Opinions de Blue Ocean Sushi San Diego
As we visited La Jolla, San Diego and we took our fur baby with us. So we want to find a restaurant that’s pet friendly so we stumbled into this sushi restaurant located at an outdoor mall called Westfield. The restaurant even let our fur baby dining inside which was very nice. Some of the sashimi selection was 50% off such as Salmon, Yellowtail, Albacore, Blue Fin and Fatty Tuna. It was a Monday we came early dinner so there was also happy hour menu very decent. My sake bottle was only $5. Staffs were great. As for parking the first 2 hours is free. After that I wasn’t paying attention how much each hour cost after the first 2 hours. Plenty of parking spot on a Mon in parking structure. Glad we found this pet friendly restaurant.
Dog friendly patio and good sushi! We ate here on a Friday evening, and they were able to seat us right away (around 5:30 or so, when we left it was much busier). The patio seating isn't in the nicest place, it felt like being in a hallway a little bit. Also the wind started coming through pretty strong as the sun set so we ended up getting a little cold. Luckily, that was the worst part of the meal. Service was very quick. Our waiter had lots of good recommendations. It was cool they had fresh ground wasabi, I've never seen that on a menu anywhere else. My wife and I both got the cheapest of the chef specials and it did not disappoint! The crab rolls use real crab, which I don't know if I've ever seen that anywhere else. All the fish tasted very fresh. We were both impressed with the quality of the fish. The price point of $34 was also really good, most chef selections like that tend to be a bit more expensive at other places. Ultimately I could definitely see eating here again. It feels a bit tucked away in a corner even though it's on one of the main squares in the mall, so I wonder if that's why it doesn't seem that busy when we've looked before? The quality of the sushi will bring us back for sure.
I believe this new restaurant will be a popular spot! They are still in soft opening. We walked in on a Friday lunch time. No waiting time and we got a nice seat. The foods here are very very delicious comparing to their prices. Can you believe the big piece of salmon Kama only costs $7.5? My husband giant chef selection sushi plate is $34 with two pieces of bluefin tuna! The restaurant atmosphere is nice, pretty well decorated, kind of modern and luxurious. The only thing is they wrong calculated the price on the bill and we found out...
★★★★★ Blue Ocean Sushi is hands down one of the best sushi spots around! The fish is always incredibly fresh, and their generous cuts of sashimi make every visit a treat. One of my favorites is the toro—so buttery and rich, it melts in your mouth. The quality here is top-notch, and you can really taste the difference. Whether you’re a sushi lover or just looking for a great meal, this place never disappoints. Highly recommend!
I had the pleasure of dining at Blue Ocean Sushi & Grillrecently, and it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. The atmosphere was elegant and inviting, setting the perfect tone for a memorable evening. Every bite was bursting with flavor and thoughtfully plated. What truly stood out, however, was the impeccable service. The staff was attentive without being overbearing, and they were knowledgeable about the menu, offering helpful recommendations. It’s rare to find such a seamless combination of top-tier food and exceptional service. I left feeling completely satisfied and already planning my next visit. Highly recommend this restaurant for anyone looking for a sophisticated dining experience.
A happy Happy Hour! Blue Ocean deserves a much longer review but they put me into a small food coma, not that I’m complaining. The only thing that didn’t hit perfectly for me was the grilled eggplant, which I thought got lost in the breading and the oyster sauce, maybe it needs an even lighter drizzle of sauce? That aside, their nigiri is spot on and the Spanish mackerel stole the show with the fattiness of the fish allowing the gentle, oceany flavor to roll around in your mouth.
