We had breakfast there. It was really good (pancakes, american breakfast) and the staff was super friendly. We also ordered a milkshake, but first the machine wasn't working, so we got soft drinks instead. When we were about to leave they also managed to repair the milkeshake machine, so we got our milkshake on top. We had a nice stop and a good chat there. Big recommendation!
Ive been coming to franks since 2019. Honestly, this place is always my top recommendation for breakfast burritos in all of slo. The food is amazing. The staff are amazing. And who doesnt love the classic diner vibe? Orders come out almost as quickly as you order. They are really well organized and the place is always clean. Im pretty proud to be a customer of theirs. Hope you guys start selling shirts soon!
I'm not big on hotdogs. But everyone in town recommended so I had to try it. Hands down best I've had. Staff are so welcoming and fast service. It's dog heaven.
Oh!... This place is great! Delicious food all around! I had several options, including the BIG breakfast burrito, the kraut dog, salad, and hashbrowns. You get BIG portions. They have fresh and expensive ingredients. The food is seasoned perfect, and they made time to explain what was gluten free and why. Love this spot!
So ironically I'm not a hotdog fan, so i dont get those when I'm in SLO. but i do love a big juicy burger, hot square cut fries , tasty milkshakes. And, don't sleep on those breakfast sandwiches!! Franks has all that , and its fresh hot and relatively inexpensive .
Food is really good. Lots of choices.
Many ways to make hotdogs and Frank's knows them all. Very tasty. Good size portions. Noisy inside but a fun atmosphere. You order at the counter but food is delivered to your table.
Ordered dine-in, just a soda and the "basic" Frank's Dog: hot dog, slice of tomato, mustard, relish, and chopped onions. Absolutely delicious hot dog, would gladly eat one again! The service was also very fast, I barely had time to sit down before I was given my meal!
Best breakfast burritos around in San Luis and great salsa to go with it they made mine veggie Style, which wasn't even on the menu, and it was amazing. The service was great, too extremely friendly and happy and caring.
Amazing food all around. Breakfast burritos are delicious be sure to order no jalapenos if you dint like spicy food. Cant go wrong with anything on this menu. Definitely try the burgers. Chili cheese dog and jalapeno poppers..
This place is classic and timeless! Love the dogs and this place holds a special place for the in-laws. We enjoy stopping by Frank’s when we’re in town and craving a solid weenie!! Stop being FRANK about your love for hot dogs! 🍔🌭🥪🫔🍟🌭 📸 Kraut Dog @FranksFamousHotdogs Big weenies are better at Frank’s! 📍San Luis Obispo, CA 🌅
I was skeptical about the new ownership at first. I got the breakfast staple of a breakfast burrito & hash browns. I can only conclude that it was an"off day" for them. Since then the breakfast burritos have been huge, tasty and still under $10. I still love this place even after over a decade of eating there.
I absolutely love this place, the breakfast burritos are amazing. I don't know how you could give it a bad review. It's yours really great look prices are really reasonable and I think that these are the best breakfast burritos in all of San Luis County.
I've probably been to Frank's thirty times over the past four years. Frank's is where you go for food that you know you shouldn't be eating, but that tastes fantastic. Their burgers, sandwiches and fried foods are excellent, and if you get there early, their breakfast options are awesome. The staff is always very friendly, wait time for food is small. I've never had a bad time at Frank's.
Now I've had my share of Hot Dogs and Chili Dogs and this place takes the top spot. If your reading this to think about a place to eat while in town, stop reading and get over here to start reading the menu to order. This was top knotch. Awesome Dog and this was a small fry! Our little girl Cali dog was in the background sniffing away with all the great smells!!! Well be back! Loved it Franks!!
Always a favorite of mine. Super friendly staff. I recommend the breakfast burrito, no cheese, and have lots of their fresh salsa. Perfect food every time.
Frank’s Famous Hot Dogs is a true San Luis Obispo classic. I’ve been coming here since 1992, and it’s remained consistently awesome, affordable, and delicious. Their breakfast burritos are fantastic—loaded with fluffy eggs, crispy chewy bacon, and melty cheddar cheese. The salsa can be a bit spicy for me, so I usually ask for it on the side—still enjoy it, just in moderation! Their chicken strips and fries are to die for, especially with an Ortega chili on top—super yum. It’s an easy place to park, and they offer convenient delivery options. They’re open until 9 p.m., but delivery seems to cut off extra early—which is a bit of a bummer if you're craving something later in the evening. Frank’s is a great local business to support, and I hope they never change. A San Luis Obispo classic!
