The Chicken Soup here is out of this world! If there's one reason to try this place out it's that chicken soup. You will keep coming back!
The food is excellent and the staff is really nice. I only wished they were opened 7 days out of the week and closed little later than usual.
All the congee bowls I've tried are nutritious and tasty but the breakfast pork bowl is so easy to eat. Perfect for a meal before a long work day
Maya idk who you are but this food is good okay? The breakfast sandwich has truly changed my life. Also the congee? It snatched my soul from my body. DELICIOUS.
On the recommendation of our AirBnB host, we came for a sandwich - so so delicious! The PBLAT sandwich was outstanding. Local, excellent quality, everything fresh - thank you!
Love this place. Great congee + sandwiches. Can't go wrong. Fun atmosphere with big glasses windows/natural light. The sambal is absolutely amazing.
Great sandwiches and drinks. The pork and chicken Bahn mi were delicious!
I hope this place is open forever. Their chicken bowl is so damn good smh
Very tasty Vietnamese coffee and the employees were so nice and hot. Also tried my first congee here and was pleasantly surprised 😮 thanks
Chicken ginger soup is absolutely amazing! Will definitely be returning.
Blessed to live down the block from here. Great food, great coffee, and a bunch of cool groceries. Staff is super nice. A proper gem.
Delicious delicious delicious. Super flavorful & thoughtful food that gives you a true feeling of comfort! Sweet staff too :)
This place is special. The coffee is great, everyone who works here is a delight, and the congee will make you feel like a better version of yourself.
Sooo DELICIOUS!!! I had the Biggie’s hoagie! Fire crackers in my mouth!!! The ladies are so sweet as well! Will definitely come back!
Love Maya, best breakfast around. But I can't order my Viet-coffees online anymore! What going on?
A banh mi that is not to be missed. Staff always warm and welcoming.
Chicken congee was so flavorful and delicious!!! Rlly cute shop:)
the pork belly avocado is the best breakfast sandwich in Brooklyn. Unseats Bread & Spread. Good playlist too.
Absolute fire 🙏🏼 I inhaled my congee. The black sesame latte is very delicious as well as refreshing. Thank you 💕
I'd never had congee before trying this place and it was delicious! Will definitely be ordering from here again and trying other dishes on the menu.
Amazing iced Vietnamese coffee! Such a cute spot to sit and relax
Food and service were fantastic. Cozy little sandwich shop, unique atmosphere, food is fresh and made right where you can see it.
I haven't been here but that looks like real italian bread seeded..I'm in California but was partially raised in Brooklyn..I miss that NY bread...I hate sour dough..when I visit Brooklyn to see family i will stop at Bed Stuy Provision.
suchhh a great spot ❤️ food is great, atmosphere is cozy and the staff are mad chill and personable Also hella Asian food groceries r here too which is rad. I get the vegan congee bowl almost daily and I will continue 2 do that 💯💯💯
Literally My favorite place for a warm Cooked Authentic Asian Staple that I grew up on as an asian american without the artificial ingredients typically used in asain cooking. The quality of food here goes above and beyond what most asian restaurants offer and the food is thought out with sophistication and care to stimulate old world flavors with modern day convenience. The people and service here are also incredible. Congee is a health food staple for those with weak digestive issues and I'm so grateful that this is in my local neighborhood. Highly recommend trying it at least once!
This place is amazing! I thought I didn’t like congee and I was completely wrong. The congee is incredible, the place itself is adorable and they also have a ton of great staples in the market area. You can also grab an espresso or Vietnamese coffee while you’re there :) Such a positive place!
Great place to grab hot congee and drinks for a picnic in Herbert von King Park. Also, awesome selection of cooking stuff, ramen, spices, tea, Chinese sauces. Boba tea is a big plus! They have hot and cold drinks, and rice bowls, including breakfast bowls. Vegan, vegetarian, and meat options.
The chicken sandwich was great! The spicy crunch congee was good as well, as other reviews state it’s definitely different from other congee I’ve had but it makes for a good healthy lunch.
Not your average breakfast sandwich, but SO, SO GOOD. I could talk about it for hours. Holy moley, I want another one like right now. Asian flavours, runny egg, perfect veg, amazing bread. Better than a BEC any day. Plus the tunes are pure decent
The best of the best! classic nurturing dishes with a unique twist, my go to place anytime I am In the neighborhood! This is Asian fusion done right.
Chicken congee and scallion pancake wrap were both soooo tasty. Definitely coming back soon!
There's something exhausting and all too familiar about oatmeal, and when you come for Maya Congee, that tiredness gets wiped away by the by quality and format of various porridge on the menu. With soft egg, kimchis and broccoli salad, stewed pork and espresso drinks, there's no shortage of touchpoints throughout your breakfast order, even if none of these things are typically ordered in your household, albeit at all. Can't recommend more strongly for those mornings when strength and stability are sought before the chores of the day begin.
