Pretty chill and inviting place. Love the hidden improv theater. Loved the new food items.
Always tend to spend a few hours to hang out with friends playing board games and always a good time. They have a satisfactory selection of snacks to munch on and some beer to choose from. Just be sure to lock up your car nearby!
Super cool place! Staff is amazing! You can even sit down and play games, buy beer, tea, snacks, listen to great music! ALSO!!! There is a tiny hidden theater inside! I'm definitely going to become a regular! Fun for all ages! No joke! I took my friend and mother to watch "Night of the demons" part one and two! I had an amazing time.
One of the best card spots and greatest Places to play games, card games, and have fun. Have a drink have a snack. Look at books, open up packs. Listen to some great music, you can even have your own room if you want privacy. They have improv nights which is pretty sweet. The community is very nice, everyone down to earth, you will feel welcome immediately.
Great spot for playing board games! Attentive staff that genuinely like games and are happy to give recommendations. Good beer selection too and a great way to select one at random if you are indecisive. Overall great place!
This is such a cool find. Great staff, great atmosphere, and tons of games offered here. It's definitely worth checking out if you like tabletop games.
This place is great! Tons of free games, tons of good beer (and non beer) drink selections. Steven was helpful and personable. Really happy we stumbled upon this place. Will definitely be back and bring friends! If you like, or want to try board games, stop by. As always, support your FLGS!
Such a fantastic casual community spot for gaming and group gatherings. Laid back and welcoming, staff is so kind and funny! Good beer and while selection. A great space with a good home game collection for playing if you didn’t bring a game. Great merch selection from games and puzzles to stickers, pins, and magnets. Have been three times now and each experience is fantastic!
Fun and welcoming place for table top gamers. The staff was very friendly. There’s a great selection of new games for sale as well as a very large collection of games you can try out. Craft beer, wine and soda selections. There’s also a performance space in the back, they were doing improv back there but I didn’t get there in time to grab a ticket. Very inviting. Very welcoming. I’d highly recommend.
I've been to the Black Potion three times now and each time has been great. The rental rooms have been nice with fans included to keep them cool. Definitely recommend popping in and grabbing a drink and board game with friends.
Black potion is alwahs super fun! It's a great place to chill, lots of board game options and great items available to purchase. The theatre in the back is cool too, they host regular improv comedy shows and other great events.
Great atmosphere. Amazing place to hang out and just have a drink or bring your whole D&D crew and utalize one of their game rooms. Even just playing a game of Magic Commander in the main area. They have a decent selection of board games and TTRPG books for sale and I always roll for drink every time Im there.
This is my favorite tabletop shop ever! Super great atmosphere and amazingly friendly staff. They have a deal to rent a private room for only $40 which can be paid by purchasing items accumulate in total to the cost of the room! That's gotta be the best deal ever! And they have plenty of drink options and tabletop supplies!
Obsessed and will be coming back 🤩 the selection of board games, snacks, and atmosphere was awesome and I also loved all the comfortable seating to play games in small or large groups. They also host events and have discounted games for purchase. Borrowing games to play at the location was free though.
This was the first time I was here. I didn't get anything to eat, that is why its not 5. They do have options though. They do have a number of tables to play on. There is even a theater where they have shows and play movies. The lighting is not too bright. It is pretty loud but that is typical of people having fun. They have about 5 rooms you can use privately. I am not sure of you have to reserve them and if it costs money. They are starting a ladies club which was pretty fun.
Lots of open space for gaming and very helpful staff who took the time to help explain some of the board games to us. If you're looking for a laid-back spot to check out some new board games and maybe get a drink they have a great selection. The shop is still new so game inventory will only increase, definitely worth a check out.
Fantastic little shop with a great game and beer selection and wonderful staff. Text them if you want to reserve a room for your group. My only complaint is that the building could use a bit of TLC in some parts, but the old building is worth it to have them so close to home.
