Don Jose's is a long-standing neighborhood favorite known for its generous portions, reasonable prices, and friendly staff. Customers rave about Taco Tuesday and the raspberry margaritas. Some find the food Americanized and the rice needs improvement.
Tip: Go for the lunch specials or Margarita Mondays for excellent value.

I have been going to Don Jose's since they opened in 1966. Fran was our waitress for many years. We started going after our first born son was a couple of months old. Love the guacamole dip with extra guacamole. I have now taken all 14 of my grandchildren and they all love it. Rogue had been our waiter many times now and always takes good care of us.
Food is outstanding, drinks are so good. The customer service is real customer service it's a real family atmosphere, the bartender is on his game. My family has been coming to Don Jose for many years. Always a comfortable place to visit.
Don Jose's on Adam's and Magnolia has always been my favorite of all Don Jose's locations. It still is. I go to lunch with my son after school about 3-4 times a week. Friendliest staff ever. Cindy is my favorite waitress. She always enjoys seeing us there and makes us feel welcome. I would recommend this location to anyone who loves Mexican food.
Been going here since I was in a high chair (I’m 35 now) and some of the wait staff has known me for just as long. I order the same thing every time and I always eat waaay too many chips and salsa! 😂🙈 This couldn’t be more of an amazing family place to frequent. (But I do hear their happy hour is amazing too!)
Great local Mexican restaurant for unpretentious diners, plates are filled, chips n salsa at every table and take your time eating. Bar area generally filled late afternoon. A Senior favorite.
Don José's has been there like forever, with good reason as they consistently serve high quality food. First rate complementary chips and salsa. My recommendation is to go by during lunch during the week when there are lunch plates for $12.
Been a Don Jose's since I was 5 when they had the Lake Elsinore location, they sadly closed that location like many were forced to during COVID. I recently moved to Orange County and had to go try this location. I brought my girlfriend and we had some drinks, we got a nice appetizer, she got enchiladas and I got the flautas. It was like I never left home, the meals were served just how they used to be, with the same great taste and atmosphere. See you next time!
Celebrated dad’s birthday and it was a great time. Service was attentive and helpful. Have always enjoyed coming here.
I've been eating here for almost 40 years. My wife has been eating here since it opened. The food is awesome, the prices are reasonable and the staff is super-friendly. Even with Covid-19, we eat food from here 3 to 4 times a month. I'm looking forward to a full opening so we can enjoy eating there, rather than doing takeout.
Really like Don Jose's, reminds me of a quaint family run Mexican restaurant I used to go to many years ago. The food is awesome and authentic and reasonably priced. Service is also great, drinks are always full and chips are always replenished, love their salsa! All in all it's a great affordable authentic Mexican restaurant and bar.
Don Jose Mexican is a great Mexican place. The food is first class. They do it right at this Don Jose. They can get a little busy but it it most time pretty fast. The servings crew do a great job. The place is very clean. The restrooms where clean too. I always stop and eat here when I Travel through town. They have parking too. Stop in and give them a try you'll be happy. Enjoy them soon.
We had a great experience overall. Food, service, ambiance, price, selection were all top!
Not a big Mexican food eater. I do enjoy coming here. Food is good and atmosphere is fun. All the bartenders are fantastic. Always see someone I know in there eating. Definitely recommend.
My family and I have been dining at Don Jose's for 40+ yrs. The look has changed slightly, but the food has stayed the same. Delicious and filling. Only problem, it's very easy to eat too much. Nothing a little nap won't cure tho. Well worth it.
We had been a regular at their Lake Elsinore location (lost to Covid,) always stop in Riverside when in town but didn’t realize we had one close! This was a Door Dash delivery and it was accurate, hot and well packaged. They have a very generously proportioned chicken fajita quesadilla. So delicious! Love their house salsa too. Looks tomatoey but is chock full of fresh veggies and has a great spicy bite! You will definitely get plenty of delicious food when you choose here.
I've been coming to Don Jose's for over 40 years. The food is excellent even though the dining service was not open when I was there. I just called in order my favorites and picked it up. I love the enchilada plates and the enchilada sauce. I'm a pescatarian but I still enjoy eating the tacos with beans
Love this place. The chips and salsa never disappoint and the Cadillac margaritas are probably the best I've ever had. The carne asada burrito is excellent. The steak is always tender with little to no fat. Service is always great, long time workers are always a great sign.
