En su élégante jaula de fierro verde, Mi Feo prepara meticulosamente sus tortas cuidando cada etapa del proceso hasta las migajas de los bolillos sirven para quitar el aceite y forma parte de la decoración del lugar. Tortería Mi Feo is a small shop located in the Tangamanga Market in the city center. It specializes in selling food, sandwiches in this case. Don't be fooled by the humble facade and establishment; the ugly one is an artisan; there's no better word to describe him. These are my favorite sandwiches in all of San Luis Potosí. I've been taken to other traditional places—El Rey, Fittos, El Tigre, Las Tortugas, Tortas Locas Hipocampo, El Atorón, etc.—but I always end up coming back here when I'm passing through the city. The wait can be long; in fact, on this last visit, I arrived just as it was opening, and even though my order was the only one, it took 30 minutes to get delivered. When you have several orders together, it can take over an hour for your food to be delivered—you've been warned. However, the wait is worth it, as demonstrated by the people who come religiously every day to order and wait. Each sandwich is prepared methodically; just watching it work is interesting. First, he heats the lard, slices the meat, and places it on the griddle, then cuts the bolillo and proceeds to place the tops on the griddle. He places the finished meat on the bread crusts and proceeds to add the toppings (tomato, onion, avocado, salsa, sour cream, and salt in that order). He plates or wraps the sandwiches and adds the toasted chiles. As for the flavor, it's exceptional. The only thing to note is that the sandwiches are small, especially if you're coming from out of town. But that's because the bolillo—and the tortilla—in general are tiny in San Luis. The cost per sandwich is currently $35, but for years it has remained at around twenty pesos. A must-see.

Located at the side entrance of the Tangamanga market in downtown San Luis Potosí. The torta is delicious and very affordable at 35 pesos, compared to other places where you pay three or even four times more. The flavor is excellent, the bread is good, just be patient since the man who makes them doesn't have any helpers, but it's worth the wait. I recommend also asking him to add some "chulitos alzados" (a type of fried dough pastry), which he makes very tasty.
