Opinions de Opal Restaurant & Bar Santa Barbara
This was a very nice restaurant. Relaxing atmosphere and servers were attentive. Food was really good. The Salmon was perfect and very fresh! We had a small wedding party about 30 people and they reserved their side room for us. It was on a Monday night and everything was really nice.
5 stars is not enough. This was the best dining experience my family has ever had. Service was delightful and the food was even better. The drinks were so unique along with the menu options. I wouldn’t miss out on eating here.
Fantastic food and great service. Dined in the outdoor section during the rain and stayed warm and dry. Both, the fish and the steak were very well prepared and delicious. Great cocktails too. Our children loved the kids' menu as well. Definitely check this place out if you're in SB.
Truly a gem of a restaurant in Santa Barbara. Everything was amazing. Every course and every drink was amazing. Every dish had masterful flavors. A rare treat to see a restaurant nail every dish with such perfection.
We enjoyed dining here at the spur of the moment and just passing through town! We did not have a reservation, but there was space at the bar to sit. It was a wonderful experience. My husband and I do not drink, however the bartender made us some delicious non-alcoholic beverages. I had the lamb and my husband had the steak. Both were delicious. We would highly recommend the delicious food and enjoyable service.
I ordered a very delicious pasta dish that had an amazing chipotle sauce. I totally recommend it if you find it on the menu. The staff was personable and my old-fashion cocktail was fantastic. I recommend reserving a table because this place has heavy traffic and for good reason. Pleasant experience indeed.
Wonderful food, wonderful staff. Richard was so kind and helpful and patient with myself and my mother when trying to schedule my graduation dinner. Everything went with such ease, everyone had a wonderful time, and everyone enjoyed the food! Their steak was amazing. Sabina, our waitress, was exceptional in every way, between remembering everyone's food and drink orders, to being informative about the menu. Thank you Richard, Sabina and all Opal staff! We will for sure be coming back.
We had our wedding dinner here this weekend and it was amazing!! Richard and his team went above and beyond to ensure our experience was more than we could've wished for!! The food was delicious, the service was outstanding and the atmosphere was beautiful!!! Thank you again for helping to make our day so special!!!
Loved the service provided from staff to food.! My family and I arrived without a reservation on a Sunday evening, and the gentleman whom I think owns the restaurant, took the effort to host us. Surely enough they were able to accommodate a last minute outdoor dining experience for my family of 6 adults 2 kids. Outdoor dining hasn't been as peaceful for me as it was here. Staff was very attentive and patient. Everything you would hope for from staff, when a 30% tip is said to be automatically added to your bill with any group of 5+ I believe.
Had Reservations and when arriving at Restaurant was seated within 2 minutes. Our server Paul was excellent and very attentive. Well drinks were tasty and wine selection was good. Shrimp appetizer was delicious. Ordered three different entrees that were great tasting. Had dessert, which we thought were large portions and amazing. Just had Great time between the four of us.
Excellent service from the hostess to the bus staff. Most importantly the food was prepared exceptionally. Couldn't be happier with this selection. The price point was reasonable, not low, but not outrageous. The food presentation was beautiful. The atmosphere was relaxed yet nice.
My girlfriend and I were in town for the weekend. We decided to go with steak for dinner and we found this amazing restaurant. Everything went fine for us! The service was wonderful. The waiter gave us several recommendations on the menu. We ordered the Asian Glazed Crispy Calamari which was delicious. For entrees I had the 14 oz. Grilled Ribeye steak and my girl had the Herb Grilled Filet Mignon which were cooked med-rare to perfection. For dessert we finished off with the Gelato mix and "Like Water for Chocolate" surprise which really hit the spot. A+
Opal is a great restaurant. The owner (or perhaps manager, I’m unsure) was a really kind gentleman who immediately made me feel welcomed to the restaurant. Then my server (Sabina) continued that sentiment as she was delightful and really sweet to converse with. She’s also a professional ice skater too... not everyday you get to meet one of those! My food (filet mignon) was cooked perfectly (I ordered it medium) and tasted really good. Honestly, it was not too short of what you would expect at a high end steakhouse. Pretty impressive. The dessert and drinks were solid too. Combine all of this with nice patio seating in a less crowded part of downtown and it all makes for a perfect evening. Overall, my experience was great from the second I was greeted to the minute I left.
