What a great quiet spot to visit in the late afternoon. Qe stopped by for a late late lunch and had great food at reasonable prices. Seafood was very fresh and tasty. The greens and veggies were awesome. The menu is fairly expansive. Drinks were awesome. Staff were very pleasant and friendly. There is a great view of the pool, bay and Point Loma from the restaurant and patio. Plus a great nook to sit and watch the boats come and go!

April 2023: Decided to get the breakfast rate for our room and am so glad we did!! My fiance and I had breakfast for the two days we stayed and it was delicious. We had the macha scramble, all American breakfast, chilaquilas, and the breakfast burrito. The service was amazing and the outdoor patio has great views too! Update April 2025: We still love coming here! Just visited with my now husband for my birthday in April! The service and breakfast are always great. You can't beat the view either!

Ribeye was very good and the live music was entertaining during dinner. The cookie & ice cream dessert was great!

Everyone's been lovely, and the food is fantastic!! So far I've had the lobster mac & chs and the Cesar salad with chicken. Yum yum!!

Went back again to one of my favorite places. Very good food bt this time small portions. The usually excellent service was low. It took a very long time just to have a drink delivered. Beautiful view if you dine outside.

This was an excellent choice for breakfast before our whale watching tour. Great service and great food. Sara was a top notch server and deserves special recognition.

During our recent stay at Best Western Plus Island Palms & Marina, we had breakfasts,  drinks & late-night snacks at the onsite bar & grill. Everyone enjoyed breakfast. The coffee was not wonderful, but I tend to be a coffee snob. Everyone also enjoyed their drinks. I didn't like my Cosmo so much but there's also a great wine selection and full bar. Our last night, we had some late-night snacks for a group of us. Everything was prepared well and delicious. We all enjoyed it. There's also a deck out back overlooking the marina that is a really nice place to relax.

I love the blue wave grill Shelter Island. Whether you are having dinner or breakfast, the ambiance is a masterpiece. Sitting by the marina sipping your favorite beverage and looking at all those gorgeous boats, water and rich trees. It’s absolutely tranquil.

Well above average Hotel restaurant with fantastic views of the Marina and hillside. The service was perfect and the food was very good. Would definitely eat there again.

This is one our favorite restaurants in San Diego. I would recommend this place to those who are and aren't staying at the hotel. You can't go wrong whether it's breakfast lunch or dinner- everything we've had has been delicious! For breakfast our favorites are the omelets and machaca bagel. The tableside guac and cocunt shrimp are our favorite lunch specials. For dinner the shortrib and mashed potatoes is delicious! Get a seat outside and take in the breath taking marina view and enjoy the yummy food and drinks!

This is a fantastic resort, right in my own backyard! The Raspberry Gorgonzola Salad was first rate, and the chocolate torte finished off a perfect meal. The entertainment for the evening was Elliott Lawrence, who plays a mean jazz guitar. A perfect night of fun and music!

I absolutely love this place. I’ve been coming here about three years to stay for business and this restaurant is like the best kept little secret. They have a great happy hour and a wonderful atmosphere. The food is terrific and you cannot beat the service with a smile.

It’s upstairs in the check in area. The food is pricey but literally, it’s a hotel. That’s what you should expect. You technically can order in under $47 for two people if you budget. I ordered to go so my husband could sleep in. :) One juice, one coffee, one grandmas pancakes, one meat lovers omelette.

We came here for breakfast and were absolutely delighted with everything—the service, the view from the terrace, and the breakfast itself. The only thing missing was an espresso machine, but that didn’t ruin the experience. A great spot for breakfast. For 4 people, we paid around $100.

Exceptional Service and Delicious Food! We just dined at the Blue Wave bar and grill, and the food was absolutely delicious — fresh, beautifully presented, and full of flavor. What truly made the experience outstanding, though, was the amazing service. Eugene and Z were right there at every turn, checking in on us with such genuine warmth and care. They made us feel completely looked after and welcomed. It’s rare to receive service this attentive and sincere. Jeff is a stand up guy. If you're brave order the Kilinga Bacanora neat. All the food is pretty good. Theresa is amazing as well. If you're flying solo or a small party try the bar or sit outside overlooking the marina and Point Loma.

