I visited this pub on 16 November 2025 and truly wish more people knew about this remarkable place. My children and I enjoyed what was, without question, the best roast dinner we have ever had. The meat was perfectly tender and flavourful, complemented by an exceptional homemade gravy. The freshly baked bread was wonderfully soft and paired beautifully with the accompanying butter. Every member of staff demonstrated genuine attentiveness, keeping us informed throughout our meal and ensuring every detail was taken care of. The desserts were equally impressive, providing a perfect finish to an outstanding dining experience. I recommend this establishment without hesitation. Exceptional work from the entire team.
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal here. We’re been past the pub plenty of times but never stopped in so I booked it as a pre Christmas treat. The batter on my fish was amazing. Light and crispy and melted in your mouth. The fish itself was almost buttery and the tripled cooked chips were stunning. My husband had the turkey roast and raved about it too. He had a sticky toffee pudding for dessert and I have the chocolate mousse with a cherry sorbet. All the staff were great too. Very friendly and happy to have a chat and share recommendations. We’ll definitely be back.
Loved the food and service. Had a lovely lunch before going for a beautiful walk in Chilterns
Excellent food with very warm and welcoming service. We had a small issue with the steak and our waiter sorted it with no questions or issues whatsoever. The chicken soup in particular which I had for my starter was delicious and hearty. This pub has been local to us for years but has been recently redone and is decorated beautifully and feels very cosy.
A lovely spot for a walk and lunch. Opposite a Norman tower in the village of Fingest. What a great find, we will be back to finish the menu. The fish was very good.
We arrived without a reservation to discover a huge daddy&daughter party had booked the restaurant. Fair play, if I had known how great the food here was I would have done the same,.I cannot fault their choice of location! The free parking behind the pub is a very nice touch. The staff were SUPERB, they let us know about the options from the main kitchen and the wood-fired pizza oven then made sure we had the best table available by offering us a move to a larger table when it became free. The food was equally wonderful. I chose the chipotle buttermilk chicken burger and my wife had the fish and chips. Both were exceptional. I'm only upset that we don't live closer.
Best pub in the Chilterns! Lovely dinning/restaurant area, with great quality food! It will be hard to find a better roast than this! Service is 10/10. Lucky to have this as a local 👌
After a long lockdown I chose The Chequers for my first meal out, and I was hugely impressed. The garden was laid out nicely and there was a good one-way system in the pub for ordering. The food was wonderful especially after months of not eating out. I won't hesitate to come again and would easily recommend. Only thing for me is the website- talks of "Oxfordshire countryside" bug me as Fingest is actually in Bucks... This is my personal issue though which I won't let interfere with a delicious Sunday lunch...!
Great welcome and service. Everyone really friendly. Arrived two minutes before the chef was due a break on a busy Saturday afternoon and we're eating delicious sandwiches only a few moments later. Followed this with some beautiful home made ice-cream. The garden is lovely and the vibe really chilled. Could have stayed a lot longer but we had miles still to travel on our bike ride.
Beautiful location. Excellent service. Quite easily the best roast lunch I’ve ever had in any pub or restaurant. Freshly cooked and incredibly tasty. Well done to the chef and staff. No wonder why there were so many tables reserved.
Great food, great service. We sat in the garden and ordered asparagus risotto and the fish and chips. Delicious. However, the best thing was… their Pimms!!!! Might have been the nicest Pimms I’ve ever had
I absolutely loved this place! They have a veggie option for Sunday roast - nut roast Wellington - which was delicious! Nice craft beer too and a lovely garden. I’ll be back.
Amazing cosy country pub. Small menu but good options. Attentive service and delicious food.
Lovely experience here with my friends and young kids. Food was yum and came quickly, good drinks selection and great service by bar tender and cook/server. Beautiful setting for a Sunday lunch in the sun, a very handy small "playground" means kids were happy while we waited for food. Perfect setting. Would recommend to anyone in the area looking for a chill dining experience.
Really really tasty food in a lovely pub garden and friendly attentive service
Went today a very nice place. Will be back before the weekend is over. Two chaps who served me were exceptional, and the lady who studies in Manc was great. Thank you
I broke down a week ago near to this pub, and as I was on a hunt to find somewhere with WiFi, and a place to charge my phone, all the locals recommended The Chequers pub. Immediately as I arrived, amusingly; they already knew I have broken down. They have instantly welcomed me in, without any expectations of me buying something. Especially since I don’t drink. The atmosphere was warm, and welcoming, and they never made me feel like I was impacting them in any way. The back yard was beautiful, and spacious. Although I can’t eat there myself due to my faith, the food smelt amazing. Thank you to Jason there for allowing me to use your facilities in this time of need. A true gem in the area! Btw, the tea was exceptional!
