Opinions de Joan's on Third Los Angeles
Joan’s on Third never disappoints! I love that they’ve kept the old menu—some classics should never change. The chicken tarragon (my absolute favorite!) is just as delicious as ever. It’s amazing that after more than 20 years, they’ve managed to maintain such great quality and freshness. The space feels so much more open now, with a spacious indoor-outdoor setup that’s perfect for everything from a coffee break to lunch with friends. Always a Los Angeles staple in my book!
Joan’s on Third is one of those timeless Los Angeles spots that feels both effortlessly chic and comfortingly familiar. The moment you walk in, you’re greeted by a warm buzz — people chatting over cappuccinos, the scent of freshly baked pastries, and a display of gourmet salads and sandwiches that look straight out of a magazine. The menu has something for everyone — from the famous short rib sandwich (rich and tender) to the truffle egg toast and perfectly crisp fries. Even their iced vanilla latte feels special here, smooth and subtly sweet. The desserts and bakery section are impossible to ignore — their cookies and cupcakes are some of the best in LA. What makes Joan’s shine, though, is the ambiance: airy, casual, and filled with natural light, yet still feels like a bit of an LA scene. It’s a perfect spot for brunch with friends, a solo coffee, or to pick up something fancy for a picnic. Overall, Joan’s on Third is that rare mix of cozy and elevated — a must-visit if you love great food with a touch of everyday glamour. And I thought delis usually is small and narrow. Here is so spacious with all types of sitting area, which makes feel more comfortable to stay here a whole afternoon. Sometimes just holding a cup of coffee and sitting by the window to watch people passing by.
Food 4.9/5 Service: 4.5/5 Value: 4.7/5 The worst part about Joan’s is that it’s really hard to park but street parking is definitely possible. We had two sandwiches and honestly both were great. I had the braised short rib sandwich and wow, truly incredible. As someone who has tried to make braised short ribs before, I know how hard it is to make it as tasty as this sandwich was. The short ribs were delicate yet packed with flavor. When paired with the gooey cheese and the delicate greens and the slightly sweet pickles, it was truly an incredible experience. It is kind of pricey for a sandwich but definitely worth it.
Shortrib sandwich was really as good as they say. The turkey club did not disappoint either. Happy to have experienced what all the hype was about. Would love to come back for so much more that was offered.
meeting friends for lunch and coffee -This place makes me happy! All the staff are so warm, nice and helpful. The food is absolutely delicious! their breakfast and Lunch menu has so many selections and all so flavorful. Tried the Chinese chicken salad WOW!
Dropped in for an impromptu brunch. What a cute place! Counter style ordering, and prompt service. Amazing salads and take out and the granola and breakfast burrito were divine! Will def come back !!
So unique, so amazing! I came to Joan’s for lunch, after hearing great things about their new burgers. After looking through their sit down menu, we tried out their lunch selection, which was delicious. My chili dog was much larger than expected, and was an amazing blend of rich brioche bread, tender sausage, and savory chili. As for the burger, the beef was great quality! Their pickles are made in-house, as well as their house sauce, which was evident in their fresh, unique taste. However, if there is one thing you order, try the delicious onion strings. They are so crispy, perfectly battered, and sweetly onion flavored. Definitely a slept on treat. I was highly impressed by the sheer variety of items available at this location. From grab-and-go deli items, to wines, to desserts and sweets, to restaurant-style hot meals, there is something for everyone! Joan, the owner, is incredibly friendly. She talked to us about the menu, and even recommended some of her favorites. It’s truly refreshing to see a business owner so invested in their product. In fact, the entire staff was outstandingly kind, especially the kitchen crew, which deserves all the recognition! Highly recommend! 😼
Joan’s on Third has the best Chinese chicken salad! I’ve ordered their short rib sandwich too- which is also delicious. I’ve never been to one in person, but this weekend I ventured my way here. I was surprised to see they had breakfast options! Although we didn’t order it, their corned beef hash looked amazing. They also have so many goodies. It was like Disneyland inside. They had ice cream, a dessert area, snacks, candies, and food options in the cases like quiches, lasagna, meatballs… They have open seating. It was crowded on a Saturday but the service was great and the food came out quick and hot. Definitely need to check this place out if you’re in the area and want a delicious bite to eat!
Joan’s on Third is a collage of deli, coffee shop, bakery, wine shop, and gift store - all nestled quaintly on 3rd Street. We went for a relatively quick breakfast: one of us had an omelette and the other a coffee and slice of zucchini bread. It’s a great place for a quick breakfast or lunch, or something on the go.
Deli Sandwich is so Good!! chinese chicken salad is good too , overall 10/10 😋😋
I love this place! Good food. Tons of options. Clean. Tons of seating. Outdoor as well. Quick and easy. Amenities like a water stand and sinks outside of the bathroom to wash your hands, etc. very thoughtful layout. All sorts of drinks and snacks and pastries in addition to a breakfast menu and lunch options that are ready made including hot and cold items.

