Opinions de The Uncommons New York
I love the Uncommons - I recommend it for anyone who is a fan of boardgames. Their staff has always been really great to me! That's why I'm so glad they recently unionized:) I know they are in the middle of Union negotiations, so as long as they meet the demands of their amazing staff I will continue to recommend it to everyone who says they like boardgames and I will take my friends there regularly:
My gf and I pop in here sometimes to sit and play board games. The workers are friendly and knowledgeable — plus they have a union. Awesome. Recommend to other fans of board/card games. Heard they have a broken AC so hopefully that is fixed before the next visit!
Omg I cannot day how much I love this place and the concept in general! It’s a great atmosphere with hundreds of different types of games! I personally love board games and always want to try new ones, and this is the place for that! You can rent a table for $5 per person for however long you want (I think it might be a bit different during the busy days though). It’s family friendly but also great for adults too. They do sell alcohol there along with coffee and some cafe like foods. They have an entire wall of games and they also sell new games, if you end up loving a game so much that you wanted buy it. The staff is awesome! They are always friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable about many of the games’ rules. The only thing I don’t exactly like about this place is that it’s kinda small and can’t hold a lot of people. This can be problematic as it quickly fills up and can get cramped. The tables are first come first server. They do have reservations for the tables but it has to be for large groups and they need to be done in advance.
Fantastic place. My wife and I were in the area seeing a show at Le Poisson Rouge, looking for a place to pick up some coffee before we went. Happened upon The Uncommons and the 2 people we were helped by were very friendly and courteous. Offered to make us a fresh pot if we had the time to wait. We did, had a wonderful conversation with both people running the store. It was packed with people playing games. Of which their selection of games to play in store and buy was extensive. Even tho the store was packed to the gills they were both amazing. Definetly a wonderful quick stop for us here and if you happen to live in the general area, between the games and the incredibly friendly people working there, this seems like a really fun place to hang out!
Such a great spot for table top games. Just $10/person for three hours, and such wonderful staff! My first time there with a friend, a staff member suggested several 2-player games that we both loved. Definitely coming back!!
People working there are super nice. Great selection of board games. It does get packed on a Friday night but you can make reservations online. They do have some pastries / chips and drinks, but would be nice if they have some food as well.
First time here and it was great. There is such a variety of games and they have a good selection of beer (all cans). It is a good idea to make a reservation if you have more than 2 people because the space fills up fast. It's an extra $5 per person this way but imo worth it. It closes at 11 so keep it in mind when you are playing.
Love this place, I come here often to play board games and Magic. The employees here are very friendly and knowledgeable about the games they stock, and when it comes to Magic, Casey is a great facilitator and judge. Definitely recommended as long as the store supports their unionized workers.
This place has a huge selection of board games that not even the employees working here have played them all. The employees are clever and have played and heard enough about the games you be able to give you a quick run down of the board games. Definitely a great place to visit if you're into board games and want to explore new options without committing to actually buying them. There's plenty of space to play and can seat large parties of at least 6. They also cook, so food and snacks are available for purchase, we didn't buy anything but it did smell absolutely amazing!
I went to this board game store and this is very nice and the staff were very friendly to us. They got Dungeons and Dragons game and including the dice. The prices were pretty good whenever you want to play for the time being. I will comeback again soon when I want to play any board games.
I came here with some friends to try out a boardgame or two. The staff was friendly and helpful in finding us a game to play. They have a huge selection of games, which is excellent. Tables are $5 per person for the first hour and $10 for all day. And you can just upgrade if you need more time, which is very reasonable. Food is pretty simple fair, and considering it's in the middle of Manhattan, reasonably priced. The place itself is kind of tight, but once you start rolling dice the size of the place hardly matters. There is only one small bathroom that seemed clean enough. I had a wonderful time, I plan on returning and I would recommend this place if you're interested in playing games. I would NOT recommend if you want a quiet place to have a cup of coffee: go to a cafe if you want that.