Overall a really good experience. We were having a staycation here for a few nights and had some vouchers so we visited the restaurant a few times. All the food was good and about average for San Diego prices. Everyone enjoyed their food and the drinks from the bar are very good. Outside has a really nice view but the ambiance inside is nice too. Shout-out to Sara, who made our final day's breakfast a very nice meal.

We had breakfast here after our night at the Best Western Plus. The pancakes were delicious, and the view of the marina put us in a great mood to start the day. We also had the pleasure of meeting Maria, a big thank you to her for her kindness and authenticity. We definitely recommend coming here for dinner as well!

If you're looking for a burger or fish & chips, this is a great spot with good food and and a great view. But if you want more, check the rest of their menu. I had a wonderful rib steak with bone marrow sauce and chimichurri roasted potatoes. My wife ordered MOLCAJETE filled with marinated steak and shrimp, grilled green onions, roasted jalapenos, poblano peppers, baby squash, nopales, and panela cheese served with corn tortillas. She loved it and I ate all the sauce left in the bowl! Excellent!! Our server Justine was very cordial and took care of all our needs. I highly recommend staying at the Best Western Plus Island Palms (especially bay view rooms on upper floors) and enjoying a meal at Blue Wave Bar & Grill.

Ate there for breakfast three times and once for dinner. The food for breakfast was outstanding and the dinner was delicious, as well, with something on the menu for everyone. The service from Jamey in particular was outstanding. I would highly recommend staying at the Island Palms and enjoying the restaurant while eating on the outside deck overlooking the marina.

The service was great, Rachel our server took great care of us. The food was very good. We had a wedge salad, fillet mignon, scallops, brick chicken, beer broth mussels over two different nights. We would definitely return the next time we are in the San Diego area.

This restaurant was fantastic. The service from the waitress Justine was so good that we came back the very next night. We found the food to be amazing. The first night I had the short rib which was extremely tender and full of flavor. The next night I had a wonderful kobi beef burger with guac and bacon. I found the portions to be large and pricing to be reasonable.

Had blueberry pancakes and eggs which were terrific but better than that was the service. We showed up slightly before they officially opened and told Roberto we were in a hurry. He got the chef on it immediately and I was able to actually enjoy my breakfast instead of just shoveling food in my mouth. I would not hesitate to recommend this place to anyone. It's hard to find a combination of great service coupled with great food.

I came into this place with low expectations being that its in a best western! We went before the boat parade. Was able to get our food fairly quickly. The food was actually pretty good. Nothing over the top but everything was cooked properly, nothing was dry or over cooked, came out hot. My only comment was the BBQ swordfish, was cooked pretty well, flaky, tender and no fishiness however they smother it in bbq sauce which didn't quite go with dish! Everything else was good.

Full confession - always stay at Island Palms but only after we stopped in at their bar over 10 years ago and the staff were so friendly. The hotel we had always stayed at previously were always chatting up their regulars and ignoring the tourists.They have a great happy hour but to us, it is the welcoming the staff give to all. Food is good & just changed up their menu. I had the California Reuben & loved it. My husband had his usual, fish tacos. Generous pour on mixed drinks - get your money's worth!

Wow! So happy to be able to have a wonderful Thanksgiving meal at our hotel after driving for 16 hours to San Diego due to a family emergency! Wasn't expecting much, but the meal was fantastic and the service superb. Thank you for being open and offering such a splendid experience. Grateful to those who worked on the holiday.

We held a 21 person party here for breakfast with 4 kiddos in the Bay room on 4th of July weekend. Debbie our waitress was very nice and took great care of our disorganized party! We had a great time and the room is perfect for a large party with kids as it is enclosed and has a beautiful view of the pool and marina! Angela the manager was super accommodating taking our party on a holiday weekend when other hotels restaurants wouldn't, and they were understaffed due to staffing shortages from covid. Definitely a relaxing environment (even with a crazy big party), beautiful views and great staff! Thank you for the great service and taking our party! : - )

Nate the night supervisor, Jeff, Stacey, Sam, and ALL of the staff were more than a pleasure. They bent over backwards to make sure everything was perfect. My wife and I went fishing and vacuum sealed the fish and they froze it for us so we could get it back to Seattle. The food was excellent. Service was more than friendly. We will be staying at the Best Western Island Palms again. I can't say enough about the WHOLE staff. From security to housekeeping to maintenance to the front desk. The hotel and restaurant are a well oiled team that makes it an experience that you should have.