Hector and his helpful staff provided excellent quick service with a fabulous cheese dog and chicken burger with fries 🍟 Excellent value for money for this SLO established fast food restaurant.... give it a try
Great burger, dog, and chicken sandwich (which I ordered for the first time yesterday...so hard to resist the burger...and it was perfect). Shakes with Thrifty's ice cream! There are a dozen reasons this place is a SLO institution.
Oldtimer establishment with an incredible chorizo breakfast burrito. I'll be back for the hot dogs!
The owner, Frank, is there to greet customers & he adds a comforting charm to what others call fast food dining. The place is always clean & neat inside as well as outside in the 2 parking lots & patio area. The prices have increased but there is nothing lacking in service, quality & his food is very good tasting, like homemade!!, not basic. Stop in and give it a try, he has a good variety of traditional favorite foods.
I come to this place every now and then. It has a vibrant, retro atmosphere that I relish. The convenient location it is in is also a huge plus. I’ve had breakfast burritos at many fine establishments here in SLO, and I’ve found that the best tasting ones can be found here. They are a bit pricy for a reason. The coffee is quite delectable as well. Highly recommend this place
I’ve been going here for years. The perfect pit stop on my way up or down the 101. Service is great and all the food is delicious here. And those hot dogs are THE best. They also have outdoor seating for those traveling with dogs.
The food was great, the atmosphere was retro and very welcoming. The waitress was helpful and patient while I decided what to get for the small army of people I brought with me. All 15 people really enjoyed our food and were pleased with how fast it arrived. I recommend the breakfast burrito with the salsa. The burrito is a little pricey at 10$ but it is definitely worth it
This place had such delicious food. My husband had the monster burger and it was huge! He loves burgers and was very pleased with his. We shared an order of chili cheese fries and their big so there was plenty for both of us. I had a hot dog with blu cheese crumbles, tomatoes and bacon. They are not stingy with their bacon. I will be returning again.
Hands down Frank's hot dogs is the best place in SLO for a cheap meal. The bacon chili dog with a side of chili frys and a drink is my go to order. Be warned avoid going at lunchtime during the week because the highschool kids will overrun the place. Always a good meal with a casual and fun atmosphere. Grab a t-shirt and wear it letting the world know that "big weenies are better".
This was are first time here service was quick and I hey brought it to your table wasn't expecting that Food was good I had a chill dog and they were not shy with the chill I like how they put the cheese 🧀 first then the chill it melts better that way we would eat here again and recommend it if you are in SLO My husband had the mushroom Swiss burger and we got fries 🍟 they we're seasoned fries
Great and inexpensive hot dog spot. Hits the spot. Has old timey hot dog flavor. Portions are not too small and not too big. The chili dog was drenched in chili, too much for me but my wife loved it. Size of kids burger seemed fine to me. Will be back.
Frank's Famous Hot Dogs is a great place to go to when want a quick bite to eat. Just be warned they are busy during school days lunch time with how close the high school is.
We travel a few hours to eat here. Consistently the best hot dogs and chili cheese dogs. The onion rings are killer too. My husband and I prefer the boiled hot dogs. The Belgian waffle is probably the best I’ve ever had - crispy and soft. The hash browns are crispy, seasoned, and perfect. The people with low stars don’t seem to appreciate what this place is about. Hector the manager is always helpful and professional. He’s a solid guy. Could not recommend this place more. We’ll be happy to make the trip back.
WHAT! This place makes “the best” green chili verde burrito! Big chunks of tender flavorful pork, seasoned with a wonderful spiced chili verde sauce, egg, onions, peppers! Big enough to share, but I was going to share this big burrito but I saved 1/2 for my lunch the next day, happy I decided not to share! Maybe next time or not!
Was a good lunch place on a Monday Was busy but they were still fast. The burger was HUGH and thick patty and bacon I really did not like the onion rings is the reason i gave a 4 star. the bathrooms need a little more attention too. the staff he was great cashier the server was ok. little confuse trying to find people
Great food in a very nostalgic red and white booth environment that is reminiscent of the classic American diner. They don’t sell combo meals here so you must order everything individually. A lunch with a hot dog, fries, and drink will set you back $18-$20+ a tip. I indulge here occasionally as it is a very peaceful atmosphere to dine in away from the office during a busy work day.
Been coming here for ten plus years . Still very good. Try the LA style Dog . Wish the bun was bigger and more sturdy but the dogs got all kinds of stuff on it so it’s gonna be messy. Just use a fork and you are good.