Delicious congee and boba. The spicy congee doesn’t lie (hot!) and is a generous portion, and the boba is the perfect sweetness with a generous amount of tapioca. Downside is outdoor seating only (humid during summer).
I haven't physically visited yet, but I used to get their great breakfast sandwiches delivered when I was living in the area! I highly recommend. I need to make a point to get over there; good grub!
One of my favorite neighborhood spots. The congee bowls are amazing! I love the selection of groceries that can be purchased. Definitely a great addition to bedstuy!
Fabulous Congee and Banh Mi.....and a great variety of quality products - Australian chai! They also kept my waterbottle for 2 weeks after I left it there, and I found it there yesterday! so kind!
Walking into Maya Congee Café on a blisteringly cold day felt like stepping into a haven. Despite being visibly busy, the staff greeted me warmly, showcasing their dedication not only to service but also to the intricate details of the dishes and drinks they were crafting. In a moment of panic (and hunger), I panic-ordered the ginger chicken soup—an absolute steal for the price. The broth was perfectly balanced, and the chicken was incredibly moist, making each bite a comforting delight. Letting it cool slightly before diving in, I found that this simple dish transformed my entire day. I’ve since learned you can add sweet potato noodles to the soup, and I’ll absolutely try that next time. For anyone seeking a soul-warming meal, I cannot recommend the ginger chicken soup enough. Kudos to the owner for curating such a stellar team. Their kindness, skill, and care truly elevate the experience. Maya Congee Café is officially on my must-return list—again and again.
I am mid sandwich while writing this, but felt it was necessary to comment before I forgot. The pork breakfast sandwich with soft boiled egg, avocado, on ciabatta was absolutely divine. Highly recommend for hangover, or any other time. I can’t wait to try the rest of the menu.
The congee here is delicious! I got the pork duckin' with the century egg and oh my gods!! I'll be come back here just to experience those flavors again. The pork was tender and easy to eat, and the flavor of the century egg brought it to a whole nother level. My brother got the pork breakfast congee and seemed to thoroughly enjoy that as well! The passion fruit lemonade was tart, and not too sweet. The black sesame milk tea was so nutty and creamy, perfect flavors! Great flavors, so comforting. The staff here was super personable and chatted with me a little! Friendly staff like that goes a long way. Also, I don't know what brand of chili crisp they have here either or if they make it in house, but it is insanely good! (Someone let me know please lol) Will be coming back here ASAP.
They have this amazing chicken ginger soup I always get whenever I’m not feeling well, it’s so delicious and I swear it’s magic. I also love their grocery component!
Sweetest, homiest place in Bed Stuy, the congee is so velvety and comfortable 🥰 Neighborhood oasis, overflowing well of so much positive energy and good people shoutout to Jun and Morgan for making this wet grimy morning start off with love
Delicious!! Had the avocado congee, highly recommend for those who are cool with grits/oatmeal texture. Egg is soft boiled but not runny. Includes crunchy onions and cilantro as a garnish. 10/10
UPDATE: Since this exchange, the restaurant has had excellent service, consistently good congee, and I’m very excited for all the changes it’s making lately. My favorite recent dish was a rice bowl with sausage! ——————————————————————— I don't leave reviews often, but over the past few months the quality of the food has been wildly inconsistent at the Gates Ave location. Some days would serve congee at the perfect consistency and level of flavor, but most it would be watery and tasteless (I even took a covid test to confirm!). Ordering here is a dice roll on whether you get good food or service--never both. This place could be a hit, so I hope something changes very soon.
I ordered the vegetarian and the Milo mocha latte, it was delicious . The plate sounds simple yet it was beautifully presented. It is unassuming yet a gemstone.
I really enjoyed their Vietnamese coffee, unique sandwiches and tasting Congee bowels. The owner who is there most of the time is extremely nice and her staff is on point when it comes to customer service. Which is very important to me. I always feel welcome when I come and by the taste of their food you can tell it's made with love.
Today was my first time here. I had just left the Mexican restaurant next door due to rude service...when I walked into this place, I was greeted immediately. The Staff was kind and helpful. I ordered a chicken Banh MI and an Ice tea. This was the best Banh Mi sandwich that I have ever had. I like the vibe of this place and will definitely be back!
Lived across the street for a short time. I don’t believe there is one tiny gem of REALLY AWESOME Asian flavor shop right next to me!! in the middle of Bedstuy. I’m Chinese and all the sauce/candies/snacks they have there are memory and some of them still my favorite. The sandwich is awesome. the sauce and egg and pork belly is great, and the baguette(?) is crunchy and tasty.
