🥑 Vegetarian 5 Point Review 1. Taste – 9/10 Fusion tacos with bold flavor twists. The butternut squash taco was a standout.A good amount of spice and easily a 10/10. The cauliflower taco was a bit sweet, interesting, but might not be for everyone (7.5/10) 2. Ambience – 7/10 Bright, clean space with good sunlight. Nothing too fancy, but a pleasant vibe for a casual meal. 3. Service – 5/10 Sluggish service despite it not being busy. Waited 15–20 minutes just for chips and tacos 4. Value for Money – 8/10 Surprisingly affordable for a Michelin Guide spot. Two filling tacos for $11 is solid, especially compared to places like Puesto. 5. Recommendations Get the butternut squash taco as a vegan/vegetarian —no-brainer. The chips and salsa are worth it too. If you’re feeling adventurous, try the cauliflower taco, but be warned: it’s got a sweet edge.
Transported to the other side of the border. Elevated yet the best part of basic from the tortillas to the 72 hour carnitas. Prices were right, margaritas were right, atmosphere was right! Our server was on point. Thank you for making my birthday celebration extra special Caleb! 10/10 highly recommend!
First of all, I know the food is the most important thing in a restaurant, but the service was just INCREDIBLE. I feel bad I don't remember her name, but our waitress was so kind, attentive and just so energetic, me and my gf loved her. Now the food. Carnitas tacos were the best tacos I HAVE EVER HAD. A perfect combination of salty, acidity from what I think were tomatillos, and crunchy. They had a special pozole which was phenomenal too. Their fish taco is really famous. Disclaimer, I don't like fish tacos, but we still ordered and it was the best one I've had ever. Personally I would still stick with the carnitas and steak, but if you do enjoy them, it is indeed very flavorful. Overall 10/10 experience, if we didn't live in Chicago, we would become regulars without a doubt.
Stumbled upon this unassuming eatery on a sunny Thursday afternoon, and it turned out to be some of the best tacos I’ve ever had. The open, airy ambiance made for a relaxed and inviting setting, and the service was truly top-notch. Our server, Caleb, was fantastic—passionate and deeply knowledgeable. He enthusiastically shared the story behind the restaurant and dove into the thought and technique behind each dish, from preparation to seasoning. They also have an excellent happy hour. I especially loved the spiced Jamaica—a beautifully aromatic drink infused with anise and warming mixed spices. It struck a perfect balance of sweet, tangy, and floral notes. As for the food—absolutely unforgettable. The Squashroom and Cauliflower tacos are two of the most inspired vegetarian tacos I’ve ever had. The Squashroom features a delicately battered lion’s mane mushroom paired with a squash blossom, bright verde salsa, and a bold red chili paste. It’s a mesmerizing harmony of textures and flavors. The Cauliflower taco might have been my favorite. Smoky, crispy cauliflower meets a crunchy eggplant “bacon” strip, all topped with a deeply flavorful sweet-and-tangy mole. The fresh corn tortillas elevate every bite—they’re the perfect vehicle for all these bold, creative flavors. I also tried the Baja Fish taco, which was equally impressive. The fish was fried to perfection—crispy on the outside, tender on the inside—accompanied by a spicy salsa, tangy tartar sauce, and a touch of mesclun greens for freshness. An incredible combination. In short: this place is doing something truly special. Innovative, intentional, and absolutely delicious. Someone give them their Michelin star already!
Lola 55 nails the craft taco vibe, lively room, polished service, and the Michelin Bib Gourmand nod makes sense. Our spread hit all the notes, crisp Caesar, juicy chicken tacos, a steak taco, one Baja fish, the kids quesadilla, and the Tres Hermanas. The standouts were the fish and the beans, both among the best I have had, the fish perfectly crisp and flaky, the beans silky, deeply seasoned, and addictive. Shout out to Arlene, warm, knowledgeable, and generous with details about the vibe and the food. She also shared how they evolved from self-serve to full service, and you can feel that in the hospitality. Five stars from me. It is not my everyday go-to, I lean super healthy most days, but when I want excellent tacos with real care behind them, this is where I am coming.