Parking: 1/5 Street meter parking only but I guess that's normal for LA Food: 4/5 Food was great and coffee was decent. I got the egg basket omelette with mushroom, asparagus and goat cheese and the egg was soo fluffy and soft. They put just the right amount of mixture inside so the flavours were balanced. Got the iced latte with oat milk and there was some coffee taste but not it wasn't strong enough. Would get another drink here next time

Food: 9/10 I was able to try the chicken Chinese salad and it was really good!! Since it was given to me I’m not sure of the price, I would say this salad should be less than $12 in my opinion. I received a good portion and the cookie is huge! I’ll be saving it for my kids. Since the food was provided to my job I cannot speak on service or the ambiance of the store. I wouldn’t mind stopping by in the near future and trying more of the food. Everyone is always raving about this place!
Love love love JOT! I have been coming here for years. The staff are always polite and efficient. Breakfasts are simple and tasty. I especially love the NY breakfast sandwich. A favorite daily special is the short rib, when they have it. And the Mac n’ cheese is heaven. The desserts are all solid. I made a comparison recently to similar lunch spots and gourmet groceries (with hot food) nearby. IMO, Joan’s beats everyone else for quality and portion, price, etc. I saw a few negative reviews, and sure, once in while they miss something or I have to ask a second time. But that happens everywhere. I’m a loyal customer and fan.
We were in LA only five days. We had breakfast on Joan's on Third three of those five. The sweets (oh, the chocolate special cookie...), the omelet, the hash brown... and the espresso (real coffee there!)... to die for... Big surprise and a suggestion from ChatGPT! And, thanks Open AI, for that!

The BEST chicken noodle soup! Outside & inside dinning. It's a popular spot
Great service. The food is freshly prepared as you can tell by the way it tastes & arrives hot. I haven't tried everything on the menu besides just a few breakfast items. The staff is friendly & & brings food to tables. It's pricier than most other market cafes, but I enjoy the ample seating & ambiance.

I love a good picnic & Joan's provides more than that. The opportunity to mix & match apps, salads & mains like building with Legos makes for an exciting repast. EVERYTHING is just so well made! A bright open space that's very inviting!
I used to love coming here. It felt like a staple in my L.A. routine. But a few things have slipped, and it feels like they haven’t evolved with what diners expect today. The food is good and tasty. It’s the kind of place you go because you know exactly what you’ll like. The ambiance still carries that laid-back, market-meets-cafe charm. They don’t offer gluten-free bread for sandwiches. That’s a big miss for people with dietary needs or preferences. It feels like a small thing, but in 2025, it matters. Portion sizes are good, but the price is high. You’re paying for the reputation and the location, not always for innovation. Service is friendly, but not always efficient. During busy times, orders seem slower, the staff is juggling too much, and things can lag. Verdict: Joan’s On Third is still worth a visit if you love the familiar flavors and the comfy, local feel. Just go in with tempered expectations. It has charm, but it’s not keeping pace with what diners expect now.

Hip, Trendy spot here. Plenty of people with their pets inside and outside of this restaurant. I purchased food-to-go. Everything looked picture perfect in the deli display and there are (3) counters to order from so if one line is long look at the others. Bistro style seating inside as well as communal tables to sit and enjoy your feast. They were decorated for the Spring and Easter when I stopped in. Prices are what you should expect for this caliber of a gourmet market. Counter service (over by the beverages) was meh not trying to help me out nor come down to the actual deli display to see what I wanted to order. I stood in front of the display for a while looking to make eye contact when any number of employees behind but none of them even glanced my way. I will say the young Lady at the front register (bakery area) was pleasant and thanked people for waiting. Speaking of which they did not rush anyone who came up to the counter they allowed each person to take their time and make up their mind. So THAT is a plus. The Curry Chicken Salad had huge portions of Chicken not cut in cubes so keep this in mind if you intend on making a sandwich. The Cavatappi Pasta Salad smelled AMAZING and was quite flavorful. Will I return, probably - it's in Little Bit's neighborhood and you already know how I adore Gourmet Market for #culinaryadventures. Respectfully Reviewed.
Dang it. Last time I was at Joan’s it was experiencing the LA hotspot attitude virus. You know, firmly founded in a long enough history to claim “LA hot spot” or “local favorite “ but both are only true in theory. If you’re a local and have been eating there since it was one third the size it is today, you know that the quality of food has gone downhill. It was homey, like meals your favorite auntie cooked on holidays. Now it’s more Norms but with French food, maybe Normand’s. It’s not just the food though, which is alright, nothing to scream about, it’s the service. That’s where the cooler than you virus hits worst. First let’s acknowledge that poor service could always be because management is treating their employees poorly. Maybe they’re underpaid. Go there any weekend and you’ll see they’re definitely overworked. But that’s on Joan’s. When paying Craig’s prices for Normand’s food the service should come with a smile but more importantly without being rushed like they’ve all got better things to do. I have to admit that they remain busy, packed at times. And I did notice that their to-go bags come with a Disney Zootopia sticker so they must be doing something right. Or is it so rooted in lore that people keep coming back convinced it has to be good. Haven’t you heard the stories? 3rd Street changes frequently and there’s no shortage of other places to eat. Am I willing to venture into a new story, a new chef, a new LA hotspot to be? We’ll see. I’ll be sure and let you know if I find one that’s worthy of replacing Joan’s and earns any Disney stickers.

I didn’t find their menu exciting or anything special. Had the Chinese chicken salad gluten free modified which was good but honestly quite boring. My niece took the maple chicken sandwich and like it. The table we set on was dirty (I did ask one of the servants “can we sit there?” And he confirmed that we can). Probably won’t go back there .
I had a very unpleasant experience at this restaurant today. I came in, saw a sandwich on a poster that looked very appetizing, and asked about the price. The staff member replied, “I’m not sure,” and then continued with their own tasks without any attempt to help or find the information. When I asked where I could check the price, they lazily waved their hand to the right without saying a word and kept ignoring me. No attention, no basic courtesy, no customer service at all. The food might look good on posters, but the service was extremely disappointing.
