Spanish Tavern - Newark

I Loved the Spanish Tavern. Very clean and decorated nicely. Waiter was very attentive, pleasant and aimed to please. Food was delicious. It came out hot and timed perfectly from one coarse to the next. Our waiter presented a desert tray, so that you may see what sweeten your taste buds. A birthday celebration was at the table across, in which all of the waiters sang Happy Birthday, And presented a free dessert. I enjoyed the night out with my son and his sweet wife an extra gift to come in about 4 months 👶

The waitstaff was incredibly attentive without being intrusive, the restaurant was elegant yet comfortable, and the food was absolutely delicious. Predominantly serving dishes with coastal influences, this Spanish roots restaurant is a must. It's a bit upscale and a bit on the higher range of cost but 1000% worth the $. If ever in the area I intend to return for a visit. Oh! And the shuttle from my hotel (airport Marriott) was incredibly convenient and free, clean, and comfortable.

Excellent establishment... If you want a great meal before a event on Newark, you must check this place out !!!

What a experience. Took my daughter and her friend there will they missed there flight. The waiters, meal, everything was incredible. I has the NY strip and it was perfect plus a craft beer from the oldest brewery in Spain.

Great food, incredible service. Restaurant has it's own parking lot. Rich atmosphere and won't turn you away for walking in with jeans and a hoodie. There's not much I can say that hasn't already been said about this place. Ordered a sangria and a paella which ran $41.50 after taxes. Soup of the day 'sample' was practically an appetizer in of itself. Portions are generous. This restaurant is an easy choice if you want to treat yourself to a fine dining experience at a fraction of the cost.

Newark is really cool, never been here, coming to see a hockey game and came for lunch and whatba great surprise, white table cloth and servers all over, great service, the bread was great, complimentary soup, very tasty, we had the roast pork quesdilla very nice and flavorful and I had bone in chicken in a sherry sauce, super good, desserts were tasty as well! Super old school classy feel, will fo again.

So I have to say I was very impressed with this place. Went with a coworker of mine he got paella and I got their mixed seafood dish with green sauce. Also not pictured was the appetizer I had that had Spanish sausage and shrimp in it with a beautiful flavored red sauce. I was very impressed with the service, we were never in want for anything, and the food was delicious. Not from around here but if I come back I'm definitely going again.

Came in from Boston and went there bc it came highly recommended. Had dinner at the bar bc we did not have reservations... Best move ever! The bartender (Juan???) was super attentive and very informative about the menu!(And clearly he did great work with the drinks bc I can't recall his name right now!) The meal starts with a serving of soup (delicious btw) and some of the best dinner rolls I've ever eaten... and that's saying a lot bc I love love love some good bread! The paella was superb! The filet mignon wrapped in bacon...amazing! Don't forget about the Passion Fruit Mojitos! Definitely worth the visit!!!

This is a very beautiful restaurant where there is outside seating and an amazing menu. We went as a six person lunch/dinner around 3-4pm. Its a perfect day for outside seating but the Inside is spacious and the variety of dishes offered is perfect. We wanted to kill as much time as possible before my sister's flight so it worked out perfectly because the food took a good hour to come out. Waiter was very smart and very helpful. Portions were perfect see pic. Everything was fresh! We had a great time

We have been coming here for years. The food does not disappoint. They make the best grilled prawns - langostinos around. The dish comes with the potato slices. The steak was cooked as requested and had good flavor. There is always complimentary collard green soup when you have dinner. We drank the mango sangria. For dessert we had the bread pudding and crema catalana. The crema looks like crem brûlée but it’s a little more lemon flavored. The waiters were very attentive and moved our items out of the way quickly to make room for the next course. The place is an inviting intimate setting.

One of the best restaurants I’ve been to lately. And I picked it randomly before a concert I was going to nearby in Prudential! Literally everything we ate and drank was perfect, from the octopus, to the paella, to the caipirinhas, to the sorbet. Perfectly cooked and delicious. And the service was outstanding. Will 100% come back!!

Went here for a work event. Food was plentifull and tasty. I would recommend the steak and the boil..( I forget what it was called)

Spanish Tavern is an amazing Spanish restaurant. The seafood paella was delicious :). The ambiance is really nice and the wait staff is very pleasant and made sure we were pleased with our visit. Definitely ask for the crembuccino for desert! Such an amazing combination! Deliciousos!

