This place was highly recommended to me, because I'm from New Orleans and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE fish and shrimp! I have now visited Sam's twice in Beaumont, TX...I have had the seafood FRIED and GRILLED. I can honestly say it is DELICIOUS, and it's the closest taste to NOLA food that I've ever experienced in TeXas. I truly ENJOYED every bite, it was SEASONED perfectly, the STRING BEANS are also cooked perfectly...and I APPRECIATED my plates being cooked FRESH to order.

Food was good. No table service. Furniture were a little outdated. Lighting was a little low. And cash register was very busily decorated with restocking stuff that never gets moved. They consider one whole catfish as opposed to half of a piece of catfish is one, which is good. Catfish could use a little bit more seasoning. Although, the catfish was really good and crispy on the outside and soft and flakey on the inside. Almost cooked to perfection! The shrimp seemed like it had been pre-battered and frozen. Shrimp could’ve used a little bit of Cajun seasoning. It reminded me of the shrimp tempura that you see at Japanese style steakhouse. French fries were really good. Crispy on the outside soft on the inside. They had a nice seasoning added to them. A creole type of seasoning on the french fries. Mac and cheese was equivalent to Kraft. Red beans and rice was that of instant rice and beans were canned. Nothing fancy or tasty. Bread that came with it was toasted Mrs Baird’s.

This is a mixed review about Sam's southern eatery. I got 3 fish 3 shrimp fried with red beans rice and green beans for sides. The fried fish was overcooked. Shrimp may have been over cooked as well. However I still ate cause the portions were huge . If they were cooked right I would of gave a better rating . But maybe it's hard to cook the bigger portions just right . The red beans and rice were phenomenal,just like Popeyes . Delicious. Grenbeans taste like they were from a can. I will be back to try again . I'll just remind them not to over cook my fish and shrimp next time . For the atmosphere of the restaurant,I went early in the morning on a week day, so wasn't busy ,the sitting area could use a remodel. But hey i wasn't there to sit and eat. I got take out. Hope this place is even better next time! Go try them!

The food was mediocre and cost way too much. There are plenty of other seafood restaurants that are better than this one. The service was excellent, but the atmosphere was too loud for us. Having said that, it is a very large place and was quite full, so that was to be expected. I will give very high marks do the onion rings. They were outstanding.

UPDATED: This used to be my favorite place on College Street and the best place for fried livers. But not now. I got a box of livers and okra to go yesterday (10/13/25) and the okra was so hard with strings as to be inedible and the livers- they were ROCKS. Damn near burnt up. I tried cutting them to see if anything was salvageable and they are dried up as well as any jerky you could buy. This isn’t a cook having an off day- this is someone who hates livers cooking them with all their spiteful passion. Y’all ruined what used to be a beautiful thing for me as a customer. I don’t think I can trust you for anything to-go ever again. I used to eat here with my dad once a month. He’s gone now, and I can’t bear to sully those memories. You can’t hardly find a chicken place that offers gizzards and livers let alone a restaurant that knows how to make them- but this place makes their food like they love you! Everything my family ate from the okra and livers to the shrimp, chicken & fish was PERFECT. Try the fried green tomatoes! You’ll be glad you did. Seating is limited, but they serve generous portions in takeaway boxes. A new family favorite place for us. Sam, you have great people working for you! They’re doing excellent work and are worthy to be praised.

This is not a southern eatery even in the slightest. There is no meatloaf, chicken fried steak mashed potatoes, or sweet tea. This a seafood place. The inside is dirty and the soda machine has probably never been cleaned.

I have been eating here for years until yesterday I bought my usual meal from them and bought my niece food as well. We were food poisoned vomiting and diarrhea all night that was the ONLY place we ate from yesterday. My body so weak my niece can’t walk I’m now waiting on my son to pick us both up and bring us to the ER. I’m too weak to drive it really took a toll on me and my niece. Please do better even with cleaning because we could’ve died. It’s not sanitary because the homeless come in off the streets and get free soda out the machine without properly hand washing I saw them with my own eyes…. Today I purchased 2 fried catfish dinners. The young lady who rung me up only gave one small cup of Tatar sauce for each meal. She hestistated with rudeness stating only 2 per customer. Mind you it’s 2 dinners. That’s not enough Tatar sauce for all that food. Same issue with the ketchup. One per meal. I had already spent right at $25 for those 2 meals. She should have proudly without hesitation and rudness given what I ask for. Never again, I will bring business there. Take somewhere. Let me not forget the people ahead of me had the same issue with the cashier. Rudeness/ very stingy with the condiments.

I have noticed that they are beginning to split one piece of fish and call it TWO. That is so unfair. The food is great, but that is unscrupulous when they are charging the same price. And the pieces I received on the last two visits have been ultra THIN!!! And those philly cheese steak sandwiches are dry. I tried it based on the reviews. 3/15/25: Someone posted a comment about them on Best Bites and I informed the individual that they SPLIT ONE piece of fish down the middle and call it TWO. They responded that they "do not"! I went back today, 8 years later, and the price is now $15.14 and THEY DO STILL cut the fish down the middle and have increased the price. RIDICULOUS!

First let me say the customer service was wonderful.. But I was disappointed with my food. My tomatoes looked old. My livers were fried too long and everything was very soggy. I honestly think maybe it was time to change the grease or something. And they need to maybe poke holes on the containers that way it won’t make the fried foods soggy!