This is a really nice small place with a view of the marina. Lots of windows and classy ambience. We had the blue crab and avocado guacamole. A nice change from normal appetizer. We both had salads which were fresh and crispy. It was slow in the middle of the afternoon and the service was very nice. The beach is right across the street so we took a nice walk afterwards.

This has become our go to place when family comes to visit. It’s adequate yet cozy in size and feels like old Shelter Island. We sit outside and there’s no rush to finish. We’ve enjoyed late breakfast and lunch here and dress casually. Servers are attentive, friendly and smile easily. There’s nice seating inside too on white linens (which we might try for a dinner reservation) as well as a stand alone bar area.

Since more than 10 years , my husband and I always stay at the hotel, and always start our evening to have a drink. Jeff the bartender absolutely adorable with us and each evening we were at the bar. We were please to talk with Willy, as we are French as well, anyway, thank you for the awesome drinks we had Jeff, !!!!!! See you next time, and Merci Willy .

I called the Blue Wave to set up for a party of 25 for lunch after a Navy service at Roscrans for my Uncle. Natalie was very accommodating in such a short notice and made everything wonderful! Excellent service!! I ordered the Shrimp Burger! I was happy I did because it was FABULOUS!! Not what I expected... huge chunks of shrimp made into a patty, topped with pepper jack cheese, fire roasted tomatoes and poblano peppers that were perfection! Highly recommend!!! Served with waffle fries which are my favorite and a coconut mojito. Everyone in our party loved the food!! Definitely coming back to this place!!

They have an outdoor patio with umbrellas facing the marina and pool area, also indoor eating, and an outdoor counter area that faces the marina. The wait staff was kind friendly and efficient. Menu is rather small (but sometimes for me that makes it easier to choose a meal). The food was excellent! I had the burger and you can taste that it was cooked on a grill. The fries were seasoned and crisp. The other dish was the burrito which my family member says was excellent as well. Prices are about average or a bit lower for a restaurant on the water/resort in San Diego

Food was good, dessert was great, and Justine was awesome. We enjoy the music on Friday evening. We had Justine as our waitress three nights in a row and she was attentive to our needs and very friendly and her customer was great.

This place is wonderful! Great food and service the staff is friendly and absolutely wonderful!! Great bar with great drinks thanks to Jeff for taking care of us going back for a 4th time this trip because we like it so much. You can't go wrong here and we were so pleasantly surprised. We will go out of our way to come back

I had a wonderful experience for thanksgiving dinner! The meal consisted of three courses: salad, turkey with cranberry sauce, potatoes and gravy, green beans and stuffing, and pumpkin pie for dessert. The salad was so tasty, the turkey wasn’t dry at all, and the cranberry sauce was so sweet! It wasn’t runny, it was on the chunky side. The service I received was exceptional. The servers (yes, plural!) would check on me every so often, and they were very pleasant, always walking around with smiles on their faces!

We ate here several times at different times of the day during our stay. The service was always excellent and the outdoor seating had fantastic views. Sitting by the marina and drinking some great beer, we truly miss going here. The salmon and short rib pasta were amazing! My wife wants to return to San Diego just to come here again.

I'm 75 I love fitness. On ocassion I enjoy a meal out and the Blue Wave Grill has provided me with exciting meals. Recently I enjoyed a salad for dinner. It was exciting. I must suggest it for all to enjoy. Please enjoy there Harbor Salad. It's full of exciting flavors and a wonderful dressing. If you need more the choices are always exciting. Love this grill! Ssion

food was amazing , service was 10/10. our waitress justine was so sweet and had perfect service and made our experience 10 times better than it already was. the view is beautiful looking at the marina , and the hotel pool had a tiki thursday night with a little fun show. 10/10 and 100% recommend!

The food at this restaurant was exceptional; from presentation to taste. Willy and Z were amazing every time we had a meal there. They were incredibly nice to my daughther. Willy even gave her a bag full of eggs, he didn't know but she didn't get to Easter hunt because we were on the beach, which is why this gesture meant so much to my daughter. Z stopped to converse with my daughter any chance he got. The hospitality from the restaurant staff and the amazing food were the most memorable things from this location. I'm glad there is still places like this with good food and amazing staff.

