Opinions de Hickory House Barbecue Dallas
Only place in Dallas that still serves good portions, great food at reasonable prices. Prices so low you should be motivated to TIP your waitress the cost of the meal ! They work for it,earn it and deserve it!
Hole in the wall at it’s finest!!! Excellent food, ambiance and cool, salty characters running the place! It’s a family feel from the cooks to waitress, genuine care among them and in serving the finest down home soul food at good prices! Indoor and indoor/outdoor to outdoor dining- you choose. I love this place, it feels like home.
Delicious food and amazing service. Our waitress was great!
Best BBQ and breakfast ever! Nick , Owner, goes out of his way to please his customers. Waitresses are friendly & fast. Live bands every Friday night on the patio. Juiciest burgers I've ever had. I highly recommend this 'hole in the wall' gem!! Prices are lower than most restaurants and servings are plentiful. I'll be back for sure!!!
Went with a few colleagues who hadn't spent much time in Texas here, and we all loved it. As a native Texan, I'm not easily impressed but they had good brisket and great fried okra. The staff and other patrons were very nice!
Everytime I come here during my lunch break it’s always a good time. Food is always on point, the service is even better. I won’t lie the food here is good, the vibe is good but what makes me want to come back is the price point. It’s an amazing value. As long as I’m in Dallas I’ll make it a point to come visit Hickory House BBQ.
First time here at Hickory House. This is a definite go to for some great southern diner food. It is an old building and have been in business for 72 years. Very unassuming from the exterior but it has a awesome down home feel. Their daily specials were only $10.77 and we also got the four meet bbq plate for $15.95. Food was pretty good. The banana pudding was to die for! What made it nice is Brandy our server. She made you feel at home and welcome. Also, live music on Fridays so we will be back. For just some good food I highly recommend.
Location may be an issue and the exterior needs a complete overhaul, but the food was fantastic! I ordered the Philly cheesesteak and while it wasn't loaded like you would typically think the taste was phenomenal. the company I dined with also had great things to say. We had kids with us and their we're spills but the staff was super nice about it and so helpful. Don't judge this "book" by it's cover. I highly recommend it.
This place has sports paraphernalia and is very much a casual old place. That is what makes this place a hidden treasure. The food was fantastic and the service was great. Even the staff cooking asked how we liked the food. If you're looking for fall off the bone rub meat or tasty brisket, go here. $27 for two meals, tea and Arnold palmer. Wins all around.
We were lucky enough to go after the dinner rush. I had the pulled pork. Delicious and juicy on it's own. But the bbq sauce was on point. Sweet tea a 10. Coleslaw 10. Potato salad 10. Fried okra 10. Pecan pie 10. Nice folks working there.
Absolutely love! Someone recommended it so my friend and I checked it out and sooooo glad we did! That burger was delicious 😋!! The place is pretty neat and clean. We ate outside and enjoyed every minute of it. The staff was great...and funny. We are sold and will be regulars from now on. And all at great prices!! Def recommend!!
Great lunch spot. Good food, good prices. Be sure and check your bag before you leave if you get a to go order. They have left out part of our order on multiple occasions. Other than that it's a great place.
When I walked into this location, I did not know what to expect. I was driving in the area and the sign read “best burger”. And ironically, that is what I was in the mood for a Hamburger…. Walking up you think the place is just some hole in the wall type of Ol School Diner. Boy was I wrong at face value. When you walk into the establishment, you walk into a beautiful classic looking diner with a sports atmosphere, smiling faces, and the smell of delicious barbecue aroma. Great conversation and a large menu for all sorts of tastes depending on what you’re in the mood for. I opted to get a double bacon cheeseburger with french fries. They make the french fries fresh. The beef is fresh unfrozen beef. Nice and juicy and cooked well done to perfection. The vegetables are fresh. And the food was delicious. I will definitely be going back. They have now acquired a new customer and I will try multiple things on their menu.
