Went with some friends to this noodle restaurant for a little break from Shanghai. No English menus but there was a helpful waitress that showed us how to use their WeChat ordering system. So between a couple of phones and translation software, it worked out just fine. The restaurant was busy at 8AM but she got us a seat right away. The soup noodles were very tasty. I especially liked the onion noodle bowl. Noodles are firmer than the Shanghai version. The place has a nice, traditional, feel too it and we had a great time.

The annual Fengzhen Braised Pork Noodles are back! The standard accompaniment is a clear broth, which is incredibly flavorful. The pork itself may not look impressive, but it's truly melt-in-your-mouth tender—the lean meat, fat, and skin all melt instantly. It has a rich, fermented rice flavor, which might not be for everyone. The pork is served cold; you turn it over into the noodles and let it simmer for a bit before eating. The sweet and sour gluten was too sweet; I couldn't taste the vinegar.

This is a famous restaurant that's so delicious it makes me want to travel all the way to China just to eat it. The large pork noodles in plain broth (also known as char siu noodles) are exquisite, and even better when topped with bok choy or stewed shiitake mushrooms. The amount of noodles is 1.5 times the amount in Japan, but the soup is very refreshing yet rich, so you'll find yourself finishing it in no time. It used to be a self-service restaurant, but it has since been renovated. First, when you enter the restaurant, you order at the counter on the right, and once you're seated with your receipt, they will bring you your order. I always go there for breakfast. It gets busy, so go early in the morning. It gets very busy at lunchtime. In the afternoon, they close because they sell out, so it's best to go early.

This old Suzhou noodle shop is said to be packed during meal times. The Fengzhen white noodle soup is a must-try, seemingly only available seasonally. It's absolutely delicious! The meat is stewed to a tender, melt-in-your-mouth consistency, and the noodles are perfectly chewy. The Suzhou-style fried fish is sweet, but too much can be greasy. The fried eel paste is delicious, with a sweet and sour flavor. The golden pork ribs are also delicious, but a bit oily. Finally, the scallion oil noodles were just average, quite bland.

Fengzhen Big Pork Noodles: White broth is 15 yuan per bowl, red broth is 12 yuan per bowl, and big pork is 12 yuan per piece. The staff recommends the white broth, which is very fresh and the big pork is fat but not greasy. It's delicious. The appetizer green beans are 8 yuan per plate, which is very mini, about the size of a regular sauce plate.

The red soup isn't overly salty, and it's refreshing yet not bland. Great! The meat should be soaked in the broth for extra tenderness! It's a shame summer hasn't arrived yet, so I didn't get to try the even better white soup!

Fengzhen Da Mian, Suzhou's most popular noodle soup, is typically only available in midsummer. Tong Dexing is highly recommended. Fried fish, now known as smoked fish, boasts firm flesh, crispy skin, and a rich, fragrant marinade. As a topping for noodles, it's considered a delicacy by Suzhou residents.

完璧ではありませんが、ホッとする味。中国語があまりできなくても店員も嫌な顔をしないので、初めての蘇州におすすめ。

The eel was delicious, too. Both the meat and the noodles were tasty. The staff were friendly, although they spoke Chinese. It's a little pricey, though. 48 yuan for mochi meat, eel, and noodles. I think the mochi meat noodles would suit Japanese tastes.
