The food was homemade and delicious. We ordered the red beans with venison, the beef cheeks, oven-baked ribs, and beef stew. Everything was excellent. The desserts were exquisite, especially the fried milk (a house specialty) and the cheesecake with a sponge cake base. The price was in line with the quality of the food. Alicia and the waiter provided wonderful service. We'll definitely be back!
We were there in May 2025. The drive to La Bolera is breathtaking. We had a table on the terrace with incredible views. We tried the cocido montañés (mountain stew), which was fantastic, fried eggs, venison, and fried black pudding! For dessert, we had a cheese flan, but I can't remember the name. Highly recommended! The owner is a lovely person! We stayed chatting! We'll be back!
We went on a winter Sunday with a prior reservation. Two hours before, I called to ask if we could add two more people, and they didn't have any problem with that. When we arrived, the restaurant was very full, and it took a little while to be served, but that's understandable. We ordered white beans, red beans with venison, mountain stew, entrecote steak, and fried eggs with potatoes. Everything was delicious, homemade food, and generous portions. They leave the casserole dish for you to have as many helpings as you like. The place is very cozy. My only complaints were that we were near the door, and when they opened it, it was very cold, and we had to go outside to use the restroom. When we went to pay, the owner served us, and we had a pleasant conversation. She told us she had a feeling we were going to win the lottery. We bought a ticket, and we were right—we won something! Highly recommended. Excellent value for money. We'll definitely be back.
Wow what a wonderful lunch! First the view from our seats inside was snow on the mountain top, framed by geraniums in the window. The food courses included plates of stew, wild boar, and veal that were all delicious and perfectly seasoned. The cheesecake topped with blueberries was light and at the same time decadent. Most of all we felt welcomed and checked on throughout the meal by our gracious hostess/server. She treated us like we were eating in her house. It was a 10 out of 10 experience.
Lovely place! Really good food, amazing view. And super friendly service! Loved it. I will come definitely back.
Soulful Flavor at La Bolera. Entering this restaurant is like receiving a warm, comforting hug. It's not just a place to eat, but a place where every dish is imbued with the care and attention to detail, using honest ingredients and a skillful touch that's evident from the very first bite. Among so many tempting options, two completely captivated us and left us with a satisfied smile that lasted all day. The Cocido Montañés: A Tribute to Tradition. When you think of a dish that comforts, that nourishes both body and soul, you have to try the Cocido Montañés at this restaurant. It's not just a meal; it's a complete experience. It arrives at the table steaming hot, with that irresistible aroma of a perfectly cooked stew, the result of hours of slow cooking and ingredients that speak for themselves. The beans are cooked to perfection: creamy on the inside with tender skins, blended with the vegetables and the accompanying meats that give it a deep and robust flavor. It's clear this is a dish with history, following a traditional recipe but prepared with modern care. It's the kind of food that makes you close your eyes to savor it more fully, filling you with warmth and leaving you with the feeling of having eaten something real, authentic, and made with respect for the flavors of the land. A true tribute on a plate. The Cheesecake with a Sobao Base: A Masterpiece Finale. And if the stew conquered our palates, the dessert conquered our hearts. The Cheesecake with a Sobao Base is, quite simply, a delight you can't miss. The base isn't your typical crushed biscuit, but a tender and buttery sobao pasiego (a type of sponge cake) that gives it a unique touch, like a sweet memory of afternoon snacks from yesteryear. On top of it, the cheesecake is smooth, silky, and perfectly flavored—neither too sweet nor too light. The contrast between the freshness of the cheese and the rich sweetness of the base is perfect, a balance that can be savored with every spoonful. It's the ideal finishing touch to a meal like this: traditional, yet with a touch of personality that makes it special. It closes the experience on a sweet note and leaves you wanting to return just for this dessert. Overall: An Experience to Repeat. Beyond these two dishes, the atmosphere is welcoming, the service is friendly, and it exudes the essence of a restaurant where what is served and how it is served truly matters. It's the kind of place you'd return to for a special occasion or simply to treat yourself without any fuss. Because here, they don't sell hype; they sell flavor, tradition, and expertise. Highly recommended for those seeking food with soul.
We went to this restaurant because there was no room anywhere in Barcena Mayor. First of all, I'd like to point out that we went on October 12th, a national holiday, and it was therefore very busy. They took a reservation for us, and we had to wait about 25 minutes, but with a beer, it passed quickly. When it was time to sit down, the service was fast, the cocido montañes was SPECTACULAR, and Alicia's friendly service, even though she was very stressed, was a 10/10. We will definitely return; don't ask in Barcena. :)
From the moment you walk through the door, the service is excellent. The food is the best we've tried on this trip to Cantabria! I recommend not missing the cocido montañés and the cheese flan 😋 The atmosphere is very peaceful, and both at night and midday we sat on the terrace and enjoyed the views. It's one of those places where, no matter how far away it is, it's worth the trip.
The feeling at this restaurant is indescribable. From the moment you arrive, you feel right at home. The owner treats you like family. The waiters are incredibly friendly, always helpful, and make choosing easy. My whole family was delighted with the homemade food. Choose whatever you like because everything is delicious. The homemade desserts are just as amazing. The views are another plus. Thank you for this unforgettable experience.
The best dining experience I've had during my trip to Cantabria. I wish I could give them more stars because they deserve them! I went because a friend from there considers it one of her favorite places, and now I understand why. Alicia is charming, a tremendous professional, one of the few remaining; and her sister is an excellent cook. From the first moment, the service was magnificent, the views from the terrace are gorgeous, and the food is truly on another level. High-quality products, much of it picked from their own garden, delicious meats, and homemade desserts that are a delight. Plus, the road to their location offers beautiful scenery to enjoy. We tried the homemade sangria, the blood sausage, the garden salad, a varied plate of cured meats, Russian salad, and squid. Roasted goat and Tudanca beef accompanied by pepper sauce. For dessert, there was cheese flan, cheesecake, and a dessert made by Alicia made with fried milk, almonds, and other toppings that was delicious. To say that each dish was spectacular is perhaps an understatement, and the prices were more than reasonable for the entire experience of visiting this restaurant. I will definitely return on my next visit to the north; and it's a place I've already recommended to other acquaintances because it has become a must-see when traveling through Cantabria. Thank you for everything!
I ate all my meals here while I stayed at La Posada. Friendly staff, nice views and a few tasty options for vegetarians. I recommend it !!!
Very nice pleace to visit! And Very good and helpfull staff. ;)
An amazing place. Fab mountainside views. Food very varied and delicious at very fair prices. Please also use the old man artisan wood carver in the village - walking sticks, spoons and much more in his little workshop. The road up has thrilling bends but is totally safe, wide enough and with barriers. Thank you from the Devon UK visitors.
Ask Alicia for hints and do what she says.
Superb food at very low prices! We had "cocido montañes" (traditional chickpea stew) and "judia roja con venado" (red beans and venison stew) and could not stop until we reached the bottom of the pot, which is a lot to say, since the portions are MASSIVE. From a single pot 2 to 3 people could perfectly satisfied their appetites, but the main dishes are great so you cannot stop there. Getting to the place by car is quite an adventure, uphill through winding road, but it is definitely well worth it!
We booked because we were going to be touring the area, and it didn't disappoint. The waiter who served us was super friendly. The food was delicious. The red beans and the entrecote were standouts; it was so exquisite it tasted more like a sirloin steak. It melted in your mouth. We'll definitely be back.
