Opinions de Paparikas San Francisco
Having recently returned from Budapest, I thought I would revisit Paprika for some Central European Cuisine. It's a short ride on BART from Oakland and when you exit the 24th & Mission station, the Paprika restaurant is right there across the Street. Already knowing that the owner leans toward Prague rather than Budapest, the beer, Budvar and Pilsner tends to be Czech while the white and red wine leans Hungary. The Paprika Goulash was excellent. But unfortunately the Strudel, a classic favorite was apparently sold out. The place has a great casual feel to it and ended up being a great place to converse and reconnect with friends on the New Year!
If comfort food were a brick and mortar restaurant it would be Paprika. Welcoming, cozy and warm, spilling over with actual comfort food! The chicken paprikash was all you’d expect in a paprikash: strong paprika flavor, tender chicken and spring onion. The toasted bread it was served with and butter was delicious! Would love to come back and try their goulash!
I always passed by this place getting off bart and never thought to come in. Finally got to try this and was so pleasantly surprised by the food. My first time having Hungarian, but not my first time having goulash. I ordered the chicken goulash and subbed mash potatoes with the gnocchi. Hands down the best goulash I ever had, I can easily say I was “lost in the sauce.” The chicken was incredibly tender as well. My Asian self only wish I had some rice to soak up all that goodness (they do give break but I’m a rice gal), and now I want the sauce recipe so I can throw everything I can find in there.
Phenomenal food and kind service! Very quaint setting with delicious, well-seasoned servings. Try the goulash and apple streusel!
Superbly yummy. I had the szeged goulash and a Czech beer, and would recommend both to anyone looking for a filling delicious meal with a drink.
Absolutely amazing. My dining partner and I eat goulash and paprikash at home, but the food they have here is surreal. I had the chicken paprikash, she had the vegan goulash. Both had robust and complex flavors with a creamy side dish of potatoes. The Hungarian wine was delightful; our server was able to assist us with finding a good pairing for our meal. We will absolutely come again and bring friends and family.
I had the vegetarian goulash, and my friends had the 2 sausages (german and swedish), and chicken paprikash, and all of us cleaned 100% of our plates!!! The food was delish and the waiter was great too. Would eat here again!
Great food, good service, great restaurant! Will definitely be back again soon!
Best Gullah in town! Look no further if you want to get a taste of Central Europe without going there. As genuine as it get and delish! I wish they gave me a straw to finish the sauce 😋 P.S. Also tried take out, great packaging and food holds up well! P.S.P.S. Very friendly and good service!
As someone of Hungarian nationality, this place is definitely authentic! My boyfriend and I got the olaszrizling (Italian wine from Hungary), which was absolutely delicious. Goes down very smooth and I’d recommend getting the bottle as we had multiple glasses. We got the prosciutto cheese board as well, and loved that paprika spice was sprinkled on the cheese and meat. Gave it a very authentic and genuine Hungarian vibe which made me feel like I was right at home in Hungary! Additionally, we got the vegetarian gulyás and absolutely loved it. This place was amazing and such a wonderful gem in San Francisco.
The Szeged goulash pork is DELICIOUS. I mopped clean the plate with the complimentary bread. Nice service, too. The waiter guy is friendly. Good for solo dining or small groups.

We had an absolutely wonderful experience at Paprika in San Francisco. It’s a small, cozy restaurant with incredible authenticity, flavor, and heart. We were visiting our daughter, who studies in California, and decided to try Paprika for dinner. I am originally partly Hungarian, so I can say with confidence that the food was impressively close to traditional Hungarian home cooking. The flavors were rich, comforting, and beautifully prepared. The Hungarian goulash was outstanding — so much so that our daughter asked for a second serving! It truly brought back the feeling of a home-cooked meal, just like the ones her Hungarian grandmother makes. Highly recommend to anyone looking for authentic Hungarian cuisine in San Francisco!
Paprika is one of my favorite places in the city, and I was just there for my birthday. They do goulash and paprikash, and man do they do it well. It’s pure comfort food. Each comes with toasted bread that is perfect for sopping up the large serving of sauce. And the apple strudl is fabulous, not to be missed. If you’ve passed it when going to BART, it is absolutely worth the short detour. My recommendation is the Szeged goulash with a Czechvar, and optionally the Hungarian Sweet sausage to start (the goulash portions are plenty).
Paprika is a gem. The dishes are rich, authentic, and full of amazing flavor, and the cozy atmosphere makes it the perfect spot to relax and enjoy a great meal. The service was warm and attentive, and everything we ordered was spot-on. A must-visit if you’re in San Francisco and want something truly memorable.
We went to this warm and peaceful restaurant after a comedy show nearby. It was clean. The team was professional and kind. We were not hungry. So, we didn't order much. The food was good, the apple desert was yummy.
Great local spot for Hungarian comfort food and crisp beers. If you like 2+ beers in an outing, come here and get a true liter and get some bang for your buck. The cheese and meat boards are always great. Both “paprika dishes” are super yummy. Sausages are done better than a certain sausage purveyor nearby.

First time trying goulash, and my god was it delicious. Good place for warm dinner on a cool night. Get ready to leave here bloated.

Unique place that is easy to miss! Good: - Really yummy food - I had the chicken dish and I loved how it came with a delicious mashed potatoes and also had a ton of chicken - We got a sausage appetizer as well and the bread it came with was great - we even got refills! - Unique aesthetic - wooden tables and chairs so it was good for a date night Bad: - Simple service, nothing too special about the experience and felt a little bit slower on the service side since it took a while to flag people down even though we were one of two parties inside Overall was a unique experience, unique food and a cool change of pace for my own tastes
Dining in at Paprika was one of my first experiences trying German food, and I liked the simplicity of the menu. The drinks and food are tasty and reasonably priced. I came here for a Stammtisch meet-up, and it is likely I will become a regular here.
This place is close to 24th St Mission bart. Not too busy on a Saturday afternoon. We ordered mix of 2 sausages (polish kielbasa & Hungarian sweet) with mashed potato and gravy. We had Das boot as well(good for 2 or 3 people) Food was good but I wish they had a dinner roll for the sausage.

The chicken paprikash was lackluster. They at least used real potatoes to make the mash. The stew looked like it had a lot of herbs, but the overall profile of the stew was not that exciting. The chicken was overcooked and dry. The chicken was not well seasoned either. I wished they used chicken thighs , the chicken they used was very easily shredded. The paprika goulash was also very lackluster. The pork was decent at best, the texture was also pretty dry. The stew was a little bit sweeter compared to the stew from the chicken paprikash. The gnocchi was atrocious — the texture, and the flavor was all wrong, it was definitely overcooked and way too soft, and not seasoned either. The tomato soup as soup of the day was its saving Grace. The soup was very well balanced in terms of acidity, richness,,, and creaminess. I hunched that they made their tomato bisque in house , instead of it being store-bought. The hungarian sausage was nothing special. Tasted like sausages that I can buy at stores. The wait time for our food to come out was unreasonably long. It took around 15-25 minutes for our soup and sausage to come out. It took an additional 10 minutes (after we finished our beginning courses) for our entrées to come out.
