Great clean food at a very reasonable price. Be sure to ask for Vickie to be your server... she's the Best!
Great Chinese food. Pot stickers and hot and sour soup are the tops. Mongolian bee/lamb also very good. No atmosphere if you eat in, but pleasant.
delicious food my favorite place for Mushu and shrimp with lobster sauce!
Tried this place for the first time and loved it. It's fast with lots of variety and even the rice was extra delicious. This is going to be my go-to takeout Chinese food place.
Tired of my own cooking and turned off by delivery services, I stopped for mushu pork and hot and sour soup. It's been a while and I had forgotten how good they are. The soup is some of the best I've ever had and the mushu yummy. I'm pretty sure they make their own pancakes and they sure aren't the pseudo tortillas you get so often. Large portions and really nice people.
I love their foods here. My go to place every other week, I like chicken and prawns combo and kang paw chicken so yummy.
Hunan Village is the best restaurant ever since 2005 been going there and Associate is really take care of there customers. And I have to drive from San Francisco to Oakland just to get our Favorite Or Wonton Soup ,Hot Sour Soup and the Lunch Special is Amazing make your stomach happy. I highly recommend this place to my friends.
Best Chinese food in the area. You can not go wrong with any item. Great family owned restaurant I have been eating with my family and friends the past 25 years. Consistent great tasting food. Best Hot and Sour Soup anywhere. Word of caution, once you eat there you will be hooked and will keep coming.
Always great food, no matter what is ordered. Large portions. Service is friendly and prices are good for the volume of food received. They have lunch specials and a la carte available. Mix and match whatever you want!
Great food, good portion size, clean interior, friendly staff
Excellent food!! Very clean restaurant. Food was very well cooked. Really tasty. Stsff wss nice and friendly. Highly recommend
This is our go-to Chinese restaurant and we've never had a bad meal. (And for to go orders, if you can't find parking, you can call in and they'll bring your order out to your car.) Today it was sizzling rice soup (my oldest's favorite), salt and pepper fish (my favorite), sesame chicken, beef with string bean, and chicken chow mein. My only mistake was asking for the green beans to not be spicy. My mistake and one that I won't make again.
Amazing food, every time I come visit family. My mom and I come to have lunch here. Then we order the Hot and Sour soup, green beans and beef and broccoli to take home. If you like oriental food, don't miss this place. They also offer brown rice if you prefer it over steamed white rice.
One of the little gems in my neighborhood. Everything I eat there is excellent, prices are still reasonable, and people are friendly. It feels like the parents of a friend of yours are cooking you dinner. So what the f are you waiting for, go and stuff your face there, support your local stores, do your part in keeping Oakland alive and from turning into tech-bro city like that other city across the bay. If this place or Sidebar ever closes because you didn't eat there, I will be forever bitter.
If you don’t want MSGs added just tell them when you order and they can leave out of all items. I can definitely taste none. I feel like I can trust this restaurant and that means I’d come back. No MSG makes the food a bit blander, but more natural , and better for me than the experience of MSGs where it plays with my satiety, I can’t stop eating, feel like I need to eat more food after I’ve eaten all the food, and just feel sick in my body after the whole experience.
Steak was perfect. Fries were amazing. Lots of french bread, great atmosphere, ate at the bar, bartender was spot on , will totally recommend and will be bringing family and friends. Be prepared to wait for a seat.
Best chinese restaurant in Oakland. The Crispy Chicken with Hunan Sauce is my absolute favorite and I can't get it anywhere else. Their lunch special deal is an incredible value. I miss sitting down here for lunch and a bowl of their amazing hot and sour soup. Love this place and the owners
My family has been going here for almost 20 years, and for good reason. Amazing dishes, great flavors, very kind folks running the restaurant. A neighborhood staple!
A clean and bright place to have lunch. Fresh veggies. Very friendly staff. Reasonable price and generous portions.
The lunch specials here are phenomenal. I tend to go for the beef over the pork or chicken, but I heard that the lamb is pretty good - will try that next. Their asparagus is thick but deliciously cooked. Any lunch special comes with soup, fried item, hot tea, and slice of orange to close out. Excellent.
A 10/10 experience. The prawns with mixed vegetables lunch special was tasty and a great value. I left satisfied, and the hostess/server/cashier was very friendly.
Hunan Village is an institution on Grand Ave. They’ve been serving delicious, generously portioned Chinese food for decades and still manage to keep their quality up. We regularly order too much food and take it to-go to eat for days after. During the pandemic, takeout orders have been simple and made our Chinese food takeout dinners so much easier. Our typical dishes include: fish & broccoli, salt n pepper fish or tofu, braised tofu, sizzling rice soup, vegetarian pot stickers, shrimp fried rice or chow mein, crispy noodles, mushu pork, sautéed spinach, and sometimes honey walnut prawns. Definitely do not sleep on the dry fried chicken wings. Best in town.