Had dinner at Opal and it was fantastic. Nice ambience, great service from Anna and the food was amazing. We shared a mushroom risotto as an appetizer which was really flavored well with garlic and Rosemary . We had the salmon, vegetable Napoleon and wild mushroom pizza. All delish! Highly recommended
Ate dinner last Tuesday at Opal and was our first time dining there. Our dining experience was exceptional, food was well presented and cooked perfectly, service was top notch, shoutout to our server Sabina for being very friendly, attentitive to us and checking in on us frequently, also shoutout to the manager and hostess for also being friendly to us. Overall, I highly recommend checking out Opal and definitely be back again. :)
What a gem to find! The food was absolutely incredible, no matter what you ordered, and the people who work there are very accommodating, attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. Can’t recommend this place enough!! We’ll definitely be coming back!
Drove down from the Bay Area to take my Daughter out for her birthday. This place was amazing. I can totally recommend the Wild Mushroom Pizza and the Lemon grass Salmon!!!
My Husband, dog and I went here for dinner last week. We sat outside and had a wonderful dinner with excellent service. Paying attention to our dog as well. It was a lovely meal and experience. Also, my Husband left his credit card on the table by accident. And they were kind enough to mail it back to him. I highly recommend this place. They were outstanding!
We had a great dinner at Opal! What endeared us to this restaurant was the perfect balance of exceptional food, friendly yet upscale atmosphere without being too pretentious, and wonderful server in Paul who contributed to a most enjoyable evening. We will definitely be back and highly recommend.
Matt was our friendly host who made us feel like a regular. Bustling, busy dinner hour—fun atmosphere. Sirloin tips on angel hair pasta were delicious.
We chose Opal Restaurant for our Thanksgiving dinner, as we wanted a restaurant that had a traditional option, plus options for more picky family members and kids. After looking at a few options, Opal seemed to have the best options without gouging our budget. And Opal did not disappoint. We had a 1:30pm reservation, and everyone that was waiting was seated efficiently. Of course there is always that one guy who tries to cut the line with everyone waiting... However, another customer and the Manager did a good job of putting him behind those ahead of him. Some people are clueless. The Thanksgiving meal was awesome. We shared the Turkey Roast, Salmon Encroute, and Filet Mignon. All excellent with generous vegetables and garnish also. The drinks were tasty with the Blackberry Jalapeno Margarita and Passion Flower being favorites. Our service was excellent. The young lady who served us was always present, and other servers always around to refill waters, take away plates, and ask if we needed anything. There were a few locals in Opal also, and the way they were treated (as other customers) was always with smiles and recognition. We highly recommend Opal, and will be coming back when we revisit Santa Barbara. W walking by the ocean in Morro Bay, we saw Dorn's up on the hill overlooking the shops. Looking for a dinner place, we pulled up the menu, and decided from the reviews it would be good for the family. When we went in for a Monday dinner, the place was very busy. Our host was nice, and said we would be seated in 10 minutes. 6 minutes later we were, with a table overlooking Morro Bay. Nice job! The Service was very good, as our waters came quickly as did our waitress. She explained the menu and specials and took our drink orders. There was always someone nearby to refill our waters, or clear away plates without being intrusive. The clam chowder was very good. We also had the Sole which was poached, and blackened Salmon. Both came with mashed potatoes and various vegetables. We were both full after, and satisfied with the fantastic meal. Thank you for a great time Dorn's.
Fantastic!! I can't rave about this place enough. The service was excellent, our server was very knowledgeable, personable and charming. Our food came in a timely manner despite there being a dinner rush and the quality of our dishes was off the charts phenomenal. If we didn't live 6 hours away this would become one of our favorite spots to visit monthly. Be mindful this is a bit of a pricey spot to dine at, but the quality is well worth it. Hats off the the amazing chefs and staff!!
We loved everything about this restaurant! The person greeting us in the front was great, our server was great, the food was amazing!
