This was our second visit, and once again, it was a fantastic experience. We enjoyed starting the evening with a drink in the pub side, which has a great selection of drinks. The service on both visits was attentive and friendly, adding to the overall welcoming atmosphere. The food was truly excellent—refined, well-balanced, and anything but ordinary. A standout dish this time was their special celebration dish featuring Boudin Blanc, which was delightfully flavorful and expertly prepared. The selection of wines is also excellent. Overall, two wonderful nights at this restaurant, and we’ll definitely be returning. If I had one suggestion, white tablecloths would add a touch of elegance and help soften the noise, creating an even more perfect dining experience. Highly recommended!

Galvin Green Man in Chelmsford is a cozy pub set in a charming old building with warm, inviting lighting. The place is clean and well maintained, creating a relaxed atmosphere. The menu offers classic British dishes with a modern touch. The haddock was one of the best I have had in London. The staff is friendly and attentive, making sure guests feel welcome. Prices reflect the quality and care in the food. The bathrooms are clean and well kept. Overall, it’s a great spot for a quality meal in a comfortable setting.

I only have good things to say about the Galvin Green Man. I orginally reviewed this restaurant as quite average having been left disappointed after an anniversary meal. The staff reached out to me to apologise and invited me to try their food again. My wife and I went today for a Sunday roast. The food was immaculate, very tasty and cooked perfectly. Both my wife and I had the beef and chicken duo and can recommend it to anybody visiting. Staff were attentive and did a great job of making sure everything was okay without being too intrusive. One of the best roasts ive had locally.

I was there for a trustee meeting with lunch. We sat in one of the rooms upstairs, which although small, we had enough room to sit around a boardroom sized table (12). The food and wine was very good with reasonable portion size. I had seabass, which was cooked to perfection. Service was personable and attentive.

Last week, I went out for drinks with a friend, but ended up having an absolutely amazing dinner. The food was incredible, and the service was just top-notch. I'm so glad I decided to stick around for dinner because it was such a great experience. The atmosphere was perfect, and the staff made us feel so welcome. Definitely a night to remember!

What a lovely restaurant, setting and decor. The food was very tasty. I loved the Artichoke soup excellent. I wasn’t happy that the chicken l ordered had no traditional veg, which l mistakingly expected, needed to order seperate. My husband ordered fish and lentils, Unfortunately he got. home after 40min journey, and it gave him an upset tummy. Service was good.

January 25, 2025, I attended the Burns Night celebration at Galvin Green Man, a historic pub and restaurant near Chelmsford, Essex. The evening was a delightful blend of Scottish tradition and culinary excellence. The event featured a four-course menu priced at £48 per person, accompanied by Scottish bagpipes and the traditional haggis ceremony. The dishes were thoughtfully prepared, reflecting the restaurant's commitment to seasonal and local ingredients. The ambiance was enhanced by the historic setting of the pub, which dates back to 1341, providing a cozy and authentic atmosphere. The staff were attentive and knowledgeable, contributing to a memorable experience. While the food was exceptional, the overall experience of the Burns Night celebration at Galvin Green Man was truly enjoyable, offering a perfect blend of tradition, atmosphere, and high-quality cuisine.

I went here for the 1st time on a Monday afternoon and was pleasantly surprised by how beautiful the place is, cozy pub area & outside has great views. The lunch menu was good and extremely reasonable prices. The food was cooked to perfection and again to my surprise very well seasoned, no need to add salt or pepper. Tom who served us is professional but super friendly and only had to tell him our drink order once which I appreciated. He also was quick to ask us if we had any allergies which I do so was impressed by that. I’m definitely going to make this one of my places & am going to bring my dog next time. It’s definitely worth a visit if you’re looking to eat well in a nice relaxing environment.

Had an incredible roast today with excellent service. I had the Imam Bayaldi [roasted eggplant with cumin yoghurt]. Husband had the Torched Fillet of mackerel. Absolutely delicious. For mains I had the roast sirloin and my husband had the porchetta. Service excellent. Highly recommend this spot.

Great warm and friendly from the moment you step inside. My wife and I were greeted by all colleagues we interacted with. Our server Ellie/Erin (apologies) was lovely and went out of her way to ask a question of the chef on the size of the sharing chateaubriand steak. Lovely fresh food, prepared amazingly well. Definitely will be returning again and again!

The staff from greeting to leaving was great, attentive without being annoying and very friendly. A special mention for the ahem older gentleman who met us, Emily our server and the lovely young man who brought out food out. There was a slight mix up with the order but he was so apologetic and remedied it straight away! The food was lovely, great portions but beat us! We were kindly given dessert to take away which was a lovely touch. All in all a lovely visit and I’d recommend visiting Galvin Green Man!

