This is some of the best BBQ I've had, period. Ordered the Dino ribs and the links with a diverse set of sides, and I was very impressed. The meat was flavorful and fell off of the bone, the cornbread was great, the complementary pickled cucumber and onion combo was fantastic. Even the sides were great, I usually don't like mac & cheese and potato salad from most restaurants, but here it was on point. Same with links, not a big fan but would order them here again and again. Do yourself a favor and stop by.
Best BBq joint I have found in California so far. I have tried a lot. I recommend this place to any BBq lovers. I came here to eat 2 days in a row. If you're in the area, stop by!
I couldn't even pick up my brisket, it was so tender. I don't know why they even stock knives, as you'll never need them! My partner really enjoyed the spicy beans instead of the sweet ones that most places offer. Plus friendly staff and great service. We will definitely be back!
Had them cater for us - brisket, spare ribs, pulled pork, Cole slaw, Mac and cheese, cornbread, and potato salad. Everything was delicious. The pulled pork was the best, but the brisket was perfectly cooked, and the Mac and cheese had a great sauce. Both the potato salad and Cole slaw weren't too heavily covered in mayo. Bbq sauce on the side was also good, not too sweet
This is probably my favorite BBQ joint in the south bay right now. The brisket was cut into large slabs, but was unbelievably moist. The spare ribs had the perfect consistency. Tender and came off the bone easily, but was not mushy. Pulled pork was good, but not nearly as good as the brisket. Cole slaw was crisp, fresh, and tangy with a slightly spicy dressing. It's a newer place but totally worth going to.
You could smell the meat smomingbout back as soon as you open the door. The food was fantastic, service was great. The staff was very friendly, helpful, and attentive. The chicken was moist and had a lot of flavor. They also had a great beer selection on tap. I''d highly recommend for anyone looking for BBQ.
So far I had brisket taco, beef rib, and brisket. You get a lot for a lunch, but It's good for dinner. The brisket is great. Slow cooked Texas style. Beef rib is only sold for dinner. Big piece of meat. Tender and juicy. I didn't put sauce on on it, but I would recommend it. Good potato salad and green salad with vinegar dressing. Food is a 5.
Hands down the best bbq around. The food is delicious. I ordered the brisket sandwich and I was blown away by how perfect it was. The owner is a so friendly and you can tell they put their heart into making that food. You have to go!!
I was looking for a good BBQ spot in San Jose and was recommended to another spot called Jon Jon's.. DO NOT GO TO TO JON JON'S... GO HERE INSTEAD!!! Way better food, service and atmosphere. Juicy brisket served with real potato salad not some watered down nastiness with relish from that other place I already forgot the name of. I would have added photos but it was so good I forgot to take them. My sandwich from the other place was dry, tasted old and was tough. Mesquite and Oak served me proper with fall apart melt in your mouth goodness. Thanks you guys, I'll be back for certain!
Had the 2 meat meal; brisket, pork ribs, coleslaw, mac. Really good BBQ!! Brisket was tender and well seasoned, ribs were bite tender. I didn’t check out any other bbq joints in SJ so can’t compare, but this place absolutely won’t disappoint and I would recommend it to anyone.
I love the food here so much. I had them cater my son's college graduation party. Everyone was raving about the awesome brisket and pulled pork. The corn bread didn't last long. Their beans and potatoes salad is just like my recipe. We come here now when we want awesome bbq. The other meats are all good. They do a great job on catering and you get a lot of food for a great price. We will support this awesome small business.
We ordered our food the service was incredible they were detailed with our order. The brisket is perfect and juicy all the sides are perfect the meats are incredible not dried out like Smoking Pig and also as expensive like Smoking Pig.
First time trying and very pleased. I had the Pulled Chicken Sandwich with the Mac & Cheese side. The chicken was juicy, flavored just right, and was served with onions, green bell peppers, and jack cheese. It was delicious! The BBQ sauce hit the spot and the Mac and Cheese was your standard Mac & Cheese, but very good flavor. My husband had their Brisket Sandwich and absolutely loved it. Will definitely be back and am looking forward to checking out their catering as well.
Stopped in for lunch today. Was greeted very friendly. The gal behind the counter helped me with my side order selectionn tater salad was good the spicy bean's werebok. Brisket was amazing, the rub had a nice kick and the meat was fresh and tender. Bbq sauce was good, fast service and the restaurant was spotless. 0 complains from me the customers were even very pleasant and we had a good conversation.