Smaller restaurants with a chill vibe. The food was great and affordable. They didn't offer military discounts which is a shame considering the military base is nearby, However, as guest of the hotel we got a 15% coupon. The service was very good. Beautiful views of the Marina. Indoor and outdoor seating available.

I love that their phone is answered by someone friendly. We have had Willy's friendly service multiple times, but on Father's Day we had the pleasure of being served by Patrick. Excellent service with a smile, patience and fleixiblity. We feel right at home here and the food is consistently delicious. The view is the icing on the cake. We'll be back.

Been here two time. Was hoping that the second time was just as good as the first time. And it did not disappoint. Food was executed to almost perfection.

Stayed at the Best Western plus Island Palms in San Diego (Shelter Island) and decided to have dinner at the Blue Wave restaurant, just up the stairs from the lobby. We were very impressed with the food and service! The ribeye was so good! It came with a light, juicy sauce on top that really enhanced my medium-cooked steak. The potatoes were nicely seasoned and so were the vegetables! My husband had a cold and got a bowl of tortilla soup which he raved about! We topped it off with a pineapple upside-down cake to take back to our suite. Would definitely recommend...not your usual hotel restaurant!

The service here is top notch. The staff was so friendly, attentive, and considerate with our big family party. They took the kids orders first and rushed them while the adults had drinks and apps. They took substitutions and had no issue with doing so. They went above and beyond! The food was really good too. Everyone in our party of 13 commented on how much they liked their food. Stand out dishes: guacamole, spinach artichoke pot stickers, short rib papardelle, avocado tacos The ambiance isn't anything to write home about, and it could use some updating. New place settings, tables, and chairs would be a good move.

A bit over priced for the quality of food but atmosphere was nice.

Easy meals especially if you are staying at the hotel. Great happy hour selections. Food comes out or quick and when our waitress noticed we didn't eat a dish, she comp'd it after asking for feedback. Beautiful views of the marina. Live music on Friday night. World series was on in the bar. Only con was very very limited coffee options. Adding an iced latte or variety of easy coffee choices would be nice

If theyxdisnt have a limited menu I think they would have earned the 5th start but food was great and excellent service

This restaurant is within the Island Palms Resort and is situated with lovely views of the Marina behind Shelter Island. The food is good both main and breakfast menus and there is a small bar with a decent beer selection. The only reason I docked a star was a rude server.

Lovely place in the hotel. Nice wine, the live music was good. Service was very good. Food presentation was lovely but food was a bit on the bland side.

This is the second time my wife and I have eaten at Blue Wave. We had a late lunch and sat outside on the balcony overlooking the pool and marina. My wife had the Mushroom Flatbread w/Pina Colada Margarita and I had the California Club w/ice tea. Both of these items were amazing. Everything was very fresh and very well put together. All you have are reviews to go off of. You can the flatbread and it not be good. Nothing is ever perfect, but I would recommend Blue Wave Bar & Grill. This was our experience so I hope it helps to decide. The hostess was very nice and also recommended some places for coffee and pastries when asked. We also had a burger one evening which was good, but I do have to say the bread was a little over seasond. They are located inside the Best Western Plus Island Palms. Enjoy

Had two breakfasts here. I would skip the pancakes. They were a bit rubbery. The breakfast burrito was great and the French toast also was very good.

The food was good and the service was excellent. My husband loved his salmon and the Asian inspired cauliflower bites were delicious. The calamari was nothing special but good. They also have a kid's menu which satisfied. This is a gem to have in a hotel! Recommend!

No reservation required while both Humphrey's Bay and another place were packed and loud. This place has beautiful views and it's quite. Much nicer to hold a conversation. And just because it's a "Best Western" don't be concerned. It's great. I just live over the hill in Ocean Beach and I am pleased that we ended up here. Wind Down Wednesdays are happy hour all day!

The menu is very deceiving. We didn’t end up getting part of the meal we ordered. We had to specifically asked for something that said the meal came with. They didn’t have any of the drink specials that were shown on the menu so we paid double for the recommended alternative. Very expensive for the amount and quality of food and then was charged a 5% surcharge.

