Have never met an Avila’s that I didn’t love; today was no exception! Set along a quaint thoroughfare, with free angled street parking. It has a small footprint and they utilize every inch of it; so much charm, family/community history. Lauren J was the epitome of this brand; I was welcomed and treated like family. Adore their homemade salsa, chunky with fresh yumminess and a nice bite. The Grande Taco Salad with grilled chicken and a side of fajita veggies was delicious, huge - you get your money’s worth! This is a home run with filling, super delicious, affordable Mexican food in a fun location.
Love. Attentive service with our large group, great filling fish and carnitas and asada tacos. Great prices for happy hour. Fun old town location.
I love this location. The restaurant is beautiful. The food is delicious. I'm a huge fan of albondigas soup. It was perfect. They didn't skimp on the meatballs. I love the chips and salsa. Everyone at my table was really happy with their food and drinks. My only suggestion is that the servers could be a tiny bit more friendly. I know that it's very busy and so they want to get people out but when you go out to eat you also want to enjoy your time and not feel like you're so rushed to leave. I still highly recommend it.
Yummy traditional Mexican food at Avila's El Ranchito on Seal Beach's Main Street! The chips and salsa were fresh and tasty and bought us some time to look over the menu! I ordered the fresh guacamole and chips to start and then chicken fajitas for the entree! Both were so good I would come back anytime! The beach and good Mexican food go hand in hand!! Def worth stopping in!
The food was very delicious. The meat was very soft, perfectly cooked. The shrimp were the bomb, big and lots of flavor. Two delicious plates a water and a coke for less than $55 including chips and salsa.
What a fantastic quaint Mexican restaurant. We were greeted and seated immediately. The staff is warm, caring and friendly. I had the Cadillac margarita and a chimichanga that was amazing. The pricing is more then fair ND I cannot recommend enough this wonderful place to stop for a pleasant meal.
They have indoor and outdoor seating. Heaters outside. Fast friendly service. They don't skimp on food for sure. The salsa was fresh and chunky. The refried beans were homemade and creamy. The prices were 15-20 a plate. Great location.
Came in for the first time and I can say that I will be back! As I continue my search for the best potato tacos in SoCal, I can say that the ones here are fantastic! My meal included a watermelon margarita that was divine and tacos were fabulous. Good service. Good prices. Great food! Several plant-based options if that’s your thing. Try it!
We stopped in here during our long layover to get back home to Las Vegas. The staff was super friendly and didn’t mind us hauling our luggage in while we ate. Everything we had was delicious! The chips and salsa were so good. I had a cheese enchilada and my husband had a chimichanga, we both agreed it was a 10 out of 10. We don’t have great Mexican food in Las Vegas so whenever we are in California we always look for a great Mexican restaurant, this place did not disappoint. We will come back next time we are in this area.
My family and I have been coming here for years and to all the other Avila's El Ranchito restaurants out there in LA since we are a long time Chicano family. Yes vatos locos you heard right this review is from an actual real Chicano family so yes it's actually good 🗣
A casual but elegant seafood focused restaurant in the heart of charming old town Seal Beach. On our most recent visit, Lisa was our server and she was extremely helpful and attentive to our party. Everyone at our table loved their food. The atmosphere is comfortable and very suitable for pleasant conversations at your table. Currently, they also open an upstairs dining room on the weekends. Highly recommend for a nice meal.
We celebrated our friends 91st birthday and it was amazing. Our waitress Carly was the best in serving us our delicious meal of albacore sandwich melts, clam chowder, scallop and shrimp fettuccine and Peruvian ceviche. The vanilla crème brûlée was a delicious end to our lunch celebration 🎉
First time back since Walt's reopened. Has lunch today. Service and atmosphere were excellent. Sat at the bar and was served promptly and graciously by the bartender, Tawny. Ordered the fish and chips and a glass of Pinot Gris. Wine was excellent. Fish and chips were very good but fish really needed some additional seasoning. It was nice and fresh but need more flavor. The fries were excellent. Just the right crispness. I'm not a big catsup fan but theirs was very good! Glad they are back. It is a long drive from San Pedro but I will be returning as often as possible. Remember: After your meal, save time for a walk down Main Street to the beach and pier!