Pretty good BBQ. Nice portions as well. Well smoked, I'm not a fan of the BBQ sauce, but I think that's something that can be more personal. This place has the tenderness and the flavor down.
Good brisket in town. The bad part is close at 4 pm. The brisket sold out around noon. The chicken also great
Best BBQ that I've tried in San Jose. I've had the pulled chicken and pulled pork sandwiches and both were fantastic. The pork especially had lots of nice crispy, bark-y pieces while still being nice and juicy, not dry at all. You can tell this pork was actually smoked for several hours and not just cooked in an oven or crock pot. My dad generally gets stuff from the breakfast menu and he always devours his. I'm really looking forward to trying the ribs considering how much I liked the pork. Definitely recommend to anyone who likes BBQ.
What is there not to say,0 this place is awesome. But they can use some work on their barbecue sauce. It's okay. But their beef brisket and beef ribs and pulled pork is off the hook. The best in San Jose. Well you got to understand this people is from Texas so what more do I got to say... they got TVs and it's a clean atmosphere. I've had their beef ribs and I've had their brisket and I've had their Tejano sandwich which is pretty good too. I do recommend this place to anybody if you like barbecue. But their sides for me are not that good. They can be improved.
One of the most tender moist briskets I have ever eaten. Baked inside both for excellent they somehow pack amazing flavor into the mac and cheese that would be my top recommendation for a side. A great place with good food and friendly service. They also have a wide selection of beers. I would definitely recommend going here one of the best barbecue places in the area for sure
OMG! The brisket and cornbread are phenomenal my favorite. The only bad thing I would have to say is I wish you’d be open every day . Anyhow I’m going back to the brisket it’s like it melts in my mouth it’s so yummy. The brisket I’ve tasted in my life ,this is by far the best. Everything is great your menu ALL delicious your prices are decent and your staff is very friendly. I most definitely will recommend this restaurant too everyone I know. Not to mention when I get married I will be having Mesquite and Oak catering for my family and friends on my special day soon to come. Thank you
Best barbecue I've had in the bay. Excellent brisket and all of the sides I've had are really good too (corn bread, potato salad, beans). Prices are very fair. Wish they were open more hours so I could go there more but I understand.
Best BBQ outside Texas! Don't miss their dino ribs. Would love to see some cooked veg on the menu. Sides like slaw are okay, but the meat is STELLAR. Brisket is on point. Can't wait to go there again soon!
I've always done takeout and bought in bulk (i.e. 4 lb of brisket please). My favorite is their brisket, but the smoked sausages and ribs are really great too. It is my favorite bbq place in SJ. Definitely worth checking out!
This place is by far the best BBQ spot in the South Bay. This is the PIT MASTER plate. -Brisket is tender and delicious! And the two sauces give it a spicy zesty flavor🤤. -Pork Ribs are not fatty and pure meaty awesomeness! -Cornbread is soft but still holds a nice crunch😋. -Mac&Cheese is perfect!😍 -Baked Beans are rich in flavor and go well with this meal. -Pickles on the side😁. This entire meal was only $20 including tip! So cheap for how amazing it is!!!!!!!!👌🏽🔥🤯. Note: If there was room in my stomach I would have tried more!!!😅
Brilliant, succulent BBQ! I try to come here at least once every trip to San Jose. It’s the best BBQ I have found consistently. The beef brisket is so tender, and the bark is fantastic. The spicy cowboy beans are a favourite also! They have a great selection of craft beers on tap. Well worth a visit!
The food here is on point the food is so good came with my best friend me and her enjoyed it the staff is so friendly they made it come in here so nice I love the food the atmosphere everything about it it was my first time trying it and I definitely will come back you got to try this don't hesitate if you're looking for a good barbecue right here is the spot.