Highly enjoyed the way this memorable board game / coffee shop works. The charming and sturdy furniture made it accessible for our group of 4 adults. The batistas provided high quality results and their friendly demeanor really stood out. Looking forward to another visit. Totally worth your time.
This has become the go-to spot for my son and me. The staff is welcoming and polite. The patrons are an eclectic bunch of people. It feels great to find a spot so accepting of different people. It provides a space for my son and I to get our nerd on.
They have a student discount for games and fairly good coffee
If you're competitive and love boardgames this is just the place for you. Pay $5 and get hours and hours of fun from more than a 100 boardgames that are arranged along the west wall of the shop. Can't reach one? Holler to the guy who's always hovering around the front to help you get the boardgame down. My favorites so far have been Carcassonne (they have several versions), Dominion, Coup, Betrayal and Kombat Kittens (don't knock it till you try it). While you're having fun, indulge in the cafe on premises for some snacks (their personal pizzas are quite good) and some tea/coffee/smoothies!
Indulging in the delightful ambiance of this board game coffee shop is an experience I eagerly anticipate time and time again. The warm, inviting atmosphere sets the stage for countless hours of enjoyment, whether I'm catching up with friends or diving into a thrilling game with fellow enthusiasts. The extensive selection of board games ensures there's always something new to explore, and the knowledgeable staff are like game gurus, ready to guide us through any adventure. Plus, the delectable array of coffee and snacks adds an extra layer of enjoyment to the experience, keeping us fueled and satisfied throughout our gaming escapades. In short, this gem of a spot seamlessly combines the joy of board gaming with the comforts of a cozy coffee shop, making it a haven for any aficionado of good times and great company.
Be sure to make a reservation! My friends and I tried to go in on a whim, but it was booked out. When we did make a reservation though, it was excellent. Such a great way to spend time doing things together if the weather is crummy and you're sick of museums. And it's great to try out a game before buying it. I'm absolutely coming back the next time a group of us want to spend time in the city on a rainy day.
I've been here a few times and it's a great place. They have a lot of different games you can just play. I do recommend reserving a table ahead of time. The staff are great.
Adorable and so fun! $10 per person gets you 3 hours of gameplay, though they do run student discounts during off-peak days. They have ample game selection and some available for purchase as well. They offer coffees which looked great and cans of craft beers and ciders as well! The staff was so kind and did a great job! We put our name on the wait list and they were upfront that it may take 15 min to get seated, or three hours -- it ended up only being 45 minutes, and there are plenty of bars and spots to grab a bite while you wait. I would definitely recommend this place if you're looking to go out with friends but don't want to do a bar/restaurant.
Delicious coffee, fun games, reasonable price of 15 a person (10 for students) to play any of like 300 games for 3 hours
Great little spot to play games and relax
Go here! Just do it. It’s so fun! They have a million board games, each different and unique. I got to try a bunch of new games and the staff was super helpful with recommendations for experienced board game players as well as novices. They also offer coffee, energy drinks (including a dragon ball energy drink that my BF loved) and some beers and ciders. I can’t wait to go back!
Very nice place. Has lots of games to choose from. Coffee was excellent. Make sure to make a reservation ahead to get a table! Place is small but packed with people and games. Lots of fun if you’re in New York on a rainy day and want something to do that’s inexpensive.
I work with queer teens in mental health and suddenly needed a space to meet a teen in as my office had flooded, so I decided to come here very last minute. When I got to The Uncommons everyone was kind and welcoming, they've created a very safe space for people, but especially for queer teens. The staff went above and beyond to accommodate us, I truly am so glad I happened to stumble upon this place. I'm absolutely going to be recommending it to the other teens (and other queer people) I work with as it's a safe, cozy space to play and relax.
Great customer service, knowledgeable staff, Always welcoming. A great scene for gamers of all kinds.