I have been going to Don Jose's for at least 35 years. I raised 4 kids and every Friday night they had a choice between Zoobies, Lee's Chinese and Don Jose's. They ALWAYS picked Don Jose's and we would have a great time! After 35+ years the restaurant is as great as it was so long ago. Hope everyone will continue to support our favorite restaurant!
Great food and great service. Recently remodeled. Get the guacamole (large - c'mooon :)) and a Mercedes Margarita (their version of a Cadillac with Grand Marnier). They're nice and strong and delicious. Great combos also - they've got a large menu with any combo you'd want. Update: Recently re-modeled during the pandemic - beautiful inside and outdoor seating available as well.
Food was great and especially loved the albondigas soup! We will be back soon.
I had not been to this restaurant in almost 25 years. We moved out of state, and just returned on vacation. I couldn't believe it was still in existence! The salsa was exactly as it used to be. The food was delicious; the only change was the decor. Highly recommend this 52 year old restaurant!
Went on a Sunday afternoon family lunch. The food was so good, the margs were super tasty, service quick when though they were busy. Chips never got empty, drinks never dry, I wish they didn't close the one in my town.
Went for taco tuesday in the cantina, great food, we had chicken tacos and carnitas tacos, chips and salsa great margaritas, waiter was awesome. I've eaten in the restuarant before. This was first time for taco tuesday, will definitely go again.
Don Jose's has ALWAYS been my favorite spot for a delicious dinner. I have been coming to this location for over 30 years and they never disappoint. I love their fresh chips and salsa, their delicious tacos, but what I love the most are their enchiladas. Delicious!!
Attentive staff, great tasting cocktails. First visit here w friends. New to the area and this has definitely become one of my favorite places to visit. This place has staff members who've worked here for decades. That's a huge deal in this day and age. It shows the place puts value on its staff and their hard word and dedication. Stop in here. Food, the vibe and staff are something to experience.
Don Jose's in Huntington Beach is by far my most favorite stop for Mexican food anywhere. While it is about an hour and a half from our home, we have frequented this spot because of the amazing food, exceptional service and amazingly reasonable pricing. Patty has been our server several times and has always been pleasant to have! We have also never had to wait to eat here - even on the weekend! The portions are also very generous - I highly recommended this establishment.
Absolutely a wonderful experience! Family get together. We are from Ohio.
Fantastic, even after 40 years! We came back for a visit and found one of our old favorites still serving fantastic dishes.
So happy this Don Jose exists! After many of the Don Jose’s in the area closed or turned into Rodrigo’s, it was very disappointing because this was a restaurant my family and I went to all the time growing up. This location is clean and has a great atmosphere. I like that the Cantina is always lively. We were seated immediately and our food was delicious and pretty affordable.
Well, I'm Sicilian if my last name didn't give it away already, but don't get me wrong I love my Italian food but I have to have my Mexican food. In my favorite place to go is Don Jose's Mexican restaurant where I get the same thing every single time I go. That would be three cheese enchiladas which comes with rice and beans of course and I have to have sour cream and fresh guacamole and a strawberry margarita with lots of salt on the rim and I I'm in heaven on Earth. And I can't forget to mention that I do pour a whole entire bowl of salsa on top of my enchiladas rice and beans. That was my Father's Day dinner from my sweet friend Kathy. We had a great time from beginning to end. We went to the John Jose's in Huntington Beach and I believe it was off of Adams avenue. We were just out in fountain valley to check out prehistoric pets one of my favorite places and we got hungry. I had both of my dogs with me and when we walked into Don Jose's they just looked down and said oh how cute and found us a booth and didn't say another word about our dogs other than they were very well-mannered. Which made the experience even better when I don't have any problems with my dogs being with me. They're both small. One is a maltipoo terrier, and his name is Brody. And the other is a Chihuahua and her name is Lucy. All in all it was a wonderful day for Father's Day with Don Jose. Hey I'm a poet and didn't even know it. Till next time, laters, Anthony
First time here and this place was really good. We went for lunch and I ordered a raspberry margarita which was on the lunch specials and it didn't disappoint. My husband ordered the tamale and cheese enchilada and there was plenty of food on his plate. I ordered the flautas and they were good. The rice and beans do not taste like every other restaurants out there, they are so much better! We will definitely be back!