Beautiful family meal on Sunday for two birthdays. Would love to see the local distillery Essex Spirits stocked as well as Chelmsford's leading brewery, Radio City. Exceptional customer service too. Thank you.

Such a hidden gem! Came for dinner and it exceeded all expectations. The staff are super attentive and helpful, and the food is possibly the nicest I’ve had in a long time. The sea bass was cooked to perfection and the portion sizes were just right - not too overwhelmingly big. Can’t wait to come back!

We haven’t had the roast before at Galvin and it didn’t disappoint. The roast beef was amazing along with everything. Do yourself a favour and order the cauliflower cheese it’s so good

The historic ambience, dating back to 1341, created a charming and inviting atmosphere. We began our meal with a glass of Galvin Champagne, which was well-balanced, fresh, and lively, offering delightful aromas of pear, greengage, and citrus fruit. For the main course, we savoured a perfectly cooked sirloin steak, accompanied by crispy chips and honeyed chantenay carrots. Following this, we delighted in a selection of farmhouse cheeses paired with seeded rye crackers and house chutney. The service was impeccable—attentive and friendly, making us feel genuinely welcome. I highly recommend Galvin Green Man for a memorable dining experience!

Absolutely lovely restaurant. Went yesterday for my partner's 25th birthday, and we had a wonderful time. Staff was very friendly, food was delicious and the atmosphere was delightful. As a hospitality worker herself, she couldn't find a fault, and only had high remarks! We highly recommend and will be coming again 😊

Fantastic lunch with great service. Good reasonable selection of wines plus great Bib Gourmand offer, though we had the normal menu. We had booked the terrace but they contacted us a few days before to move us indoors because of the typical British weather! I can see why it has its reputation! And yes, we did have THREE deserts!! 😀

Went for the wife's birthday last week, we had booked via the website but when we got there we were told there was not a table booked in our name, it turns out we had been lead onto a different place on line and booked a pub in Harlow !! The staff were superb and fitted us in to a dining area at the end of the bar which was brilliant, there were 8 of us. From start to finish the service, food and drinks were excellent. We will definitely be back. Thank you.

Is this the best Fish and Chips I've ever had?.. quiet possibly. As a self proclaimed foodie this is top level standards. Batter is light and tasty not greasy. Fish flaked and fell apart, you could taste how fresh it was. Plus the mushy peas were made fresh. 10/10 would come back

Outstanding to say the least! We were greeted with a glass of champagne which went down a treat. For starters we enjoyed the duck liver parfait & ham & chicken terrine, followed by the best steak we’ve ever eaten - the chateaubriand is a choice you won’t regret! Delicious, tender, tasty & quite easily one of the best dishes. Desserts saw us take on the lemon meringue tart and burnt basque cheesecake - both exceptional. If you need a reason to visit, the chateaubriand is worth it alone!

We were lucky to get a Valentine’s Day booking at Galvin Green Man; the food was great, the service amazing and personalised (thanks Emma!) and even though we were seated in the pub, the atmosphere was wonderful and the table was spacious. As a vegan, I was apprehensive about the set menu, but I was reassured on the phone before our booking that there would be options. On the day, I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food, each menu item was delicious and both my non-vegan boyfriend and I agreed that the mushroom risotto was the best we both had ever had. Overall, I would highly recommended Galvin for both those who have dietary requirements and those who are happy to have anything on the menu. The portion sizes were generous, the quality of the food was high and the service was fantastic.

I took my wife here for dinner knowing what was on the menu and being part of the Galvin estate I had an expectation, We were not disappointed. We both had the Duck liver parfait, and amazing balance of flavour and the bread was perfect. We opted for the Chateau Briand, we were lost for words, tender, moist, we both felt it was the best we've ever had. To finish, I had the chocolate moose with passion fruit sorbet, perfect, the balance was perfect and not sweet. My wife had the sticky Toffee pudding and she loved it, again, not too sweet and the spong was lovely and light. We both left feeling stuffed. Glad we chose to eat here and the service was attentive.