Didn’t eat here, came in with my fiancé to pick out a board game. Didnt catch the individuals name who helped us but they were wonderful to chat with and helped us pick out a few games. There were also plenty of people there playing games.
Stopped in tonight out of the rain. Cool spot and nice staff. I loved the selection of games. I was solo tonight and enjoyed a few minutes of a game I have never played. My only only warning to anyone interested, is that the food is not the reason to stop in. Come for the board games, stay for the board games. I will be back again when I am in NY.
Awesome. Cheap. Fun. Definitely reserve. It was totally full when we went.
Always a good time at the uncommons. They have an entire wall of games you can play, so it's a great place to get to know some games before you commit to buying one. Def come on a weekday so it's not as crowded. On the weekends the wait time could be up to an hour. They have a good selection of beers, drinks, and the coffee is pretty good. As for food, it seems like micro able types like pigs in a blanket or small personal pizza, but the mozzarepa is pretty addicting haha.
They have an amazing selection of many of the latest releases open and ready to play. They are also willing to teach you how to play some titles. There's also a wide range of games for sale. Weekday rate is $5 per person to play for one hour or $10 per person to play for three hours. I'm not sure about the weekend or evening rate. If you want to be sure to get space to play, you must call ahead. Weekdays from open to late afternoon are pretty open but evenings and weekends get busy. I didn't try it but the smell of their cheese pizza made me hungry!
The cafe is great with unlimited collection of games. Although you might get little confused and think of what to play if you are visiting for the first time. Few games need the rules to be read and might consume a lot of time if you have no idea about the game. Better to come prepared and already search for the rules and games your are interested in playing so that you will not waste your time here.
I recently started coming here with my friend at LEAST once a month and came in last night with a group for a last minute get together for my birthday! I cannot stress this enough, the customer service has been phenomenal every. single. time. And I’ve been there enough times to kind of see the rotation of employees so to get this amazing customer service no matter who’s working says so much about this friendly environment. Last night our group wanted to play UNO but it wasn’t available at the time (a different group was playing it) one of the employees said she would try her best to find it for us and then did an excellent job at suggesting other game options! Our group was super impressed at the group game recommendations and I will still be hyping this place for the rest of my life so thank you to The Uncommons team!
Great experience and a lot of fun. You pay 10$ per person for 3 hours of board games, and I would say you should spend the entire 3 hours to get the best experience. We looked through a lot of games before setting down on the ones we ended up playing. We were a party of 3 and ended up playing Chameleon, Play your cards right, and Best Story Wins! Play your cards right was my favorite out of the 3, and I definitely recommend it for small groups to engage in some deep, fun and spicy conversations!
Loved it. Reserve online fiest as theyre always packed. Can't believe its $10 a person in Greenwich village.
Cozy spot with great selection - tables were clean and owners friendly. Fair pricing as well. Overall would recommend
Great beer (small selection) Great games (large selection) - few games we picked were missing a few things but we just popped it in the used bin and picked another. The people working there were very welcoming and sorted us a table as we didn’t have a reservation (would recommend) It’s a perfect evening activity or day if you want. We bought a board game and they are a little above market price but remember to support your locals 🥰
Great board game cafe, “sister” establishment of Hex&Co. You pay $10 for 3 hours or $5 for 90 minutes. It gets quite crowded on evenings so it’s best to make a reservation or you’ll have to wait. They have a good selection of games to play, as well as lots of games on sale. Note that they don’t have an online (or physical) list of their games, so you just have to find them yourself! And they don’t allow outside food.
The uncommons is a great place for all types of board games. For $5 per person Mon-Thursday, or $10 on friday-sunday, you get access to all the games you can think of. They have drinks, pastries, but you can't bring outside food. They also sell trading cards, and they hold MTG and final fantasy card tournaments
Great board game spot for parties of all sizes. Super friendly employees and great cafe options.
Between boardgame outings and Commander Nights, this shop is a comfy, inclusive place where you can have a coffee or tea and play games with your buddies.
