Opinions de Fathom Bistro San Diego
Great, super casual craft beer bar on a fishing pier with yummy house-made unique sausages, hot dogs and sandwiches! An interesting crowd of fishermen, Shelter Island resort tourists and locals. The Beer menu is always on point with some hard to find stuff and hyper-local options. My favorite is the kimchi pulled pork sandwich with a Pliny the Elder. Pro-Tip: Check their Facebook page for any closures due to staffing or weather. This is a very small local owned joint with a small crew, don't be a d*ck, be patient and enjoy!
Decent place for a bite, beer, and people watch on Shelter Island Pier. They offered a Sunday Brunch menu but we waited until 12:45pm for Lunch. Had the Baja hot dog, burger, Societe the Pupil IPA and Newtown Apple Cider. Order at the counter and delivered to our table. Sure, you pay for the location so don't expect cheep. $6 dog, $11 burger, can't remember the beer prices. Convenient and satisfied.
If you like beer and sausage, this is a must stop. First off, the location is awesome. It's a tiny place on a fishing pier with a killer beer list and house made sausage. It's not very big with a few tables inside and a couple more outside, but what an atmosphere. I had a spicy Italian sausage when I was there and it was pretty good. If you're a beer nerd, you won't find a cooler place to have a good beer.
My first thought when my husband said we were going to try a new place and we pulled up to Fathom, I had second thoughts and really did not want to look at the menu. I learned very quickly not to judge a book by its cover! It's amazing!! My husband orders the Fuego Dog (Bacon wrapped Vienna Beef Dog, with Pepper Jack Cheese, Jalapenos, Serranos, Fathom’s Chile Death Sauce & Mustard). I ordered a Wedge Salad and a Fathom Burger. We shared the Chicken Lumpia and ended up getting a second order, as they were so good! The place is small, the food and drink selection is fantastic. The view is awesome and it's fun to watch other fish off the pier. On Sunday's you can meet their friendly Pirate Kevin! He is a blast to talk to and a welcoming host.
On a small pier on San Diego Bay. Popular fishing spot. Great views. Great craft beer taps including Pliny the Elder. Good burgers & sausage. Extremely casual.
Excellent customer service. The Chicken Lumpia is delicious; I've never tried it before. For my taste, the burgers need more flavor, but everything else is excellent. ( Many great beer options).
Great place to hang out and enjoy good beer and food. Pet friendly place the people that work there are always friendly the one guy who sits outside is really nice and he gives our dogs a treats each time we visit. The views are great make sure you wear some sunscreen if you burn easily seating in the shade is limited. It’s really cool to see the military planes and helicopters flying around just on the other side of the bay.
Small beer and brat joint on a fishing pier. Mostly outdoor seating. Outstanding beer selection. Constantly updated with local breweries. They also have wine. The brats and sausages are what they are famous for, and rightly so. Perfect location for people watching in the sun. The kids have the run of the pier to keep them occupied.
They say "location. location. location" and there is a good reason. The location is the second best thing about Fathom, the atmosphere is the best thing. Food comes in a distant third. I love kitschy places and although Fathom is small, it is mighty on atmosphere. The decore captures the essence of Hollywood water fairing nostalgia and it's a lot of fun even if you aren't familiar with the 1950's and '60's movies. Even if you aren't into the vintage movies, you will love the location along the water and public park and water view.
I went with a friend who was in town from the Midwest who wanted to hang out near the water. We enjoyed the view of the bay and the well curated beer list. A very boisterous group arrived shortly after my friend and I moved inside. I think they were from an organized pub crawl/beer tour that we later saw the vehicle of in the parking lot. We had no trouble finding close parking. I didn't rate the food as we only had drinks. The atmosphere was unpretentious. There was a whole host of folks on the dock fishing and we sat outside at first adjacent to a family with well behaved kids.
Really great hot dogs. Went with a friend and we both are of the opinion that the greek dog may be the best hog dog we’ve eaten in our lives. With that said, you can’t go wrong with any of them.
Absolutely fantastic. Was recommended to us by someone on the pier and it was worth it for sure. We were staying on Shelter Island and this place was perfect for when we had some downtime and were just walking around Shelter Island. Hot dogs and beers were the best.
This is our go place for a walk with our dog, then stop for edamames and craft beers. This place does get busy on the weekends. So visit during the week if you can.
Always have to come here whenever I'm in the area... such a unique and fun experience. The food is always great and coupled with a huge choice of good, craft beer and a spectacular location right on the water can't be beat. The view of San Diego across the bay at dusk... wow!
Glorious dive bar $ sausage hut on a pier jutting into the bay with sweeping views of the skyline and coast
Been wanting to try this place. It was great. I didn't love the gravy on the chicken pot pie sausage but the sausage itself was great. I would like to try the other ones they offer! Hubs got a burger and we tried the lumpia. They serve just craft beers but have a good variety.
We were on Shelter Island for my daughter's wedding. My dad had mentioned what he called a hot dog place, but we had been unable to make it there all week. Our last night there we decided we'd check out Fathom. It was right across the road and it was a lovely evening. It's right on the pier and there is dedicated seating available. I don't remember what everyone had but we all enjoyed it very much. I had the Greek burger and it was so amazing, I didn't even stop eating to take a photo. I also don't remember which drink I had but it also really hit the spot and I loved the glass. We had a lot of really great food during our time in San Diego and on Shelter Island, but this one ranks right up there. Definitely give it a try for a laid-back yet delicious meal. Or even just a couple drinks some afternoon. You will not regret it.
Great view, amazing dogs! The beers and pretzels are pretty good too. Social distancing is far beyond the recommended 6 feet which is great. The staff are very helpful and friendly.
Great beer selection and lots of unique and tasty food options. The tables fill up, but if you can snag one it's a great vibe to just relax and watch the boats. Also thanks to Migs, who was great when we went for dinner!
Had a Pliny the Elder on draft...do I need to say more? 😋 Will try the food next time!~ Great Dive Bar!!! Update: 8/11/2024: Another Pliny day!!! Looks like the Loco Moco is the award winning meal. Will try next time!!! 😎
If you doing know about this place you beef to go. They have a craft brewery list that changes constantly, but with a few strongholds. Their food is delicious and prefect for a bar/pier. The view is awesome and there's a constant amount of people always fishing, which gives you a source of entertainment. Check it out!
Really good sausages (hot dogs?) that are made by Fathom Bistro. Slide it onto a bread that is amazingly perfect (apparently the bread is flown in from Philly - think cheese steak sandwiches - to get that perfect chew/texture). Great quality eating experience. Lots of beer selections. Lumpia was one of the better I’ve ever eaten in California. This is a hidden gem with great views!