A Great New Sushi Spot at Westfield UTC Had a really solid experience at Blue Ocean Sushi & Grill, one of the newer spots at Westfield UTC. From the food quality to the service, they nailed the key parts of what makes a meal memorable. Food Rundown: • Agedashi Tofu ($10): Best I’ve had so far. The crust was thick and actually crunchy—rare for this dish—and the tofu was cut perfectly. Broth was flavorful without being overly salty. • Panko Soft Shell Crab ($12): Impressive size, lightly fried, not greasy at all. Honestly double the size I expected. • Rice Crunch Spicy Tuna ($14 for 3 pcs): Perfect combo of textures and flavors—crunchy rice base, soft tuna, spicy jalapeño, and tangy sauce. Everything came together beautifully. • Fried Rice w/ Chicken ($16): I was too full to eat much, but what I did try had big chunks of chicken and wasn’t greasy. Way better than the usual egg-and-rice mix. • Chef’s Choice – Ocean Way ($43): A great variety of sushi. One piece had a truffle oil twist that caught me off guard—in the best way. Drinks: Started with a sparkling wine and tried their Tokyo Peach and Cherry Blossom cocktails. Big drinks with a solid alcohol pour—definitely not watered down. Service: The host gave us an accurate 10-minute wait time and checked in often. We were seated and helped by Jasmine, who was excellent—attentive but never overbearing. Everything we needed was handled quickly and with a great attitude. Atmosphere: Indoor decor was on point—oceanic wall tiles and a blue whale mural made the space stand out. Lighting was perfect for dinner: dim but bright enough to read the menu without using your phones flash light. Comfortable temperature and a good mix of table sizes, including space for large parties. Outside: limited seating but a cozy waiting area with fire pits and heaters. Service Dog Note: We brought our service dog, and staff made no issue of it at all—we were treated with respect and felt welcome the whole time. Just a quick PSA: if you’re bringing a service animal, they should be calm, well-trained, and not disrupt the business or other diners. Ours stayed quiet and out of the way, and it helped make the experience seamless. Overall Value: Very impressed by the portion sizes, quality, and service. It felt like a thoughtful, elevated sushi experience—without being pretentious. Definitely somewhere I’d return to. Thanks, Blue Ocean. Looking forward to round two.
We ate here because of the great sushi and dog friendly patio. We ordered the grilled hamachi kama, rainbow spider roll, yellowtail jalapeno roll, lemon roll, and hand rolls. The food and price was reasonable for being at UTC. I would definitely come back and try more items and drink some sake.
Food was amazing!! Big portions and great service. Fish is delectable.
Absolutely love the place and overall service! We went in on Sunday night for dinner and it’s wasn’t super busy! Food: We ordered vegetable tempura, Shisoto peppers, fried soy sushi, sea urchin sashimi and madeline roll. The food was superb and the sushi was plenty! The appetitizer were less in quantity, just five pieces for tempura Service: Super sweet and courteous staff! Quite quick and even though the restaurant was closing up in half an hour they didn’t rush us and let us enjoy our meal! Atmosphere: Loved the ambience and overall great! Definitely recommend!
Wow they actually has great sushi. Best sushi ever in San Diego. Chef's choice is definigely affordable price and great quality. Uni was extremely expensive though. $22 for 2 pieces, still had phenomenal quality. Overall perfect sushi and sashimi
We got Rainbow, Marine Boy, and Lemon Roll. Lemon Roll was absolutely amazing. I also really loved the Marine Roll. The Rainbow alao was really good, especially by adding a little bit of lemon juice. The overall experience was great.

My partner and I were starving after a long outing so we visited this restaurant last minute. This was probably the best decision we made; the food was delightful! We both love sushi and find ourselves remembering how delicious their dishes were. For reference we ordered the Playboy Roll and the Crunch Shrimp (including some miso soup for starters). Also, the hostess and servers were super kind, we appreciated that a lot. The atmosphere was enjoyable! Definitely coming back.

Me and my husband Brendan stopped in for a quick lunch and we’re so glad we did. We ordered the TNT roll and my go-to rainbow roll (I get it everywhere we go) and both were super fresh and full of flavor. My husband said the spice on his roll was perfect, not too much, just enough to give it a kick. It wasn’t very busy since we came in a little earlier, which was actually really nice. The place was clean with a nice open layout that felt refreshing, kind of like the sushi. We also shared a Tractor lemonade, which was light and super refreshing. Our server Gaby was great. She was friendly, helpful, and had really good customer service without being over the top. We’ll definitely be back. Everything from the food to the atmosphere made this a solid lunch spot.
A Japanese chain restaurant, and this time we visited the UTC branch. First, we were drawn to their Ishiyaki Hot Stone—it was visually appealing, and the meat was incredibly tender and flavorful. It paired well with the sauce and salt, though the smoke was quite intense. I was practically eating with tears in my eyes 🥲. We also ordered the chef's selection, the Blue Way, which was generously portioned with thick, fresh cuts of meat. The two dishes were just enough to satisfy the two of us, costing $75 for two people—a reasonable price. The restaurant ambiance was lovely, and we sat in a semi-alfresco spot, which was particularly comfortable. It was a truly chill and beautiful meal~
Came here for an early dinner on a Friday afternoon. This place is next to Macy’s at UTC mall. Parking is free for 2 hours. We were seated right away upon walking in. We were handed the menu and they were wet. The saucer on our table was dirty. The spicy edamame was okay. The fatty tuna was very good. Tasted fresh and melted in my mouth. The lemon roll was disappointing. Last time we came here, I ordered this and remembered it to be tasty and fresh. The yellowtail jalapeno roll was pretty good.