Some of the best BBQ I've had in the Bay! The owners are from Texas and they did a great job bringing the flavor. The beef ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender and the brisket was deliciously moist. It was also cool to see sausage on the menu, and the pickles had a nice brine. They also have a really good beer selection if you're looking for something to wash it down
A must try local BBQ joint. I ordered the beef ribs and the pork ribs entree to taste test before Thanksgiving. One of the few spots that opens for Thanksgiving pick up! The pork ribs were very juicy. The 1/3 beef ribs is a meal in itself. For my Thanksgiving order, I ordered 2 full slabs of pork ribs, 1 lb of brisket and an order of cornbread. Warming up the cornbread is on point. Since we were not going to eat the ribs for a few hours, the staff suggested that I kept it as a whole slab to reheat ( it will stay more moist this way). Definitely appreciated that suggestion because everyone at the dinner loved the ribs! Loved the cracked pepper crust ( is that what it was??). They also have smoked turkey and some sides. Check the Thanksgiving (2018) menu.
Visited for a late lunch. I got the Texas Red and Bleu Salad and my hubby got the pulled chicken sandwich with mac and cheese, spicy cowboy beans, and a hot link. The flavor on everything was amazing, especially that chicken! Plus the service was quick and super friendly. Felt like I was a regular even though it was our 1st visit. We will definitely be back.
Excellent BBQ restaurant in an industrial area changing to urban housing. Like a lot of old SJ, street parking is a challenge. Worth it though. Meat is smoked onsite and is heavenly. Side dishes (salad, mac n cheese, picked cucumbers and onions) are tasty. BBQ sauce served with meat is not overly sweet and had very good flavor. Service staff are very nice. Restaurant is clean with quite a bit of seating and big windows. I had the hot links as a platter ($13.99). Cones with two sides and the condiments. All tasty stuff. Going to try the brisket today. Saw it come off the smoker the other day after I ordered links and it looked—and smelled—fantastic.
This place is probably one of the best bbq in san jose! The beef briskets here are really flavorful and can be enjoyed with or without their homemade bbq sauses! Its smoked very well and has a very nice melty feeling in your mouth! This place will get busy in the lunch rush so it's best to come here as early as you can! Or you can order online and skip the line! Service is very friendly and easy when it comes time to pick up! Although for some reason they dont give napkins and theres no dispenser in sight when i visit...
My taste buds are so happy right now. The brisket falls apart at the touch, yum! Beans and potato salad were really good and the corn bread was perfect. We sat out front on the patio which had 3-4 tables, umbrellas and natural shade. Our little dog joined us on the patio and enjoyed herself :)
We had a pulled pork birthday party here a while back, and it was overall a great time! We called a week prior and they were very prepared for the celebration and the large group we brought. The food was absolutely delicious to the point we emptied out all their pulled pork. The cornbread is also freshly baked and fantastic as well! The staff were extremely kind and helped organize the space, provide supplies we forgotten, and were in general a fantastic part of the experience!
Right away, it’s clear someone cared: the welcome is sincere, the menu is tight and intentional, and the room’s cozy energy gently talks you into staying a little longer and savoring the moment.
We did the family prime brisket with several 16 ounce sides. The brisket is juicy, full of flavor and an excellent smokiness to it. The sides were all straightforward bbq sides and good. They offer three kinds of sauces which included a Carolina mustard sauce, a sweet tomato based sauce and a spicy tomato based sauce. It's a casual and simple set up with a few tables inside and three patio style round tables outside on the sidewalk. They offer a few good beers, sodas, water and lemonades.
I drive 30 mins just to have BBQ here. It's really good and the best bang for your buck when it comes to quality & cost. First time getting the chicken kids meal. Included smoked chicken, Mac & cheese, corn bread & bottle of juice. it's a lot of food for such a small cost about $7, for perspective about the price of a happy meal but with way better ingredients. Also surprised it was a full bottle of juice. I was expecting small carton box juice. I had the brisket bacon hash which was really tasty. From paying for my meal and getting it to my table was less than 10 minutes.
It was our first time here. We mainly came to try the beef dino rib. This place was busy for a late Sunday morning. I really wanted to try the breakfast items but had to stick to the plan lol. The person who helped me was super nice and friendly. He was recommending one of the breakfast items and told me it was guaranteed to put me in a food coma. I told him I'll try it next time. While I was waiting, the place itself was pretty big on the inside. Parking is a little tough. My husband had to look for parking while I went in to place my to go order. The dino rib was delicious and tender. Mac n cheese and potato salad were solid side items. The lady who gave me my order was eh. I kept asking to make sure I had bbq sauce. She was like yes, even the person helping me asked. I walked out one of the bbq sauce fell out. I got home, and all we had was one small container of bbq sauce. That was annoying. I had 2 dino ribs and all she gave me was 2 mini sauce containers. Luckily, the beef rib didn't need it but come on.
