Delicious food in a large and fun space! They have both indoor and outdoor seating areas. They offer flavorful dishes at a reasonable price. The drink menu also looked really good. the staff were nice and friendly and helped us navigate the menu. The only improvement would be to increase the amount of fish, it was a very small piece of protein for that dish.
Had a great time here with some friends. There was a amazing DJ and they had some cool vendors. I bout some records form one of them
Delicious food in a great atmosphere! Remember to make reservations on the weekends. The food was very delicious, had shrimp appetizer, fish curry and lamp. Their rice was also every good! This place turns into a dance bar at night, we didn't stay for it but looked fun!
~November 2024 review: Food/Drink: 10/10 Bissap serves West African food (e.g. Senegalese). We tried Fish+Jollof Rice and a specialty Chicken dish that contained fried bananas, rice, and carrots. The portions were generous and the both dishes were absolutely delicious - the flavors popped, it was not too greasy nor too salty. On top of that, the prices are very reasonable - $17-$19 per dish. The cocktails are strong and tasty. They are tropical and most cost $10 each. Ambience: 10/10 The restaurant is spacious and allows for events such as live music, comedy shows, and a dance club. The decor is colorful and shows attention to detail. Service: 10/10 Service was great. Food came out quickly. No complaints. Overall: 10/10 It was our first time going to Bissap. We attended the comedy show and had dinner. The comedians were hilarious, the food and drinks were great values, and the overall experience was flawless! Highly recommended.
Flavors are amazing and I absolutely love this place. Plentiful vegetarian options because you can include akara as your protein with several dishes. Very veggie friendly, amazing flavors, and I wish I could eat here daily.
Little Baobab is a fun West African Restaurant with live music in the Mission District! They feature local musicians they play songs from around the world. Last night (Wednesday at 8:30pm) they had a live band playing Afro beats and salsa! Lots of people went up to dance. The food was also amazing. We ordered the Chicken Yassa (chicken with caramalized onion), Lamb Dibi Combo (grilled lamb) and Beef Pastelles (fried plantains). The owner, Marco, was super friendly and recommended the best dishes! Our server, Koudous was awesome too. We had a great experience!
Delicious African fare in a chill environment. Tasty flavors and friendly service; they definitely go easier on the spice level, though.
Ordered dibi lamb, jollof rice, onion sauce, plantains and vegetable salad. I also got ginger juice which was alright. There was also some Brazilian performers for the reopening of the restaurant so the atmosphere was lively!
Delicious food. Senegal curries. Affordable and a fun dive bar environment. Truly a perfect place
Amazing place! Had never tried senegalese food before, so I can't judge authenticity, but the food was really tasty! I got the Mafe (a peanut based stew) with akara (a vegetarian bean fritter) and fufu, it was rich and flavorful. Also tried a bit of my friend's Yassa (a caramelized onion stew) that was absolutely delicious as well. Would highly recommend!
I come here often during Friday and Saturday night that is when they open as a club. This is my favorite club in the city by far. The place is PACKED and it can get very hot but music is great (mostly aftobeats, some reggae, some reggaeton) and everyone wants to have fun! As an African person my self, I love the diversity in this place! Drinks are also delicious. I haven't tried their food. Wednesday is salsa night. I am attaching also the other activities they have during the week as a picture.
beautiful interior. came for ecstatic dance and was such an incredible space to dance in!
This place is insanely good. The Dibi chicken is FANTASTIC and the little baobab cocktail is the best summer (or anytime) drink. I stumbled on this place by accident and have come back so many times. The staff are so friendly and lovely and it’s just the best place for a yummy drink, delicious food and a good time.
First time to eat Senegalese food and this place did not disappoint me at all. My friend and I went and both got chicken yassa with gollof rice and hibiscus tea - wow! I know I’m going to go back to try everything on their menu!
At 6 on a weekday it wasnt crowded. There was some small live music performance in the other room. Our food didn't take too long. I will say the portions were smaller than I expected but they tasted good. I'd be down to come back and try other dishes. My first time eating the pastelles and they were really good. The ginger drink was fire!
Great food, awesome music, and wonderful atmosphere!!! Will come back and recommend!!
Great African vibe in the mission. We had a great evening with reasonably priced drinks, excellent food, live music followed by a DJ. I highly recommend.
Great atmosphere Went with a friend and they had live salsa Amazing!
A West African resto! It is worth stopping for refreshing Bissap, a maffe or thieb dish, and thiakery for dessert. The Senegalese food is tasty and the staff is warm and friendly. Music on some nights.
Hard to pronounce (BISS-app BAY-oh-bab) but the food and people are absolutely amazing.
Good ambiance and great food. Has lots of vegan options as well
Had simple offerings but unique experience food was delicious service was great
Great food, great music and great atmosphere. A must dining experience while in San Francisco!