Great place for tacos! The tacos were delicious. They have a machine making corn tortillas, and they come ready with sauce, so no need for extra lime or hot sauce. I had steak, pork belly al pastor, and a fish taco, all very filling. The tacos felt elegant but tasted great. I looked them up online are featured in the 2022 Michelin guide which makes sense after trying the food. I will be back soon.
Great place to get a light lunch. Tacos here are quite delicious and reasonably priced. The Baja style fish taco is great and the chicken in the mesquite chicken taco was cooked to perfection. The masa fritas and its dipping sauce was very refreshing and the elote was a very fun side to have. Also the mole sauce with the quesadillas was very unique and delicious. Overall the price to quality of food here is extremely high! Parking can be a bit tricky here so plan accordingly!
Had such a great experience here! The tacos were absolutely delicious — fresh, flavorful, and perfectly made. The margaritas were just as amazing, super refreshing and well-balanced. Great vibes, friendly service, and overall an awesome spot to enjoy good food and drinks. Definitely coming back!
Seriously good, upscale tacos! I come here at least once a month and I have never disappointed. Their fish taco is excellent! Also, they have two killer veggie options if you don’t want meat. I like meat but still sometimes prefer their cauliflower taco. The beans, the rice, and the drink selections are also quite good. Seriously good food, cannot recommend enough!
Saw online recommendations and well worth it! Had the squashroom and cauliflower tacos and the flavours were a bomb! Happy servers, good weather and spicy mezcal margaritas in happy hour - what more can you ask for!
Lola 55 is a place to get unique tacos and drinks. If you are looking for traditional/classic tastes, you won't find that here. This is a modern interpretation and experience that may not suit everyone but may still be fun enough to try once. Our server explained it best when they said, "you can go get a regular taco anywhere, but if you want something different, you come here." I believe that's the easiest way to describe this place in a nutshell. The dining area is bright open and modern with an almost industrial vibe going for it. I ordered a Dirty Matcha Mocktail, a Mesquite Chicken Taco, a Baja Style Fish Taco, a Rainbow Cauliflower Taco, and the Apple Pie Churros for dessert. Along with the Dirty Matcha, I got to try the Brewchata and Pina Vice. The drinks took quite a bit to come in so more on them later (got around halfway through our food before they showed up). All the tacos were seasoned well throughout. The Mesquite Chicken had a nice chew/texture to it and the cucumber and salsa gave a nice flavor contrast to the chicken. The Baja Fish was crispy on the outside and moist in the inside. I'd say this was my favorite out of the 3 and probably one of the best fish tacos I ever had. The tang from the vinaigrette and pickled serrano just rounds out the flavor well. Only a subtle heat too from the pepper, I love the execution on this taco. And lastly the Rainbow Cauliflower taco. This one didn't quite hit it for me. It had a sweet savory profile, while not bad, was just missing something that I couldn't put my finger on. It was the sauciest of the three tacos but just lacked some "oomph". Also they use the "soggy" corn type tortillas here. I'm not a fan of that type and I believe any taco that uses this type could be elevated by just toasting or grilling the tortillas. So the drinks....well they are just as unique as the tacos. Bizarre almost. I really wanted some coffee and the Dirty Matcha has cold brew in it but it's such a small amount that it was probably just included for taste. It lists only two ingredients in it and kinda just tastes like dirty chocolate tap water (Brewchata and Pina Vice had similar taste too). 🤣 The glasses are loaded with ice so you're probably getting 6oz of liquid tops. I'd probably just get a beer next time. Finally the Apple Pie Churros. This was a highlight, on its own the churros are fine. Crispy exterior with a slightly doughy interior, but the apple pie ice cream just takes it to the next level. I wouldn't say I like apple pie that much but this was just executed well. Basically a deconstructed apple pie ala mode with strong distinct cinnamon spice without being overpowering. Nice. Service was good, except for the unusually long wait for drinks. We were given waters promptly though. And it wasn't really busy during our visit, around 25% capacity. Don't know what happened here. Prices on everything was reasonable. Slightly elevated, but it's expected for this type of establishment. While definitely not for everyone, Lola 55 is still an easy recommend for anyone looking for something unique or a twist on classic food. A mild adventure if you will. Yes, somethings could use some tweaks and changes but you should give it a try a least once. I hope they continue to improve, as it would be fun to dine here again.