This is THE place for gaming & more in SA! A "one stop" FLGS. Why does it deserve the accolades? Let me count at least 7 ways: (1) well curated, decent sized stock of games and puzzles for purchase. They will order like most places as well. (2) large and expansive open area for group gaming (no charge) and some private rooms (nominal charge), (3) as good as can be expected free gaming library (Heat and Dune Uprising besides a host of others)--no library membership fees. (4) other free and nominal fee events in the theatre in the back (live improv, free movies, etc.), (5) one of the very few place in town where wine and and outstanding craft beer selection are served, though minors are welcome and often present. Very kid friendly as well. (6) one of the few shops located insides Loop 410, near West Side, in the cool and lively Art Deco District on Fredericksburg Road. Open 12 pm to 12 am 6 days a week. (7) a warm and welcoming staff and proprietor (who is there most of the time) who demonstrate, more than ANY other store in town, a genuine love and inclusivity for the local gaming COMMUNITY in all its diversity. I would say that for many/most gamers, feeling that "sense of belonging" and hospitality dictates more where we will go than proximity and selection. This trait more than all the others makes Black Potion really stand head and shoulder above the others.
My family and I had a fantastic time at Black Potion. Enrique personally helped us select a few new games based on our skill and interests. He even taught us the game and walked us through the first couple rounds. The bartender was very helpful and encouraged us to “roll for beer” using the dice to help select a beer from their great list of 80 beers. Great place for anyone looking to spend some time playing some table games with friends/family.
The potions are definitely good here. Perfect place to go if you lack the space to host game night. Staff are very kind, professional and knowledgeable of all their products. The private rooms are perfect to ether keep noise in or out of the rooms. I am so glad that San Antonio finally has a tavern where adventures may gather to revel in their quests.
Fun place to have a good time, lots of games to play.
Nice selection of games and gaming stuff. I bought $25 worth of stickers. There was improv upstairs and a cool "roll for your drink" board if you can't decide what to drink. The owner/manager who rang me up was very friendly.
It was a lovely, cozy place for trying new games or just hanging out with friends! Didn't try much of the food but did order a loaded tots and it was satisfying! Definitely recommend
This is hands down the best game store in town. The staff is friendly and welcoming, and the environment is ideal for hanging out to play games with friends. I especially appreciate the quality (and quantity) of the tables available for playing games, and the selection of games to play.
What a nice establishment! They have a ton of beer options and some wine. They have a large selection of games that people can play or buy. They even have a theatre where the so movies or improv shows. Parking is in the gravel lot across the street for first timers like us who were confused where to park. My wife and I enjoy the visit and will definitely be back.
Such a cool spot to hang with friends, play games, and enjoy drinks. Fun, laid back atmosphere and a big beer selection. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Lots of games to borrow and try out, but also a good selection of new games for purchase.
One of the best spots in SA! A great place to chill and play games with friends. Great for all ages and they recently started serving food. Their vegetarian options are creative, tasty, and filling.
Food is hard to rate lower than 5 stars when its all prepackaged snacks lol. Chips, jerky, fruit snacks, etc. The drink selection was massive and they had a ton of nonalcoholic options as well. The board game selection was stellar, with lots of options for cooperative and competitive games. Plenty of space for you to run tabletop games, and supplies available for purchase! I wish I had a place like this closer to home!
This gamer bar is on the corner of W Lynwood Ave and Fredricksburg. There is limited parking in the front of the building but plenty in back of the building next door. We were invited by the Esoteric Cult of Horror to see a secret double feature hosted by Video Dungeon. Their movie room was very spacious, had great sound and seemed to have approximately a 50 person capacity. Black Potion hosts many secret screenings that you can stay informed about by joining their Facebook group. The main feature of the business is the gaming space they provide to avid role playing gamers. In addition to having a dozen tables in the main room they also have private rooms as well. They have snacks as well as quite a nice selection of beers available and if you’re feeling adventurous, you can role a die to have fate choose one for you. Their ladies room offers free feminine products which was thoughtful and something I haven’t seen anywhere else. I would come back just to have a couple beers in the relaxed atmosphere.
Great place to stop in! We’ve gone to two other coffee locations this trip, and this is our fav so far! Vibes + service + coffee = happy customer. Got the cacoa mocha ☕️ and it’s very balanced! Not too sweet, not bitter. Yummy! Crystals are fun to look at while you wait (though a bit pricy). Would definitely come back!
Brilliant spot. Great selection of board games to play, top notch craft brew selection, carefully curated rpg and board games to buy, friendly owner, chillax place to meet up with fellow gamers...or just to have a beer and read. Stay in the Deco District 4ever! We need more centralized gaming places.