Wonderful staff with great recommendations offered by the waiter. The scallops and calamari were delicious. Great appetizer for 2 as well. The flavor, the seasonings were perfect. Great dining experience overall. I definitely recommend this place and will return the next time I'm in Newark.

Great food and great service. I think it easily deserves a 4.5 stars. Removing half if star because bread was somehow "old" or definitely not on Spanish or Portuguese standards. Sauces were also good but felt a little bit weirdly too similar. On the good part, great selection of wine and not overly expensive, expect aroubd 30 to 50 usd a bottle. Monkfish was perfectly cooked and prawns were delicious. Safran rice was good but not that special. I would definitely go back to check other plates. Consider around 70 to 80 usd per person with drinks and tips included.

Ambience is great. Small, quiet, and fancy. It has it's own parking lot and the food was amazing. They start you off with the soup of the day at the perfect temperature. We ordered the scallops and calamari in garlic sauce as the appetizer. Perfectly cooked. We ordered the paella marinera as the main course. It was so packed with sea food we couldn't finish it all. Amazing service too.

I had the crab topped salmon & my friend had the stuffed jumbo shrimp, food was Fast, Fresh & DELICIOUS!!! LOVED IT

I've have been eating at the Spanish Tavern for at least 25 years. The service and food are always outstanding. Try the red sangria. Do not, not get the langostino's, they are one of the best things on the menu.

This restaurant is PHENOMENAL! After reading other reviews, I decided to go here for Thanksgiving! I live in Queens, NY and went to Newark to see the movie "Sara's Oil" wanted a spot for dinner and they did not disappoint! I highly recommend and will stop by again when I'm in the neighborhood!

Excellent dinner. Great food and service. Best place we have been to in the Ironbound section of Newark. Convenient parking lot across the street.

Holiday party at Spanish Tavern was outstanding. Food excellent portions and everything was delicious from the appetizers to the main dishes and dessert. Sangria was big hit as well.

We had the best experience here last Friday. We celebrated the holidays from work with our families and were treated like royalty. The food was delicious, the kids were comfortable and the service was very laid back and friendly! My pork chop dinner was sooo good! The minestrone soup that comes with the bread is fantastic!! Our drinks were also really good! Can’t say enough good things, yummy and friendly and parking across the street!!

Went to the Spanish Tavern with my girlfriend before the Devils game. Was the first time i was here in about 30 years and was exactly the same. Even with it being busy because it was before a game, the service was great. The paella was delicious and my girlfriend's steak was cooked to perfection. It brought back great memories from when my parents would bring us a kids.

Great service. Food was ok I had the octopus Galician style very nice done and soft pulpo. it had a good taste but pieces were cut to thin and for my taste the pulpo could use a little more and heavier grade Spanish Olive oil. The caldo gallego soup had a great savor, taste, but it could use a few more white beans lol...

We came on my birthday for an early dinner. The designated parking lot is perfect, I actually watched the parking antics out the window as we ate 🤣 when you walk in you are in the bar. It seems a gallery of sorts with modern art on the walls small but cozy bar area, enough space for someone to enjoy a meal there. We were seated immediately in the dining room, very pretty atmosphere classic old world art reminiscent of my European grandparents’ dining room art ❤️. I chose this restaurant based on the reviews of the paella, we ordered the paella for two and enjoyed the escarole soup while we waited. The paella was amazing the seafood really does come out perfectly cooked. The meat; chicken and sausage were really good but the amount of meats compared to the seafood seemed less (maybe because it had been said I like seafood more, which there was plenty for both of us). There was plenty to eat and still enough fit each of us to have a full meal the next night. The fresh made potato chips are amazing we wound up taking them home too. The only reason I gave less stars for service was because I had to ask for lemon for my water so many times, there were plenty of servers to attend to all your needs, the service was fine after that was resolved. We both enjoyed the whole experience and plan to return. Thank you for the great birthday dinner.

Excellent service and very good food. Had dinner on Wednesday with a party of 5. Mario Trindade was a wonderful waiter with lots of stories and great interaction. I thought the food was good but not great across the board. Chorizo was on point, shrimp was just okay and I didn’t care for the squid tentacles. I had cubed halibut with salmon and shrimp in a kind of curry that was very good. The lamb chops were excellent.

Service was great. I ordered the Salmosn stuffed with crab meat. It was a bit bland to my liking but it was ok. Clams casino was delicious. Place was packed but had to wait just a bit. My suggestion, make reservations. Definitely would go back

Met some friends @ the bar, smaller version than Fornos, the bar tender Juan was very professional and friendly. We just share too plates since we did jot not really plan to eat @ the restaurant. The Zew Zealand clams, Spanish soup, the red wine was great. The bread was nice & warm and the rest of the crew check on us make sure everything was good. I still prefer Formos because od the space!

