Got take out because of the new norm and it was easy and ready when they said it would be. As for the food, it didn't disappoint in taste or portion size. Glad to have them in the neighborhood and I look forward to ordering there again.

Excellent quality German food with friendly attentive service. There aren't many places that serve steak tartar- it was outstanding

Very cool people, my partner and I love going there! Very tasty food, not expensive, large portions, a lot of variety of drinks and meals. Live music

Best and most authentic Wiener schnitzel in all of Chicagoland. So delicious. The obadtze and pretzel bread are also great. Servers are lovely and the vibe is great - there is often a live band playing!

My wife and I visited Himmel's for the first time recently and really enjoyed the experience. The food is great and the owners and our waitress Sarah were so kind and welcoming. The beer selection isn't large, but honestly, sometimes we prefer that, especially with a good selection of authentic German beers and some others on tap. I can see a lot of people being regulars here. We will definitely be coming back when we're in the area again.

The last time I had really good German food was when I was in Ohio. I have to say Himmel’s was spot on. The food was super fresh and well worth the wait. I will recommend the pizza rustica and the champignon rahm schnitzel! And the waiter we had recommended dishes and was very friendly to my friend and I! I will defiantly be coming back again. And on the weekend they have fresh pretzel bread for customers and live music!

Pizza was damn delicious ... brick oven style. Yes, pizza place while a German restaurant. Lovely live music in this German gem. Great service. German decor and ambiance. Staff really connect and work well with each other. I recommend this restaurant.

Everything here was excellent. The authentic German decor and atmosphere was great. Live music was perfect with the selection just loud enough but perfect for conversation. German food was excellent and large portions. The Wurst Platter had excellent kassler chop that was very tender, brat, spaetzle and sauerkraut superb. My husband had the Weiner Schnitzel which was as good as the best restaurants in Germany. My girlfriend had the Sauerbraten, which she loved and the red cabbage which was super. We highly recommend this restaurant.

Omg this place is so good!!! the staffs are very friendly and attentive. It was my first time there so I ordered the 2 things I really wanted to try: pizza and pork shank. the pizza is thin crust and cripy but gooey with cheese. sauce is flavorful and just the right amount. if you are eating alone it's the perfect portion. if you are sharing it's just enough so everyone can try it and something else on the menu. the pork shank, if you have not tried it, you must try it! it's absolutely tender on the inside and crispy on the outside. the best part—it peels right off the bone!!!! I was expecting a bit struggle but no, it was so easy to peel off, plus, if you ever watch anime, and see those big piece of meat chunks 🍖 yeas this will make you feel like you checked an item off your bucket list lol it comes with pickled cabbage which was really refreshing paired with mushroom gravy and dumplings, which is small round shaped and has a yam texture to it. it's really good. eating both definitely is a bit much for 1 person, maybe I'm just getting old 😂 they also have a mother's day buffet. just a wonderful establishment through and out.

Been meaning to try to come here for awhile now, so glad we finally made the choice to come in. The food was above and beyond. Super kind staff and cozy atmosphere. Great German beer. And to top it all off, I highly recommend getting the cherry strudel for dessert. We will come back again to try the oven baked pizza and live music on the week days.

This restaurant earns a perfect score in every single category. The food: absolutely perfect, right down to the last bite. The service: out of this world -- quite possibly the best we've ever had. And the ambiance: the name of the place says it all -- Himmel, or Heaven in English. My husband loved his Hühnerschnitzel, Rosti, and vegetables. My Wienerschnitzel and Deutscherkartoffelsalat were very good, but the Rotkraut stole the show. I finally found my mom's recipe in a restaurant: red cabbage, apples, cinnamon, and raisins, with a hint of bacon for flavoring. The best part were the talented musicians and the welcoming owners and staff. The lead guitarist was exceptionally talented, and his vocals provided the perfect ambiance for the occasion. We also enjoyed meeting Alex, Miss Lynn, Miss Carol, and Miss Diane. They really welcomed us like family. We've definitely found our new favorite restaurant.

The best of what Lincoln Square has to offer. The portions are huge and the food is so high quality and just delicious. It feels home made in the best way. The staff is wonderful, helpful, friendly and kind. I cannot recommend this place highly enough. I haven’t tried the pizza yet but it’s at the top of my list.