12.70 plus tip out the door for lunch special plus hot tea and sweet and sour soup. Not bad. For the price and generally tasty food a five star should work

Good place for Chinese food. Familiar favorites. Nice space. Nice people. Food is good. Fried ribs are very tasty.
The two of us enjoyed a chicken and prawn lunch special with soup and tea. The soup was delicious, the tea was lovely and the entrees were fresh, well prepared and perfect portions. The service was friendly and there was no rush to order or leave. A thoroughly delightful experience and we will be back to try other dishes.
I don't understand the negative reviews. I was a customer of Hunan Village for over 20 years. The owners sold the business, but don't hold it against the new owners. The food is terrific. I found the food under the new owners as good, if not better than the old owners. The new owners are very friendly. Please give them a chance. The new owners did a facility makeover and I did not notice a change in prices. Just ordered takeout tonight and the food is consistently good and the portions are generous.
Food was SO good! The vegetables were cooked just right - not too raw but not too soft. Perfect. The shrimp was also just right. War Wonton Soup was DELICIOUS and a generous portion. The lunch specials are a very good value. This is a small place with a no frills atmosphere. They focus on the food and all us diners are grateful for that :)
Had the Mongolian Lamb Lunch special. The soup was delicious, and the dish was very good. It came out hot and the vegetables were fresh.
Tasty, GREAT PRICE, satisfying complete meal. One of the last bastions of the affordable lunch anywhere. I'm just grateful places like these still exist in the bay area. We've been going here for years. Consistently delicious, wonderful service and did I mention a bargain? Never had a bad meal ever. It is an Oakland gem.
Boy. Up in Oakland visiting my sister and I stumbled on this place. The green beans with chicken and black bean sauce was superb. So was the bean curd and black mushroom. This place is fully legit
Consistently excellent Chinese take out. Fresh. Very kind family run operation. We have been eating here since 1990! No complaints. Generous servings. Love the War Won Ton Soup!
first time going here and I had a vegetable fried rice, wonton soup and honey walnut shrimp. The ingredients were fresh. The vegetables were crispy. The wontons felt fresh and flavorful 10 out of 10 I could not stop eating.😋😋😋😋
This place is amazing!!! I had accidentally ordered without knowing they were so far from me. I am located in a completely different city and couldn’t have gotten there. I called and explained my situation and they were so understanding. What they then did was offer delivery and the food was still hot and delicious when it arrived!!! I would give 100 stars for them if possible!!! Thank you so much for being so fantastic 💯💕

I recently stopped by a restaurant for a quick lunch and decided to try their lunch special. The special included a main dish, rice with an upcharge option for egg fried rice, a slice of orange, and soup. I opted for the broccoli beef with egg fried rice. While I found the food to be fine and the staff to be friendly, I didn't enjoy the soup's flavor. A thing to note is that they gave me a small fork.
A cozy little restaurant for tasty food without a long wait (I've eaten here before a movie and still made it on time for the show). I enjoy their oolong teapot tea served with every meal, and I love their variety of shrimp dishes like Sweet & Sour Shrimp and Salt & Pepper Shrimp with chili pods. It's great having so many tasty and spicy options on the menu. My father also enjoys their beef and noodle dishes. The one thing I'd critique is that you can't order the tea without ordering a meal.

Good lunch rice plates. A good value! Update: 12-9-24. They put out some new signage out front. they updated the tablecloths, gave it new paint job and new printed menus. I would say the lunch plates have gone up by $.25-$.75 at the most. You still get the same thing: a small cup of hot and sour soup with your rice plate and an orange section. Fortune cookie with your check. They probably charge extra for tea now and there are no chopsticks, just forks. I will say the food is the same quality as it was before it changed hands just a month or two ago. It’s still a neighborhood favorite with many locals!!! Don’t believe the current or recent bad reviews. Because they’re not true!

Fairly standard Chinese restaurant. The hunan beef had bottled sauce and was not spicy at all. The potstickers were standard at best.
Decent. Didn't order anything particularly challenging but fried rice flavoring no better than average. Mix veggies also not bad, but not memorable. Ok for a standard quick takeout.