One day I was craving bbq and I haven’t had any good ones so I never really bothered trying to find it. However today I was close to settling for famous Dave’s but I decided to look it up to see if there was anything new. I happened to find two near work. Jon Jon’s and mesquite & oak. Since the combo for Jon Jon’s don’t let you substitute out the sides I went here instead. The place is nice and clean and everyone there was nice. They seen me looking at the togo bbq sauce and asked if I wanted to try different ones. I got the brisket, pork ribs, and Dino beef rib because that’s the first time seeing it at a bbq joint. The brisket was good and the Dino rib was huge and juicy. The pork ribs was okay to me but that’s just me because my coworker liked it. The Mac and cheese side was really good and the corn bread had real corn in it! I forgot my sauce and the cook ran out to hand it to me. Good customer service.
Writing this review after totally smashing my plate. This is the best BBQ I’ve had in a long time. I used to drive all the way to Oakland to get my BBQ. Little did I know this hidden gem was right under my nose this whole time. I’m genuinely surprised this place isn’t packed - I’m here in a Sunday afternoon. Family owned and they cook like you’re apart of that family too. Will be recommending this place to everyone asking where to eat next. Get the brisket ~ chefs kiss. 💪🏼
Their meats are the best in town! True to their name, their food does not disappoint in the flavor department at all! The secret is in their consistency in both the food and the people behind the counter. Knowing I can come in any day and get the same delicious food every day without having to worry about dry or overcooked meat is a blessing that some other spots just can’t match. The poeple that work there are what make M&O so good, great attitude and energy by the people there. I’ve brought 5-6 different people here now and everyone only had good things to say about the place ;) This is the best BBQ in San Jose, in my opinion. My only wish is that I wish they served burnt ends (even one day a week) but it’s no big deal!
When he said we'd meet up at Mesquite and Oak, I naturally thought it was an intersection, but my GPS wasn't having anything to do with it and when I googled it up pops the BBQ restaurant! I was taken aback by the wonderful aromas that permeated the entire place. I sampled many of the meats and was flabbergasted by the presentation and flavors. 5 stars ☆☆☆☆☆ and worthy of a 2 hour drive! No shit!
Except for the Cowboy beans, the food was really good, and seasoned just enough. The brisket was extra tender. We ordered on 2 occasions: the brisket plate, and we mixed up sides between- garden salad, mac, potato salad, beans and extra corn bread. Would fasho go back!
Disclaimer I’ve Been coming here for years. These pictures are older but the quality never changes. I hate that not everyone can have the experience that I have with this restaurant. The food is always delicious. The staff is always friendly. I know it can be frustrating when places run out of things that you want But for a small business, every dollar counts, if they’re sold out on anything that I’m looking for I just grab something else because you can’t go wrong. I recently went to another barbecue place that offered beef ribs and was robbed without a gun over priced underseasoned and offers you absolutely nothing You can come here anytime and any dish you get will hit the mark
amazing bbq joint. closes at 4 so be sure and get there early. excellent ribs, brisket, pulled pork and sides are off the hook. recommend the beans, potato salad, and macaroni and cheese. excellent corn bread. was not a fan of the coleslaw. really good selection of craft beers, great notion, bare bottle, and others on tap. update, went again and food is still amazing and they changed the coleslaw recipe and now it's excellent.
Limited hours, but I finally got the chance to try this place out and I’ll be coming back! Had their smoked brisket and smoked carnitas tacos and they were really good! Surprised by how much I enjoyed the smoked carnitas. Will have to get that again. Went on a Sunday afternoon (3:30pm) and they had $5 beers on tap. Not sure if that’s a regular thing, but I appreciated the brew with my food.
Coming from 33 years of living in Texas, this is real Texas BBQ. This place is THE best BBQ I have found around this city. Potato Salad is delicious also. The BBQ sauce is on POINT! The cornbread rocks and they have some very nice seating tables outside and music going. Thanks for taking me back home for a little while...

Great BBQ, nice staff! Been trying to get here for awhile and so happy we persisted. The tenderest most flavorful brisket!! The staff is so kind and professional, they remembered us when we left our to-go order. I walked in and they immediately prepared a fresh order for us. We'll be back often!!!