The steak and smoked carnitas tacos were definitely 5 stars. So good and tasty. Must haves. If you have to have only one, go steak. The Baja fish was a bit too greasy. Too much breading and not enough fish it took away some of the good sauce and flavor. Service was great. Sat at the bar and the stuff was extremely helpful and inviting. Visit this spot while in San Diego.
We swing in for the happy hour and got the cauliflower taco and beer. It was nice that they had a few vegiterian/vegan options for tacos that were unique. The cauliflower one had an eggplant bacon that added a nice crisp and smoky flavor. The beer was just okay but they arent a brewery so I wasnt expecting it to be amazing. The staff was pretty quick and friendly and had a few recommendations that were helpful as well. Overall a nice place to grab a bite.
The tacos looked good but the taste was mixed. Some tacos had too much citrus already added, some were overpowered by the level of spice, the fish taco was very soggy and heavily breaded. The best taco was the steak taco. My cocktail looked kind of like goo and puke combined but actually tasted okay. You order and pay at the counter and they bring out the food and drinks very quickly. The vibe is seemingly upscale but it felt more like a fast food place. Some of the seats had leather falling off the buttrest and overall the place just does not seem well maintained.
The smoked carnitas, beans and rice are great. Every other taco I've tried there is just okay. The staff yesterday had zero tequila knowledge and didn't know what a ramekin lid was.. Also was quoted a certain price for tequila only to realize they charge 3 bucks extra for a neat pour, I get it, usually 2 oz and not 1.5. But then I got charged another 3 bucks for a rocks pour. Not sure if this is how the business wants to do it or if it was an employee mistake. Either way, they need to train their people more. This spot used to be amazing, not so much anymore sadly
I came to Lola 55 for the first time last night. For a Michelin-rated spot, there were some ups and few too many downs, but let’s start with the good. The restaurant is very nicely designed and the staff are really helpful. It’s comfy and modern, with super high ceilings, a fully stocked bar, and even some couch seating. Staff do their best to keep up with the rush and are always responsive. The highlights of my meal were the masa frita, rice and beans, and chicken taco. The masa frita were incredibly flavorful and memorable. The rice and beans were pretty good as well. The pickled onion in the beans was a nice touch that helped balance flavors. The chicken taco was by far the best taco, and it was spicy (but I love it hot). On the other hand, the steak, pork belly, and fish tacos were all kind of ‘meh’. The pork belly had a slightly off flavor…and just wasn’t all that flavorful to begin with. The steak taco was really, really chewy—like way too chewy. I felt like a dog playing tug of war. The fish taco, though, was dreadful. When you first bit in it tasted OK, but the aftertaste was extremely fishy and off-putting. Overall, I think a couple menu items are worth it here—masa frita, chicken taco, and the ice cream (which I forgot to mention)—but otherwise it’s way too pricey for what you’re getting. $30 for a few tacos and beans? And what are these Michelin inspectors smoking? I’ve had better tacos for 50 pesos at a random street vendor after a 5-minute walk into Tijuana.
Places like this remind me to never trust michelin bib gourmand. So bad and im not going to hold back on describing how bad it was, Im actually upset. Pics look great, so i got steak tacos, mushroom, and 72 hour carnitas Not a single thing was edible i mean really. The steak was so so chewy, the sauces on everything was drowned in salt i couldnt taste anything else and couldnt continue eating. So nasty My bf had ti spit out the chicken one because the sauce was so bad. House salsa is so over salted with no other flavour than that, so i couldnt even try and help the tacos out because the salsa was also bad. Guac is underseasoned Chips are like chewy and oil soaked Im in shock how bad this was on all fronts The best thing was rice and beans and even then, nothing notable