Delicious food, great live music, super wonderful staff
Bissap Baobab never fails to deliver delicious food and drinks, and amazing performances that are as varied as the Bay Area. The atmosphere is so welcoming and embracing, there is no better place under the sun!!
Always good. We have eaten here a few times and stayed for the dancing after. The food is excellent and the wait staff are friendly, but during peak times they may be slow to check in with you at your table. We like this place because it is authentic and not pretentious at all. We got dessert the other night and it was amazing. When we stayed for the dancing the music and DJ were just Ok, but the vibe was awesome with everyone dancing and having fun. Not a "poser" club feel at all. In fact, if you are someone who likes to go to dance clubs and look at your phone on the dance floor or hangout on the dance floor with a drink in your hand that you spill all over people as you pretend to be into the music and scream at every song (like it is your favorite) without really dancing, please don't come here. Hate to see it get ruined by that.
This is one of our favorite places in the city. It's a bar & restaurant until around 10 pm and then magically turns into a dancing venue. Music is consistently good with African themes sometimes. It gets crowded & you see everyone having a good time, at least we do Everytime! The venue is relatively small & cozy. Service is good.
I can’t speak for the food, but they do serve amazing drinks. Located in the Castro district, it’s also a great place to to hear authentic African and African-influenced music from Africa and other parts of the world all in one spot. Definitely has a certain vibe to it and a great crowd. Whether you are local or passing through and want to experience something different, you will enjoy yourself.
The is my favorite place to go party in San Francisco whenever I'm there. They play great reggae and African songs and its always a party inside and its always a party inside. It gets crowded in a good way. The drinks are good. Just an awesome and good vibes SF scene kinda place. I love it.
I love this place! The food is flavorful and awesome, filled with African flavors and good size portion. At lunch there is an all you can eat buffet with chicken and three different sauces, try them all! You won't be disappointed. If I'm ordering off the menu, I like the seafood coco. The juices are also on point. If you like ginger, you will love the juice with ginger in it. If you're into cocktails the sedem is my favorite.
Super tasty food. Service very accommodating for our large group and the purple sangria tasting drink was refreshing. Favorite dish was the coconut fish (don't recall the name, we ordered family style). The plantains were awesome too! Unfortunately, during our visit one of our friends had an allergic reaction (likely accidental cross contamination of seafood within our table), but the waiters and restaurant owner himself were very helpful and understanding and made sure everything was OK for us until he saw them off to get our friend treated.
This is the only West African restaurant I know of in San Francisco and shines above almost any restaurant I've eaten at in San Francisco. I lived a year in Ghana and while this is not identical to Ghanaian food, as a Senegalese restaurant, it brought me back. Every taste blended perfectly. There is no rush to leave after eating. It may be the best dining experience I've had in San Francisco and it is a must try experience.
Have now been to Bissap Baobab twice recently both times on Sunday's. Myself and partner completely enjoyed ourselves; the community, music and great Rum drink all will keep us coming back. We met the owner whom is very hands on creating an environment of diversity and people enjoying themselves. We need more places like this. We come from Marin and it is well worth the drive.
Super tasty food and drinks, and really nice people. The fried plantains were perfect! We had a lot of fun with karaoke on a Thursday night, with a DJ who rocks at the saxophone. Thanks for the fun time!
Excellent African cuisine; red curry with tofu and jolloff rice is a mainstay on their menu and worth a try. Their drinks menu is straight from heaven. Try their pitchers and their coconut rum; simply amazing and addictive. Very good music and fun vibe in their dance floor. Slow service but no biggie.
Fantastic food. Service was admittedly a bit slow, but we really didn’t mind. I think they just happened to be understaffed. Would absolutely come back. Got the seafood coco with fufu and plantains which was all fantastic
I knew Bissap for having eaten there before. It’s always a great vibe with good food, and one of the most fun place in SF in my opinion. I recently asked them to cater the drink for my traditional and white weddings. I bought a dozen gallons of Bissap and ginger juice from them. The communication with Marco Senghor was outstanding, the juices were delicious, and they were extremely flexible and thoughtful. Overall if you want some hospitality and sense of community teranga style THIS IS THE PLACE! I highly recommend!