We ordered the calamari, octopus and clams casino for apps. All were very good. Calamari crispy and that marinara sauce had a little kick which made it better. octopus was tender and not rubbery. The clams were satisfactory. My daughter ordered chicken and rice and me and my wife order paella Valencia for 2. Entrees were good. My only disappointment was they pushed the "still" water on me which cost $10. All patrons beware as it's a up sell tactic. I hated it cause I was targeted and no other table got screwed.

Delicious food, good service, in what looks like a housing area. Seafood paella is chock full of shrimps, clams, scallops, mussels, and half a lobster. Very good. We have a nice dessert, not unlike a crème caramel, which is quite nice. Well priced, recommended if you're in the Newark area.

We've gone twice in 8 months and had different experiences. The first time was almost flawless with great service and exceptional food. We came back and were a bit disappointed overall. Our pitcher of sangria was agressively sweet, and the txistorra dish was surprisingly lacking in... txistorra. My rice side dish was hard and at times tough to chew. My partner ordered the special of grilled wild boar chops at medium temp and got extra well done. She ate one chop and rasied the concern with our server, who did ask if we wanted another cooked correctly. Given the previous chops, we opted for the check. My recommendation to Spanish Tavern is consistency and quality are important, esp. when charging $35-45 per plate.

Food was just ok, not over the top. Service little slow. Place smelled moldy. Picked it for the free parking lot. Not much parking in that area. Would not return.

Made reservations for 4 on Saturday at 4:45. When we got there it wasn’t crowded, so we were seated right away. The staff was professional and attentive. The restaurant has an old rustic vibe which was ok for me. We ordered some apps the..scallops stuffed with crab meat and scallops with calamari in a spicy sauce. It was just ok. I wasn’t able to eat the calamari, because they were rubbery. The lentil soup they served was good. My dinner was Salmon with crab meat on top. It wasn’t good. The salmon was flavorless and was on top of a red sauce that wasn’t good at all. My husband enjoyed his meal which was the steak ham and egg special. I should have just gotten the Paella Valenciana which my friend said was good. Over all the experience was good. If i do come back I will get the Paella Valenciana.

What a disappointing experience this was. I haven’t been to the restaurant since Covid. I guess there was a change in management. The change was definitely not an improvement. I will give it 2 stars because the service was good. The food was bland. I ordered the mariscada in green sauce, and it was tasteless. The sauce was covered with a layer of butter and the seafood was definitely not fresh. My husband had the Salmon at Horno and it was bland. The sangria was mostly orange juice, honestly I think they forgot to add the wine. 😩 Overall, a very disappointing experience. Sad because it used to be a great restaurant and the food top notch. It’s not anymore!!!

My husband and I went to Spanish Tavern for an early dinner. Restaurant was pleasant, clean and not too many customers. I ordered seafood and my husband ordered meat. We also ordered appetizers and sangria. The appetizers were good, sangria was good but they left the apple with the cored. The ternera marbella had no flavor, tasted just like tomato sauce.: veal wasn’t tender either. Curiously, salmon had the same sauce of the ternera: salmon wasn’t seasoned but crab meat was salty. The soup was cold too. We didn’t enjoy the flavor. Dessert was good 😊 Waiter was attentive and polite. Music was also really nice. The only problem is whoever was cooking. Management has to train them. I don’t think I will return.

Very disappointed the food was just not up to par the shrimp and garlic sauce was OK a little salty the clams casino were over done and dry, the Seabass had little bones in it and barely any flavor, the filet mignon was so small and I was supposed to have a lump crab meat instead it was a crabcake, the chicken and garlic sauce barely had any flavor and they forgot to bring the rice to go with it !! I really wanted to love this place haven’t been there in 30 years and I will never go back don’t waste your money even the desserts were bland!

Been going to the Ironbound for 15 years and tonight’s meal was just pathetic. The service was a complete joke. Saw our waiter maybe 3 times, couldn’t get plates cleared, got given two separate bottles of empty ketchup, and didn’t even get to consider dessert because we never got a menu after waiting for 15 minutes. Two of us got lobsters that were barely a pound, overcooked, and had almost no meat. Really just disappointing overall. Go somewhere else.