Very fun! This is a great hang out spot with lots of games to choose to play or you can bring your own and utilize their huge tables to really spread out. They also have an excellent selection of beverages (alcoholic and nonalcoholic) and will allow you to bring in food from outside. We ordered pizza from Deco which was excellent and a quick walk to pick up which barely delayed game play. Use their die system to try new drinks! Their staff is also quite knowledgeable about the games you may like based on what you like to play at home. Plus, there is improv on Friday and Saturday nights in their back theater. Definitely worth trying out if you like to play board games!
Great place to go to play games, do a date night, study or work if you need a change of scenery and enjoy some drinks or snacks. Can’t wait to see what else the owner does with the stage/movie room.
Great place to meet with friends and play board games. Lots of table space and a variety of games to choose from!
Amazing selection of games to play off the self why you enjoy a beer. An equally amazing selection of board games to purchase. Friendly staff. Rooms to rent for private gaming groups. And apparently also a theater for improv and movies

Comfy establishment for playing some tabletop games and taking it easy.
Great community space. I've been here to buy gifts, see a one woman show, do crafts with friends and do a D&D campaign. It was a perfect setting for all 4 of those occasions. These kind of spaces are so good for san antonio ❤️ rock on Black Potion
This place is an absolute gem. We came here on a whim and the atmosphere is good, the food was fantastic and the board game selection for in store play is respectable. I will absolutely be coming back.
They food is simple fare, but the atmosphere is great for meeting with friends. My book club meets there and it was easy to talk. They also have a theater room I have yet to try, but will soon.
This place was super cool, tons of games (and I mean TONS, hundreds of card games, board games, role playing games, anything you could think of, they had it). They have a nice selection of wine and beer, and some sodas as well. The absolute only piece of criticism I have is to maybe offer water cups/free water (if possible) to patrons. I had an amazing time either way and I highly recommend coming and checking it out. It’s in a really cute art deco district area. Also, the owner and bartenders were super cool and welcoming. We will be coming back 🃏
This is a great place to hang out for table top gamers! Had a pleasant experience visiting for the first time recently. Not as loud as you may think at peak time, and you're able to bring your own games or use community ones. Also has a shop to buy games at great prices and some local/indie wares. Sells a great variety of beverages, both alcoholic and not, and some snacks, but you can also bring your own! Staff is super nice, friendly, and happy to help get anyone situated. Definitely a place to support and hang out - excited to become a regular here. Just be sure to get there before peak times to park, as parking is on the side of the building and fills up fast.
Went to this location for a book club and it’s a very cool place. There are books and games and separate rooms that can be reserved for groups. Staff was very friendly
Great place for weekly meetups with board game friends. Worth a visit if not just for the beer itself, huge selection and unique drinks you can’t find everywhere. Staff is knowledgeable and kind.
Big fan of this place! Rooms for rent if you need privacy for those intense dnd sessions. It's $50 but anything your party buys while there goes towards that amount. Some small snacks and plenty of drink options both non alcoholic and alcoholic. They have no issues if you bring in a pizza. I honestly recommend this place to everyone. They have the general room where you can snag an open table no charge. Beware though because this place is POPULAR so if you have any noise sensitive people you are better off renting a room.

The friendly freaks of Black Potion welcome one and all! Geeky gamers, craft beer guzzlers, and laptop loners now have a pet place, a fourth space to chillax in. No cover charge, just buy a beer or soft drink or perhaps a board game.
Really nice place for gaming. And they do offer some alcohol drinks but very limited. They do not have a liquor license so do not go for that. I dont drink to much beer so I could not recommend much on their beer and wine selection.
Great place to hang out, though it gets kinda warm in some of the rooms.
It's kind of loud which can make playing games and communicating with friends a little bit difficult, especially for neurodivergent people. They have rooms you can rent though which is awesome. The food is more like a snack bar but they do have a variety of snacks and drinks for sale.

Paid 12$ for a little glass of sweet something that had no taste of alcohol! So for 2 drinks we paid 30 with tip! Then the topper, the lady, didn't even bring us our drinks! She gave me a look....hay come get your drinks....we are not coming back....we will not recommend this place!
