Opinions de Saffron Indian Bistro San Carlos
Delicious, high-quality Indian food that preserves the authentic flavors of North Indian cuisine without overwhelming heat. The dishes are well balanced and thoughtfully prepared. I tried the brunch thali which was generous, good variety of dishes, and very filling. The chaat starters were excellent, and the biryani is a must-order! deeply flavorful and aromatic. Haven’t tasted such a delicious biryani in a long time. Easily one of the better-quality Indian restaurants in this area. The ambiance is clean, spacious, and comfortable, with outdoor seating available. Service is polite and friendly. Overall, very good value for money.
Every single item I ordered was beyond delicious. The butter ODS- Butter Chicken has the smoky tandoor flavor and is reminiscent of how it would taste in an upscale establishment in New Delhi. It's not overly greasy or sweet. Perfect balance of all the flavors. The Tandoori Chicken is charred outside but succulent and juicy inside. It is not overly spicy where that's the only flavor you taste. Extremely well made. The Channa Masala tastes like what you will find at an any famous Channa Bhatura place in North India without the excessive spice and grease. Even the raita was extremely declicous. I've never had raita like that. It almost tastes like Dahi Bhalle without the bhalle. The food is perfectly balanced in every way and authentic. I’m lucky to have this as an option. I saw some people complain about the quantity and price, I would just like to say that the quality of the food and ingredients more than justifies the price. Big respect to the staff for their hard work and talent. You took me down the memory lane.
This is one of my favorite north indian restaurants. It has never disappointed us in our several visits. Today's was no exception. The service is friendly and professional, always with a smile. Ambience is great. Love the photos they have up on the walls. The place is not huge, but the way seating is setup it doesn't seem too cramped. Food was awesome, as usual. The Guava, Ginger, Lemon with fizz, aptly named Amrit, was not too sweet and tasty. Pooris have kasoori methi, which is a great idea and we will try it at home too. Halwa was "rich", as it is made in Ghee and yummy. Chole were perfectly cooked in Chana Masala, with spices thoroughly soaked in. Lehsuni Saag Paneer had ample, but not overpowering garlic. Best part was it was spicy and hot just with that garlic tadka. Chef could have been generous with paneer. :-p because the fresh paneer was in demand on the table. And the bread basket? Laccha paratha was awesome, and so was the garlic naan - which we loved eating as it is.
We love this place. The food is amazing, even my 7 and 11 year old boys love it and ask to come here. They have Indian brunch on the weekend. And they also have a fresh chopped salad which is not common in Indians restaurants so a good balance. My son asked me to also write that they have really good Poori and great Butter Chicken.
What a hidden little gem - they switched over a few years ago from a buffet to a more traditional restaurant and the food is delicious! The wait staff and everyone at the restaurant was so warm and welcoming. The general tso’s cauliflower, the tikka salmon, chicken tikka masala, and the naan’s were all delicious!
A delicately spiced excellently prepared Indian meal. Unusually in the area the half tandoori chicken was freshly cooked in a genuine tandoor oven...absolutely delicious. Onion bhaji, also not common around here was great, as was the baingan bhata. Definitely worth a visit
Host allowed us to choose our table. First positive thing . Waiter who took our order was so nice and cool. Food was delicious. And presentation was amazing. Small but cozy restaurant we came all the way from North bay and it didn’t disappoint us at all. Closest best Indian restaurant to Half bay moon ..
great food, though definitely on the expensive side (we came here for team lunch). Lots of veg options (except for the biryani, which is… unfortunate), the lamb IS HALAL (!), That roomali roti was huge and so tasty with everything, and my favorite gravy would probably be the one that came with the koftas! We had kulfi for desert, which was delicious. I apologize for my highly unaesthetic photos - it was so funny trying to get these pics in front of my poor unsuspecting coworkers.
Upscale and lively Indian fine dining spot right in downtown San Carlos. The space feels modern, polished, and intentionally curated, with a smaller focused menu built around quality dishes rather than quantity. I tried the dahi aloo puri to start. It was tasty, but leaned a bit too sweet for my preference compared to similar versions elsewhere. For the main, I went with the home-style chicken curry and tandoori roti. The curry was flavorful, well-balanced, and comforting in a way that felt both elevated and familiar. Staff was professional and attentive throughout the experience. I’d definitely return to try more dishes on the menu.