We were very happy with our visit today. It was my 1st time there and definitely not my last. Our waitress was Amazing. Her customer service was perfect. Loved all Dallas Cowboys Memorabilia. Also the gentleman cleaning tables was friendly n welcoming .. Food well Totally Fabulous..
I love this place, a lot of people don't know about this hidden gem and I am afraid I don't want to give much details either to keep it a nice secret, calm and with good bbq and now breakfast! The server is a nice sweet lady, makes you feel very welcome.
I give the full 5 stars. The first thing I tried was the roast beef sandwich. It was super tasty and I loved it. I remember that the served it too notch in my to go carton. The texture , I can remember stood out. When you enter the aroma let's you quickly be aware that you are in for some special southern BBQ and you can just taste it through the air😃The full stars is for the quality for what you are charged. A place like this can definitely keep you coming back for more. They also have some great looking desert's I haven't tried. Only good things to say about this place. Thank you for being there for us. Best food on this street!!!😎👍🏼
My husband and I stopped here to have lunch Saturday. On the building it says BEST CHEESE BURGER. So that’s what I ordered. My husband ordered the BBQ plate. When we got our food. His plate was huge! My burger looked amazing!! I will tell you my burger was AMAZING!! It very well could be the best burger I have ever had!! The price was more than far for the amount of food you get. The staff was friendly and the service was fast. We will be back.
Loved this little "hole in the wall" place. Good food, good service and Great Music 🎶 🌻Rockin' Robert was Awesome!
We ordered 1/2 lb hamburger steak plate. It comes with salad, fries and Texas toast. We also had the 4 meat combo bbq plate which comes with ribs, ham links and brisket. Everything was amazing!
I am Texan, born and raised. I eat beef for breakfast lunch and dinner. My dessert is sausage. My snacks are mashed potatoes and chilli. To say I know BBQ is an understatement. It is my life. I am nothing without BBQ. A group of us were in town for the auto show. We were staying in downtown and were looking to try out Dallas BBQ. We're from Houston, so already we had this preconception that it would not be as good as Houston BBQ. BOY WERE WE WRONG. We literally went out on a cruise, looking for spots to do a little photo shoot of our cars, when we notice this place. It's got the best view of the hotel, and that big ball thing. We decided to go into the restaurant and get something to eat, not thinking much of it. There's no fancy sign, no flashing lights, and the parking lot is just a dirt lot. The prices are very modest. But the meats could have been from Heaven, and I would believe it. This was simply the BEST BBQ I have ever had. Ever. I could not believe this little restaurant could produce such an exquisite set of meats. Everyone looked at each other thinking the exact thing. We were all Texans with decades of BBQ tasting experience, and unanimously agreed to make this our number one spot for BBQ. We got to meet the pitmaster. He was very humble, but I could tell I wasn't telling him something he didn't know. You can tell he's been praised so many times. I honestly hope he bottles his sauce and makes a shelf stable version that doesn't compromise the taste. He was willing to give us a quart to take home, but guaranteed that it would go bad in a few days. If you're still reading this, stop and go visit this little restaurant. You will not regret it.
I pass by this place on the reg and I always say I will stop next time. Today turned into next time. Next time should have been much sooner. The waitresses were very friendly and we talked the entire time. Never looked at my phone. I consider my self a big guy and ordered the double meat bacon cheese burger and WOW, it was HUGE! Great prices too. They recommended the Philly cheese steak next visit. Just go and see for yourself. Enjoy 😉!
My rib plate was good, didnt like the potato salad. Ribs were amazing!!! I will go back❤️
I've been going here since I was a kid . My grandpa's bar was right down the street so we came here to eat. Good atmosphere .