Maybe it was just my dish, but my food was kind of bland. I got hunan beef, plenty of salt but lacked flavor or sweetness. I didn't taste any garlic, onion, ginger, or aromatics. Felt like I couldnt enjoy it:( Edit: Thank you Hunan Village for responding to my review and hearing me out. I will come back again to try you guys again, next time I'll try something else:)
HALF EMPTY BOXES DONT GO HERE!!!! This restaurant will rip you off and not care! We spend over $70 for 2 HALF EMPTY boxes of mangolian beef, 2 chow mein and 1 fried rice! I live a few blocks aways and called to let them know the mangolian beef boxes were HALF EMPTY hardly any beef and mainly green onions! The lady on the phone said she isn’t going to fix or make it right. They’re a straight rip off! SAVE YOUR MONEY and go somewhere where customers are valued!!!!! These people are scammers!!!!!
If you are alone and want dinner, find some other place. They make clear they don't want your business. No combo dinners at all for singles. Got fried rice entrée and it was not fried or seasoned. Don't bother!
just picked up some hot and sour soup. it was burnt. when i drove back to the office I open the bag and the soup was a dark brown. I really miss the previous cooks and owners.
I went to Hunan Restaurant 5/2018. I ordered shrimp fried rice to go. I thought $9.50 was a little high, but if it's good I am okay. Oh my gosh!!! but when I got home I had about 2 cups of white rice, 3 prawns (not the small shrimp),a little egg, and a handful of peas, no carrots. Nowadays you cannot trust Chinese take out food. I have tried the place across the street and had to take back everything I bought. If you are not eating in the restaurant, can see what you are getting and before you pay, do not order food to go at Hunan Village on Grand Avenue. As far as ordering Chinese food to go, I will not do that. I recommend sitting down, ordering your food, if it does not look right, get up and leave. Senfing food back is not a good idea no matter what kind of food you order. Good service, but thats all.
Hunan Village ripped me off. Let me explain how I was ripped off. I stopped in one night about a month ago, really hungry for Chinese food, and expected to dine in since there were 2 tables at which people were still eating. But the female employee at the front reception counter, who was busy tabulating receipts, gruffly said w/o looking at me, "No dine in; we are closing." So I asked if I could order something to go, and she said, still w/o looking at me, "Yes," but didn't even give me a menu. I asked if they make a certain Chinese dish, and she looked at me for the 1st time, and said still gruffly, "No." I sat down and noticed this elderly woman wearing an apron & mask walking around the restaurant, and asked her if I could order something. She was a lot friendlier and gave me a menu, and I ordered a pork dish w/tofu & vegetables priced at around $16. I waited for about 10-15m., got my order, paid for it & left. So, when I opened up the big take-out carton containing my dish in my car, and started sifting thru it, I could barely find any pieces of pork; it contained mostly large pieces of onions, some bok choy, a few large pieces of mushroom, carrots and a few large pieces of dried tofu. And the few pieces of pork I did find were very small. Basically, I paid $16 for an onion dish w/some tofu & veggies. You won't find me going back to Hunan Village ever again!
I felt cheated today when I was charged two dollars extra for a small scoop of fried rice that used day old rice, w/o advice. Then my Mongolian beef, although good was loaded with green onions that weren’t fresh. I was told this restaurant has been sold, but the manager tells me it’s to the same family. I am not sure what this means. Then besides the waitress helping me, the woman who claims to be a manager would come by from time to time, identifying herself as a manager. I am not sure what her higher rank is supposed to do for me? In addition, I had to walk back to get my receipt, as I was uncertain that I would charged on my credit card what I signed for. The water & tea were watered down. The waitress kept trying to take my plate while I was interrupted to sign the check. The complimentary bowl of hot sour soup was not hot sour soup & it was only a few soup spoon full. I had not eaten there for a long time. Today, I felt like eating out & I should eaten elsewhere.
Change in ownership and the quality has completely fallen off. The staff is rude, waited longer than we ever for our food to arrive. Folks came in after us and were served first. The prices are much higher and they have controlled the servings to smaller plates. The Crab Rangoon didn’t taste the same, like they added something different that couldn’t put my tastebuds too. The shrimp if that what it was, whole lot of breading no shrimp! The appetizer platter was over cooked, their special garlic noodles came with green beans (??????) not much favor. The spicy greens are missing everything, the crunch factor was there, meaning cooked to perfection. Had to ask for the soup and some water. I’m missing the prior owners. Needless to say good by Hunan Village, you were one of the goats!
Ordered online and they were very busy so I was fine with waiting for my order even though I had been notified that my order was ready via text. Eventually realized my order was never coming because they never had started it. Definitely do not plan on returning. Can understand if I had to wait a few minutes for an order. But absolutely unacceptable that I waited 30 minutes and the ordered never came
Had a hankering for Chinese food and even though we already have an affinity for Shan Dong and Becky’s in Rockridge, really wanted to try something local and new. We were terribly disappointed with the lack of flavor (bland) and the copious amount of oil in the food. The staff is nice but don’t think we will come back.