My family and I were able to get a table and buy some drinks and spend several hours playing games. We played Ticket to Ride, Guess Who, and Cards Against Humanity. The staff was also helpful with their beer recommendations as I was unfamiliar with the brands and drinks. The vibe was great, lots of people taking time to play with friends and enjoy their Sunday night. It is a great spot to meet up and enjoy spending time with your friends!
They easily host the best One Piece nights in the city. The vibes are high and Cooper is a great host who is always looking out for the players. "City on a Hill" for what the LGS should be
All the tables were booked, but their selection of games to play is top notch! Really friendly staff too...just book ahead.
The Uncommons is a small cafe specializing in board games and other tabletop games, providing a space near NYU for those to play. We came in the afternoon and it was very crowded. The tables are decently priced per hour to play, easy to split the costs with friends or others. It has a nice cozy vibe and tons of games available to play.
Went here for a One Piece Card Game tournament. The tournament was well run, tables were clean, and the owners are extremely nice. The prices are reasonable and the owners are very attentive. I recommend you support this place as caring card shop owners are extremely rare nowadays. I will definitely be coming back here.
I loved the guild-based drink options, the dimir drink was perfect. Great place for a date or to play a card game tournament. Queer friendly. Will be back to draft one day i hope
Not wanting to travel all the way to Brooklyn, you would not believe my shock when I discovered a board game café in Midtown Manhattan! After paying, you and your friends can eat (cost separate) and play for up to 3 hours! They have tons of classics such as CATAN, Sorry, Candy Land, and Taboo. However, they also have unique and uncommon games such as Haiclue, Daybreak, and Telestrations. My advice: definitely come early! Tables and seats are limited to a first-come-first-serve basis. You should also plan ahead of what you want to do. Some of these games take an hour or two, while others are fast a couple of minutes. Nonetheless, have fun and check out their shop section where you can buy some of the games too.
This place is a true NY gem! I had previously visited but completely forgot to share my experience. As I was passing by through the neighborhood and had some time to spare I went in and Cooper took care of me. He had helped me pick this awesome game for a Friendsgiving and this time I had to thank him for guiding me with that choice. This place has any board game you could think of and the atmosphere is very friendly and welcoming. Please visit and bring friends to share yummy snacks and possibly challenge those friendships 😅
I really liked it! My friends and I go crazy for board games, this was a really nice place for 10 dollars per person for 3 hours. The workers are very very nice, they were clear, helpful and immediately explained the rules and everything. They were active and the games were very organized. You also have a lot of option to even buy the games. There were 1 floor to ceiling wall of playable games and 3 walls and displays of buyable games. Not kid friendly though, a lot of adults males playing role play boardgames (the ones that are long, takes 1-3 hours to play and require a lot of experience). Loved the experience I will be returning ❤️ The bad reviews about the broken AC did not occur for us, the rooms were nicely aired and it was completely normal. I recommend going around 11-12, after it might get busy.
This was such an amazing date day activity. We had so much fun here. It's right down the block from the park so it can be a 2 part date thing. They had so many games to choose from and the staff were super helpful. Especially the guy with the mustache he was really nice and suggested really great games to play we spent like 3hrs here. They also have a kosher eating game that you won't regret trying wink 😉
Really laid back and fun game space! Staff were very friendly and helpful in selecting a great game based on what you’re looking for. Great for dates, families and friend groups. They have a very wide selection of games that can be played or purchased. Small snacks and non alcoholic drinks are available. The only con is the place is small so it fills up quickly, and tables are mostly close together. Will definitely be back! Great space for a couple hours of non screen connection.
The Uncommons is a fantastic spot for board game enthusiasts and coffee lovers alike. The vintage board games available are a unique and fun addition to the experience, and the coffee and espresso drinks are top-notch. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting, making it a great spot to spend an afternoon with friends. Whether you're a seasoned board gamer or just looking to try something new, The Uncommons is definitely worth a visit.