I would give them 10 stars if I could. Discovered this place in 2018. This was the first time I had congee, I fell in love. I tried the entire menu (expect for pork items) and I love them all, but the Gone Fishin’ got my heart. I have a bowl once a month at least, or I don’t feel whole.
This place is new to me and amazing! So convenient to have a mini Asian grocery store in the neighborhood. Their food is amazing, love the whitefish sandwich!! Don’t miss the boozy cocktails. Staff is super friendly and knowledgeable. Thanks!
This spot is simply the bees knees! Delicious food (especially the congee), super welcoming space, lovely atmosphere & service. The owner is fantastic. There's no restroom available but everything else here is of such endearing quality that it doesn't even matter. I wish this little neighborhood place much success, it truly deserves it.
This is my favorite place in bed stuy. The owner and staff are incredibly personable, warm and kind. The prepared food is creative and delicious and the dry goods for sale on the shelves are affordable and also high quality. The sun streams in and there are plants everywhere and good music. It's perfect!
Charming trading post curated with local Brooklyn products and Asian goods, serving fresh roasted coffee, Thai iced coffee, matcha espresso and ice matcha lemonade with delicious breakfast and lunch sandwiches and their new Congee rice bowls. They've also got great vegetarian options and homemade baked goods.
This place is phenomenal! Comforting food that's delicious and easy on the tummy (just what I needed), run by really nice people. I can't wait to go back for more.
I enjoyed my meal so much yesterday I came back in today to try a different bowl and order a take out item for later. I am learning about congee and its health benefits and love this concept for a cafe to stop in and get a yummy and healthy meal. The owner and staff are friendly and I cant wait to come back and try a new item on the menu! Today I ordered Tofu and wild mushroon and added kimchi and salted duck egg. So yummy!
Highly recommend! Maya Congee catered my daughter’s 100 day celebration with chicken banh mi, veggie banh mi, and chicken & ginger soup. Everyone who attended raved about the food! The entire catering process was so smooth and personalized. Cannot thank this team enough for making my daughter’s special day so memorable.
Tiny but super cute and friendly neighborhood cafe! Their “wake me up” congee with pork and broccoli is delicious and super filling. I had it in the height of the summer but I imagine it would be perfect winter comfort food as well. I also loooove the selection of international flavors aside from their in-house menu — they sell East and South Asian brands of chili sauce, sesame oil, vinegar, wasabi powder and other sauces and condiments, plus a variety of local Brooklyn food/drink brands. They even have shrimp chips 😮
I love this spot so much. The congee is consistently incredible-I am so grateful to have them in the neighborhood. They also make this ginger turmeric soup blend that they serve with chicken, and I am obsessed with it. This has been a staple for me this winter and I’m excited to try evening else on the menu.
Nice neighborhood micro Asian market + restaurant specializing in Congee. There’s a large assortment of quality Asian ingredients and ephemera that most Asian Americans will recognize, what a delight. The chicken congee was quite tasty and had a nice texture balance, very delicious! If you’re scared that it’s gonna be too mushy and gooey, it’s not like that. The pork banh mi was good with tender and nicely seasoned pork, along a delicious turmeric salsa. Definitely not the most traditional but they mention that on the menu. Delicious bread. Will be coming back for more !
This might be my favorite lowkey spot in the neighborhood. I’ve always walked past but never had the time to come in. I’ve only eaten congee that my friend has made, so I was skeptical to try another! But I was not disappointed! It was truly deliciously and hearty! I’ve been craving a nice home cooked meal and this is exactly what this felt like. I will be back!
I've been coming to Maya for some years now. My favorite thing to grab frequently is the chicken ginger soup. Every time I go back home and eat it, I always regret not buying two, haha. My first time trying congee was here and so I don't have anything to compare it to but it was delicious and flavorful. My husband loves the sandwiches, and I also shop ingredients to cook with in their little asian market.
Really loved the congee at Maya! Interesting take on the often plain uninspired rice porridge. It's pricey but worth it for the enormous serving and indulgent ingredients. I'd give it 5 stars but... they serve everything in plastic containers even when you eat in which all end up in landfill (we were told not to put it in the plastic bin for recycling since it's dirty) - it just felt so wasteful :(
It’s a very small interior. There are only two tables to sit. I recommend ordering to go. Interesting menu with nutritional options.
It is quaint and cozy. The atmosphere is friendly and laid back. The menu is simple, delicious, and organic. I live on the block and never tried it. Glad I made the stop this morning. Welcome to the neighborhood!!
A very hip and trendy vibe. I found this place on accident and was pleasantly surprised. The coffee was potent and the banh mi sandwich super flavorful. Will return.
Sure, it's not traditional congee, but it's really tasty and I love the variety! Got the wake me up which had pork egg and avocado and it was an incredibly filling brunch. I only wish I had some chili oil or chili crunch to add a bit of spice and flavor.
