We had couple of salads and they were so delicious! Enjoyed desserts! Fine Dine-in Experience. Loved the service. Fancy place and yummy food.
Epic place to eat (by our standards), always great service, food and atmosphere (Bring a flashlight they like it dark in the evenings sometimes). Great place to propose to a future ex-spouse. Prices are high but not as high as an ex-spouse
We came to Duck Soup for my son's thirty fifth birthday. We drove 11 hours. We had the most amazing experience with the food, atmosphere, the owners and staff. This is a MUST place to visit. We will definitely be traveling back to Friday Harbor and visit the Duck Soup again and again. We spent a wonderful evening visiting with Analise, and her daughter, Siri and Chef Bill. We are in love all the way around!!!
My husband and I each had the filet mignon and it was delicious--- cooked to perfection with a beautiful presentation. Our waitress was excellent, always available, but not hovering. The atmosphere is great, warm & cozy with a fire pit to enjoy when the weather is nice. What really sold us on the great folks here is that when the taxi service was tied up for quite a bit, the hostess -- I'm sorry, I forgot your name :( -- took us back to town. She was lovely & gracious--keep in mind, it was the end of the night and she had to return to the restaurant to wrap things up. Overall, outstanding meals and service. We can't wait to return!
Probably the BEST restaurant we have been to in quite some time. We were visiting from Seattle and received many recommendations for this restaurant. We had a 18 month old with us but decided to give it a shot! The staff were very accommodating with us coming in with no reservation. (Although I highly recommend a reservation since that seemed to be the last table) EVERY dish was packed with flavor. Fresh, great texture and amazing presentation. Hats off to the kitchen staff! We had the clams and burrata for appetizers and the lamb, scallops and duck for main entrees. We had to waive down the server and host for a few things, but the restaurant was busy and we did come in with no reservation so I completely understand. If you’re ever in Roche harbor highly recommend!! We will be coming back if we visit and telling many friends:)
Read a couple of the negative reviews and I have no idea what they’re talking about. We came here on a whim and honestly just for the clams that we saw on a google review pic. We never expected the place to look this amazing. The lighting, the ambience, the fire place we were seated directly in front of. Amazing. Service was impeccable and beyond polite. The food was incredible. We both ordered the filet mignon which was easily 10+ ounces and perfectly cooked. Honestly one of the best filets that I’ve had. It came with potatoes and a broccoli. For the price—fantastic. We had a bottle of wine as well which paired great. My only slight complaint is there could be some more local options for wines. We would absolutely come here again. Especially in the summer so we could enjoy the outside fire pits. Highly recommend this “out of place” fine dining experience.
5 stars for the creativity! We enjoyed the calamari appetizer - good flavor with kimchi, although the panko was a bit overfried and was tough to chew. The black cod was super tender - almost melts in the mouth; the other ingredients in the dish also pleasantly surprised us - shiitake mushroom, glass noddles, etc. the duck bread was very juicy and flavorful as well. Would love to come back again to try out other seasonal menus!
Lovely place with such beautiful and delicious food! I went here with my parents and niece and we had a great night. The presentation was incredible. The samosas were to die for. I also loved my scallops. The drink had a raspberry pucker right from the bushes behind us. Highly recommend. Duck and pork in photos as well.
What. An. Experience. Our waitress, Anna was a gem. We ordered Smoked Pork Belly for an appetizer, so tasty. Three of us together ordered the Confit Duck, Pork Loin and Sea Bass. Presentation was absolutely stunning and the flavors were perfect. The meals were absolutely worth what the cost, just as an FYI! Thank you for the experience.
San Juan Island is our special place/beloved vacation spot. Whenever we visit San Juan, a dinner at Duck Soup is one of the highlights of our visit. Set in a beautiful, indoor/outdoor, laid-back building (on a pond with ducks)... everything about Duck Soup is delightful. Their signature martinis are a must. Their seasonal menu is exceptional & has me coming back, year after year.
Food, service, atmosphere everything was perfect. One of the best dining experiences in the state. The restaurant has a close to forest feel and is set up beautifully. We were seated by the door to the outdoor area and had spiders close to us. Thankfully they were not interested in us or our food. Tables in the main dining space would have been better.
Duck Soup is an experience and a pleasure. We've been fans of Duck Soup for over two decades now. And tonight was our first visit since the covid pandemic occurred. It was still as exquisite and marvelous as always and a great way to spend a Father's Day evening. The food has amazingly delightful with fanciful layers of flavors. Their delicious creations are truly unique and incredible. We started with appetizers of their Pork Belly, which was so tender it just melted in your mouth, and Lamb Meatballs, which were savory and perfectly spiced. For entrées we had the Duck Breast, which was fantastic with an orange-carrot puree, and the Spring Pasta with the bright and lively flavors or sweet peppers and locally grown fresh peas. All capped off with martinis and their unfathomable, but truly remarkable, Dandelion Ice Cream Sundaes! WOW! The staff, many of whom have been there for years (huge thanks to Inness and Anna Lisa!) are the most exemplary and incredible I've ever seen. They really go above and beyond to make sure your dining experience is superb. Bravo to you all! They have an excellent selection of curated wines and some fun seasonal cocktails. And their menu changes with the seasons so there are always new dishes and flavors to experience. Reservations are definitely needed. We highly recommend this place and can't wait to come back again! And thank you Duck Soup for the many wonderful, and delicious, memories! Just one suggestion to future patrons: either reserve a booth or bring your own seat cushion (see below). PS to Duck Soup - your new dining chairs, although artistically rustic-modern, were absolute torture to sit on for our 2 hour meal! Just a small suggestion to add seat cushions. Or better yet, burn them all and get something comfortable. That's all. 😄
My partner and I came here for a Saturday dinner per recommendation of our host. We ordered drinks, a starter and 2 entrees to share. We loved cozy atmosphere, carefully crafted menu, beautifully presented dishes with the fresh local ingredients. However, the waiter forgot to put part of the order in and we ended up having one less entree (famous duck!). Everything took a really long time to come. After a reminder about the second entree, the waiter said she never put it in the order because she thought we didn’t need it. No idea why she’d think so BUT better ask, don’t guess! No apologies were offered, as well as no attempt to fix the situation. When we asked how long it’ll take if we put it in now, she said “well, we have a lot of big parties tonight…” so we decided to pass. Overall, we felt the waitress was either super busy or ignored us on purpose. Not a good experience for $100 pp. Delicious cream brûlée but dandelion ice cream didn’t have any flavor - didn’t live up to our expectations.