From the minute we arrived until we paid the bill & left the customer service was 2nd to none. Made us feel very welcome & special throughout the meal & they dealt with a minor issue very professionally & politely. We had starters of cauliflower soup & whipped goats cheese, followed by nut roast Sunday lunch and finished off with chocolate cheesecake & custard tart. Only remembered to do pictures at the end but still highly recommend regardless. Great selection of non alcoholic drinks too which was a big plus for my husband. We will be back for sure and thanks for making our visit so nice. Jane

The food and service were outstanding. I was honestly impressed from the moment we walked though the door to the moment we left. Every member of staff was friendly and greeted us with a smile. Even the younger members of staff were extremely knowledgeable about the food and beverage menus. The food was perfect, extremely well cooked and seasoned with a perfect balance of flavours on every dish. We will certainly be returning.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️6 Stars upgrade From the minute you walk in to the minute you .leave this is quality. The venue itself has strong style and architecture combined with a lot of glass and light. Immediately warm and relaxing. The staff are very professional and polite with a human side. The food is, well, fantastic. Portion sizes of the food are spot on and the sauces are sparse and light which demonstrates you don't need loads of sauce to compliment perfectly cooked food with delicate and subtle flavours. Be warned this is an expensive place to eat and drink. But so worth it. I don't get over to Essex much - I will be going back. Highly recommended.

Wow. We came here for my birthday lunch today and it was truly amazing. The food was out of this world, every element had been thought about and executed perfectly. But the service really was the cherry on top. Our wonderful waitress (I think her name was Lauren) was so welcoming, knowledgable and friendly. Everyone who came to our table wished me a Happy Birthday and although it may sounds silly, that really made my day. As someone who has trained in catering and hospitality I can really appreciate all the attention to detail and cannot wait to come here again.

Had not visited before however wouldn’t hesitate to return. Focaccia was really light with some beautiful balsamic vinegar to dip into. OH and I had the chateaubriand, dauphinois potatoes, broccoli and side of honeyed chantanay carrots. The steak was the most tender well cooked piece of beef that we’ve both had for a long time. Our compliments to the chef. Hubby had treacle tart & chantilly cream and I had crème brûlée with wine poached pear. Gorgeous bottle of Rioja accompanied dinner and good strong coffee to finish a great meal. Service was on point, not intrusive.

Wow is all I can say! 4th time visiting this restaurant and I absolutely love it, it never disappoints! The scotch egg is the greatest dish ever created by man, it is simply divine 😍 Food is very well presented and the ingredients carefully and very well chosen. The staff are all lovely and all very good at their jobs. Thank you to everybody involved, we had a fabulous night!

Lovely food, great service and they gave us a private room to accommodate us. Can't fault their service. A thoroughly enjoyable meal. I had the halibut for main, friends had the Chateaubriand. Compliments to the chef!

Incredible! Amazing food, menu and drinks! I would highly recommend and I can’t wait to go back. We went on Sunday and got the 2 course menu -for appetiser: smoked salmon and scotch egg, the pork and beef roast dinner with cheesy cauliflower on the side and in lieu of dessert we got an espresso martini which was incredible! Beautiful interiors with a huge outdoor dining space available too. I can’t wait to go back, I have recommended it to so many people already! Great service!

Excellent food in a wonderful setting. Maybe a tad too hot inside, but everything else was faultless.

Second visit here and the food and service remain exceptional. The first Sunday roast out since lockdown had to feel special and the Green Man did not disappoint. The beef was cooked to perfection as were the roasties, the veg and Yorkshire pudding. The attempt to keep COVID-19 secure is well respected and guests are well spread out across the restaurant with waiting staff trying their best under really difficult circumstances for restaurants, we feel for you guys. The desserts were excellent again, the creme brûlée was super creamy with just the right wobble. I know I’ve mentioned this but the service throughout was super friendly. Great work Galvin, this is a real gem of a place and is only 10 minutes drive from my dad’s. Who said there were no good restaurants in Essex?

One of the best meals we've had, odd atmosphere in the bar created by staff. One guy visibly bored and kept telling other staff he was bored, not the most professional. Would love to return to try the restaurant side. Dog menu a great idea however slightly misleading

Went for Friday Birthday lunch. Got a lovely card from owners. We were sitting inside but asked to move onto the terrace as such a beautiful day. It was no problem for waiting staff, so polite and helpful. The food was absolutely delicious. My veg dish was one of the best dishes I have had, sweet potatoes, carrots with pesto and the sauces were amazing flavours. Great service, great good, perfect lunch time birthday. Thank you, we will be back.

Came here for the first time for a roast dinner, really enjoyed the food and service and the pub itself is lovely. Food was great, loved the scotch egg and the roast dinner was great too. You’ll prob need to ask for extra gravy so do that early! Will be coming back!

G

The starters were very good, the duck (though it was the thinnest piece I've ever seen) was tasty, and the Scot Egg was also very nice. The main course was a bit disappointing, both of our dishes were under seasoned, cooked well but very bland. The desserts and cheese board were very good. It was a quiet night, so there wasn't much atmosphere. The waitress was attentive, but the main course was a letdown. I'm not sure I would pay £160 including 12.5% service charge, and return again.