Great pub hidden away..staff, food and ambience lovely. A wait for our meal but was worth it. We ate at the Michelin star hand and flowers pub in Marlow and I can honestly say I prefered our meal at chequers. Well done!
Really great food and lovely atmosphere with a great beer garden. Pork belly was a highlight. Food came out slightly slow but otherwise a lovely lunch with great service
We had both lunch and dinner over the weekend here. Staff were excellent, food exceptional. We were a party of 10 and all enjoyed our meals. Good value for money too. Can’t fault this pub or staff at all. Well worth a visit
Amazing food, service and overall experience. Wonderful place to enjoy a meal with friends and family.
I couldn’t imagine a better service, really. Food and cocktails are excellent, it is very rare in the area. We had the best beef dish so far and the best service ever in the UK. We were with our little daughter and had a longer wait than usual and they gave us a discount and a very caring service. I could only recommend this place!
It was very quiet this evening. The food was great. The waitress was exceptional. Lovely pace to eat out.
We arrived without a booking on a busy Sunday afternoon. Luckily, a short wait was all we needed to get a table for two next to the fire. We were in the bar area because we had two dogs . The food was delicious. The service was excellent. I am really impressed. Thanks guys .
The bar and snug are completely gorgeous. Food classically prepared. Proper cooking. Padron peppers, coq au vin and creme brûlée were the best I’ve ever tasted. Would highly recommend. Love the dark teal colour scheme. Best pub fires. And they actually lit them for lunch.
Met a friend here today, as it's a half way point for us and will definitely use it as a half way point again. Very cosy and quaint, friendly service, great selection of drinks, and quality food, and Noble Isle handwash/cream in the bathrooms. Not that I judge a place by the quality of the toiletries, but if you know, you know... Also dog friendly.
What a place! This pub is the definition of a traditional pub, such a beautiful space. Very cosy and warming. The food is not bad either, I had the Chequers burger and it was by far the best burger I've ever had in any pub! I will definitely be visitimg again by first chance.
What a breath of fresh air! Having been to some disappointing restaurants recently this place was a pleasant surprise. Amazing service from start to finish, every staff member we came across was engaging and on top of their game. The food offering was varied and seasonal. I had fish and chips and it was some of the best I’ve had in a long time. We will definitely be back. Thank you! ☺️
Had a wonderful lunch here today with my wife. Made to feel very welcome and staff were very attentive
My friend and I had a lovely meal on Thursday evening. The food was delicious, and the service was superb! A very friendly and knowledgeable member of staff looked after us. We didn't catch his name, but we joked about the bread... so he will know who we are! Loved the decor inside and the funky toilet doors. He recommended returning for a few drinks when the weather picks up to enjoy the beautiful views outside, so we will definitely be doing that!
Gorgeous pub in a fantastic location. Sitting outside in the sunshine surrounded by the countryside was absolutely lovely. The staff were fantastic. Really friendly and attentive. The food was high quality. We will definitely be back. Looking forward to trying a pizza night and a Sunday roast.
One of our all-time favourites! The Chequers has everything you may want from a traditional countryside pub. The building itself is super cute, the location in the heart of a picturesque village is perfect, the inside is so cosy thanks to the decor and the lovely roaring fire, and the big secluded garden is unbeatable for summertime refreshments. We visited multiple times, both for food and drinks only, and every time we were served with a smile. The staff are very friendly and professional, the food is delicious and there’s a great selection of drinks at the bar. Great atmosphere every time we went. Highly recommended!
Great pub, really high quality food with superb pastry, lovely hot chocolate torte for dessert, music is however rather intrusive and interrupts the English idyll of this pub somewhat.
A very nice classic British countryside pub with generous sized Sunday lunch. Delightful, if you are in the area and need refreshment or just decent food then visit this pub.
Great food, atmosphere, drink and reasonably priced. The staff were phenomenal, our dog rolled in sheep poo and they even brought us warm water in a bucket to clean him up without us even asking! Service in general was perfection! Highly recommended ❤️
Exceptional pub. Had 2visits to the Hambleden Valley in the last month or so, and stopped here on a long circular walk a few times. Service, staff, venue and food are exceptionally good. Fish and Chips genuinely the best I've ever eaten. Can't wait to return again.