Dined there twice. Both times were excellent. The menu has a good variety of food choices and prices. The service is friendly and professional. The atmosphere is upscale and welcoming. Give yourself a treat for a special occasion or anytime dinner.
Old Fashioned was strong! Service was great, attentive and kind! Great locations too right next to the Arlington theater. Prime spot to see the Christmas tree this time of year.
Really enjoyed this place! Everyone we encountered was super friendly and provided great service. Our waiter was so helpful and everything we ate was delicious! Would recommend this to anyone! Also my sister has a gluten and dairy sensitivity and they modified everything for her.
Wonderful dinner. Stopped by while passing through on a Monday evening mid March 2025 after Grand Prix. Amazing food, catered to gluten allergies and best drinks and dessert I’ve had in months. I hope to return every time I pass through after the races. Just absolutely incredible!!
Amazing. Everything about it. From the scallop salad to the seared tuna to the paella to the TIRA MISU AND GELATO. Kayla was great with us.
Went to dinner for a birthday celebration and could not have had a better night. Our server was very friendly and helpful. He recommended a delicious vegetarian dish and gave great recommendations of wine pairing with our plates. The food was insanely good. Also the chocolate pecan pie is to die for. Will definitely come back for the next birthday!
We had a perfect dinner last night with pasta, seafood, and tiramisu. The staff was attentive in their amazing costumes, and we enjoyed fabulous live music to celebrate Halloween.
As always, Richard and his fine staff made our anniversary dinner memorable. Their coconut shrimp are uniquely prepared and delicious. The Perfect 10 martini with gorganzola stuffed olives was a great mix with perfectly prepared steaks. Just the right amount of attention kept our table cleared and waters refilled. Great job!
We had one night for a great dinner in Santa Barbara and chose Opal at the recommendation of our Cheshire Cat B&B host, who said Opal is popular with locals. Both the mushroom risotto and lamb chops we ordered were fabulous. Our waitperson recommended the lamb as something everyone raves about, and that includes us now. Easy to eat GF. Most of the menu fits the bill. Nice wine selections and my husband thoroughly enjoyed his martini and bacon wrapped tiger shrimp over a bed of baby spinach with some sort of bacon vinaigrette. An easy walk down State St, they have plenty of both indoor and outdoor seating. We would definitely return to Opal next time in Santa Barbara!
Food was delicious and service was incredible. We shared the hot seafood salad, I got the filet mignon pomodoro, and we shared the chocolate mousse dessert. We waited 30 mins, despite reservations, but our server was so very sweet. If you get Shannon as a server, you’re in good hands!
Opal has a really nice selection of menu items. I love the attention to detail of the outdoor seating on State Street. You'll especially like Opal's mushroom-based dishes, if that's your thing. If you're looking for a relaxed pace, nice dining experience that's not overdressed, this is your spot
Opal is a hidden gem that truly shines when it comes to its culinary offerings, particularly the Chilean Seabass dinner. From the moment you step inside, the warm ambiance and attentive staff make you feel at home. The Chilean Seabass itself is nothing short of spectacular; perfectly cooked with a flaky texture that practically melts in your mouth. Served a bed of vibrant sautéed vegetables, the fish is accompanied by a delicate sauce that enhances its natural flavors without overpowering them. Each bite bursts with freshness, making it clear that the ingredients are of the highest quality. The portion size is generous, ensuring that you leave satisfied but not overly stuffed. What truly sets Opal apart is the attention to detail—from the exquisite presentation of the dish to the thoughtful wine pairing suggestions provided by the knowledgeable waitstaff. The atmosphere is perfect for both intimate dinners and celebratory gatherings, making it versatile for any occasion. In conclusion, Opal’s Chilean Seabass dinner is an unforgettable experience that will have you returning for more. If you’re in the area, be sure to indulge in this culinary delight—you won’t be disappointed! Highly recommended for seafood lovers!
Food was very good and the service was great! Ana was very friendly and had good recommendations. We'll be back to try out more dishes (this time we got the paella and the daily special pizza).