I was so happy to find you. It's been many years and I thought you were long gone. The food was fabulous just like I remember. Service and atmosphere superb. Only wish you had one in Nevada where I live.
Been going to this restaurant since the mid-1970’s. It’s almost exactly the same. Food is great, prices are great. I’ve moved away from here but come here every time I visit.
If you want to spend $16 because you have to buy food as well quesadilla and a margarita comes out to about 16 bucks and that's how you're going to get out of there with a margarita it's not iced and there's no salt channel in carrying case a front seat tray and a sippy straw a piece of tape over the top so it doesn't spill in your front seat me and driving home but I only made it to the end of the parking lot before I finished my turned around and went and got another one thank you give it a try.
Gabriel is wonderful he takes very good care of us! We've been coming here a very long time it's still a family-owned restaurant! Food is great!
Just for the haters, the staff is Latino based. I've been coming here for decades with family. With that said, there is not a better restaurant in California or any other state I've been to then Don Jose's. They are the father restaurant of four others La capilla in La Palma is also my favorite. I recommend the grilled steak and chicken wet burrito. Happy hour is amazing, the drinks are always great. It is a fun and loving atmosphere always and to say that there are no Latinos in the restaurant or in the staff is just false hatred.
My brother and I stopped for a nice lunch and a quiet place to talk and catch up. We were greeted and seated right away, which was so nice. The lunch menu had great options, and there are specials on the regular menu priced only a small amount more. Our food came out promptly and was absolutely wonderful . All this said, I was disappointed that our drinks (iced tea) were not filled after 1 refil. We came to have a relaxing, quiet lunch but felt pushed to get out. When either of us paused to talk they wanted to take our plates. The restraunt was not busy, there were no lines for people waiting to be seated, if we wanted FAST FOOD there is plenty of that around but we wanted to relax and spend some time together. I was disappointed that once the check was dropped at the table, we were ignored. UNDERSTAND THIS - The word "restaurant" originates from the French word "restaurer," meaning "to restore" or "to refresh,"
We love Don Jose’s! We have been coming here for years. We especially love the homemade blue cheese dressing!!! My kids make me take them every time they come and visit! Great Margaritas too!! Can’t go wrong eating here! Always friendly with amazing food
Great bartenders and people as always ..tamale could be healthier. Chips were great.
This visit brought back good childhood memories. We used to visit the restaurants in Torrance and the one in Palos Verdes. The food is delicious and lunch time was a great time to go. You'll love it!
This restaurant is amazing their food is great their service is great they're to go orders are great They aren't cheap or short on chips or salsa. I recommend eating here They have wonderful lunch specials and wonderful cocktails. Thank you Don Jose for being such a great part of Huntington Beach.
My mom and I have been going here for years. I often go with friends as well... The food is absolutely delicious and the staff are all very friendly. They will always ask me about my mom when I go without her and always ask her how she is when she's with me. It's a really great place to eat and the complimentary chips and salsa are amazing lol. I highly recommend going here if and when you're in the mood for some really good Mexican food.
If you want more food than you can eat at a reasonable price, this is the place and you will be very satisfied.
Food is very good. Rice could be a lot better and if they shredded their own cheese instead of using bag cheese. Oh my God it would be off the hook
Been going there for years. Like there food and they have a good lunch special.
You can never go wrong at Don Jose’s! I grew up here eating at Don Jose’s and we would go weekly, but we moved to Temecula and would eat at their Location in Lake Elsinore, but unfortunately for us, Covid ended up keeping them from keeping it opened. We now drive periodically down from Temecula to enjoy a day eating the best Chips and Salas, and the most wonderful Tacos and Chicken Enchiladas. If I could have them back out our way, that would be our wish.
Great food and wonderful server went extra mile to make sure we had everything we needed to have a great experience. That said a person who needs help with guest service looked to be the female manger to almost run over a elderly lady that was trying to move to get her walker. Almost knocked the lady down instead of walking around the table a give plenty of room so not to injure people.