Went for a Sunday roast, so nice to see a pub so busy and the food was delicious. The staff were very attentive and friendly.
I'd booked for 4 of us for Sunday lunch, checking first the vegetarian option, as the smenu on the website is sample only. The vegetable Wellington appealed, so I booked. We had a very nice table in what looked like the extension, and it was very busy. The vegetable Wellington turned out to be lentils and sage, but we didn't have any other options, so we all ordered this. We also had starters and the celeriac soup was very tasty. However, the main course took over 45 mn to come after that. After 30 mn, the waiter informed us that the food was about to come, but I had to ask one more time as it didn't. finally, it did and it was delicious, with Yorkshire pudding and fresh vegetables with a nice gravy, we were also given some cauliflower cheese, not sure if it was a gesture of goodwill or if it was included, but it was very tasty. Towards the end of the meal, the Chef himself came to apologise for the wait and explained that he had restricted space in the kitchen, gesture which we appreciated. My only criticism is that we could have been informed earlier of the delay. the sfaff were very friendly and helpful and we'll definitely go back, providing they have a vegetarian option to our taste, as it seems to be ony one, unfortunately.
Lovely gastro pub, in Fingest, a picturesque Chiltern Village in the Hambledon Valley, close to Henley on Thames. Had the weather been better, the garden at The Chequers would have been ideal for drinks or a pub lunch. We ate indoors, in the restaurant, which was quite busy, as you’d expect on a Sunday afternoon. Good food options on the menu. Roast beef with all the trimmings. Vegetarian Wellington and Eton mess for dessert. Not the cheapest Sunday lunch I’ve ever had, but the food and service were worth the price.
Chequers at Fingest had been on our list for a couple of times when we were @WhitePondFarm at Stonor. Arriving without booking we were kindly welcomed and allthough it was a busy Saturday evening we got a table rather quick. Staff was working hard but never in a hury, it al looked well organised and supervised. Cutlery and dishes spotless and clean, glasses shiny. You get a bottle of water per table on the house, which was very kind. On ordering we got sufficient information on what options and extras were available. We had the Chequers burger and the Super food salad. It didn't take long before being served our order, Drinks were very good (pints of beer and cider). We sat outside. Tables were standing with enough distance from each other to have enough space and privacy for our conversation. There is a large garden with a small playground for the children, a big private car park with overflow car park at the back and more than enough places to sit for small or larger companies. To finish up I had the Eton Mess, and in contradiction to the Eton Mess I just had a couple of days before (there was no Eton in it, just a mess), this one I really enjoyed, it tasted delicious. If you ever are in the area of Henley on Thames/Marlow area of wonder, then sure don't hesitate and go to Chequers in Fingest. Pre-ordering a table is recommended. On our walk we past Chequers the day after we had dinner and stopped for a drink. We can confirm our prior recommendation.
Excellent soup, one of the best I've had for a while. Only loses a star because it was a very small portion and came with no bread. Can you believe that? Otherwise top quality, definitely recommend.
Good traditional fair for a Sunday lunch, not overcomplicated but tasty, best suited for a family and friend's type meal. The suggested wine was excellent. I bought the same wine on the internet. Parking is infinite - well, it's a very big field. Overall, it was a pleasant experience cheering up what was a rather cold and damp day.
Lovely old pub with great food. Word of warning if you are combining a walk with lunch. On the Brakspear Website the pub features three local walks all starting and finishing at the pub which prides itself in being dog friendly and with a large car park. We reserved a table for lunch at 12.30 so arrived at 10.30 for walking prior to lunch. Two very surly members of staff were particularly difficult about us parking up stating that the car park cannot be used before 12.00 !!……. Begs the question why promote the pub as perfect for walkers if they then can’t park up early to walk and return to the pub to buy lunch !!
Very attractive country pub. Welcoming staff. Not busy on a Tuesday lunchtime in January. Has a great garden with an outside bar and pizza oven. Would be a great place to visit in the summer. Only downside - rather expensive. For two of us, for only two courses and a glass of wine each, the bill including service charge came to over £100.
It is ok. The food was fine, overall average to slightly above average with a couple of below average dishes (don't order the chicken nuggets from the kids menu). Service was very slow. We had been there 55 minutes before we received our drinks. Had to go to the bar area a few times to order. I would consider going back on a weekday if we were already in the area but wouldn't travel or go at a weekend (I assume it was particularly slow as they were busy).