Pretty great. I feel we went a little early, but it is a good time. Definitely the type of place I wish we had back home
Old school drive in and diner. Friendly service and the best BBQ. Huge onion rings crispy and very tasty. Backed up to the Beautiful Downtown Dallas skyline... Fridays feature Rock and Blues bands,,,.my favorite is the 'Joe City band" Adult beverages available and Sweet Texas Tea. TV screens offer sports , news and other special events... Good for the whole family...come hungry but you won't leave that way
Had the Steak and Eggs for breakfast. Loved the atmosphere. Just like when I was growing up. Good food to boot. Restaurants need to get back to this old school feel. Spots in the back for bobtail. I would say a single trailer could make it, but there's a couple mud holes, after a rain, get soft. Easy to get into from Fuel City side. No crossover from other direction. Indoor and outside seating available. I hear their hamburgers are amazing and they have breakfast through supper on the menu.
Amaxing, amazing, amazing food! The place has a very laid back vibe and some of the best Texas BBQ. This is the (and I mean this in the nicest way possible) "hole-in-the-wall" place you are looking for. The ribs fall off the bone and the beef brisket is so tender. They have carry out and dine-in. The sweet tea is perfect. As a former Texan it made me remember why I never wanted to leave. If you are looking for what some of the best Texas BBQ is, go here.
A hidden gem that all city employees seem to know about . Great specials and all the women wait staff are all pleasant
The best home cooking you'll find anywhere near downtown dallas. Great BBQ but my favorite is the breakfast, served any time of day! Authentic vintage vibes (established in 1952) and great service every time really make this one of the best places to eat near downtown especially considering the open parking. Highly recommend.
Overall, this location does a solid job for a fast-food restaurant. The food was prepared quickly and came out hot and fresh, which is really what you’re looking for when you stop by. The menu had a good variety, and everything tasted the way it should—nothing fancy, just consistent and satisfying. The staff was polite and kept things moving, even during a busy period. Orders were taken accurately, and the wait time was reasonable. The dining area was clean and organized, and the atmosphere was what you’d expect for a casual place to grab a quick meal. If you’re looking for a reliable spot to eat without spending a lot of time or money, this place gets the job done. I’d come back again when I’m in the area.
You know, sometimes we overlook the basics and get so oriented toward what’s great in Bishop Arts and forget about the places outside downtown that keep this city rolling. My riding partner and I stopped in for breakfast here because we forgot cash for Fuel City. I asked if they take Apple Pay and if we can bring our bikes in. Affirmative on both, sweet. They love football and the cowboys here. It shows. The spot has nothing but stories to tell. It’s welcoming and the breakfast tacos, omelette and biscuits and gravy were fantastic. The grill spits fire. This place is worth a stop and it’s definitely a place to get your food fix. Happy to add to my breakfast rotation
This was my first visit. I felt like I had been coming there for a long time. The people there was so kind and so welcoming and so caring. I cannot say enough. The food was sooo good. When I visit Dallas I will be there.
A place with character and its own style! Excellent food, outstanding BBQ and lovely people. A must if you are out for some amazing Ribs and Pulled Pork in Dallas. The BBQ sauce is finally an absolute dream! Many thanks Rosie for the service, I will come back for sure when I am in the area again!
Can you say WOW! Don’t judge a book by its cover - just bring your appetite here, you won’t be disappointed! Beer, coffee, salad, and these two massive plates all for $30.00 served by the lovely Tonya. We’ve travelled all the way from Australia and they made us feel right at home here in Dallas instead. Can’t recommend this place highly enough for taste, service, and value for money.
Fantastic little mom and pop shop. Serving size was great, prices were amazing and really enjoyed the atmosphere. Bbq ribs were good. The potato salad had a good mustard bute which I really enjoyed and the fried okra actually tasted like okra! Coworker had a sewet tea and sait it was really good too. Will definitely be my go to place next time I'm back in Dallas!!!!!
It's a lil hole in the wall (Gem) 👍 The Family stopped in for a bite to eat. Honey and family friendly. Food and portions were adequate. I ordered the beef brisket & rib meal. Very good 😋 The service was top notch and waitress were very attentive. Coming back to Texas, I/We will be back.