I like the concept of comfort food + asian food bodega combo. It is a fun shop that has a lot to offer. The menu is unique and fun combinations. I tried a whitefish bahn mi and a congee. They were executed well, but I found them to be a bit too salty. Finally, the black sesame drink was good, but the seseme wasn't completely blended in. There were some flecks of sesame that made the drink a little grainy. Maybe a preference thing, but I prefer something more smooth. I like the concept, but just have some nitpicks on the execution.
Def a western twist on traditional congee, which is supposed to be 'plain' and light on the stomach. But still, I enjoyed this variation: generous amount of toppings, rich flavors and spices, over a heartier grain base. I do wish the ratio gives you more congee than toppings though. I also liked the sesame milk tea, which wasn't too sweet!
The service was friendly and it was cool that they had some unique Korean and Japanese provisions, but the coffee is lackluster and the food way over priced for what you get. I got the breakfast sandwich and left still hungry.
I can’t speak for the food, but, I just ordered an iced Vietnamese coffee and received an iced coffee (quite weak) with condensed milk for nearly $7. Bummer.
A different take on a Asian tradition dish. A lot of strong flavors going on with every bite and at times too much. I guess I'm old school and just like my congee simple (pork with thousand yr old egg, fish, seafood etc...) but I must say, their chicken sandwich was good and packed with flavor.
This used to be one of my favorite local places, but sadly they’ve removed everything from the menu that used to make it special (and apparently ratcheted up the prices too). I hope you’ll bring the old menu back!
Get some actual soup containers, this is a complete mess Also bring back the pork and broccoli sandwich and the red cabbage. Everything started tasting worse when y’all started cutting costs.
Ordered the chicken bahn mi and it wasn’t good. The top bread was super stale and the bottom was soggy. The chicken was well seasoned but idk it just was not good we had to throw it out. It was kinda disappointing 😕
I was excited to try this place for the first time, so I ordered through the phone and walked 30+ minutes to pick up some congee. Upon arriving, I was told they ran out of congee and failed to fulfill my order. I was then charged for bubble tea that was sickly sweet and powdery. Not sure if I’ll come back again.
EDITED 9/27. Deeply disappointed to retract this endorsement. After lowering prices this spring, Maya raised prices at the end of the summer by nearly 50% on congee bowls. I used to go every week for lunch, and haven’t gone once since the change. $16-$17 for a weekday lunch just isn’t workable. So sad to lose this place and its delicious food. Original (May 2025) This isn’t really a grocery store - it is one of the most delicious, kindest, and most welcoming little restaurants you could happen upon in any neighborhood. The food is inspired, excellent, and affordable.
I don’t think they have a kitchen. Pretty tasteless sandwich. Lots of bread. Had to toss the bottom half- soggy. Not a traditional bahn mi by any stretch.
Very Americanized, hipster tasting congee. Congee lacks flavor so you’re given a ton of protein to make up for it. Weird that there’s broccoli in everything.
This is interpretational/health conscious-congee, please do not expect traditional congee. Congee mixed with quinoa(??), topped with broccoli, carrots, and pork..too many fixings, yet overall still lacked depth of flavor. Do not get me wrong, it was a pretty bowl and I do appreciate that there is a market within. I like the idea of a congee cafe, but this was unfortunately just not executed well enough to hit the mark.
I wish I could leave a review with no stars! I ordered a vanilla iced coffee with cream, very light. After seeing others that came after me ( who happened to be white) leave with their orders, I inquired about my order, it hadn’t been made. I had to reiterate my order only to be told they don’t have cream. I don’t drink milk but conceded to it because I was just ready to leave. When I asked did the coffee have vanilla, the barista looked at the cashier to confirm I paid for it, at that point I told them they could keep it and walked away. No one offered a refund or explanation for what I just encountered! Reprehensible behavior, the nerve to display a minority owned sign in the window.
Very dirty and messy place. It’s like they stopped trying. Unfriendly staff. If you’re trying to get authentic Vietnamese Banh Mi this is not the place. Their “Banh mi” are miles away from actual Banh mi. It’s more like a sub with random ingredients. Disappointing, misleading and who puts broccoli in Banh mi’s?
Ok I left the review as a placeholder to actually put a review later (which is this)—and I’m Vietnamese, not Chinese for the record. I went with a group a bit back and received bad customer service. And didn’t like the food—that’s it. It’s not about traditionalism or whatever something ought to be; it’s simply that I didn’t like the food or customer service. Simple as that. I don’t judge non-traditional food by its aberration from tradition—doing such would be a bit bigoted—but just by its taste. You can make fusion congee—and I’ve had good fusion congee before, like a congee pot pie at a LA restaurant—but this version is just bland and unappetizing. If you serve traditional congee and it’s bad, then I similarly won’t like it. No need to abstractize it to be about your cultural belonging and identity.