We ordered from their weekend lunch menu which had a decent set of vegetarian options. The food was not excessively oily nor was it made with excessive masalas which was a big win for us. The ingridients were fresh and the over all dish was delicious. Be mindful of their Chai, they say it's for one but in my opinion it's sufficient to serve 3 😅
I loved my dining experience at Saffron. Upon entering we were greeted warmly by Anna. The Chef Romeo was super helpful in helping us decide what to order. He embodied the service attitude. We might just go back for the service and Romeo. The ambiance was beautiful. We’d have preferred to sit outside if it was a little warmer. We ended up getting the sizzling black pepper chicken, garlic naan, lamb kosha, rajasthani chat, gulab jamun. While they all were delectable, my favourites were the sizzling chicken and the gulab jamun. Highly recommend this restaurant!
4.5 stars, rounded up to 5. Delicious food, attentive and friendly service. I ordered the lunch plate (which was available even on a Saturday) and the overall amount of food was reasonable though below typical gut-busting American portion sizes (no one in my party had leftovers, in contrast with our common experience at a lot of restaurants). All the dishes in my combo meal (pictured) were delicious, though be warned that the lamb is QUITE spicy and I wasn't asked in advance how spicy I wanted it. In fact, nothing about the lunch specials is customizable, which was a bit of a shame because I had a hankering for garlic naan and the waiter apologized that no substitutions could be made :(. That aside, this was a lovely meal, with all the dishes well-balanced and very flavorful and the meat quite tender. At $26 (not including tax and tip), my meal was probably on the higher end of Indian restaurants even in the Bay Area, but I think it was reasonable for the quality and variety. (I was also happy to see that this restaurant *hasn't* gotten on the "let's abuse customers with bogus surcharges" bandwagon!)
I made a 1230 reservation but we arrived early. We got seated promptly. The decoration is modern, clean and bright. We ordered general tso cauliflower, lamb curry, chicken biryani, and garlic naan. The cauliflower exceeded my expectation. The other dishes were good too. The server is friendly and the restaurant is quiet enough for two of us to carry on good conversation without yelling. All in all. I would recommend coming again.
Great place. Have ordered from here but never dined-in. Great location with comfortable and attractive seating. The interior gets great sunlight. Went for lunch with my wife and really enjoyed the Jafrani Kofta tali. Vegetarian options were incredible. Mango lassi is slightly different in a slightly foamy, delicious consistency way.
One benefit of living in the bay area is to be able to enjoy so many delicious ethnic foods because all the best come here to compete and serve. I used to go to Indian Buffets for lunch to try out all different kinds of dishes they had to offer. There are 2 regions Northern and Southern, one may have richer food than others with yogurt and heavy cream which I’m allergic to, others are quite spicy but tasty. My sister took me to this place, northern food, and we had a greatest lunch. There’s no parking, so I had to park on the street a few blocks away. It’s after 1PM so the lunch rush may be over, the place is empty and quiet. Quite clean and airy. The server was quite patient and helpful with me for asking about all the dishes. We ordered butter chicken, spinach vegetable dish, spicy chicken, rice and garlic bread. I thought the butter chicken would be creamy and rich but it was just right and tasty. My spicy chicken was not too spicy and delicious, flavorful perfectly with tender long grain rice that I love, we ordered 2 bowls of rice and finished all LOL. The spinach dish was amazingly excellent. The prices are quite reasonable. Although I thought the dishes are a little small but the sauces are so good with rice and bread. Never had a la cart Indian Food before. Definitely will take my family for dinner when my daughter is back from NY. My son doesn’t like curry but I’m sure something here will please him.
The best Indian food we have had in the bay area. We went twice with two groups of friends and all of us liked it. Food is really tasty and unlike in many other Indian restaurants, not overwhelmed with chilly, therefore not spicy (hot) but spicy in the proper way. Excellent balance of the taste and relatively quick service. Price wise the dishes cost above average but not overly pricey. This is now our go to place whenever friends visit us and want to taste Indian foods.
Cozy ambience, serving staff is very polite and checked in our meal often. Situated right by the San Carlos, parking in front of the restaurant might be difficult but there's enough parking around the block. Coming to food - food is uniquely presented. Chaat was beautifully presented on a papad with microgreens and butterfly cutout, but chana jor garam in the chaat was a little soggy. Latte art on the malai kofta was great, and it tasted very rich. Kulfi also tasted good!
A great place to go for lunch as their lunch deal is quite comprehensive. Do note that the prices for their food are on the more expensive side given the small looking portions but the food is surprisingly filling. I will say that their ODS Butter Chicken is the best dish we had, but their General Tso Cauliflower has a unique taste. Their Roomali Roti wasn't as good as I expected and would recommend the Naan instead. Each dish has a great presentation, the plates and napkins look great, and the service is impeccable!