We had a training dinner for 13 people, and everything was amazing! Everybody enjoyed the appetizers, loved their main dish, fantastic desserts, and fine wines and craft cocktails. Paul was an awesome server!
I ate at Opal tonight in a party of 6 as we regularly do on Christmas Eve. The food was good, but I was surprised to see a 20% ‘large party’ surcharge added to our bill. I can only imagine some parties don’t notice this and add a similar service charge!
Great find on State St. Paul our waiter was the best! Nice menu with lots of choices. We sat outside on the sidewalk. There was a quitarist playing nearby and the music was perfect. Not too loud and contributed to the outside experience/ambiance. There are lots of restaurant choices nearby but I highly recommend Opal and Paul. I don't think you will be disappointed!
Everything was great. The service paced the meal to our liking which was great, didn't feel rushed. It was a nice, busy atmosphere without being too loud. All staff was attentive and kept our table clean and well watered. Food was of course great. Perfect place to hit before a show.
I have always been a fan of this restaurant. If you ask locals most would agree that this place has the best steak in town! We recently went and celebrated our company holiday party and I’m just blown away by the service! We had six orders of the coconut shrimp, they were so good we had to keep them coming. The truffle mushroom appetizer as well was insane so much flavor. Many of us got the filet(of course) all cooked to perfection. They catered to all our needs and kept the drinks flowing. We had an absolute blast. Thank you Paul & Mark and the rest of the team.
My first time in Santa Barbara and my boyfriend took me to a nice dinner at Opal - it did NOT disappoint. Shannon, our server, was fantastic. The food was to die for - I had the penne chicken piccata pasta dish and my boyfriend had the pesto shrimp pizza. For dessert we had the crème brûlée (one of the best we have both had). The whole dining atmosphere was cute and cozy. 10/10 will be dining here again!
The food is sooo good here. The quality of the food down to the bread before dinner was absolutely delicious. Try the chicken penne with chipotle sauce. That dish is super delicious! The grilled chicken mushroom is also great. Good service by staff. Will return when we are in the area.
I was here on Monday so it’s not too busy but highly recommend to make reservation for the weekend. Food and service is good. Salads serving size is pretty big. Very nice and classic decoration inside and spacious patio. Recommended Spinach scallops salad and Filet Pasta. For drink: Suntory sour is delicious.
They have a variety of menu selections (seafood, steak, pasta and pizza), including specials for the day. Ordered a bottle of wine at a lower price point and had two entrees and shared a dessert...was not too expensive overall. Friendly staff, nicely decorated for the holidays. Was also able to peek the holiday parade from our table in the front! Highly recommend!
Food and cocktails were excellent. Service wasn't so great unfortunately. Our server spent a lot of time talking to regulars. Never asked us if we wanted to order more drinks. Another server had to ask us about dessert and get us the check.
Delicious food, friendly staff, quick service, but not huge portion. Would recommend! I tried the Crusted Lemongrass Salmon, being in Santa Barbara for only a few days and wanting to try the ‘local favorite.’ It was delicious, with a variety of complimentary flavors, and made me want to come back again. One downside I saw was fairly small portion at least for this dish (although perhaps simply because i was very hungry lol).
The cocktails were great and the bartenders were friendly and helpful. Our server was non-attentive, never filled our water, and we had to ask several times before getting our check. The salmon, calamari, crab cake and seared ahi were terrific. The portions for the apps are very small and not large enough to share. The mushroom risotto is not very mushroom-y and the whole walnuts are not good in it.
The food was above average but lacked real balance overall, which kept it from being 5 stars for me. It reminded me of a wine that looks good and smells good and then, just lacks oomph. We dined outdoors because of COVID concerns, and it was cold. They had some heaters but some ran out of propane while we were dining, and due to miscommunication of the staff, no one came to take our order or even to make contact for at least 10 minutes. We had to flag down a waiter who wasn’t our server in order to get noticed despite checking in for our reservation. The food also seemed a bit dated, like what might have been “high style” or haute cuisine in terms of the layers, garnishes, oils and sauces in the plate, but the food ultimately failed to be anything but above average for me.