First shout out to Tonya! She’s amazing! Second the food was awesome! The burgers were well done, the onion rings and fries were made fresh to order! I also got the Chopped beef to go! It was pretty good. If you blink you will miss it. They have huge burgers!!! (Everyone had deserts that looked amazing) I was full 😃! You can also have a beer while you eat the menu is filled with breakfast, lunch, dinner and steaks!
Visited on a Sunday afternoon. No wait at all. Very home grown feeling, inside and out. Nice waitress and cook ( I think he was the owner) . I ordered cheese burger with bacon and egg and tots and my girlfriend had the same but with onion rings. OMG, this was one of the best burgers I’ve had, and I’m picky with burgers. Everything was well done as I requested, the tots were crispy. I even consider going back the next day for another one. They have alot to choose from on the menu, and the prices were very reasonable. They are also known for their bbq, so I will be back to try that. I definitely recommend.
Excellent. The beef and pork were awesome and really cheap. The staff was super friendly to me (it was my first time). Service was fast too I found this place because of google maps and I am not surprised why it gets so many good reviews. I will come back next time I am in town
Place was fairly empty when I visited, but that suited me fine. Service was very quick and friendly, and it had all the hallmarks of a true BBQ place. Outdoor seating, wooden 'down home' feel, ancient tv in the corner, napkins by the roll at every table. No signage has to tell you that this is a BBQ joint because the place itself will convey it. It's not trendy, and that's the best part about it. They've got kick ass food and you can take it ot leave it. Restaurant has been featured in a few television series (The Good Guys, for one) and proudly says as such on the wall, which adds to the charm. Definitely a hole in the wall dive that will have you coming back for more. Also there is a room in the back with a blue couch that customers are welcome to. Not sure what it's for, but it's there if you need a couch I guess?
Everything about this place looks questionable - location, staff, clientele, whether it will collapse with you inside, whether you'll get held up during your visit, etc. It's kind of an all around scary feel. You have to walk through the kitchen to get to the bathroom for crying out loud. For entertainment on the way, notice the couch in the roped off room and what the sign on it says. HOWEVER, they have GREAT food and my server did a good job and I was thoroughly entertained during the two times that I ate there. Meal one was pulled pork with no nasty chunks of fat, corn, baked beans, potato salad, and cornbread. They were all large portions and tasted wonderful with sweet tea. How much was the bill? $8.99. The second time I went with another person. I had the BBQ tacos, green beans, potato salad, corn, and sweet tea. He had a barbecue sandwich vegetable and water. Again you ask "How much was the bill?" $14.94. Sure, those prices do not include the tip but at those prices you can afford to leave a better tip. The food is awesome and I will go back the next time I'm in the area.
Very good juicy burger! I'll be back!
Food was excellent! Chicken fried chicken was outstanding, juicy and tender with good breading. Baked potato was just perfect and not dry. Can't wait to do breakfast here. Great diner experience that I recommend.
Good food. Decent prices. Loved the sausage. Ribs were par for a BBQ joint. I'm not a huge fan of their BBQ sauce. Waitresses are helpful and friendly. It has that great "hole in the wall" feel to it. Owner is Greek, I believe. They have several Greek options on the menu (I asked why, because that seemed random). Apparently the gyros and Greek food are great.
We truly enjoyed our experience here! The food was good and truly a hole in the wall with food that taste like I was back home in Alabama. I got the rib sandwich and okra. Only thing we didn't enjoy was one of the waitress mouth. She was using very foul language and loud with it. That wasnt a experience we were wanting after leaving church but overall we truly enjoyed ourselves and our waitress she was really sweet
Burgers down right delicious and the fries yes wish they would share more because they’re good but I’ll deal with the cards I’m dealt just a good ole burger and etc joint 👍🏼
I like a good hole in the wall greasy spoon type place and this is one of those. Dont expect polish and shine here, just decent food at a reasonable price and a staff that's just as rough...would recommend for someone comfortable out of their safe space. Will be returning to try the breakfast menu soon.
