and moist. We didn't dine in but they have a nice dining room and the outdoor sp…
Excellent ordering and distancing scheme. Contactless pay. I had the smash burger as is with red onions cheese Tom-Tom sauce and their self-made pickles. It was quite good. Also sampled half-pound of pork ribs. Tender and flavorful. Nice seasoning crust. The lemon poppyseed cole slaw is delicious. The meat doesn’t require sauce but their sauce has a really good citrus presence and it does enhance nicely.
I think the sides are better than the meats. Maybe just an off day. The brisket tasted more like pot roast or a pastrami than brisket. The pulled pork shoulder wasn’t pulled and was very dry. The sausage was good. The jalapeño cheddar grits were amazing. The beans were really good. The potato salad and slaw were good, not great. They ran out of the pulled lamb. I was hoping to try that. Next time. Bbq sauce was okay. Could have used better sauce for the dry pork shoulder. Great outdoor seating area.
Micklethwait is another solid barbecue spot that is deserving of its high rankings on many lists. It is also a fun name to say. The brisket is very good, the sausage is good as well. I think the sides I chose were good in taste and portion, but I have to admit I can’t remember exactly what I got… The parking was challenging when it was busy, but I realize that’s pretty much the story anywhere around here these days. The food and experience were good and I will definitely be back.
My bro and cousin decided that we wanted to go to find some BBQ and this place was recommended by a friend of mine. There was not a wait as we went when it was a little gloomy out. When we got there I ordered the 2 meat plate with the brisket and sausage with cream corn and beans. The brisket was really good with good bark and good smoke to it. The Sausage was good but it was a little dry. The cream corn was good as well but I think it needed a little bit more sweetness to it. The beans were delicious. It had some brisket in the beans so it created different taste as well as flavor and texture. We also ordered the pork ribs and they were really good. I would DEFINITELY come back and order the ribs. I would definitely recommend this place for some really good BBQ
I heard a lot of good things about this place so I came with very high expectations. It was good but not great. Brisket and sausages were good, but nothing extraordinary. I really liked the mac and cheese. Free beer sponsored by Karbach. Friendly staff. In general I think it's a good bbq place and line is usually not that long (we just had to wait around 15 minutes).
Good BBQ, I enjoyed a 3 meat plate with 2 sides. I'd have to say my favourite was the Turkey and the mac-n-cheese but it was all very tasty. Plenty of food, I didn't go hungry. When I visited it wasn't too busy but it was lightly raining and I believe it can get very busy in good weather.
Enjoyed the day, sitting outside for lunch. Greeted by nice folks. Had pulled pork, brisket, beans and country potato salad. Pulled pork was super - moist and smoky. Brisket was cooked beautifully, would like to have had a more smoky flavor on that. Potato salad was really good. Interesting recipe. Husband said the beans were good also. Very nice guy in the little house with the drinks. It was a good day and we would go back. 🌟🌟🌟🌟 (Would rate 4.3)
The staff were very kind, and the food was delicious! In particular, the brisket, ribs, and cheese sausage were out of this world! We also got the grits side, which was similarly incredible.
There’s a huge lot around the building for parking. Cute place! Outdoor seating that is dog friendly. They had live entertainment Sunday which was nice. Umbrellas and fans help make it comfortable outside. Staff were so amazing! They all had smiles and were very friendly! Unfortunately, the only food I liked was the brisket and pork ribs in their bbq sauce. The mac n cheese was good. As far as the coleslaw and greens, they are unique and I am not a fan. I found the chili to be overpowering. The frozen lemonade was great! I’d for sure go back to chill but I would not spend $150 again.
The wait time was a little long. The atmosphere outside was amazing, band playing pee enjoying the day. The food was good (forgot to take a picture). Pulled lamb, man and cheese

Had the BRISKET and PORK RIBS --chef's kiss! All the sides are a must-try, and the staff couldn't be friendlier. ENJOY! \n\nPS: Parking lot is quite small, street pakring is going to be best.

Service (7/10): Again, these guys were really nice people. But this happens to be another one of those bbq spots that operates like a food truck. You don’t interact with the person as he/she is slicing up your brisket. This runs counter to the bbq experience. I asked for 1/3 lb of brisket sliced from the moist end, and some burnt ends from the moist end. I waited a couple minutes, and on my order I saw about a 1/3 lb of burnt ends that looked like they were cut from the flat. My experience here reaffirmed my conviction that direct interaction with the person slicing your brisket is an absolute necessity. Brisket (7/10): while I ended up getting something that more resembled the flat, it was still pretty darn good thanks to the expertly rendered fat cap. I was expecting more of a punch in the seasoning, though. Given that it’s burnt ends we’re talking about. Pulled lamb (7/10): Didn’t really taste like lamb. Just tasted and felt like really dry beef. Tasted pretty decent tho Cheese grits (8/10): was a great sidekick for the pulled lamb. Made the dry meat more palatable. Did what a side should do. ——@eddythefoodcritic
Table of 4 during Sunday lunch time. Waited ~30 min to order. We all ordered the 3 taco plate and some a side as well. First two orders of tacos came out relatively quickly. One was incorrect and sent back. Took a while to get that ordered returned - and it was cold. The other two taco plates took even longer, but at least they were warm, although one tortilla was quite toasted. They forgot the sides as well. Overall food was good but service could use improvement.
Meh. This is a kind of trendy/fancy bbq place with prices to match. We liked the brisket pretty well - crusty and juicy. The sausage was so-so. Pork ribs were not so good. Mac and cheese side dish …

Stunned how a history of such great reviews contrasts from our experience today. A typical Rudy’s has better BBQ than what we were served today. We ordered at 1pm so a bit late. Brisket was dry and bark undeveloped. Shockingly bad. Sausage was excellent but held too long. Ribs dry and sadly cold. Grits were pretty good. Beans and slaw were meh. Service was outstanding. Outside seating was excellent. I so wanted the food to be better. I would not return other than to see if we hit an unlucky day.