Classic American Mexican food. Been around for ages..my wife's favorite haunt as a child and we come back for nostalgia. Relatively inexpensive food and cheap drinks... Great chips and salsa, who could ask for more?
Was very concerned because other Don Jose's became Rodrigo's (no bueno!) Was relieved to discover this is the Original location, and is not likely going anywhere soon 👍🤷 2/23/25 WOW! Had most expensive thing on menu... New York Steak, enchilada, rice, beans, and nice simple salad. Good Stuff! One of the Super Best restaurant values I've Ever experienced, at only twenty-six and a half bucks! Keep up the great work DJ
Don Jose's Taco Tuesday is a culinary fiesta that eclipses expectations. Every bite of their meticulously crafted tacos is a symphony of flavors – from succulent carnitas to tantalizing al pastor. The handmade tortillas are a testament to authenticity, creating a delightful texture. The vibrant salsas and toppings further amplify the experience, ensuring each taco is a masterpiece. The staff, adorned in traditional attire, radiates warm hospitality, making Taco Tuesday at Don Jose not just a meal but an extraordinary celebration of Mexican cuisine. Prepare for a taste sensation that transcends the ordinary – Don Jose is the epitome of taco perfection.
Ok customer service but it was very busy today so it's completely understandable. I had the chefs special for 15$ and it was arguably enough for two and delicious. It was however semi crowded, and social distancing was not exactly in effect if this is something important to you. Otherwise look forward to great decor and salsa.
Pretty great mexican food at good price. Ordered the fish tacos and the crab enchiladas.....super yummy. On another order they forgot my sour cream on the side for my beef tacos but Manager made good on it the next day. Thanks for your professionalism. I will be returning.
Good Mexican food. Chips were fresh & warm. Beef tacos were deep fried...no pre-made fake shells here. Brewed ice tea was delicious. Had karaoke next door in their bar that we could hear which made for a lively environment but it wasn't too loud. Server was friendly and professional. I would go back.
The atmosphere was quite nice. The salsa that went along with the chips wasn't as tasty as I'd would have liked. It was spicy though. The main meal was very satisfying. The dark beer was very good.
It's reliably good Mexican food. Personally, I think the prices are a bit high for what you get. But if you go at lunch time there are specials that are priced lower. This evening everyone in our party enjoyed their food and our waitress was good. Very efficient and just the right amount of friendly! It's a casual atmosphere. Comfortable, but at times like this evening it can be pretty noisy.
Always great food! Hubby has always LOVED their quesadillas! The dining experience during this pandemic was great. They had very spacious seating and all staff wore masks. I felt comfortable enough dining out there as there are other local places that don't go by the law during these times.
Their recent remodel modernized the atmosphere, but I must say that I and my family enjoyed the old motif of classic movie B&W photos. The food, however, is wonderful, large portions, and not neuvo. The dining wear has changed, but the food remains the same, and that is a good thing! The booths are comfortable, but not spacious for parties of 4. They have a room in the back for larger parties, and parties in general. There is also seating in the bar area that is adjustable for larger parties too, but it's a more active area and has a big screen TV. All in all, it's very good, and they do aim to please.
We’ve been coming here for 4 decades. Today was just okay for me taste wise. The whole party said “just okay”. Flavoring was a bit off. Chips and salsa are always delicious. Prices are mediocre. Service is good. Very clean.
Don Jose's Mexican restaurant in Huntington Beach has been in business since 1966. An Iconic Restaurant in the Adams and Magnolia area of Huntington Beach. I personally enjoy this place. Drinks are well prepared, the food is great, and quick to your table, and any of the oversized Wet Burritos are awesome. Pricing is fair a$ well. Not over the top as seems to be the case with a lot of other Mexican restaurants in HB.
Usually very busy at lunch time. You get seated quickly. Food is really good, cocktails are kind of weak. Comfortable atmosphere.
