Opinions de Palette Tea Garden San Mateo
My sister and I ventured out to this all-day dim sum restaurant in San Mateo and we couldn’t be happier! We had a wonderful experience here and highly recommend! Palette is conveniently located in the San Mateo shopping mall on the Pinstripe side. There’s a free parking lot right there which is only a few minutes of walking to the restaurant. On the outside looking in, Palette looks modest. But one step inside will take you all the way to Beijing/China. The reception area is immaculately decorated with cultural artifacts. Staff will promptly greet you in a friendly demeanor and lead you to your table. Highly recommend you book before you come as this place is very popular and fills up fast even on weekdays! There are huge screens on the main dining area which show case famous ancient Chinese brush paintings. You’ll fall in love with the ambience here and forget that you’re in San Mateo. You’ll momentarily be taken to fancy restaurants in Beijing or China ☺️ We were so impressed with the tea selection here. We each ordered a pot of tea. I forgot the name but one of the teas tasted just like milk tea without any milk in it! Our server Victoria was attentive and helpful. She realized we ordered a lot of food so she came over and offered to move us to a bigger table. She also realized we ordered duplicate items (one dish was already contained in another dish) so she let us know she canceled the other dish for us. Later when we needed to pack all our leftovers to go, the staff was super helpful and packed everything nicely and nearly for us, which appreciated! Food came out in reasonable amount of time and order. I love the way they present their food here. Just like the name of their restaurant, all the dishes and utensil tie to the theme of painting and let your dining table be a palette for your eyes and your taste buds! My sis and I enjoyed all the food that we ordered and yes we ordered a lot. The Peking Duck, Hakka salted chicken and Dungeness crab stood out the most to us, though all other dishes are tasty as well. Overall, food wise, I’ll give them 8/10. But ambience and food presentation wise, they definitely get a 10/10 from us. And don’t miss out the teas when you’re there :)

Little on the pricey side, but well worth it! Everything was delicious especially the Peking duck. I have not had anything here that wasn't just delicious... Cant wait till next time...
This is one of those places where the hardest part is deciding what not to order. We keep coming back here for celebrations and bringing friends, and every single time people are blown away. The menu is huge, beautifully presented, and everything we’ve tried has been genuinely delicious. Dim sum is a must — walnut shrimp is crispy and addictive, chicken claws are perfect for sharing, and I can never skip the durian duck puffs (adorable swan shape and surprisingly amazing). The drink menu is also impressive, from cocktails and wine to a great tea selection. Attentive service, cozy vibe, and always a fun, satisfying meal. This place never misses. We’ll go back for Chinese New Year celebration this year as well.
Man, I wish I remembered to take pictures of the food, but I was too eager to dig in. Food was absolutely delicious. Though it was my first time eating at a dim sum, the family style plates allowed me to taste everything. We enjoyed our food and the hospitality that the staff offered. Great atmosphere and service. They accommodated our nit allergy restrictions which was greatly appreciated. Order Chicken & Bacon Fried Rice - great flavor Iberico Cha Siu - tender and cooked perfectly Chicken Soup XLB - tasty dumplings Wagyu Beef Chow Fun - ordered twice!
Second time here after liking it a lot my first time and this time was just as good. Can't go wrong with Koi Palace or any of their sister restaurants. Made a reservation the day of on a Sunday night. We ordered the palette soup dumplings $15, siu mai sampler $24, half Peking duck $38, and xo sauce and wagyu fried rice $25. Every dish was fantastic. High quality ingredients. Excellent flavors, not excessively salty. Definitely not cheap, but I think it's fair for the quality and portions. We even had leftovers. Very nice high end looking interior, spacious with high ceilings. Service was decent. Lots of free parking. Would go back again
Came for dinner with friends and did not disappoint. I actually thought the price point was super reasonable given it’s a nicer Chinese restaurant that you can bring your in laws to without looking cheap 😅 . I mean chipotle bowls are running me $20 a pop nowadays so I was pleasantly surprised by the bill. Had a ton of dishes that I failed to take pictures of cause girl eats before her camera does 💁♀️. Standouts to me were the duck, Iberico pork and egg yolk crab. I struggle with liking egg yolk crab cause I always find it waay too rich, heavy and egg yolky- but the one here was perfect. Shoutout to the bartender cause the mixed drinks were delishhh. Lychee martinis and the oolong tea one were top tier. OH, and I almost forgot. It’s silly but I really like that they put their teapot over a candle so it stays nice and hot. I hate lukewarm tea so that alone has captured my heart.
Had an amazing dinner experience here. Was surprised by the quality of the food and the artistic touch they added to each dish. The service was nothing like what you expect from an Asian restaurant; everyone was so friendly and they really cater specifically to the customer with attention to detail. You can tell that a lot of thought went into each concept and everything was delicious. Not just the food, all of the cocktails were uniquely made and all the flavors blended extremely well into a balanced fusion of taste. Highly recommend the Peking Duck, Iberico Cha Siu (cooked to perfection), Pork Soup XLB, Garlic steamed Surf Clam, and Wagyu & roasted garlic. For cocktails I highly recommend the Palette highball, expresso martini, and lychee martini. They have a professional mixologist that puts so much thought into a creative bar menu. Overall a 10/10 experience, very excited for the new location opening in Orange County soon!