Nice atmosphere for a club scene. Menu has a great presentation, however, the food fell short on both taste and portion. For the price I expect more. Parking horrible
Overall, it is average. Starting with the good, the environment was fantastic. Under the bridge with a great view of the Omni hotel and downtown Dallas is a great location, and the indoor/outdoor feel, live country music, and retro sports decor set a great old-time and southern country feel. The disappointing part was the food itself; we got the cheeseburger, rib plate, and chicken fried steak. All of them did not live up to expectations that had been built up by the environment and tasted more like school cafeteria food than southern comfort food. The food and beer was cheap, though, which combined with the environment makes it a nice place to sit and drink.
Great service. Food was plated nicely, ribs were dried out but had good flavor. Side dishes were bland. This is a very old family run restaurant in need of an end to end makeover with a new menu. However, it's reliable.
Tried this location because I was told their burgers 🍔 were good here. Upon arrival, I was a little hesitant and not impressed with the kitchen or the cook that didn't have on gloves. HHB is in need of a complete TLC makeover. Surprisingly, after praying over the food order. The burgers were almost as good as a homemade burger with a reasonable price. The Burgers wasn't made with one of those processed meat patties.
10/27/25, lunch: FOOD - edible (they've been around so long that I feel like I caught them/chef on a bad day); SERVICE - superb
So I decide to give them a try and have a bite dining in. The building and atmosphere is consistent with age. Flies love this place. There were a lot of people there so business was consistent. The prices are decent. The food was not what I expected but it may be what I ordered, probably should have went with the burgers instead of the ribs. The sweet tea and fresh onions and peppers were stand out. Will try the burgers to go next time.
The sides are good. Don't get the pulled pork unless you like fat.
After the zoo, my zoo critters were hungry and needed to be fed. Looking for a BBQ place so we landed at this place. As you arrive, you can see its a throw back to the old drive in burger joints from the 60's. Parking is located under a bridge and rocky pavement. You could smell the cooking and hear the band setting up for their upcoming set. We decided to sit inside and get out of the sun. Our server was very polite and showed us to our booth. The seating was a bit challenging for this family of five due to the old furniture. We ordered burgers for the kids, the little cashew ate chicken strips and parent shared brisket with BBQ ribs. The bathrooms are located behind the kitchen and it's really an Old School set up. Our server continued to be there for us as the food arrived. This place is know for the burgers yet the boys thought they were just burgers. The brisket was dry and a bit missing in flavor. The ribs were dry but the rub flavor stood out. We finished dinner with home made peach cobbler and chocolate cake. I would return but not as a top three choices.
Not very good. Maybe if you like super old school and simple/basic. But the meat was really fatty, tasted like it was not very fresh, and not much spice or flavor to the meat or the sauce. Only one kind of sauce and pretty bland. Bland and fatty. Really grimy space. Not very clean. Wasn't the worst, to be honest. But def doesn't deserve the rating it has. 2-3 stars max!
I had the country fried steak with mashed potatoes and cabbage and beans. All in all it was under basic. The chicken fried steak was overcooked. The mashed potatoes were under whipped and the cabbage was bland. And the bean was straight out the can. Great price though. But food under performed. Atmosphere seemed old and outdated too. I probably won’t be back.
I should have stuck to my gut when we pulled up. This restaurant is old and dirty. I ordered chicken tenders they were run of the mill bagged chicken tenders. Fries were undercooked, still hard in the middle. Texas toast was a piece of bread with some fake butter spray heated on the the skillet
Went by on a Saturday. Place was empty but heard good things. Ordered my food was waiting saw the kitchen guy drop something on the floor. Pick it up and place on the grill. Red flag didn't wash his hands. Proceed to cut brisket for a sandwich. Walk toward the fridge scratch the top of his backside put fries in the deep fryer. I seen enough already paid proceed to dump the food in the trash. Will never go back.