Popped in without a reservation on Friday evening and we were seated right away. Outdoor & indoor seating available. Staff kept every other booth empty to create distance between parties. Strong margaritas (the best kind) and sizzling fajitas. Took a bit to get our food, the waiter didn't put our order in correctly. Took a star off because we sat around for a while before the waiter told us & checked on us. But once the food came I was over it right away. The fajitas were very tasty & worth the wait. If you are in the area & craving good Mexican food go check this place out. It doesn't disappoint.
Sunday night dinner not too busy and we got our food quickly. The food was pretty good. The telling sign of a good Mexican restaurant is the chips and salsa. They were average so you can guess what I mean by pretty good. Prices were fair for large quantities of food. If we are in the area we would come again.
Service was great and everyone was friendly. Drinks were decent. Food was ok. I liked the guacamole as it tasted like it did not have any filler, just avocado, tomatoes, onions, cilantro, spices. I ordered the crab enchiladas, the sauce was just ok and i didn't love the spices. I thought the enchiladas needed sauce and cheese and onions and seasoning inside. The rice and beans were just ok.
The staff is all amazing. Food is super average, atmosphere is old rundown neighborhood Mexican food restaurant. I was hoping to like it more but I felt it was really pricey for the lower quality of the food. Starting with the chips and salsa...salsa was bland watery pico de Gallo basically and the chips are definitely not fresh. They seem home made but like they make them in large batches every few days...not good and something most other places do fairly well. The margaritas were again just a cheap mixer and low end well tequila. Too syrupy for my taste. Then 21.95 for a bland chicken enchilada, and even more bland chicken tamale with a cheap enchilada sauce on it. Spanish rice was the worst I ever had and was just mushy like it was thawed and microwaved from a day before. The whole thing tasted like frozen tv dinner. I've literally reheated leftovers from El ranchito 2 days later that had better texture. Maybe it was an off day but I won't be going back and dropping $75 on dinner a drink and tip for 2 here again when there's much better quality Mexican food everywhere in so cal.
I think this place gets it's popularity from the 50's plus diners because it's been here so freaking long. Prices compared to other Mexican restaurants in the area are steep and there's not much you can do to Mexican dishes that make them taste all that better. They did a bunch of renovations after 30 years so I think they are trying to make their money back quickly. People are friendly but the neighborhood provides better for less.
Decided last minute to look for a Brunch location, found it here. Place is clean, food was good, but when you say Champaign brunch and give me a glass the size of a shotglass "no joke" and after 4 refills, then say SORRY we have a limit, no place on your menu states that, the unfriendly server states "well does it say bottomless on the sign outside, hanging from the side of the building? Lol, talk about bait and switch. Gotta say the most helpful guy was the busboy, he should have got the tip. Bottomline is this, if it's not bottomless or you have a limit then say so. Also a little more friendly service from the server would have been appreciated.
The food is very good and tasty 😋 But the only thing that made me give 3 stars, is that if is a Mexican restaurant, all the plates should include TORTILLAS. And if your order is to go, they should include utensils and napkins with your order. The only plates that don’t include tortillas, should be the burritos, enchiladas, quesadillas etc etc. other than that, everything should include them.
First Visit—host friendly, seated quickly, older man slams chips and salsa on the table and storms off —Wow. Roque—Server excellent—great spirit, kind, friendly, attentive👏 Inside is comfortable, there’s a bar with tables on that section as well. Parking seemed fine-got a spot right at the front door at 7pm. Food—mediocre—Special Quesadilla with Ground Beef was bland, with yellow, rubbery cheese rather than the usual creamy white cheese at most restaurants. Ground beef was greasy. Guac was ok—not great, glad I didn’t opt to but the Guac App. The Chips were good, but the Salsa tasted basic—like a mild Pace Salsa. The Flan was terrible—very lite(not thick and creamy) and tasteless. Too bad I opted to get that fit $7. All in all there’s way better Mexican in OC. So I cannot recommend this place!