A little pricey, but great for work meets. It's fancy, but also gives a very chill vibe, which I love. The food quality is amazing, and the homemade bread is really delicious. It's in a great location, not far from the beach. Although when I came in, I hadn't realized it was so "classy", so I felt a bit under dressed. Overall, I would definitely recommend it again, probably for a date or something business-related.
Super cute restaurant, great location, and a high level of service. Definitely worth going to. We had the paella, crab cakes, roasted beet and grilled pears salad, and the French fried portabellos. The “Water For Chocolate” dessert was to die for. Great location and atmosphere- perfect date spot!
Good yet not great. I feel like this one restaurant is trying to have a great variety of dishes and doing so makes the quality of everything not that great. So you order meat, and it good, just not great. Also a bit stuffy for my taste. Not enough room between tables, you just feel stuffy.
A solid 4 stars but no better. Great service! Perfect for your visiting relatives or tourists with unrefined taste. Almost delicious. Meat and veggies properly prepared, but every sauce had way too much sugar. The mixed greens salad was over dressed and oily and bland. Blech. It needed arugula so bad, we all agreed. Bread was yummy and free. That was nice, and helped it be a 4 not a 3 star for the food. Prices fair for the location. Again, Great service! I'd take Grandma there anytime, but never again for me.
The shrimp appetizer with phylo dough was delicious. The beet salad was great. The mushroom risotto was very tasty, although the rice was a tad undercooked. The tiramisu was not good. The ladyfingers portion was too dry, the filling just didn't taste right to me, and there was too much cocoa on top. I like a moist tiramisu that melts in your mouth and this tasted more like cake. The server said "that's how we make it". She had the manager take it off my bill, so that was good for me. Service was excellent.
Opal was a great experience. We had a reservation and were sat immediately. The atmosphere was nice. Although, I don’t usually like sitting by the window, there were many people walking their dogs, it made up for it lol Our server was very friendly and attentive the whole time. The wait wasn’t long for our drinks and food. The cocktails we ordered were really good. For an appetizer we ordered the phyllo wrapped prongs and they were so good. The phyllo dough added a little sweetness to the prongs and they weren’t over cooked. The sauce was delicious. I ordered the basil fettuccine and shrimp. The shrimp was good, the pasta tasted fresh, and the sauce was creamy. I though the flavors were cohesive and worked well together. My partner ordered the angel hair pasta w beef tips and enjoyed it. Our visit was on a short trip to SB and if i was in the area again, I def eat here again.
I loved this place, I went with some friends, but it would be perfect for a little romantic date night. The service was excellent, the dishes were reasonably priced, the venue is small and quaint. For an appetizer we order the prawns wrapped in phyllo and they were excellent; the sauce that was on them was so delicious and perfectly paired with the cabbage and oranges. I ordered the chicken Marsala, it was tasty but a bit dry. My friend ordered the curried salmon, I wish had ordered that instead.
New Year's Day 2023. Super cold night. I loved all the pretty lights from the tree and the starlights on State Street. Opal is a restaurant I have always wanted to try but had always thought it was out of my price range. Saved a little and was able to partake. My friend ate all "Starters" and drinks. I had a personal pizza, a drink, and dessert. The staff was friendly and went beyond. In a world that seems to have forgotten what Customer Service is, Opal has not. Opal is on State Street by the Arlington Theatre. Give it a try. It's awesome!
Wow! It's been awhile since I've been impressed. The service is good but could be faster. I had prawns with a coconut sauce that is above the rest. Wife and mother in law had the seared ahi and that was amazing. Brother in law had a salad pizza (he went big at a fancy restraunt) that I really could not beleive how good it was. Nephew got the ribeye and that was very good. This is a place that everybody should try. I'll be back later with an edit since my other nephew is still tasting food. Oh by the way sister in law Lisa said tacos were a little mayonnaisey.
I wouldn't come again. The food was quite underwhelming although the service and atmosphere were good. Some of the dishes, such as the risotto, were decent, but all around, the food was subpar. You know it's bad when the steak wasn't seasoned properly and salt was requested. As table of 7, we all had ratings of 4.5 to 6 out of 10.