My Belgian waffle was the best I have ever had. It had a delicious flavor and it had the right proportion of crispy outside to soft inside. The berries were very fresh and flavorful as we're the butter and cream. My coffee didn't need any flavored creamer or bunch of sugar because it had a good flavor of its own. Our server was very polite and attentive. We sat outside for our breakfast with a nice view of the marina.

Great food and great friendly staff. The view of the marina is wonderful. The menu is limited and why I gave them a 4 and not a 5. We are stull in a pandemic so understandable. The fish tacos were great as well as the fish and chips. Nice place for a casual meal with friends. The margarita is delicious!

Staying at BW Island Palms, ordered risotto with chicken. OMG--so delicious!! Had never had it before and it's one of the tastiest entrees I've ever eaten. Also, received it for take-out in only 10 minutes! Thank you very much!! My beet salad was yummy, too. Beautiful room with view of the marina AND terrific food:). Nice vacation.

Good food. Most of the staff is friendly and attentive, especially at the bar. LOVE the patio. Its my favorite place to have dinner and watch an amazing sunset at the same time. If its cold, they have heaters they wont hesitate to move for you. If its too hot, they have a nice dining area inside or maybe try brunch by the pool. Decent prices for the quality and a great location! Step right outside to take a nice after dinner walk along the harbor. Oh! And dont miss happy hour.

I find this place comforting and relaxing every time I come to San Diego. Sit at the bar and have a conversation with the super friendly bar staff or the local "yachties" who probably live at the marina. Food is generally very good, especially breakfasts. Just having a margarita outside on the patio is a lovely experience.

Very romantic restaurant. My husband and i went here for our anniversary and we loved it. the food was good, not fabulous or anything, but it was pretty good. Its right on the water. Our table was by the window, we practically had the place to ourselves. our waiter was great. afterwards we walked along the pier. this is a great place to go if you want a romantic evening out without your kids. its fairly expensive, but you get what you pay for. its decently priced for a super nice restaurant!

We had b-fast here before going out on the saling adventure, America, to whale watch. We both had the Classic American b-fast with two eggs any way, choice of meat, and "breakfast potatoes." These were waffle shaped little clumps of something that resembled very crispy potatoes, but didn't really have any flavor. My sausage was a hockey puck - burned and very hard, also little flavor. The eggs came as ordered, over medium and the toast was hearty bread with a lot of butter. My guest also got her egss the way she wanted them. This was an underwhelming start to our day, and would not entice me to come back. Service was fine, although they had to go searching to change a $100 bill. I'd give 2 1/2 stars if I could.

We ate here two times, once for breakfast. We had bagels and my wife had a pancake, which she said was ok. The bagels. were toasted and still chewy. They were gross. We didn't finish them. We then went to happy hour and ordered a cheese quesidilla, which was good. We also had two of their happy hour cocktails, which were very pricey ($14.50 each). My wife ordered a Pina Colada. I ordered a margarita. The drinks were pretty big. However, whoever prepared them put so much alcohol in them it felt like we were doing shots. My wife couldn't finish hers. In closing, the place in our opinion served mediocre food at expensive prices. If you want a stiff drink, go for it.

We are San Diego locals. Good food and service but the live music is very ANNOYING! There's NO NEED for live music while trying to have a quiet dinner. Unfortunately we won't be back unless they get rid of the live music.

I ordered to go. The food was alright. The clam chowder was tasty but the crab cakes I could pass on. The booster Mac and cheese was also just ok. The coconut shrimp were soggy, but the sauce is good.

Service and staff were fantastic, but food was gross. Only ate here twice in a five day stay because the food was disappointing. Had the Monte Cristo sandwich for breakfast and cook taste the old oil that was used in the fryer and it just wasn't good. Tried the burger for dinner. I ordered medium rare and it came well done, which i could deal with, but the meat used was very lean and dry, and the bun was stale and dry as well. Best part of the food was the ranch dressing🤷‍♂️

The food is delicious as well as the drinks. Staff is super friendly and helpful. Lovely scenery and comfortable atmosphere. My only gripe is the hours for the restaurant. Random and shifting periods of the kitchen being closed. Was told the kitchen closed for 1 hour when we walked in, but there was no post regarding transition of kitchen hours. Please plan accordingly to the public when you have periods of the kitchen shutting down. Other than that, it's a lovely spot.