Ambience is your standard restaurant with booths and stand alone tables for larger groups. Food - More tex mex / Americanized (Lots of cheese). Not horrible, but nothing to write home about. I ordered the Mexican Dinner w/Tortilla soup. Soup was flavorful but not much tortilla, and was more of a chicken noodle flavor with a couple chips thrown in. The chile Verde was ok but the pork wasn't as tender as I thought. The shrimp Taco was a good sized breaded shrimp. We ordered guacamole for the table which also came with salsa and both were just OK. I had a strawberry marg with was mostly ice and didn't have much kick. My partner said her first marg was strong, but the second was lacking. While it was packed full of people, I doubt I would go back myself. It felt more catered to "American" tastebuds and I have had more flavorful similar selections at mom and pop places. Lots of Parking was a good thing!
This is not Mexican food, it's the kind of food you find at a burger shack that sells tacos too. Stuffed with iceberg lettuce and oversalted. Bartender barely cares enough to take our order. Tacos were good enough to finish but we couldn't finish the rice as it tastes like reheated Uncle Ben's. Chips and salsa filled us up thankfully. Lived in HB for a decade, was always curious, but once was enough.
When it comes to Mexican food, there's a plethora of choices out there. I wouldn't put Don Jose's on the list. I hate writing bad reviews as it might be an off night in the kitchen or other variables at play but when you're spending $80 on dinner for two, you expect better. Before I describe our culinary experience, be forewarned, it's very, very LOUD in the restaurant. We went on karaoke night so the joint was jumping. We were a party of 8 and had to scream at each other in order to have a conversation during dinner. The food was subpar. My fiancee had taquitos and I had shrimp tacos. Both meals came with rice and beans. They put celery and onions in the rice which I picked out. Save that combo for stuffing not Mexican rice. The best Mexican rice, by the way, is at Taco Grill in Huntington Beach. The food just didn't have any flavor. Very bland. We went into the bar afterwards to check out the karaoke for about an hour. There were some good singers and interesting people watching. We watched a drunk guy at the bar get thrown out for messing with the kj's equipment several times. The cops were waiting for him outside. Very wise on the manager's part to not bring them in the bar and cause a scene. Overall it was a great date night and good times with friends. Don't come here for the culinary experience, though.
Food was great, service was not so great. I have been going here for years and took my wife there for her Birthday. We waited almost 45 minutes for our food then almost a hour for our check. My wife did not even get a Happy Birthday or anything and I told them in the beginning and our waiter it was her Birthday. Say the least, we love the food but not likely to celebrate anymore Birthdays.
Don Jose's menu is one of the best! Food is always fresh, in large portions and delicious; and I mean always! BUT THIS LOCATION WAS HORRIBLE!! Ambiance isn't anything like the others I've been to; no low lighting, no music, and seating is so close and tight. Waitress was not personable, double charged me for a $13 Margarita, and the Manager had only "sorry" to say; no discount or "come back soon". So don't go or go back soon.
Wanna know if a Mexican restaurant is good? Look to see if other Latinos eat there. As soon as I walked in I knew I was in trouble. My friend really wanted to go there so I played along. It's OK, i dont need authentic Mexican food to enjoy a restaurant. Atmosphere, all non-hispanic, not a Hispanic person around, not even the staff, but I powered through. The place seems old and dated, not very appealing and the bathrooms were the same. They have all the basic combos but there is about a $7 price difference if you want both rice and beans. Lower amount if you choose rice or beans. I dont know a Mexican restaurant that charges more for both rice AND beans. We ordered off the Lesser menu and ordered a side of rice for $5 to share. It was a large portion and saved us $$. I ordered the chili verde pork burrito. Looked OK but the sauce was sour. Our server was nowhere to be found Soni couldn't complain. She finally"stopped" by to see how we were doing. My friend said fine, I looked up to talk to tell the server about my food, and she ran off without looking at me. I proceeded to just eat the inside of my burritos that was bland pork. I stopped eating realizing maybe the sauce went bad and I didn't want to get sick. When the server finally came by I told her the sauce was sour. Her response, "The green sauce is different than the red sauce" and mumbled something about tomatillo. I am aware it is made with tomatilo, but doesn't mean it should taste sour. That's all that was said.
This was one our favorite places. Today we left after watching other people get chips and salsa that came in after us. Even after taking our order they still didn't bring the chips and salsa. You have to understand that if we have to complain about this we don't want any of the food.