The Spezel soup was lacking in flavour. But dunk that pretzel bread in it with a generous coating of butter. This is amazing - das is ser gut!!! Weiner schnitzel Yum🇩🇪 The mushroom Chicken and the Weiner schnitzel are out of this world

This place is amazing! The food, the German, family atmosphere, the accordion player, the food. Did I say food already? Can't say it enough. This is an absolutely fun place to spend 2 hours or the evening as a couple or a party. We had the Rahm Schnitzel and pork shank. Both were delicious.

Enjoyed the Sauerbraten was one of the best I have had and don't forget to have the hot apple strudel which had some of the best whipped cream I have ever had!

If you’re near Himmel’s stop in for some food. Everything is excellently prepared. Italian favorites and some of the best German food in the city. Fabulous home-made breads and portions that will feed a small army - including the kids meals. Plus the Chef will step out of the kitchen at times to greet the guests and provide some evening music.

Had an amazing pepperoni pizza here tonight. But more than the pizza, the atmosphere could not have been more warm and welcoming. I was going to take my pizza to go, but ended up staying and eating at the bar and making new friends. It felt like my own episode of Cheers! I will definitely be back.

Such a neighborhood staple! If you live in Lincoln Square is a must go to. The ambiance is always cozy and the servers and bartenders are so fun and nice. Is one of my favorite German places in the neighborhood! Also love their pretzel bread and schnitzel

Very authentic and unique. Very few places like this left in Chicago. Draft beer list is fantastic. Schnitzels are unforgettably delicious. Their pizza is also very good if you're in mood for one. Live music is played frequently and people just have so much fun - dancing and enjoying themselves. Many regulars who are fun to talk to. This is absolutely a gem.

Came here for their Oktoberfest celebration and was not disappointed! Absolutely great live music and food - highly recommend trying the weiner schnitzel and champagne pork medallions!

I lived in Austria and this is the closest place I can get to Bavarian cuisine here in Chicago. Sarah at the bar is fantastic. We’ve been here plenty of times but we’ve had a fantastic experience at the bar. Bring your friends and family here. Pizza is really good. Consider getting a reservation for Friday and Saturday nights.

Dined at Himmel's for the first time and came away very impressed. The pretzel bread is divine - order the steak tartare and spread some on a few slices for a delicious pre-main course treat. The schnitzel was precisely what I hoped for. I took away one star for food ONLY because they gave me so much I couldn't finish it all in one sitting! Our server, Sara, took amazing care of us and was genuinely warm and engaging. There was no way I could try the German food AND a pizza in the same meal, but I will definitely be sampling the pizza soon, and I suspect it will make an equally good impression.

In the past month, I’ve been to Himmel’s twice and both have been very pleasant experiences. I knew I liked it from the start, but now I know I love this hidden Lincoln Square gem. Is it merely a coincidence that the owners' last name "Himmel" means "heaven" in German? I think not. ;) The first time I visited, my daughter and I sat at the bar and enjoyed a cocktail and a couple beers (Spaten Lager and Hofbraeuhaus Dunkel) and some delicious food while Sarah, the bartender, attended to us and was very cheerful. I opted, at Sarah's suggestion, to go with the family specialty, Champignon Rahm Schnitzel, which is pork cutlet smothered in a mushroom gravy, with red cabbage and Spaetzle. It was delicious comfort food, and there was plenty of it. I forgot what my daughter had, but she liked it and took some home. Last weekend, following a show at Old Town School of Folk Music, a group of 14 of us showed up unannounced and without a reservation. The owners, who are sisters, took it all in stride and with a laugh or two, and treated us like family (only better, haha). Again, I opted for the Champignon Rahm Schnitzel. But before that, I indulged in the trademark pretzel bread and a cup of liver dumpling soup. (I don't usually go for liver but was feeling adventurous and was pleasantly surprised how delicious it was!) Others in our group ate Wienerschnitzel and Chicken Schnitzel. Everyone was very happy with the food quality and portions—which are MORE than generous. At the end, the owner happily split the check many ways (we had asked ahead of time, so as not to be "that guy.") The owners were assisted in waiting on us by a pleasant young man. We did not happen to be there on one of the three nights they have live music, which is, I believe, Thursday through Saturday. With all entrees under $25 and many under $20, the restaurant offers a tremendous value. Did I mention there's also pizza on the menu??? The atmosphere is cute and cozy, with lots of family- and Bavaria-related memorabilia, but not overly cutesy. I reserve 5-star reviews for places that, for what they are intended to be, have no room for improvement. This is that kind of place. I wouldn't change a thing. I wish I lived closer to Lincoln Square, but now we have one more reason to go back to the neighborhood. As someone who has seen all too many authentic German restaurants in Chicago turn into hipster locales and apartment buildings, I truly appreciate Himmel's and the sisters who so lovingly host their guests there!