I was super pleasantly surprised here! I came without expecting much and the food was so good. Good: - The seafood with tilapia was amazing - I didn't think I'd like it as much as I did considering I'm not usually a fan of seafood, but the curry sauce + the jolof rice made a combo that I couldn't stop munching on! - Portion sizes were perfect for what I could finish in one sitting - The staff were nice! Bad: - Pretty noisy place, still good for catchups with people - Took some time for the food to arrive Overall I enjoyed the food here a lot, the ambiance not so much but I'd come back just to try out something else!
rare west african restaurant in the heart of the mission district serving authentic dishes at a good price! would love to come back for one of their DJ or dance nights. really felt like a community in there. mafe with chicken and fufu: first time trying fufu and really enjoyed. chicken was nicely grilled and loved the mafe sauce. plaintains: perfectly made, just the right sweetness level
I really enjoyed the food here and the wait staff is great. I think that the atmosphere is hit and miss. Sometimes it's a great night out with music, but tonight, we had someone blowing on a loud whistle inside of a closed space rehearsing for an event. Despite liking a lot of things about this place, I do remember what the food preparation used to be like. The stew dishes actually had stewed meat inside of them, which made the meat very flavorful and tender. Now, the meat is cooked separately and it is not as tender or flavorful as it used to be. I assume this is because they have veered away from the more traditional preparations in an attempt to accommodate different diet choices (e.g. non-traditional proteins), but ultimately the quality of the traditional combinations suffers.
Very underwhelmed by the overall experience. Shrimp wee decent with the curry sauce but it came with white pita which wasn’t even toasted. The main dish I had the Dibi combo with chicken. The chicken was dry but the sauce it came with on the side was good. Also got the side of yassa which was tasteless. Also it had yucca in it which I hate :) overall if you want to go for dinner make sure you’re ready for it to be REALLY LOUD. Some people planted themselves next to me at the bar and started talking at the top of their lungs. I guess it’s more of a club than a restaurant.
The food is not very flavorful so I am not sure I will recommend this restaurant for lunch or dinner. The servers are courteous and professional. The best part of this spot is the club. At around 9:30pm, the other side of the restaurant, which is a club, opens. If you have eaten at the restaurant, you do not pay the $10 cover.
This place has a lot going for it and I'm really glad to see it return and thrive. We brought some out of town guests here to eat. And we both ordered the fish plate. Mine was just the head and theirs was more of the body. I would like to have seen more meat than just the head. I have no problem of eating fish heads. That is part of my culture too, but I would think that they would serve something with a little more meat on it considering the people at the same table got a lot more. The coconut rum is really amazing but watch out cuz it's easy to put it down. We were finishing dinner when the club section was starting to open so that was good timing. Very different vibe from the dinner time to the club time.
Delicious ginger tea and fried plantains, but the entrees were just okay and very small portions. The staff was great and very nice. Interesting food and crowd. In the beginning of dinner, this place was teaching dance class in the back and then a cover-charged bar.
A cold place (in the fall) so bundle up. Food just ok. Good service. Only 2 blocks from a subway station.
I went yesterday to a Brazilian party that was happening in this place. It was me and my husband. We wanted to eat before the party because we had never been to this restaurant before and the menu had many options for those who follow a plant-based diet. We were very hungry, I planned to have dinner there. I had lunch super early that day. After starting to drink, when I went to order food, the kitchen informed the bartender that there was no longer any vegan option, nothing, not even the salad!!! As I had been drinking and my stomach was empty and there was nothing to eat, I felt sick and returned home super early. It ruined my night. The party was really fun but I don't think I would come back here again or recommend it to any friends. What's the point of organizing parties in a restaurant and not having food for customers?! The drinks were good, the bartender was friendly
Underwhelming, at least for the vegan option. I ordered the Riz Au Cari dish with the Akara and fufu. Unfortunately, the red curry was too salty, fufu was bland and the Akara had an odd aftertaste. It was also quite disappointing to see the small portion size. In addition, the waitress was kind but unfortunately they charged us for an extra drink. We didn’t catch it until we got home. I found this place to be overrated and will not come here again.
My friend and I had the ceebu jen and fruit drinks. Both of ours were disappointing. Not much meat and the rice was dry. The veggies on our plates were also cold. Lackluster
Great food and a lively atmosphere, especially after dinner when the dancing starts. However the wait staff, and specifically our waitress was terrible. Our group of 8 was seated quickly after arriving for our reservation, however 20 minutes passed before the waitress even introduced herself. Then another 20 minutes before our first drink order and appetizers were taken. When I attempted to get our waitress' attention, she nodded and proceeded to walk past our table empty handed , then checked her phone at the register for 10 minutes before finally taking our drink and appetizer order. No check ins while eating, and no attempt to take our plates after we were done until they needed to move the table for dancing. I do not recommend coming. Drinks are pretty expensive. Might be good just to come for the dancing and a drink after your night out.
I’m sad and shocked. My dish looked delicious. I was expecting authentic Senegalese or even something resembling West African cuisine. The jolof rice was tasteless! How can you advertise jollof and it has no flavor. How is there fish with no seasoning and no spice? Everything we ordered was bland and not close to what Senegalese are proud of. I’m hoping the owner will consider making some minor tweaks in order to move this menu a bit closer to authentically West African flavors.