We are locals (from Watlington) and absolutely love this pub. It is normally top notch but today felt like hard work from start to finish. I booked a table for 16:00 (booking was accepted) for drinks and a snack as it is normally really busy (which apparently they don't do and was rather rudely "whispered" in front of us...). In anyway, I would only say as feedback, please make sure the pub has understood your requirements ahead of time otherwise it can turn into an epically awkward experience...
Had been one of our favourite pubs, but last visit the food was very disappointing. Ordered the crab risotto to start that lacked any flavour. For main, we had a pie for £21 that came with nothing! We weren't told it was just a lone pie when we ordered. For £21 I would have thought you might get some veg! We also had the mussels, which used to be very light, but was so creamy it was far too rich to eat. Very disappointing.
We visited on a Saturday evening, I chosee the curry which the waiter said was Goat (this wasn't stated on the menu, it just said curry) the waiter said it came with pickle chutney and rice. The curry had a lovely flavour but was definitely lamb not goat, it came with a pile of coleslaw instead of chutney, and rice that had kidney beans it it, none of this went together, what was the chef thinking ?? MY Daughter had fish and chips with triple cooked chips, the batter was completely soggy and not edible, th3 chips were thick pale and soft, not triple cooked at all ! Oh dear my husband had a burger which looked great and wished we had ordered the same ! Very disappointing for the price we paid.
We had a Sunday lunch meal for 5 with 2 dogs. Tried to book on line but also called to ensure we could bring 2 dogs in restaurant but was told there were no dog friendly tables available so I asked if we could book a table outside instead but apparently we could not reserve outside but it would be fine. This was actually not quite true as we spotted at least 2 reserved out door tables. On the day before we went for a walk I asked again if I could reserve a table to be told no. Once we arrived to take a seat outside I was asked if I had reserved a table!! Anyway we were seated had some drinks and most were ready to order. I unfortunately am vegetarian and out of necessity gluten free but the limited menu displayed only one vegetarian main course which was not gluten free. I am used to this and most restaurants of quality go out of their way to try to accommodate me. I don’t expect much but I do expect something. A very grumpy waiter you know who you are, told me I should have pre booked and it was unlikely the chef could do anything. He returned telling me this was the case and could only have a basic salad. My response was in that case I won’t be eating and he is clearly happy for me to sit with nothing to eat whilst my group ate. After that our group made the decision that no one would eat in that case and the restaurant would loose out. We were just about to leave when one of the more professional staff who clearly had been briefed on events , spoke to me and said the chef was willing to put something together he had rice in the fridge, sultanas and cauliflower. After deliberation we agreed and decided to stay. This guy was the only reason we stayed. Food for meat eaters all good. Would I normally pay £32 for rice and cauliflower and a pudding- no. Would I go back - No. it’s so easy to get it right but when a customer is having to deal with an unprofessional staff member, no apologies no discount of any kind, I wouldn’t waste my money. There are lots of other lovely pub restaurants in the area, and customer service is just so so important.
Unfortunately we had a terrible experience. The pub and setting are beautiful. We came to have lunch. We decided to sit in the garden as the weather was nice. There was thumping music playing in the garden and my companion is autistic and struggles with loud music out of context. We were seeking out a table as far from the speaker as possible when the waiter came over and said our food would be cold if we sat at the far tables. It felt like a slightly snarky comment but we let it go and found a table nearer the back door. I then politely asked if it would be possible to turn down the music at the speaker nearest to us and the snapped back reply was “no”. We both wondered if we had misheard as it was not, “no, sorry” or “I’m afraid that’s not possible”, so I asked (again very politely) if it might be possible to turn the music down a little - this is a beautiful country garden and has plenty of atmosphere and ambience on its own, but we appreciate that is just our opinion. The waiter again snapped back “no, that’s just how it is”. There was no need for the absolute rudeness of the tone. We were taken aback. I understand that people don’t always understand neurodiversity but there is no place for rudeness of this sort, especially within a hospitality setting. I am not the sort of person to leave bad reviews either. We are kind and understanding people - and were not being unreasonable by demanding the music was turned off or anything. If we’d been politely told it couldn’t be changed we would have accepted that. It was the manner in which we were spoken to and treated which was so upsetting. We bought the water we had already ordered and left with no lunch but a very sour taste in our mouths.