Airport branch, NEVER will I go back! Food is awful, cold, lettuce is like sliced 5 days ago. Bring your money somewhere. I should have known when we entered the restaurant that NOBODY WAS THERE! Awful food! If I could give ZERO, I will!
I'll start by saying the ribs tasted good. The line cook seemed to be the only one that kept his area clean and organized. I would not have eaten here if I had looked around before hand though. Everything about this place was unsanitary. The bathrooms are through the kitchen and you get a real look at the disgusting state of things. Buckets of foul smelling brown water. Flies everywhere , scooping ice with their bare hands. The prep kitchen was super dark. You could tell that the staff did not get along with each other, bickering in the dining room. Making comments how each other are worthless. Will not be back.
I just paid $15.00 for a TERRIBLE rib plate.
Workers smoking and doing lottery tickets. Extremely unclean and smelled nasty. Bathroom a disaster. Entire experience felt gross. Food was overly fatty and felt low quality. Waitress unprofessional and made everyone uncomfortable, but to her credit she was mostly well intentioned. Price pretty good.
I ordered a pulled pork sandwich and instead got a sliced brisket with peppers and onions mixed in it not worth it to me. Also ordered a loaded baked potato with chopped beef on it and instead received a bland baked potato with sour cream and cheese that’s it. I don’t think I’ll be back there anytime soon.
Wouldn’t know about the food. The servers were so rude upon sitting down we decided to go somewhere else. We were trying to situate ourselves at the table. Accidentally told them 5 people when it was 6. They threw the menus on the table. Didn’t pass out or be friendly and let us know their name. We decided to leave as we felt as a burden and not customers. As we said we were going to leave since we felt as a burden. The server then say “oh good”. I’ve worked in a restaurant for 10 years. We were never rude to them. If anything we were trying to be overly accommodating. I know it can be hard and stressful. But you should never be rude. Fake it. Even if you’re upset. So very upsetting.
Half the staff was sick and coughing everywhere. Chicken fried steak was good, but the hash browns were horrible. I don't know where the waitress went, waited around a long time to pay. After getting bit by mosquitos 4 times while waiting to pay (in December no less), I just put down some cash and left.
This place wasn't good at all. All the BBQ was oven cooked and tasted awful, they tried to cover it up with BBQ Sauce but it didn't help. Half the stuff I ordered was either out or they only had a few left (not enough to serve apperantly). Our waitress was really nice though. Beer was cold... Brisket tasted un seasoned and was really chewy Ribs were decent but the BBQ Sauce killed them Mashed Potatoes were just boiled Mashed Potatoes with butter Corn and Beans were straight out of a can. Like not prepared or anything, just heated and straight into a plate. Worst part was everything was about $70
This is a place I visited when I first moved to Texas. I'm not sure what happened to this place but the rib sandwich or hotlink sandwich didn't taste like anything what a waste ! I could of stayed home and made better food than this, this place needs a Remake FASURE! The outside entering the inside looks like a ran down facility where DONT NOBODY EVEN CARES ANYMORE ! BUT WHAT DO I KNOW IM JUST A TRAVELER EXPLORING THE WORLD 🌎 AND ALL THE GOODIES AND BAD GOODIES 😂
The cook had to ask the waitress several times to acknowledge that a customer was at the counter. Idk what exactly she was on but definitely on something off in her own world. She could not speak you had repeat everything two and three times. Her phone and cigarette were her top priority. I had called the order in at a qtr after 4pm and I paid for the food at 527pm. Don't let the size fool you! Its not worth it if the deep frier grease an't changed. As far as the actual hambergers ...it tasted like the surface of the grill had not been cleaned or even wiped off or down in at least a month. You can definitely taste clean crisp food and food that has been cooked on filthy surface. This was the filthy surface. For the price it was really disappointing.
It’s a dive, which means it had potential, but it was a flop. The chopped brisket sandwich I ordered was greasy and bland, and the fries were bland. Such a disappointment and waste of money. I took two bites and threw it out.