Great friendly service, they are pretty "old school" in that they get to know their regular customers. Great *filling* (read: huge) breakfast options, don't miss the breakfast burritos with the chunky salsa & extra bacon. Lunch/dinner fare include hamburgers, pastrami, corn dogs... with a good variety of sides & shakes. They are the best/closest option for local high school students, so be prepared to wait at lunch time. My only complaint is that the cooks are occasionally found smoking in the parking lot which leaves them less-than-focused and they frequently miss special requests like "well done" on burgers or "cheese allergy" in burritos. Definitely the best "faster food" in SLO.
I'm a breakfast burrito afficianado and, Imo this place has the best breakfast burritos in the area. Chunky potatoes, eggs and big pieces of bacon topped off with a spicy kick. Otherwise, it's a hot dog stand so not sure about the rest. I mean, really, what the heck is a hot dog made of anyway?? Lips and a$$holes. 🤢
I like their polish dogs; nice and crisp. That's really the only thing I've gotten there. The fries are great and the staff is really nice. They usually even offer me some ranch to go with my fries, and some other restaura ts arou d you have to pay extra to get some ranch with your fries. I know they also have good breakfast burritos because I have friends that rave about them, but I just haven't tried them yet.
Giving a 4 star rating. Ordering fried Appetizers, ensure that they aee.fully cooked. Unfortunately experience with Fried Zucchini (the batter slides off, then an closer look, the battery was golden crusty on the outside, but too moistened mushy on the inside. The best dog I ever had. Every Hot Dog is 9". I appreciate the Veterans Discount. I gave the tip to replace discount.
Dogs were all tasty really liked the franks dog in middle the Pic little heavy on the mayo and mustard but I would not have it any other way. Have not eaten the polish yet but looks and smells delicious bottom in Pic and La dog was very tasty also heavy on sauce but still delicious just mess to eat.
The staff were nice and the hot dogs were good. They served us even though they were about to close. The inside of the restaurant has a great atmosphere and looks like an old fashioned diner. I'm giving 4 stars only because the chili was very thin and a little too watery. Everything else was great 🌭
I did not attend SLO but my Dad did. His name is Frank and we come here any chance we can. The staff was incredibly welcoming and friendly. My partner and I ordered a chili dog to share and they cut it in half for us and put the two halves on separate trays for us to eat individually. Very thoughtful from the nice lady working there. I have never had a bad experience here and it it’s very nostalgic and almost traditional for us to stop by.
Wish they had a larger breakfast menu, and that breakfast was longer. But it's a decent place to get a quick burger or hotdog.
When you come here from a long day of school and your starving its great. Prices were a little overpriced but the food was very decent. My freind disliked the hot dogs which was suprising because of the whole marketing being around hot dogs. i got the bacon burger and it was delicous. However i would recommend getting the high school special you get a main meal (from a specific selection) fries, and a drink for only 12 bucks
I stopped at Frank's to have a quick lunch and was very satisfied. The restaurant has a classic American food vibe. The service was excellent and very friendly. The manager who's name I forgot was a great guy, and so were the rest of the staff. I'll be going back to try a hot dog or burger.
Worlds largest breakfast burrito. I was thinking of grabbing this and eating it while I drive down the coast... my mistake, this guy needs two hands! It was amazing, I could have been full with half as much and it's not cheap, $11.50 with taxes but you will not be hungry all day. Be sure to grab some extra pico from the condiment area... so good!
Extensive hot dog menu & reasonable prices. Excellent dogs & fries. Have not had any burgers or breakfast items. Ordering is quick, but there typically is a wait til you get your food. Dining area is kept clean. Has it's own two parking lots. Handicapped accessible out & in.
I used to love this place but today, I got a corn dog that was totally burnt, a hot dog that was also cooked to death, and a whole lot less good toppings that used to be on the hot dog. Less of everything. I like my hot dog grilled, but not until it's burnt! And $5.00 for fries? I passed on fries and drinks because of the crazy prices. No small drink was listed anywhere.
You go here because it's an institution, not necessarily because they're dogs are extraordinary. They're good, some menu items might be great, but overall this joint is a perfect solution to quell some hunger in a pinch or for a serving of nostalgia. LA street dog was my favorite.
I have tried Chicago style hotdog. I was not impressed, simple, small hotdog inside a plain bun with some random condiments, relish etc., and a very thin, like pencil, slice of pickle. Portion was small, good only for a few bites, not worth $12+. Overall this "specialty" hotdog was a disappointment, no wonder the place was empty.
I’ve heard a lot about this place and finally had the opportunity to give it a try. I’m hoping my experience was a one time thing, so I may give it another try. The best thing about my visit was the mozzarella sticks which were brought to us after the rest of our food because they were still cooking. The bacon dog I got was cold as was the bun it came in. My wife enjoyed her mushroom chicken sandwich. The fries were good, but got cold fast. I’m giving 3 stars instead of 2 because of the mozzarella sticks and the fact my wife liked her mushroom chicken sandwich.
