Opinions de Totoya Sushi & Tapas San Juan Capistrano
We have been coming here for years and every time we have an incredible experience. The food is delicious, the service is kind and friendly and the atmosphere is delightful (we enjoy sitting outside). Reservations are recommended however we walked in at 5pm when they opened and they were happy to accommodate us. I personally enjoy the Marbella Roll and the Fried Jalapeño tapas.
This is an authentic sushi restaurant and more than 5 stars! Enjoy lunch or dinner here, if it’s the weekend make dinner reservations. Fresh fish, perfectly prepared with unique ingredients and offerings on the menu. They have sushi rolls, Totoya roll is incredible with no rice, salads, main fish entrees, sushi bowls, etc. their tapas includes crispy tuna rice and fried jalapeño with spicy ahi. They serve beer, wine and sake.
Totoya has become my wife and my favorite sushi spot. Try their Gyoza. It’s our favorite appetizer. I like the sushi sampler while my wife likes the rolls. Her favorites are the Fiesta rolls, Marbella, and caterpillar roll. The ambiance is great there but the place is small. Sitting outside is the best is the weather is right which it usually is in San Juan Capistrano. I like this spot even better than Gen Kai in Dana Point which is our friend’s favorite spot. Been to both. This place way better! 😁
Excellent! We have eaten sushi all over California and this place is among the best! It blows away the expensive place by John Wayne Airport (you know the one). We had sashimi, multiple rolls, miso and it was all top notch. Do yourself a favor and get there early. We arrived at 11AM and people were already in line to get this amazing food.

I really love this place. Some of the sushi is a bit overpriced (crispy tuna cakes) but overall the sushi is really well priced and absolutely delicious. It is our go to and I’m always happy to come here. Especially the lunch specials- a nice mix of roll and nigiri or sashimi and soup and salad. So happy they’re in my hood.
Amazing dinner! Everything was so fresh and delicious. Our small group tried 9-10 dishes, each one better than the last. Atmosphere was wonderful and welcoming. Friendly staff. Many locals and regulars. Looking forward to our quick return there!!!
Literally the best sushi I've ever had. The poke bowl is so fresh and the perfect blend of flavors... If I ever was on the show "The best thing I ever ate" I would talk about the baked scallop roll. The flavors are insanely good and the parmesan on top is just amazing. We HAVE to stop here anytime we are in town. Friendly and fun staff, make this a food destination.
I was torn whether or not to mention this little gem because I love the mom & pop feel of the place. The restaurant itself only fits 20-25 people but the food is worth it. Check our their tapas list which boast an array of fusion style delights. I personally had a fit over their Crispy Rice with Spicy Tuna. Actually...anything with their spicy tuna is amazing. Also try their specialty sushi - I had one with truffle salt that was heaven and another with a basil sauce that was SO flavorful. All that and it was pretty affordable. A $20 sake bottle, 3 tapas, 2 sets of sushi and full roll, it was about $60 for two of us. No bad! Hands down, my favorite sushi spot. Totoya is located in a small shopping center so make sure to not miss it.
Make sure to get a serving of their real Wasabi for your sushi!! One or the few places that actually has the good stuff. They're usually pretty busy here but you'll still find seating if you wait a few minutes.
I love this restaurant! Junko is a great hostess/owner , and her positive attitude and kindness sets the mood for a great meal every time. The food also speaks for itself. There are some great food options for those looking to be adventurous. There is also something for kids.
Small menu but very delicious options between tapas and sushi. Fish is always very fresh. Sushi chefs are always very friendly but servers are not always very welcoming. Will still continue to visit here for the food.
So happy that we discovered this SJC neighbourhood gem! Expect authentic, fresh, no-frills sushi and maki rolls, with wonderful chef and staff service (at the sushi bar). Our fave this visit was the 'Aburi Hamachi Roll', but we are looking forward to coming back often to try all the menu options!
Totoya is awesome! Chill vibe and nice atmosphere. We had the salmon lemon roll, calamari, the baked scallops roll, and chicken teriyaki. Food was delicious. Highly recommend!
Spectacular place to grab some quality fresh sushi. The staff are wonderful and accommodating. Never disappoints.

Note: reservations are a must during the weekend! We decided to go there on a whim after a great massage next door and we're lucky enough a different party didn't show up to their reservation. We waited outside while one of the servers/hostess figured out somethings. Communication could have been better but alas we were seated and promptly served. Food was delicious! The Totoya roll is a must, it just melts. The salmon skin hand roll was super crunchy, caterpillar and eel and avocado rolls were smooth and velvety. Not too pricey but we also didn't order alcohol.

5 star flavors! We had great gyoza, sushi, and a roll, all delicious. The staff wasn’t very attentive though. We needed to call their attention to order, to check on a missing item, and to get the bill. But it was a busy night? They need more staff I suppose. Also expected to be full after the amount of money we spent, but alas! We went to get tacos afterward 😅

Terrible food, saushi pieces were so small, they looked as though they were made for a child. Soup was not hot, it was barely warm. Really terrible service Atmosphere was challenging. The music was so loud we could not hear the server. Whe asked if she could lower it. When she returned, we coukd not hear her soooo we asked again, tge 2nd time, her reply was, "I already did", I asked for the 3rd time, she finally did. Really?? News flash for the server, you wouldn't have a job if customers did not come in. Ill never go back
#Warning Dirty food, dirty employees. Absolutely and strictly for those with the lowest food and hygiene standards. Wouldn't ever think that this hole in the wall would ever survive in an mid-upper class neighborhood. Guess that goes to show that a fair amount of the people who eat here are probably not local and if they are they are definitely gross. Food and service was so nasty that I didn't even think twice about touching it. ( mens hair was on the sushi plate, waitress stuck her thumb into the soup and rice and she was very sloppy, the cup with the tea was dirty and had lint and fuzz all around the rim ) I guess the blind old people who live here can't tell. But how can you miss the dirty floors and unclean ceiling??? I wouldn't dare say that I wouldn't even feed my dog this garbage, but I would even feel guilty feeding the coyotes who live outdoors as this gross mess I dare not call Food, will definitely give diarrhea to anyone who is used to eating clean.
My family & I dined at this restaurant for first time last week. We recently moved across the street so we had to give it a try. The food was not as good as other local sushi restaurants ; the service was tremendously worse. In all honesty I believe it was the service that made the entire experience, including the food terrible. The soup taste like water, and the sushi had a very odd smell to it. I don’t know about other people however, when I go out to a restaurant, I expect good customer service and a smile on a face. Fail at both of those things and you will get a better view & a never returning customer.