Limited menu. Service good for a medium priced hotel but not up to a good restaurant standard. Sadly one of our meals had to go straight back to be re-cooked as a medium well done steak came out rare. Desserts were fine. Wine & beer both good. Joe, our server was excellent. Chatty, fun and apologetic for the wrongly cooked meat. As we are staying at the hotel it makes sense to eat there. It would be nice if they improved the atmosphere, decor and general standard to match the (not cheap) prices.

It was ok. I went for happy hour. One ginger beer was $6- would have been cheaper to get it w booze. The clam strips looked frozen and they were over cooked and dry. I asked for ranch which i never got. The clam chowder fries were interesting. A bowl of fries with clam chowder poured on top then some bacon crumbles and green onions. It was just ok. The chowder tasted like they took a can of Campbell's and added some bacon and cheese. I ordered the crab guacamole. The chips were good but the description said paprika dusted. Mine had zero. Also no lime. The dip was disappointing. It felt and looked lazy. It was a tiny scoop of a bland guacamole covered by a ton of crab chunks and cilantro, a few onion chunks thrown in there too. I was expecting something more incorporated. Won't be returning.

Don't do it the food was horrible I've never seen such soggy french fries for $10 and as I looked around it all was just not worth it. My egg rolls for $16 were not even an inch long and they were burned. Hotel is wonderful. Just skip the food.

Service was SOOOOO slow! Food was ok. Our group was pretty disappointed and won’t go back when we come to town. We were so excited to eat here. We ended up finding an incredible restaurant in town that scored 5 stars on everything. Hope things improve. 😞

Falsely labeling menu items gluten free is extremely dangerous to those with celiac. You clearly have menu items listed gluten free that are not. DO BETTER

Extremely disappointing and over priced. I regret eating here when there are so many better options in the area. I am staying at the hotel and preferred to stay onsite, big mistake. I ordered fish and chips $25. I received two small pieces of what appears to be cod and cold, dry, hard waffles fries. I hate to complain so I will just consider this a loss. I strongly advise reconsidering spending money at this restaurant or avoiding the fish and chips like the plague. Not only did I waste money but now I have to spend even more money finding something else for dinner.

Wife and I had dinner here on a Saturday. We loved the location and how quiet it was. I ordered the Blue Wave Burger and my wife the salad with salmon. I asked for my burger well done and it was well burnt. The bigger issue with our meals is that it was VERY VERU salty. We were so hungry as we sat down but could only finish half our meal. When I walked out my lips felt like I ate a full bucket of popcorn. I wasn't the only person with a complaint. I heard the lady behind us letting staff know of her displeasure with her food. Very disappointed. Will not return.

I walked in to order breakfast for my family to-go as we were staying in the palm island hotel. I was told to sit at the bar. They asked me what I wanted to eat but I hadn't received a menu yet.. I got up and grabbed the menu myself, and as I was doing so the waitress said she'd be back to take my order. I then sat there for 30 minutes (I started a timer on my phone that got to 15 minutes after i was already sitting there for what i deemed to be an exssesive amount of time) as they served atleaset 3 different parties who came in after me. I would say I was just forgotten about, but Multiple waiters walked past me and seemed to glance at me. I don't know how to take the experience but I know it wasn't good... maybe because i said I'd be doing a to go order.

Before reviewing the terrible food, I'll start with a warning - on top of their high prices, THEY ATTACH A 5% SURCHARGE. When asked the purpose of the 5% the server curtly said "the company charges that for general expenses, but servers are instructed to remove the charge if asked by the customer. " THIS IS AN ILLEGAL AND NEARLY-HIDDEN EXTRA CHARGE FOR NOTHING BUT SNEAKINESS, meaning, the price on the menu IS not the price you pay, if you don't notice. The food was terrible, Christmas dinner was prime rib, but a poor cut and 50% fat and gristle,. Instead of a green vegetable, two potatoes are served, both dried out and inedible. I'm so disappointed with this place, especially for the bait and switch on the pricing. They should be reported to the State, which I will do on 2 January 2026 when their offices re-open.