Meh. I ordered the Chicago Dog…it was COVERED in celery salt so much that I had to wipe it off with a napkin, what a mess. Bun to dog ratio wasn’t good, they claim big weenies are best, but looks like size didn’t matter that much! The fries are like freezer bag French fries that taste just like hospital or school fries. Service was good, fun atmosphere and nice employees.
Tried this place out and got a chili dog and jalapeno poppers. I love the way they prepare their chili dogs, I just wish mine didn't come out cold. I'm sure it would have tasted great warmed up. They advertise home made or freshly made jalapeño poppers. They tasted terrible. They were loaded with cream cheese, and I may as well have just eaten plain cream cheese.
We used to enjoy coming to Franks but today's visit not so much, we couldn't carry on a conversation as the staff kept yelling "corndog" and by yelling I mean YELLING as loud as they could. Then there was the really loud clap, no reason just one clap every few minutes. The price was a bit high in my opinion as well but a krout dog, Polish dog, corndog 2 fries, 3 drinks 55.00? Ok well I think in the future we will go elsewhere, it was nice when we used to come here but I think we are done. After reading other reviews it would appear that these are a common PROBLEM at Franks, and then the responses have the feel of like this is your (the customers) fault, we are just having fun so get over it. Franks used to be a great place to take the family, now it is being run into the ground. So long Franks, we miss the old Franks, but we wont miss the current franks.
Having a hard time with the quality of the food given it was $11.69 for a chili cheese dog (no fries or drink) with a distinct lack of flavor. The bun doesn’t have nearly enough structural integrity. The ingredients in general come off as cheap. If the dog was half the price, I’d understand. But for walk up counter and those prices, I expect more quality ingredients and preparation.
We had not been there since COVID. And it was our favorite hot dog place. So today 8/7/24 we went. We got a corn dog and a grilled BBQ dog. Did not check it until we got home. The corn dog was burned to hell and the dog inside was tough. The bbq dog was rubbery as well. Time for us to find a better dog place! We spent $18. I/we will NOT be going back.
Very pricey! I had hash-browns, gravy and 1 egg with toast. Paid 11.95!!! What the hell I’m traveling and on a budget thought I would save money the guy rude and not I even helpful as sometimes places would say what is more affordable to order, in top of that They serve frozen hash browns, I thought they would have homemade fresh hash browns and that’s why so much money! I wouldn’t recommend or even come back! Unless u like frozen food go for it!! This was my meal before I even touched it! I would like my money back!!
this place has to be a front or something. how do you justify a $10 dog that is worse than a costco’s and a $12.50 burger that has more ketchup than meat? the people working there are nice, but everything else about this place (food, value, ambiance) is a travesty. skip!
Doordashed. Had soggy onion rings and every dog was cold. Any cheese wasn't melted. I realize it was delivered and there's some quality lost, but I don't think being at the restaurant would've made the difference.
I don't usually post but my husband brought me chicken strips. These strips are burned, really crunchy and the ranch has no flavor. So disappointing. As I said in my review, my husband brought the food to me. He did not open the bag until he brought it to me. We live in Atascadero. If I was at the actual restaurant, I would have went back in.I am sorry this is not a great review, I wanted the owner to be aware.
This has been our go to for about a decade. We stopped by about a week ago and we're very disappointed. We ordered kids mini burgers like always, and we where blown away at the size of the patties. Honestly they didn't fill out half of the bun and where literally about the size of a silver dollar. Even worse, we ordered a BLT and it had honestly only two pieces of bacon! Two!? It was definitely a shock to us and we aren't ones to complain about our food. Sadly we just won't support them any longer.
We were really excited and had high hopes for this place but we definitely weren’t impressed. Even my boys who will eat just about ANYTHING weren’t too thrilled. We placed a to go order, and after traveling all day we were pretty hungry, but none of us ended up even finishing our food. The meat on the burger was extremely dry and the cheese was rubbery. The deep fried hot dogs weren’t deep fried at all, and my moms hot dog had the weirdest grayish green hue to it that we began debating if it was even okay to eat. The fried zucchini and mozerella sticks were pretty sad, and we didn’t end up with a single napkin, ranch, ketchup packet or anything else for our huge order. Maybe it’s better if you eat in? Not to happy that we just spent $99 dollars for food that sucked. On the bright side the breakfast burrito was big and okayish.