We had the “Sushi Omakase” which was a pretty good deal- everything was good except for the uni which tasted weird and not in a good way. The salad was good too
They have a pretty good happy hour nigiri option that comes with 7 nigiri pieces and a miso soup. The fishes I had were somewhat fresh. Once we tried their regular lunch menu and their prices were pretty good compared to the portion of each dish. In general it is a nice sushi place compared to other sushi places nearby. Our third time here, we tried Ishiyaki hot stone steak! It was a great experience, good meat and sauces with a relatively good price!
Blue Ocean Sushi & Grill is tucked into the corner of a popular shopping mall, conveniently close to the parking lot. Despite being a Saturday night, the restaurant wasn’t too busy, providing a relaxed dining experience. The establishment combines Japanese sushi with a touch of new American style, and the modern yet simple decor creates a neat and inviting atmosphere. What We Tried ISHIYAKI HOT STONE This dish was a showstopper! It featured premium flat iron steak sliced thinly for tableside grilling on a Japanese-style hot stone. The sizzling fire beneath the stone made grilling both fun and interactive. The steak was tender, and the provided sides—salt, pepper, sesame oil, and house yakitori sauce—offered great customization for seasoning. The yakitori sauce paired especially well with the steak, adding a rich, smoky flavor. GRILLED KAMA We opted for the Salmon Kama, as Hamachi was unfortunately unavailable. The salmon was cooked to perfection, with a crispy skin and tender, juicy meat. However, the dish leaned on the saltier side, which might not appeal to everyone. FRENCH KISS This unique sushi-like dish skips the rice and instead uses krab and avocado as its base, topped with albacore, garlic mustard, spicy mayo, and a chili drop. The flavors were bold and indulgent, and the creamy crab base offered a refreshing twist on traditional sushi rolls. AMBERJACK CARPACCIO This elegant dish featured six pieces of Hamachi sashimi with ponzu, yuzu oil, jalapeño, horseradish, black salt, and puffed farro. The jalapeño and puffed farro added a satisfying crispy texture, while the combination of citrusy ponzu and creamy yuzu oil enhanced the fresh, rich flavor of the fish. RAINBOW SPIDER ROLL This roll was packed with soft shell crab, krab, cucumber, and avocado, and topped with a colorful mix of bluefin tuna, salmon, albacore, yellowtail, shrimp, horseradish, and black tobiko. The layers of fresh seafood were well-balanced, and the horseradish and tobiko added a unique depth to the flavor profile. Service and Atmosphere The staff were friendly and attentive, frequently checking in to ensure we were enjoying our dining experience. The restaurant also offers an outside dining area, which is dog-friendly, making it a great spot for pet owners to enjoy a meal with their furry companions. Thoughts Blue Ocean Sushi & Grill impressed us with its creative menu and fresh ingredients, blending traditional Japanese techniques with modern influences. The ISHIYAKI HOT STONE was a fun and interactive dish, while items like the French Kiss and Amberjack Carpaccio stood out for their innovation and taste. The Grilled Salmon Kama, while delicious, could use a little less salt to suit a broader palate. Whether you're in the mood for something traditional or a twist on sushi, this spot offers a variety of dishes worth trying. With friendly service and a dog-friendly outdoor area, it’s a great place for a casual, fun meal with a unique dining experience.
Happened to cruise in for happy hour. Service was really great. Attentive and quick. Its in the mall but parking was easy and free. It was 4pm and everyone wearing their jackets in the restaurant. Turn the heat on jeesh! Food wasn’t the best ever but is fair priced for happy hour.

A very nice restaurant. Our food selections - sushi, cooked salmon, and cooked beef - were delicious! Wait staff were attentive but didn't get in the way. The interior was well thought out, tables were spaced out. There was an outside dining/drinks area but it was a cold evening so we sat inside. Deserts were not exciting.....
Sea bass was delicious! Appetizers were wonderful. Prices were high to fair. I'd eat here again! Service was good although we did have to ask for refills of drinks a couple times. Food was served hot. Good time had by all.
Disappointing compared to the Carlsbad location. We came on a Monday for happy hour and tried the nigiri special, the quality was pretty bad. The fish had a mushy, off-putting texture. Honestly, you can find better sushi at H Mart or Mitsuwa. Really unfortunate, as we had high hopes based on their other location.