We visited back in 2021 and the food was incredible. Smaller, local, creative portions. Our most recent visit on Wednesday was a little disappointing. The staff seemed slightly aloof and were not able to answer all of questions, and the food wasn’t quite as good as I remember. The bread and appetizers were fantastic but the entrees were disappointing. Big plates of watery mashed potatoes, soggy asparagus. My pasta looked appealing but I came to find out that it had an entire can of corn in it which really took away from all other flavors. The food just wasn’t appropriate to the price, the price should either be lower for this quality or the chefs should refine their work.
Beautiful ambiance— such a cute spot tucked away in the woods, and we were excited to celebrate our anniversary here. Our server started off great and first impressions were promising. Unfortunately, things went downhill fast. Our feature crab salad with homemade chips arrived with a small garden bug on the plate. We sent it back, but it looked like they just removed the bug and replaced the flower garnish. I get that plating with flowers can attract little creatures, but it definitely threw us off. The chips were soggy too- overall, not a solid start. Our server apologized, but her energy shifted afterward, and nothing was comped. My husband’s duck and my scallops were fine, though the flavors were a bit odd. We would’ve stayed for dessert or another drink, but it felt like we were being rushed out, and the last straw was finding bugs floating in my husband’s cocktail! I’m not someone who makes a scene, but it really soured what should’ve been a special night. For the price, the food and service didn’t live up to the setting. Lovely atmosphere, but sadly, I’d spend your money elsewhere
Let me start by saying our group of 3 saw this place in blog posts, Eater, etc and we were super excited to go for dinner during a short trip to the islands. Entering, the vibe of the place is like an upscale cabin and was a cozy atmosphere. From there, things started out promising but went downhill...the homemade bread and whipped butters were so tasty that we ended up ordering a second serving even though it'd incur an extra charge! The appetizer of kale caesar wasn't bad but definitely small for the price, and the "pulled duck" in it was basically overdried duck jerky. Also....there was no kale present in the kale caesar? The entrees were bizarre and a waste of money. $54 for scallops that were burnt, fresh but unflavorful / not cooked with any fat or seasoning, and accompanied by the driest and plainest "vindaloo curry and Valencia orange" lentils (could taste some spicing but juuust barely and again, so dry), basic daikon salad (with what I think were diced mango bits? But had almost no taste), straightforward and sparse lime yogurt crema (which definitely was just yogurt and a little lime juice), and fresh mango slices (ironically the most flavorful part of the plate). Seriously, I've made better in a Hello Fresh meal. I won't go into detail on the other entrees ordered, but in short, the curated vegan dish was not as described and had a strange flavor, and the namesake duck confit was drowned in what can only be described as teriyaki sauce with flavorless, blanched, untrimmed green beans. Not to mention service was inexplicably slow, and the entire dining experience took nearly 3 hours. Our waitress was nice, but she didn't take our food orders for 20 mins, and our entrees didn't come out until 30+ mins later. No update, no check-ins. On the surface, the menu looks like classic PNW with Asian-inspired flavors, and the item descriptions make you think it'd be executed infinitely better than it was. This place is raved about by bloggers and patrons up until relatively recently -- I think something in the management, kitchen, or both must have changed because this was an abysmal experience and waste of a meal. I know this place's menu offerings depend on what's seasonal, but the execution of the dishes we received -- especially for the price -- was entirely unacceptable.
Flavor was fine. The server was friendly and tried her best, but the kitchen made us wait 90 minutes for entrees and delivered the food lukewarm. I feel like we got our food early because we complained, and other tables that arrived at the same time were still waiting. Will not return unless future reviews indicate significant improvement.
I have to say we had higher expectations as we dined in Duck Soup 2 years ago, and that time, AMAZING. So after 2 years, I still remember it. But this time, Disappointed! Food quality: the dishes are really not my taste. Very very salty. As for the lamb rack, we wanna to give some to toddler, fully cooked please and still full of red blood inside. The scallop is with rice, the duck is with something looks like yellow rice porridge….. I saw some other pics from recent reviews, they looks different. I am guessing might be special everyday? For today, not worthy for the price. Service: As we were talking to the server that we wanna order dessert to my little one. The desert we ordered contained alcohol inside, we didn’t notice that. I asked what the liquid on top is, she said water or melting cream first time. And the little one ate, which is burning her tongue…. She checked with chef and told us it is alcohol…. I assume they should get to know more about their dishes.
