This was one of my favourite nights out on our California trip, in a large part thanks to my server David who made my birthday feel very special! He was so personable, attentive and thoughtful and you could tell he was a top notch waiter. We did the appetizer platter with an order of the spring rolls between two of us and found we were quite full after. Not too full to add the amazing banana split and a macaroni salad though. The cocktails were DELICIOUS and worth the money for the novelty. The band changes the types of songs throughout the night so we did dinner 7-9 but stayed on the dancefloor for one more drink after. We did make a reservation 2 weeks out since we expected it to be busy.
This place is a relic. And I don’t mean charmingly vintage. I mean cryogenically frozen in a time capsule that nobody bothered to defrost properly. Let’s start at the door: bright lights, chilly host energy, and the unmistakable feeling you’ve wandered into a conference after-party you didn’t register for. The decor screams “mid-century tiki fantasy,” the crowd screams corporate offsite affair, and the vibe lands somewhere between wedding reception and an SNL sketch where everyone dances like Elaine from Seinfeld. The music? Absolute madness. ABBA. Shania Twain. Then more bar mitzvah classics. Then something that felt like the most lame wedding DJ discovering Spotify for the first time. All without a sound engineer of any sorts so it was overly loud and chaotic. Dance floor energy is identical to that one aunt who has had exactly two vodka sodas and now needs attention. At one point, an over-the-hill woman flashed... no one? I wish I was lying but I swear on my life she lifted up her shirt and exposed her bra to the 7 people on the dance floor. She seemed to be alone but kept trying to make friends with anyone who would listen. Drinks are dive bar quality at world class cocktail bar prices. You pay premium money to feel spiritually transported to a sticky floor in 2007. Respect. Food? Never. Ever. The pork belly was overcooked into submission. Calamari was… fine. Which makes it the best thing I can say about the menu. Shoutout to our server though, genuinely kind and helpful, clearly doing the Lord’s work in a deeply unsettling environment. The crowd is a spectacle. Middle-aged women living their best lives. Endless selfies. Cameras everywhere. Conference name tags worn proudly like Olympic medals. If you’re under 40, I truly don’t know why you’d come here unless irony is your love language. 5 stars. Literally cannot be missed on your next trip to San Francisco. What a spectacle! I will never go back, but I'm glad I came...?
Five of us had a reservation and were seated promptly. We had great service throughout the meal and our food was quite good! Of course, the very best is the amazing decor (with rain!) and vibe of this historic restaurant. Three of us enjoyed the Kahlúa pork and one of us had a curry seafood dish that they enjoyed. A unique San Francisco experience that everyone should have at least once.
What an amazing atmosphere. Best indoor tiki bar ever. Service was impeccable. The drinks were super potent. Go for an off-the-menu Singapore Sling (Jimmy Buffett was right...IYKYK!) The seafood coconut curry was flavorful and spicy...add some steamed rice. The pork was juicy and full of flavor. Go take a walk back in Tiki time! Reservations highly encouraged.
Excellent and exclusive eatery located in the Fairmont hotel. Be prepared to eat, dance, sing along, and experience the entertainment that the Tonga room has to offer. A giant pool in the middle of the restaurant sets the tone of the time you're about to have as you are propelled to the Pacific islands, as the theme of the gastronomical phenomenon gives you a one-way ticket to your Tongan paradise. The food is as tasty as you would imagine, but be prepared to make your money do the talking, as exclusivity comes at a price. Nothing outrageous, but definitely not cheap.
We almost didn't get to experience the Tonga Room as I forgot to make reservations early. Luckily, we were able to get a table one night while we were in town. So, if you are thinking about going make sure and make your reservations as soon as you can. The drinks were top notch and the entertainment was so good. We stayed for all 3 sets as we celebrated our 11th anniversary. Highly recommend the Kalua Pork and the Seafood Coconut Curry. We had a wonderful time and memories that will last as a lifetime.
The Tonga Room is such a fun, unique, and classic San Francisco dining experience! Inside the Fairmont Hotel, the iconic tiki bar and restaurant has been entertaining guests since 1945. We started with the Tonga Pupu Platter, which was perfect for sharing, and then split the Seafood Coconut Curry that was rich and flavorful. The tropical décor, complete with a pool in the center, simulated rain and thunderstorm, and live music in a floating tiki bar, made the night even more memorable. Our waiter was entertaining, helpful, and our food came out so fast! It’s a must-visit when in San Francisco for both its history and atmosphere!
Went to the Tonga Room for our Anniversary. The all Staff are very friendly from start to finish and fun to be around . The live Musicians were great and do play a variety of styles ranging from Country to R&B . We got up and danced ! The drinks are a bit too sweet and syrupy so I added more water to mine . The food was way too salty and sugary for my personal pallet .Even though we didn’t enjoy the food or drinks we thoroughly had a great time just based on the friendly service, ambiance and entertainment . We loved our time so much that we got some swag!
I had an enjoyable time.\n\nI hate that Yelp requires a minimum word count.\nBla bla bla