The look of the restaurant is warm and inviting, especially the patio area. (They have heaters!) Service was top notch. The food, however, was severely lacking. Pasta overcooked to mush, pizza crust hard, everything over salted. I expected way more for the price. The wine selection is decent, though.
The bread and its dips were the most consistently delicious thing on the table 😅 maybe I just got unlucky with these particular two dishes: wild mushroom risotto and their signature paella. The risotto was noticeably undercooked and chalky - the creamy consistency was not developed. It was seasoned nicely and the aroma of wild mushrooms and herbs did come through - so it still tasted good, but the texture was way off. The seafood in the paella didn't taste fresh and some of the mussels were just... empty. the plate was almost too watery and the overall flavor was bland, yet, when I got one chorizo piece in my bite it just punched me out of nowhere with its spiciness and saltiness. The chicken bits were super dry; the plate would be better without it. I trust that all the good reviews are true; just maybe don't order these two 😅😅
Was in town for a few days and read that locals love Opal, but the whole time I couldn’t figure out why. Mocktail of the day was unfortunately an absolute scam. Lime juice and ice at best for $12. $15 caesar salad was about as good as one from a grocery store. Lettuce was incredibly cold and it became evident throughout the night that most of the garnish items are being stored too cold. For our mains, my partner and I ordered the salmon and sea bass ($35 and $45 respectively), and both were confusing dishes overall. Cook on everything was immaculate but somehow each dish had so much going on and yet was simultaneously bland. Kudos to the chefs for trying something creative, but unfortunately it was a miss on both. As mentioned, the garnishes are ice cold and sitting on top of a piping hot fish which created an unpleasant eating experience. Didn’t have the heart to tell the kind staff the food was subpar nor would ever send back food, but hopefully the owner will take this into consideration. Unfortunately I would not recommend this place because of their egregious prices for mediocre food. It was an unfortunate way to end our trip in SB and sadly the worst of the restaurants we ate at, but would give it another chance if they get their food fixed.
Atmosphere wasn't the greatest, but it was pretty good. We got a salad that was really good, the dressing was great and the veggie choice was simple but prepared well. The service was nice too - we got an undercooked shrimp pizza, and then they replaced it with another undercooked shrimp pizza, BUT they gave us a single free Creme Brule to share amongst the two of us. That was also undercooked, though. Overall, the food sucked, the waitresses/waiters were nice, and the atmosphere was good. There's a lot of good places around this one, I'd probably go there.
It hurts to leave a bad review of a local business, but YIKES. Olive Garden quality at a mid tier price, don’t be fooled by the pleasant ambiance. We came here because of the reviews even after hearing very mixed things about it from friends, and it was one of the only spots were haven't tried in the area so we figured we'd give it a shot. The wide range of foods offered on the menu drew me in, and man, I can tell you they do NOT do ethnic flavors well. Everything was incredibly bland and soggy. The cheap bread and whipped margarine should have been a dead giveaway in the beginning. The value compared to the food quality itself was severely lacking and the dishes we got just had no flavor whatsoever - how do you mess up pasta and have it turn out so limp?! Service was not good either - our server was somewhat attentive and then abandoned us for 30 minutes when we needed an extra fork, so one of us couldn't even start eating until the food was cold. While we love 95% of the restaurants in Santa Barbara, Opal is absolutely not one of the ones we will return to.
FISH WAS TINY AN TASTELESS, like frozen does to fish. the string beans were left with end stems an the mash potatoes an truflles?, truffles, a tinsy dot was on top with butter an tastes like salt. mash potatoes were so whipped as though they used a potatoe to make 6 uses. seriously it was bad. the mojitos were made incorrect. The waiter was very nice but not a good server. never again.
I recently visited this restaurant, and unfortunately, it was a very disappointing experience. The quality of the food was poor — the meat was tough and overcooked. Even worse was the service. The waitstaff were inattentive and took a long time just to take our order. When we asked questions, they responded with a rude and irritated attitude, which made the experience even more unpleasant. The environment wasn’t great either — the tables were not clean, and there was an unpleasant smell inside the restaurant. Because of the poor food quality and unprofessional service, I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. Management seriously needs to take action and improve.