Best dim sum ever! There was a slight wait, but we quickly got a table. The soup dumplings are a must eat, they are so delicious. Additionally, the chicken feet are a must try, and were so chewy and tasted amazing! The cucumbers were crispy and simply mouthwatering. The dishes were presented so beautifully, and were making my mouth water! All in all, this is the perfect lunch stop for dim sum!!
I have visited a couple of times. This is the most stable and upscale Chinese restaurant in the neighborhood. Reservations are essential as it is often rather crowded! The food was never a disappointment, and every dish we ordered was delicious 👍 My favorite dish was the shrimp and walnuts, which was amazing. It would be nice to have some kind of call bell at the table because the restaurant is so big and it's hard to call the restaurant staff 😅
We've missed having a good dim sum place on the Peninsula and now we have a new favorite. It's been at Hillsdale Mall for 2 years and we went for the first time tonight. While it serves dim sum for lunch, and has a limited dim sum menu in the afternoon, they have a full menu for dinner as well. Service was great. We were greeted in a warm and welcoming manner. The food was really good. We ordered mostly dim sum with the green beans which tasted like my Chinese aunt makes. I liked the Palette soup dumplings better than the pork ones but both were good. The egg custards looked unusual in the photo so we opted for the custard dumplings which are one of my favorites. They were delicious. The ambience is fun and lively. It reminds me of one of our favorite dim places in SF but much closer to home. We will definitely be going back.
We got reservations the day before and were quick to get seated. The plates were unique because it had a section to put 4 different sauces. The sauces were a gimmick. Soy sauce was the best followed by the hot mustard. The green and white sauces didn’t seem to go with anything. The best sauce was the slightly sweet soy sauce that came with the sichuan seafood dumplings. We used that sauce to flavor the other dishes. The Peking duck was flavorful, but the skin was slightly too chewy. There also wasn’t enough veges for the wrap. The best dishes were the crispy unagi rice crepe and crab butter dumpling. Both had a unique taste and texture. As for the other dishes, they were mainly average or a bit above average. I’d skip the palette XLB sampler (skin too thick), ha gow collection (slightly bland), wagyu fried rice (slightly bland), yuzu walnut prawn puffs (too hard). I would go back and try dishes that other dim sum restaurants don’t have, like the crispy rice crepes
I was genuinely impressed with this place. I ended up coming here a number of times for both lunch and dinner during my trip to USA back in May. There was never a wait time for the times I went, which was a huge plus. The quality across their menu is remarkable – I tried a variety of dishes and not a single one disappointed. Standouts were the Boston Lobster with fried sticky rice and the excellent Peking duck. The Manila clams were big and juicy, and the seafood tofu and xiaolongbao were great. The only reason I did not rate it as a full 5 stars is that it's a bit expensive. Would definitely visit again for special occasions !
We came here to catch up with friends. The dinner was okay, but not great. There are better Chinese restaurants in the area, and they’re usually not as expensive as this place. My friend paid for dinner, but I just think the food quality could be better for the price. But you’re not picky, this place might be fine for you. Either way, enjoy!
We visited this restaurant on Father’s Day with a group of seven. The wait was about an hour, which was expected for a busy holiday. Once seated, we ordered a variety of dishes. The truffle crab shiu mai, Shanghai dumplings, abalone longevity noodles, and fried shrimp balls all had unique twists, but nothing stood out as exceptional. While the flavors were interesting, we found ourselves preferring traditional dim sum instead. Service was excellent, with attentive staff who managed the busy crowd well. Overall, it was a pleasant dining experience. I would recommend this place if you’re looking for dim sum with a creative twist, but we’ll be sticking to more traditional options in the future.
The food is okay. Atmosphere is very nice, passed by a few times and decided to try it. I’m very picky on authentic Chinese food. This place leans fancy and i wouldn’t say super authentic. The Peking duck is okay, the duck skin is not crispy or thick enough comparing to how authentic Peking ducks are supposed to be done. Also tried their signature palette soup dumplings, a little disappointed… The egg tarts tastes great. Their fried vegetables were good. They also automatically charged 18% tip for a party of 2 🤷♀️ would not be back again. If anyone wants to try great Peking duck, go to Z&Y Peking Duck in downtown SF.
This restaurant has an impressive atmosphere that works well for hosting out-of-town guests, but unfortunately the experience doesn’t live up to the hype. The dim sum is extremely pricey for very small portions, and while the presentation is decent, the flavors are mediocre at best. Weekend wait times are painfully long, even with a reservation, which makes the visit even less enjoyable. It’s not a place worth returning to often, especially considering the noticeable decline in food quality over the years. The much-talked-about duck is a major disappointment—dry, flavorless, and outrageously overpriced at $74. Overall, you’re paying more for the ambiance and reputation than for the food itself.
My husband and I haven't been to this restaurant in a while and everything has changed. The delicious dishes are gone, replaced by expensive and unpalatable American Chinese food. It was very expensive and the two of us were shocked by the bill in the end. Mandatory 18% tip even if there are only two people. Tips and tax were $50. Will never come back to eat again. It tastes really bad. I hope you won’t come here.