Cozy American BBQ place. Meats are a tad underseasoned but still fairy good. The sausage had a great snap. Sides are solid, especially the corn bread. Not the best nor the worst around, and at their prices it's a fairly decent value.
From what I remember the food was good the barbecue sandwich was awesome. Looks like a barbecue shop smells like a barbecue shop smells so good when you walk in. Wish the lady at the counter with smile and I have a sour look on her face. But the service was still on point. The cowboy beans are a must have!
I had been hearing more and more about this place so I had to check it out. The BBQ sauce is fire, especially the golden one they put on the hotlink Sammie. Cornbread is very good. The brisket was not up to par and a lil dry. The carnitas taco was great!
First time coming to this place and I have a mixed review. I got the Brisket, Ribs, Baked Beans, Potato Salad and Cornbread. Now the price was ok considering this was a BBQ place. I have to say that the Brisket was some of the best I have ever had anywhere, you could make a pillow out of that and I will sleep on it. Super juicy and tender, next time I come back I will get a double portion of the Brisket itself. The ribs were good but nothing great, the baked beans were good and the potato salad, well I didn't finish the potato salad so that tells you something, cornbread was great and the service was excellent. All in all it was a good experience, I definitely will come back again and try other things.
My girlfriend and I tried this place out for the first time. I had the brisket and wasn't all that impressed. There wasn't much of a ring and the crust wasn't very crusty. In fact the overall taste was lacking. My girlfriend had the beef rib and loved it. I tried and it was definitely better than my brisket. We also had a sample of the turkey breast and both of us were impressed. It had that smoke taste and was juicy. The sides were a mixed bag. My girlfriend loved the house pickles and the coleslaw. I was a big fan of the cowboy beans. We both liked the cornbread. We both found the mac & cheese lacking. It's not baked but tastes like noodles with cheese poured on them. Overall it's the best BBQ we've found in San Jose so far and we will back to try some more.
As a person who lived in Houston Texas for 6 years, I can admit that this place worths giving a try. The beef ribs was cooked until tender but it was a little greasy (which is not on them lol). I liked the potato salad. It was simple but reminded me of my mom's Olivier salad. The mac and cheese were also fine but I could taste butter more than other flavors. Overall it was a nice experience. I recommend this place and don't forget to go there earlier on weekends as they may run out of brisket and some other items.
I was trying to have something different for lunch and I thought this place will be a good idea for a Sunday brunch/lunch and I wasn't wrong. I ate at the place (right now there is only outdoor seating) and even it was a lot of to-go orders, the waiting time was short. The staff is friendly, the place is clean, the menu simple but everything looks delicious, the food portions are on point and there are a variety of sides you can choose to complement your plate. I order: * Califa Hash (topped with Two Eggs, Avocado, and Cherry Tomatoes) with a side of Mac N Cheese (5oz) * Pulled Pork w/ Coleslaw (with BBQ Sauce) with a side of Baked Beans (5oz) The food has flavor, consistency, and it is very enjoyable. I will definitely come back, and if you feel like enjoying BBQ, give this place a try, you will not regret it.
Discovered this place just walking by, was actually heading to the Mexican food place next-door but thought I would give it a try, pretty dang good, my only complaint is they cut the brisket with the grain rather than against, I took it home and cut the brisket properly, against the grain, and it was good!
4.1/5 for the price its hard to beat. I got the brisket sandwich and it could have been juicier and more flavorful but the coleslaw was great. Service was really nice though.
I tried the Brisket set. I was hoping for something very juicy, but my brisket was rather dry. It had good flavor, just missing the juices. I'll come back another time and try the ribs and see if that changes things for me. At the time they were also out of potato salad. It was around 1pm, so I was surprised they were out that early. You'll also leave smelling of smoke, in a BBQ way.