Super great board game / etc bar. Small and cozy but has a lottt of games, so they recommended a few for what we were looking for. Great suggestions, we ended up buying the game. Makes a good date spot for something new other than just a bar. They have a beer fridge so you can get drinks while you play. Staff is super friendly and helpful.
Awesome board game cafe. Huge selection of classics and more obscure games. $5 per person for unlimited game play. Menu of coffee, smoothies, and other snacks. Free wifi as well, which makes it easy to find game instruction videos on a phone. Other players are pretty understanding if your group gets loud periodically while playing a heated game :) Private bathroom is also available to customers.
This place is a board games lover's haven. It's quaint with lively atmosphere. The workers are attentive and helpful. Endless selection of games to choose from, and some are available for purchase. The food variety is limited; mostly pastry and mini pizzas. I hope they improve on the food, as the gaming can go on for hours and folks will want to eat. My friends and I were there for a three hour block of time and we were quite hungry. Apart from that it's a fun way to spend time with friends/family.
Great place to hang out with friends and spend a couple hours playing any of the games from their huge selection of board games, RPGs, miniatures, cards or any other type. Very crowded during the weekends and afternoons, so reserving a spot is recommended but in the mornings is much more relaxed and easy to just get a spot on the go. Recommended.
Overall a good time - great selection of games and coffee to drink. People may hog games they may not even play at their table, so kind of annoying and feel like there should be a policy against that, but overall good. Great way to spend some time with friends during the weekend!
An amazing experience for board game lovers! I would have given this place 5 stars but two of the board games we picked out were in very shabby conditions. Now I do get this is a board game cafe so I understand they won't be in tiptop shape, and no pieces were missing (although there were pieces from other games in our boxes), so it wasn't too bad. The workers were also extremely helpful, kind, and made the experience better. Would highly recommend!
Staff were good, and there was a vast amount of board games. My group went 30 minutes before closing, and the staff made sure we paid for only those 30 minutes as opposed to the usual full price for 1 hour. I appreciated it. The biggest irk for me was the smell. It was not too pleasant, and I felt that ventilation was a little iffy. Games and staff were great so I might go again some day!
Absolutely love the concept of a board game cafe and glad one is located downtown. Unlimited 3 hr board game play for $10/person. Great for groups of 2 or more people. Both alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages available. Somewhat limited options for alcohol in their fridge but the craft ciders and beers are super tasty. Coffee, tea and smoothies are also available. Light snacks for sale such as candies and baked goods but I would go there expecting to get a meal. One con of this place was the space itself. It is somewhat small but they do make maximal use of the space. There is both the main room and a back side room. The lighting in the back room makes it feel like a grungy basement and preferred the main room. Tables themselves are large for game play but somewhat squished together. Overall I had a great time hanging out with a friend while playing board games. A perfect way to spend a Sunday evening.
15 dollars an hour for a table. Unless you’re not playing board games. Very cozy atmosphere and perfect if you and your friends love board games. Not a huge selection of drinks but enough. They host a lot of events and the people there for the events get priority when it comes to tables. My friends and I got lucky and it wasn’t too busy when we were there so we got to sit for however long we wanted.
so you like to play games, eh? The Uncommons is where you need to be to play numerous amount of tabletop, rpg, board, card, etc. games for $10 per person gets you 3 hours of playtime. floor to ceiling neat stacks of games, tables placed throughout for gaming, and there is a small bar to order coffee, beer, wine and small eats. had relatives in town with kids in tow and they had a blast. the coffee i ordered was solidly good and the staff was informative and friendly. good place to be in the moment with friends and family without the infinite scroll addiction getting in the way—play good games, win good times!