Their burgers were delicious, but they're a little pricey considering all you get is a burger. No fries, no side, no drink.
The place has a good vibe. It is in a good location. Food is good.
Great location on the pier. While we were there we witnessed a boy catch his first ever fish and a lady catch a ray. Lots of folks there catching their dinner. And after a morning of fishing step over to Fathom. There were a dozen craft beers on tap. They make their own sausages and we had delicious bierwurst and spicy Italian versions. The Buddhist came with a stewed red cabbage with clove accents and the Italian had a thick homemade marinara. We also had a bacon wrapped Baja Dog with a jalapeno Pico De Gallo. The owner and staff were very open and friendly. The view and the food were well worth the drive.
Very friendly staff, very exclusive location with exclusive menu. Nice hardcore view, great place to visit in the afternoon. Tiny table area but full of Maritime decor, again, very exclusive. Outdoor seating is fun, get to see people walk by, lot people with fishing pole, hey to join their happiness when fish is caught. You won't feel this excitement really anywhere else. Need to deal with bees though, they wants to be part of the fun!
Not too bad. Brat was dry and the wait was very long. The one pictured is $15 and came with a skimpy amount of onions. The hot dogs are good though.

Wanted to try this place for a while. Very cool interior and location. However, the food was not good. We had a hamburger, which was a ball of overcooked ground beef on a hot dog bun. It was strange, came with no sides, and cost over $15. We also had the gyro hot dog. Also underwhelming, with a single strip of gyro meat on a tiny hot dog. I was disappointed, especially because this place has a super cool vibe and so much potential. Great beer list, decor and location. But the food offerings were a real downer.
Awesome place to relax and have a fishing day with your family or pets. Fathom Bistro is perfect if you wanna get a quick bite to eat while waiting patiently for a fish to bite your line. You can get good eats and some brewsky if you choose...it's all good...bring a light jacket in case you get some cool breezes from the ocean.
I Actually Came Here To See If This Place Was Any Good. I Tried The Chicken Lumpias And They Were Better Than They Looked. I Definitely Haven't Tried The Adult Beverages Here Yet. Oh Yeah Not To Many Choices Of Soda's Here. I Did Try To Get The Bageits. Oh Yeah Dude Said. We Only Make Those In The Morning! Yup Definitely Didn't Like The Poor Service. I'm Actually Not Sure About Coming Back .
Not bad had the kimchi burger not as good as I remember it. It was difficult to eat on Italian bread, just disorganized and the Kimchi had no taste. For the price they need to try harder, put some effort into it.

Signature burger was just ok. Top bun fell apart and meat was under cooked. Condiments came in packets. Burger was smallish and nothing special. They also serve no sides or fries. Burger and a coke was 20.00.

Thanks for nothing. Waiting in que for 25 min(and thinking hell, it must be great) waiting for my food other 10 min. All okay - for good food. But what I received was a one-side burned and other-side cold small "thing" for 10 dollars. (Picture) This was the worst food I had in the USA so far.
