The service from the owner, an elderly woman, is excellent: very friendly, attentive, and with a manner that makes you feel welcome from the first moment. The place is clean and pleasant. However, they don't have a visible menu where you can check prices, which creates some uncertainty when ordering. The woman verbally lists the available dishes, but without specifying the cost. We were two people: we ordered a cheese quesadilla each, two coffees, an order of enchiladas (which only include lettuce, cheese, and sour cream), and an order of stuffed chicken breast with chipotle sauce and tortillas. The total bill was $430, which seemed high to me considering that the food, while delicious, doesn't offer anything extraordinary to justify the price. In a budget kitchen, you can eat something similar for around $150 to $200, including a drink or coffee for two. Another detail that could be improved was the women's restroom, which had puddles of water on the floor. In short, El Sabor de Hidalgo offers good service and cleanliness, but the prices are excessive for the type of food and service provided.

It's been a little over a couple of years since I last went. Total disappointment. I went with my little girl and ordered mushroom broth, but not before asking if it was spicy, to which they replied no. It wasn't spicy, just what followed. When I told the ladies, they only made fun of us. We only ate the mushrooms and left all the broth on our plates. They don't have a menu and they don't even have prices. For 1 pitcher of water + 2 mushroom broths + 1 breaded chicken breast, they charged $470 pesos. Honestly, you'd be better off going to Madero or other places where the prices are similar but the places are more comfortable and they offer better service and attention. I didn't feel like going back. I don't recommend it. There are many better options. Added to that, the food isn't even representative of the state of Hidalgo.

Another reviewer already posted complained about the prices. Let's start there, because it's the most questionable detail. They don't have a menu that shows you the prices before you order the food. While I agree the portions are generous, it's still a set meal; therefore, prices are expected to be affordable. In my particular case, for creamy chicken, breaded chicken breast, and a chile relleno, with their respective water, I got a bill of almost 600 pesos. I know they're going to come up with all this "homemade food," "traditional flavor," and other arguments that don't justify the diner not knowing the price beforehand and making assumptions based on other experiences. That's why, in my opinion, I consider the price to be beyond the reality offered. Let's move on to the food: delicious, yes, but nothing out of the ordinary. When you read "Sabor de Hidalgo," you expect something more than the dishes you can find anywhere else. On their menu (or at least what they offered us) there was no cecina con enchiladas, a Huasteco dish, ribs, or classic snacks from Hidalgo cuisine. I don't think they live up to the restaurant's name. The service might be the most redeeming aspect: the person who served us was friendly, although a little distracted; the food was served quickly; and the bill arrived perhaps a little slowly, and they had to confirm what we had ordered. Honestly, there's a lot of room for improvement; and we definitely won't be returning. The place has its charms, except for the "Taste of Hidalgo."

The food isn't too bad, but they're outrageously expensive. The problem is they don't display prices, they don't have menus, and you assume that since it's a small, informal restaurant, the prices will be reasonable. When they bring the bill, you ask to see it, and the waitress goes to the kitchen, takes forever, and comes back with a different notebook, having adjusted the prices to justify what they're charging. Each piece of bread (which, by the way, is from La Esperanza) is 40 pesos, and three cups of Mexican-style coffee cost 105 pesos, and so on, with countless inconsistencies. They really should regulate these kinds of businesses. In short, we would never go back, and of course, I would never recommend it.