Overall 4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Now let’s break it down. I parked down the street and the smell of smoke wafted through the air. That is ALWAYS a good sign. Upon walking in, the ONLY reason Mesquite & Oak didn’t get 5 stars is because of the customer service. Upon walking in, I was not greeted, as the customer, I had to greet the lady at the register taking orders. Working in the service industry for over 20 years, the very basic and most important part of any business is acknowledging your customers. **Mesquite & Oak, please expect more from her, teach her how to be inviting & personable, she is doing your business a disservice. Even if she is an introvert, she can do it, I promise.** The lady behind the counter gave me a big warm smile, one of the chefs brought my to go order to where I was sitting, rather than calling my number, the youngest in the crew was also smiling and kind. The rest of the staff is friendly. I ordered the brisket meal with extra brisket, potato salad, Mac n cheese, & it also comes with corn bread. Corn bread is good & sweet Potato salad is good, no onions which is the only reason I ordered it, and it has fresh dill in it, which is a plus. Flavorful and didn’t need salt. The Mac n cheese was also very good and flavorful. Now let’s get in to the main attraction…the brisket. I got this flimsy utensil kit in my to go bag and audibly said, “they must be real confident if they’re giving these out.” And that brisket was fork tender, seasoned all the way through, you could taste the smoke, and it doesn’t NEED sauce. However, the sauce is very good. Definitely give this place a try. 👍🏽👍🏽
A nice little joints to grab a bite. The lady taking the orders was a bit stand offish, as if you just disturbed her from something important. Wasn't rude, just not welcoming. Any who, the portions of meat were in sink with cost. The ribs were a hit 5/5. The CORNBREAD was delicious 6/5. The 1st time that I ever had actual corn in my cornbread. The Brisket was just a tiny bit over cooked. Don't get me wrong, it was good just a bit over cooked 4/5. The mac&cheese was like a soup. Taste was good but I was just throwed off by the consistency 3/5. The potato salad lacked all types of flavor 2/5. That was the only real disappointment I had. On a positive not the potatoes were not undercooked. The portions on sides were a bit small. But hey I can't really complain since I don't have a large appetite. Overall the place is worth the drive. A different day may yield better results.
Discovered this place just walking by, was actually heading to the Mexican food place next-door but thought I would give it a try, pretty dang good, my only complaint is they cut the brisket with the grain rather than against, I took it home and cut the brisket properly, against the grain, and it was good!
Overall great BBQ place. I’m an avid smoked beef rib and brisket connoisseur and have tried plenty of places across the country. This was easily the best bbq in the Bay Area that I’ve tried. Both the dyno ribs and brisket were great. If you’re looking for Texas styled smoked bbq in the bay, THIS is it!

Being from Texas, I'm on the lookout for good, legitimate Texas-style bbq in the Bay. After seeing the reviews here a while back, I recently tried the place. The food, on average, is a solid 3/5. Some meats better than others... the deets: - brisket was all fat. I know the brisket has several types of cuts within it and I would have expected to receive a mix... not literally half or more all fat. - chicken thigh photo on the site is a nice piece on bone. What I received was a 1/4 inch piece of dried up, boneless meat. - Sausage was absolutely terrible. Super dry and tasted unexpectedly gamey. - the ribs are very good... both the spare ribs and the Dino ribs. - sides are alright but nothing fancy... what a side should be I guess. Overall, if you're craving the ribs, I highly recommend the place. Otherwise, I just don't get the hype with the foods I received.
Quite disappointed :( This was my second time that we went (also because we had good memories of the first time), and things were way worse than last time. Rib and corn bread were good, but all the remaining was the problem. First of all, the rice we ordered was just not cooked at all.. not sure how one can mess up the rice that bad.. Second, we ordered 3 corn breads in total but just got 2. So basically, two of our sides were missing. Not only that, we had to wait quite long until we got the order and pulled pork was average to not so good. Overall, highly dissatisfied..
2025 update: In the area again and decided to see if things were better….again, the food is delicious, but our call in order was all packed up when we got there 👍 but there was no bbq sauces or butter for the cornbread included or offered. The jalapeño poppers were packed into a plastic deli container and were soggy from the heat. We ordered the house pickles at $5 for an 8oz (1cup) portion and received a container of the sliced dill pickles that come in a gallon jar at the mega club…..clearly not house pickles like they used to have that were worth $5. 😖😢 The sandwich bread also seems different. We appreciate the reusable deli containers tho as we do reuse them many times 👍 (2022)Probably our 20th time here. Not the first so-so experience, but very disappointed this time. Bread on sandwich burnt with less meat than usual. Asked for two tacos with the tortilla on the side but got every item individually packaged, even though they asked twice and we clarified…make the taco without the tortilla under it….then put the tortilla on the side. Either way, less meat than the same order last week. Out of the jalapeño poppers, which was sad, but they are often out of at least one thing we order, so not a surprise. Terrible cafeteria dispenser napkins with BBQ? Awful. We make special long drives to come here and I believe this will be our last……even though the food is very tasty. 😢
I've been craving BBQ and came here after reading the positive reviews. We got the brisket and a beef rib. The staff was really nice and gave us an extra rib saying that the first one is smaller than their normal portions. The brisket is good although it's a bit light on the flavor side -- that I had to use the sauce. The beef rib has a ton of flavor but I agree with the other reviewers that it's too fatty. The coleslaw was great.