Came here on a rainy December Wednesday for a fat lunch. It’s a lovely place, the welcome was friendly as was a waitress who looked after us throughout the meal. The food was good, starters yes would have them again the artichoke soup absolutely delicious and the same for the salmon. We both had the Suffolk chicken for the main course, and for the main part it was lovely. It’s just that all it was was too very small slivers of chicken fillet, four mouthfuls and you’re done. Which unfortunately is what you get when an establishment starts throwing around that they have received a Michelin award of some kind. For that reason, the food is four star not five.

C
Coffee Lover

I had the rib eye steak cooked medium, and the food overall was nice. The steak was flavorful and cooked as requested. However, it came with fries that were left sitting in the sauce, which made them soggy—definitely a letdown. I’d say the fries were quite poor because of that. I also tried the garlic with focaccia bread, and unfortunately, that wasn’t nice at all—bland and disappointing. On a positive note, the service was lovely. The waitress was nice and friendly, which added a pleasant touch to the experience.

We had a fantastic dinner for our anniversary here. The food was simple but beautifully cooked, we had the chateaubriand for our main to share which was absolutely amazing!! The staff were very warm and welcoming too and overall we had a wonderful evening here, we will definitely be back!

Lovely atmosphere and great food. The outside space is perfect for a sunny day. Dishes are well prepared and generous. Lovely staff apart from the beaded guy who welcomed us and was fairly rude when explaining there was no option of sitting outside, which was fine but could be said in a much nicer and friendlier way.

B

This was a lovely place to go and eat however the food was a little underwhelming. What we had was nice but only just that. It didn’t blow us away. Steak wasn’t cooked the best either food wasn’t overly hot. Very expensive and can get equal quality of food at other local restaurant for a lot less money. Service was top notch h and we was very well looked after. A meal we enjoyed but won’t be returning.

k

Beautiful setting and very nice interior. But.... We got to the venue an hour or so before our table so we could have a couple of drinks in the pub side. Lovely atmosphere but ordering at the bar and waiting 15 mins was pretty poor. And then my dark and stormy arrived made with ginger ale, not ginger beer and completely tasteless. Each of the next two rounds took about 10 mins to get a waiter/waitress attention and 10 mins for the drinks. Shame as that's put us off going there just for drinks. As far as the meal was concerned, the starter and my wife's main were very good but I was somewhat surprised and disappointed to see a very small piece of halibut and even more so with the number of bones in such a small piece. My wife went for the chocolate fondant and asked if it came with ice cream. She was told no so ordered some to go on the side, yet in fact it came with pistachio ice cream! I guess the waitress was confused like us with the menu just saying pistachio, not pistachio ice cream. The waiting staff seemed pleasant enough but not overly attentive. All in all, for little less than a meal in Smiths it didn't really compare sadly.

L
Lisa RHODEN

I have scored low due to nearly an hour between starters and main meal, which we were ok with as out for the night, however after dessert at the end we were made to feel extremely awkward by a waitress who obviously wanted us to leave so they can clear up. Instead of politely asking us she began taking away our napkins and was quite rude. 2 members of the party had skate which came out Luke warm. However the other 2 members of the party said it was one of the best steaks they have eaten.

B
Bob Goon

Must say food and environment is good but the last part of our dining wasnt pleasant faced with a rude staff who just ditch us the bill rudely and whole time having angry face. Gave us an impression that had internal arguement but should not bring it upon customers. We travel almost 1 hour for this restaurant and its really not nice experience at all. To be fair just 1 staff the rest was nice but it did affect my day greatly to be treated in such rude manner towards the end of dinner.

L
Leigh Art Fair

Unfortunately we had been put on a table to be almost forgotten about, our order was taken for food and drinks, the bread hadn’t been given to us, but we saw a table that arrived after us receive theirs while looking at the menus still. So we had to request this while our starters had arrived. While which we were given two random pots of gravy with scotch eggs, very confusing. Our roast dinner came which really didn’t meet our expectation for the price and reputation of the restaurant which we heard great things about. Our roast potato's were basically boiled, carrots were very hard and not ‘honey roasted’ the cauliflower cheese was great. My chicken wasn’t what I paid £44 for it to be, the beef was lovely but gravy was very watery. Nobody came over to ask how our meal was or if we needed anything extra. What really made the evening for us go downhill was sitting there waiting for a waiter/waitress to take our plates and ask for the bill. It never happened, 20 minutes went by after we finished to have to ask for this. The service just wasn’t at all on top enough to warrant the price mark you have put on this place. Overall we were just very disappointed having been so excited all week to eat out in your establishment.