Celebrated my husband's 44th birthday there. Hostess sat us right by the pool next to the band on the boat. Atmosphere is great, transformed us to the islands with great tiki cocktails. Food was just mediocre. We ordered the pupu platter appetizer: short ribs were super thin (maybe 1/8th of an inch) 6 pieces total. The calamari was greasy, but the aioli was good, tangy and cuts the heaviness. The plantain chips were thin and drowning in its own sauce. The most tasty were the pork bites. For entree we had the seafood curry and the kalua pork. Seafood was cooked very well, not overcooked. There were shrimps, prawns, scallops and calamari. However the curry was so light and thin, you can barely taste it. If I didn't know it was a curry, I would've thought it's just a stir fry. The kalua pork was plentiful however it tasted more like pulled pork. There was a scoop of white rice and a scoop of Mac salad. Mac salad was under seasoned. Overall disappointing meal especially for a 4 or 5 start hotel. Cocktails were strong but delicious. Our waiter was very attentive. The part that made this experience great was the band. Excellent music, great voices and just s fun group.
this review is for dinner and we didn’t order drinks. i have to say Tonga room is such a unique place in SF. you simply have to come if you are visiting. it’s also good for locals to have fun if you have friends/family visiting from out of town. reservation: they required credit card deposit when i made the reservation. $50 each person. it’s refundable if you want to cancel the reservation but need to pay attention that if you cancel too close to the date , you may not get the money back. food: it’s asian fusion. we ordered short ribs, salmon, veggie transparent noodles, and a salad. all tasted decent. not bad! we also ordered a pistachio cheesecake as dessert. yum! atmosphere: excellent! the band was doing a great job performing for 45 minutes on the hour, taking 15 minute breaks in between. we enjoyed it very much! the $15 dollar per person charge for the performance is worth it! be aware the music is loud!

VERY ridiculously overpriced for what you get. Was probably a cool experience 20 years ago, but seems like something my grandma would enjoy rather than younger people.
I visited Tonga Room mainly because I was staying at the hotel. While the concept is unique, the food quality didn't quite live up to the high prices. Even the central pool and interior weren't as …

Classic old fashioned tiki bar in a 5-star hotel. Come here for the regular rainstorms. There are little rivers of rainwater. Very good drinks, but high prices, no surprise.
I don’t have words… it’s cheezy but fun. The food was good, and rhe drinks potent. live music and dancefloor. Come with an open mind.
If you want authentic Polynesian food, this definitely isn't the place. Food was overpriced for small portions. I had the coconut shrimp and crab ($39) and that was good but portions was very small. The Kalua pork ($36) was definitely authentic like we anticipated. It was really like American pulled pork with what tasted like store bottle bbq sauce instead of Hawaiian Kalua. We took one bite and left the rest. The waiter even asked us what was wrong because he noticed we barely touched it. The entertainment is only seen from the bar/appetizer area mainly. If you sit at dinner, you will only see their side profile when they are singing. We expected Island music more so, but the band was playing songs from Backstreet Boys and Sabrina Carpenter. Would not recommend this place to islanders.
OK. Let’s be fair. We’ve been here twice before, and one of those times was a special occasion about 40 YEARS AGO! We had really fond memories, with hopes of recreating those on NYE 2026! Bad idea. The crowd management was a hot mess and the very expensive buffet was largely on par with a mediocre all-you-can-eat dive in a strip mall somewhere. Cocktails and wine were extra, as was the additional fee every time the band played, which was every 40 minutes or so, and not especially well. It was a really expensive evening. Expected that. Was hoping for better food, more attentive and friendly service, and … well… the night we remembered of yore. Oh well. One for the books.
This was on my list of iconic San Francisco places to visit and I finally got a chance to go. It is definitely a pricey endeavor for what you get, but it's San Francisco and a tourist spot. They have a band playing on a floating platform in the pool and there's is occasional man-made rain to give you the tropical vibes. The drinks were good and the food was good. This was fun, but definitely seemed outdated to me. Come check it out to see what you think of this blast from the place bar.
It was quirky, but for the price.....no way would I go back to eat. Maybe we expected too much, being an iconic venue inside a top-end hotel, but we came away feeling underwhelmed. The coconut calamari actually tasted like underfried plastic. The chilli basil chicken was nice, but not wow. The cocktails, again nice but not wow. The band was excellent, so maybe try it for tunes and dancing, rather than a meal.
Great house band playing hits. Cute little dance floor where the buffet used to be served. $15 is nuts to charge per person for sitting at a table, but you can avoid that fee by standing and dancing. Friendly bartenders. Overall pretty interior but the rules kind of make it stuffy. It still rains, which was fun. Decent drinks. Worth $22+++ per cocktail? Probably not. I'm glad I've been.

2 star because the cocktails were great, but that's it. You're billed automatic $20 just for stepping in after 7 even when they give you a terrible table with terrible view of the performance. Let's not talk about the "performance" not even happening half the time. Overpriced food. Paid $27 for "short ribs" that was all fat and bones. Doesn't come with any sides, gotta pay extra for it. Poor experience, just go to the bar and grab a drink.
For an establishment that is so well known, this was completely disappointing. $36 for less than mediocre pulled pork, small scoop of mac and cheese and a small scoop of rice is ridiculous. On to…