Definitely on the crowded and noisier side but it was such a fun spot to hangout with friends with a bev of choice. The barista that helped Me out was really sweet as well! Great vibes, great games, overall a good experience. They have sooooo many walls filled with board games, my kinda paradise on earth
This place used to be great, the biggest downside is that the games themselves are in massive need of attention. We played a handful of different games and each one was either missing pieces, falling apart, or both. It’s disappointing because I used to love this place but it’s clear the quality has slipped. Hopefully they make some investments in retiring and replacing the games that are past their prime. The staff are all great, and they make a great coffee but not one game was fully in tact and I can’t say I’d go back because of it.
One of the workers was VERY INTENSE to me and another patron (separate occasions) and you could tell it made both groups cringe a little.
Incredibly disappointed in my experience here. I went with a group of friends and paid for a reservation. We asked about 3 different very common board games and they explained they only had them available to purchase. Their board game selection is approximately 70% games you can purchase and 30% available to play. Most of the games available are incredibly weathered and not updated. I was so surprised that a place that charges for a reservation to play games would have games that you have to purchase on top of your playing fee. Not really in the spirit of a board game bar to not keep your selection active and instead try to make a profit off of people expecting a wide selection of games. Any other board game bar I have been to would graciously open a game they had for sale to add to their library if it was not available for play. This would best be labeled as a board game store rather than a board game bar. There are several other better options in New York that I recommend you check out before this place until they update their selection. EDITING Based on owner response - This is good to know that games are opened regularly. This was not offered to us but I believe it really would have turned our mood as a group around on the night. The games we requested were The Quacks of Quedlinburg, Mysterium, and an Expansion version of Catan (all games I'd never had a trouble finding at similar places). I will edit the review to reflect that maybe we just had an off night with being offered this. This place does have a very wide selection of games when you include those available for purchase so a standing policy offered to customers to open any game not in the "for play" library would be an excellent change! Thanks for the prompt response by the owner.
MTG related review: Been going there for quick pack purchases and coffee for a very long time - Great for sealed purchases. Coffee is tasty. That’s about all I can say positively. Sat down in the space to actually play recently. Space is way too small for in person gaming. Feels like a lunchroom in middle school equipped with the aggro lunch staff. The seating is the most uncomfortable arrangement in existence. Tables are way too small for commander. $10 for a mid tier tall beer is insanity. Was gonna order a snack but they totally burned someone else’s order in the microwave and the whole place was full of smoke and a horrible smell for quite some time. You’re better off coming here with a couple ( and I mean literally 2 max) of people and playing some board games VS any TCG playing. There’s too many spacious locations in the area to justify it. You’re better off sitting on the floor at Washington sq park. Space stuff isn’t their fault so I can’t really Blame them but mostly a negative experience overall. Still gonna support with packs and coffee - but now I know better and you should too.
This place customer service was absolutely terrible. The staff at the counter had a very nasty attitude,Was rude and also not welcoming,Not even 5 mins into sitting me and my friends were told to leave.
We tried to play 3 different games but none of the games have all that is needed to play. I talked to the workers there, and all they did was to find excuses. They said it was the holiday season so they hadn’t had the time to sort through the cards. But as a board game cafe, you have one single job…. It’s not like you’re a restaurant that just so happened to have board games…
There is so much to like about The Uncommons, but the temperature inside makes it hard to enjoy the atmosphere the staff creates and the fun games. The door was propped open in order to cool the store down since the AC unit has been broken. We were informed that the ovens and other equipment can make the store unbearably hot, so the only choice is to prop the door open. The staff were very friendly and apologetic, so I’m hoping the AC gets fixed so I can come back comfortably soon!
This is so far the rudest place I’ve been to in New York, weird looks with uncomfortable communication, and at the end they kicked us out to take the table, this place really sucks and was a bad experience
The main guy at the reception was super uptight. Despite there being multiple tables unoccupied, he said clearing those will take “time“ and we should leave until after he lets us know theyre ready. Rude for no reason. Worst part is im a frequent guest and i liked going to the cafe. Not coming back again.