Absolutely ABSURD to charge $9.95 for a hot dog with bbq sauce on it. No drink, no fries, just a bun, hot dog and bbq sauce. Even with the onions and tomatoes that come standard it should not cost $10 for a hot dog. I have no idea how they feel okay charging that much for a very mediocre hot dog. Especially when a kids meal is $8.99 for the same hot dog fries and a drink. Will not be returning. Don't bother going here unless you want to spend $50 for a family of 4 to eat subpar hot dogs.
$18.00 for a polish sausage dog w/sour kraut! It was disgusting! I don't know what kind of meat it was but I've never had it b4. Very greasy right along with the over greasy fries. I won't be back there again. Scarey!
This worst food experience of my life , the chili dog get 1 star the burger and fries get a 2 store , you guys need shut down rename remodel new manager new recipe new menu , new everything
Over priced for garbage food. The pastrami was seemingly sopped with hos dog grease. The container is came in had a puddle of this grease at the bottom which tasted nothing like pastrami. Tasted like hotdogs grease. I understand it is a dog joint but I expected my pastrami sa dwich to taste like pastrami sandwich. Also wish they had marinara for their cheesesticks. Unpleasant experience and set me back $27 for a sandwich and cheesesticks.
NOT SAFE PLACE FOR KIDS. I'm from out of town. Only in SLO once a month or so. Used to have fond memories of this place. Now three times in a row this fella has been in the parking lot and wandering around the tables yelling profanities, demanding money and being a public nuisance. Franks won't have him trespassed for some reason.
Stood there for 5 minutes and no service. They play music so loud they can't hear anyone come in. Thought I'd give it a try but went elsewhere with my kids
Hamburger, please. Hold the chunk of hair... I have been going to Frank Dog for the past 20+ years and it is what you would expect from a small college town: good food, priced well and in an old building. Today I met my family there for lunch and my oldest child (who is a little OCD about eating out), pulled a big chuck of hair out of his mouth after taking a bite from his hamburger. Not only did it ruin a $50 family lunch, but there is no way my son is going to eat at places like this again. I took the chunk of hair and showed it to the manager. I didn't ask for a refund as that would not have improved the situation, or for store credit because I will not be eating there anymore. None of their employees were wearing gloves or hairnets so I can see how it could easily happen. We won't be visiting this place again. Just gross.....
I got a hot dog because it's in the restaurant name. It was probably the worst I've ever had. The service was very fast at least. But the hot dog really was very unpleasant: too dry despite seeming to have been boiled, not great in taste, damp and crushed bun despite not having sat around, not very tasty meat mixture.
Went here as the place looked quaint and was looking forward to a nice meal. I ordered the Chicago hotdog and was really disappointed, there was no and I mean no flavour to the hotdog, it was bland, bland, bland it was grey in colour as it had been sitting in water for days. I sent it back and asked if they could do a fresh one and they grilled it and the bun and I swear it was even worse, still no flavour what so ever, the fries must sit under a lamp as they weren't really hot and the food came out very quickly, so that's why I assume the fries must be under a lamp because if they were fried fresh they would have been piping hot. I asked for a refund and I got it but, I was also reprimanded as I was told no one has ever complained 🤷. I was taken aback by that comment. I won't go there again.
Frank's used to be one of our favorite places to go they changed their hot dog brand and it's nasty and the strawberry shake that I had I might try it again if I was starving and it was the only place available it is unlikely sorry!!!
What a HUGE disappointment. $16 for a chilli dog, fries and a cup of water. The chilli dog was a sorry looking little gray sausage and a soggy bun floating in a pool of chilli and beans (with tomatoes) that had very little flavor. Apparently they are unaware that hot dog chilli is different than just chilli and beans you pour into a bowl. The fries were undercooked and the ketchup is clearly some cheap off-brand. The water was good and cold though. The service staff spent part of the time yelling at each other in the kitchen or behind the counter making it hard to actually hold a conversation. If Franks is famous for their hotdogs, maybe their reputation was made many years ago.
Idk why everyone likes this place so much. We got a corn dog and onion rings. Onion rings were undercooked, and the corn dog wasn't horrible, but you're going to charge me $4 for a frozen corn dog? I can get a fresh one dipped in homemade batter at Sylvester's for less than $4. Y'all rude for doing the people of SLO dirty like this.
The worst place I’ve been to in years . If you want a bowl of chili on your hotdog this is the place for you . No flavor at all . The guy at the register …maybe the owner …I’m not sure , he was so rude . I let you know you are not going to treat me rude ! So learn some customer service skills . Kindness goes a long way man . The price of this food was unbelievable just high ! The hotdog was disgusting. I would not recommend. I will say one positive thing the ham and cheese sandwich was good . But the hotdogs he ordered yuck .