I don't normaly leave negative reviews but this was so bad, I just had to. I should have known as soon as they brought out the salsa that this restaurant was not up to par. But I still gave it a chance as they have a really extensive menu. I ordered an enchilada & ground beef taco combination plate and when it came out it looked really good UNTILL I TASTED IT!. OMG! worse enchilada sauce I ever had, it was so thick n gooey and they doused the whole plate in it. Plus it had a weird taste almost like spaghetti sauce.. my enchilada might as well been lasagna. The rice wasn't cooked all the way and definitely not made the traditional way with tomatoes sauce, instead it was overly flavored as if they used some kind of taco seasoning.. my ground beef taco was all soggy. It was literally dripping everywhere.. i don't know where you get watery ground beef from but it was horrible.. if you are looking for an authentic Mexican restaurant, Don Jose's is NOT the one. Plus it is over priced! Dont waste your money like I did!.. I promise, you can find better Mexican food in the Taco Bell drive thru.
Came here with a group. Ordered Fiesta patter. Food was hard to eat. Was stuck to plate from cheese glued chips to plate. As for entees, poor presentation, flavorless and food just a mush mixed together. Server Gabriel rarely checked on us for drink refills or to remove empty dishes. Not a good experience to write about.
Our families have been coming here since the late 1980s. It's a shame that we have to go to other restaurants to get a fair price when this was our family restaurant. Two cheese enchiladas rice and beans should never cost anywhere near twenty dollars with tax..... Oh well. It's not just our family. Who said the price has gone up and quality has gone down.
I asked the waiter what's the spiciest/hot chicken item you have. He said nothing here is spicy or hot. I laughed and told him I thought so based on the bland salsa. The margargita's use a mix. I should have left and went to Mona Lisa but we thought we'd give it a try based on other reviews. I had the chipotle shrimp taco plate (substituted with chicken) with rice and beans. The plate was extremely bland and lacked flavor. Margarita's are normally my go to, these were meh and gave me an awful headache the next day. Never again.
The staff there is usually rude. Theres some good employees shuffled into the mix. The food is not good like it used to be. The restaurant is dirty. But the dirty looks my girlfriend and i get from the staff is unexcusable. Its not just me assuming either. I know for a fact they got something against us for whatever reason. But that has made it to where we will never eat there again and will never recommend them to anyone. I even ordered take out to avoid the rude service but still got rude staff.

NOT FAMILY FRIENDLY! Have been coming to this restaurant for decades - since I was a kid - and came here today with my mom, a friend, and our kids. My friend brought her 2 year old daughter and her VERY new newborn. She had her hands full. Her daughter gets nervous and started crying in the restaurant when we got to our table. My friend was trying to help her daughter to calm down when a worker (manager?), Patty, approached her and in an EXTREMELY rude tone, said “Can you take your daughter outside? I’m getting complaints.” We had literally just sat down. My friend was embarrassed and trying to pick up her daughter and scoot out of the booth to take her out, when Patty came back only seconds later and in an even MORE rude tone said “THE DOOR IS OVER THERE!” and pointed. I was SHOCKED. My friend was so embarrassed and was trying not to cry, while also trying to console her toddler. My mom and I were disgusted by Patty’s treatment of a struggling, newly postpartum mother, so we got the kids and left to take our business elsewhere. We hadn’t even been in the restaurant 10 minutes yet. Once we got the kids outside, my friend was really shaken up, and went back in to speak with Patty and tell her that she could’ve handled that differently. Patty’s response was “I hope you can fix your attitude.” What??? None of us were rude or had an attitude. How dare she shame a young mother like that. We’ve been coming here for decades, but we will never be coming back. Beware - this restaurant doesn’t tolerate kids being kids and will embarrass and shame young moms.
Been going to Don Jose Mexican Restaurant off and on for years. Usually great food and great service. Went 2 nights ago and decided to leave a review which I do very rarely. The food was almost inetable. The shredded beef taco was similar to a worn out dishrag. Disgusting. The cheese in the chile rellano was so rubbery it stretched out 10" above my plate. Equally disgusting. The service was great as usual and we shared our experience with our server. She apologized and mentioned something about a new supplier. When paying, the lady at the register was not friendly at all. Not sure what is going on with this landmark Huntington Beach Restaurant but we will never go again .... very disappointed.