My husband and I have been wanting to try this restaurant. We visited last evening. Our server happened to be Diane Himmel. We laughed that we had the same 1st.name. Our food was delicious the duck was crisp and juicy. My husband that the sausage plate. The pretzel bread is delicious. A lovely friendly restaurant.

Himmels is absolutely perfect. A family business that makes you feel as such. The entire team is friendly and engaging. Their food is perfection as well as their authentic German beers. Their wood fire oven that cooks their pizzas, italian cuisine and authentic family German recipes brings a feeling of home every time I visit. If you need a suggestion - house salad - steak tartar - pizza - chicken parmigiana - rham schnitzel - chicken schnitzel

This place is incredible! We made a reservation just an hour in advance, and it turned out perfectly. The live music and overall atmosphere were fantastic. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent. Although we're not German, we thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience. I highly recommend visiting!

A True Gem! From the moment you walk in until the moment you leave, you’re treated like family. The warmth of the staff, the inviting atmosphere, and the attention to detail make this place truly special. On certain nights, you can enjoy fantastic live music that adds the perfect touch to the experience. The food is absolutely wonderful—beautifully prepared, flavorful, and clearly made with care. Whether you're a regular or a first-time guest, you’ll leave already planning your next visit.

Sick German food. I got the pork shank and it was so tender. My wife got the schnitzel and we shared some apple strudel with ice cream. My only complaint is that the food is a bit pricey.

R

Was here today for an Austrian day banquet event. Good food but pacing was slow and for coffee they were serving out of espresso machine only so results would be good if I waited around for it but it is too slow for a banquet type event.

We so enjoyed the food, very unattentive service, we were the only diners in the middle of the afternoon, server took no interest in us, took the order, brought it out wrong, never got us the drinks we ordered but certainly tried to charge us for them. Food was delicious, but our treatment was frustrating. Pretzel bread was terrific, if only an investment in quality staff, then this would be 5 stars. probst!

A

Just okay food. Service was slow. I asked the waitress for the wifi password and her face got distorted as she snarled out she did not know the password. Her attitude was that serving us was a bother to her. When the electronic bill arrived at the table on her iPad it had a 20% tip preselected. If I had my way I would have selected 0%. I did give the 20% tip but that's the last time she will see any money from me. For the $110 we spent on our dinner that Friday night I felt completely ripped off. There are much better choices in restaurants around the city that actually want your business.

Better to take out. Rude service from waiters/waitresses, but bus boys are nice though. Food is good, so hats off to cook :)

D

This place really deserves zero stars for how terrible the services but because it’s a local business I feel obligated to give it five star view but choose some matter is every time I go in there they treat me like I do not belong. I feel like it’s a place for old people not young folks…… waitresses need to work on their attitude

J
Janiz Resendiz

Not happy at all with this place. We made a reservation for Mother’s Day and when we got there they told us they just had a private event and were not open anymore then another person told us they were going to respect our reservation. Turned out they charged us $45 per person for a leftover buffet from a private event. What? Not even including the soft drinks. I wish we have taken my mother in law somewhere else. We didn’t want to make a scene because mothers days but it is pretty upsetting. (Also I found hair in my food)

J
Jeffery Nagel

We called and got no answer earlier in the day. No recording saying they were closed for 2 weeks. Nothing on their website saying they were clised for 2 weeks. Got down there. Paid for parking. Found a sign on the door saying sorry for the inconvenience and they were closed for two weeks. Put a note on your website and a recording on your answering service.