This is my second time here; first time was probably a couple of years ago. The one thing I remember from my first visit, is that the brisket was very fatty. Before going today, I read some yelp reviews; some people said they asked for leaner cuts while ordering. Today I got to Mesquite & Oak right after 12pm. I ordered the brisket hash (which many others have raved about), and then a double meat combo (ribs & brisket). I was told it would probably take 12-15 mins for my order to be ready, and that if I waited outside someone would bring my takeout order to me. Fifteen minutes went by. Twenty minutes went by. Twenty five minutes went by. Even thirty minutes went by. Meanwhile, people who must've placed orders over the phone, were picking up their food while I was waiting outside. Finally, when she was giving someone else their order, the cashier saw me and asked me if I was waiting. I told her the order# I was waiting on. She went inside, came back out with my food package- it apparently had been ready for at least 10-15 mins. This miscommunication was probably partially on me - I should've checked in after 20mins of waiting, to see what the status was. But I didn't want to seem impatient, especially during these tough Covid19 times. But for them to specifically guide me to wait outside and tell me someone would bring me my order, and then give me my food 15mins after it was ready, I didn't think that was cool. My over-easy eggs were definitely not over-easy, by the time I got to eat it.
We ordered take out of 1lb Brisket, cowboy beans & cornbread. No where did I find any description of their rub. All we could taste was LIME! Meat was ordered combo, but it was all sooo dry & just Lime. What fat there was gooey, didn't taste any smoke just LIME!! Didn't get beans as ordered got Cole slaw (can't eat cabbage) the corn bread was over cooked & dark brown. Today I've been in the bathroom with stomach issues. Very disappointed.
This place gets ONE star from us, simply because Google requires at least one. ZERO stars would've been more appropriate. Here's why: 1) The customer service was horrible. The woman at the register was cold and rude when we attempted to order things that were either sold out or not available. When we attempted to order the beer ribs, her response was, "NO, we're out of it." When we attempted to order a fountain drink, she replied "NO...that (the fountain drink machine) is not working...you're only options are here" (as she angrily pointed at the refrigerator with a few canned and bottled drinks in it). 2) As we awaited our order, the service went from BAD to WORSE when we were told that they ran out of pulled pork. Alternatively, I asked for chicken and was told, "we're out of that, too." REALLY?! What kind of BBQ place runs out of pork, chicken AND beef ribs on a SLOW Wednesday?! They're excuse was that they run out of food before closing. BUT - we order our food at 2:26 PM and they close at 4:00 PM. Ninety minutes is hardly close to closing time. 3) Since most of my order included items that were sold out, I settled for a side of steamed jasmine rice. Thankfully, my husband's order was available, BUT the ribs were as tough as leather. You'll note from the attached image that there were lots of scraps because my husband couldn't chew it. Yes, it was THAT tough. And the BBQ sauce bottle at the table was completely empty. NO chicken, no pulled pork, no beef ribs and NO BBQ sauce. WOW! I'm all about supporting small business, and am leaving this post in hopes that the owners see it and improve in a way that makes them proud to put their name to the food and customer service they offer. Our experience was beyond disappointing. We won't be going back.
Came at 1pm on Sunday and they only had brisket and pulled pork. Waited 40 minutes for our food despite asking the staff twice about it and saw later customers get their same orders first. You'd think with such poor service the food must be good, but the brisket was the driest and most bland I've ever had. You can see in the picture how dry it is.
Their menu is confusing…they only do half pound or 1 pound, no quarter. Their brisket takes super dry and doesn’t look like slow cooked. You can see how dry they are from the pictures. Mac and Cheese also not creamy and tastes not good. The only thing that I like is the cornbread. Not recommended.