There are a few restaurants where being there is part of the pleasure. Walt’s has a vibe however silly that may read. Friendly. Inviting. Comfortsble. Welcoming staff. Then you get to the service and food. To me this is a very special place. Food is excellent. Timing is excellent. Staff is quality. Prices are not cheap. You pay some. But the experience is very positive. Wines and beers are diverse. Just one of those places you look forward to coming back and feel warm smiles about.
All I can say is bravo Walts Wharf!! What a come back! I grew up in the area and have been going since I was a kid. Went with my family last week and it was even better than I remembered. Clam chowder was fantastic, some of the best I've ever had (and I live on the east cost now!). Everyone in my family ordered something different and each entree was super tasty. I definitely plan on going back the next time I'm in town. And special shoutout to our waitress - my grandma is super hard of hearing, and she was very patient and kind with my grandma, making the whole experience much easier for her. So thanks Walt's Wharf for an amazing evening and delicious food!
Delicious food from the moment you entered the restaurant, you get welcome super friendly ladies and the waitress was amazing. I had this salmon and it was just delicious. The drinks atmosphere waitress and service. It’s top notch. I will come back here again the best of my family. I love it all around excellent place and the food is tasty 100% recommend this to everyone.
It was nice to see Walt's Wharf open for business again. We enjoyed some great food (Trout Amandine, Shrimp Scampi, Ono and Scallops). The cocktails were nicely crafted (watermelon margaritas, jalapeño margaritas, Moscow mules and old fashions). Service was timely, even though busy and our server was pleasant and helpful with suggestions. Welcome back Walt's Wharf! Give them a visit - I'm sure you'll enjoy.
After having been closed following a heartbreaking fire that destroyed this longtime cornerstone restaurant on Main St. in Seal Beach (since back when I was a kid, more than 50 years ago!), it was SO nice to see it back up and running again, while visiting my old hometown area. And the service and food did NOT disappoint... just as good as it always was. Friendly wait staff, excellent, quality, tasty food, and a really cool "open" kitchen design that allows you to walk right up and peer in the glass kitchen walls to see what's goin' on in there. Walt's clam chowder is an institution. Medium thick, amazing clam flavor, and the clams - HUGE, fresh, chewy clams, and LOTS of 'em! So good, especially when paired with the complimentary mini sourdough rolls! The shrimp/scallops (bay, smaller type, but still very tasty) was excellent, with a very rich, very garlicky parmesan cream sauce. SO very good, served piping hot and full of flavor! (Ok, full disclosure, the portions are HUGE... I "might" have forgotten to take a pic before I dug in because it looked SO good... so please imagine a portion about 20% MORE than the large amount of pasta already pictured here ;) . Prices are not by any means "value" or cheap here, but the food quality is worth it! Highly recommend supporting this Seal Beach institution again, now that they're back in full swing for about the past month. Welcome back Walt's!!
Had lunch at the reopened Walt's Wharf. Beautifully refurbished. Had an easy time getting a table at lunch on a Friday. The staff is so nice. Our waitress, Katie was excellent. We had the albacore melt and the grilled Mahi Mahi sandwich. Both were very good. The Mahi Mahi was fresh. I wanted to try the chowder to see if it was the same. I will go back because my meal was filling.
It's been over a decade since my last visit and I knew that I would one day be back. A long history of excellent seafood and wine makes this restaurant a keeper. It was so clean it sparkles! Turns out, it's been closed for 18 months due to a fire so it's all new but with the same vibe as before. The chowder is fantastic as I remembered. The Mahi Mahi sandwich outstanding as well as the fish and chips. We stopped on our way home to San Diego from LA. I want to go back for dinner for a real treat.
The newly restored & beautifully remodeled Walt's Wharf reopened in Seal Beach this week! Our waitress, Jennifer, was outstanding! She was friendly, and in tune with every need we had. Compliments to the chef for the famous grilled artichoke a & delicious lunch. Thank you to the Babcock family for your efforts and commitment to Walt's Wharf and this community.
Amazing fish and seafood on the beach. Cozy vibes inside and good service. The food is very fresh and tastes delicious. Definitely worth the price. Loved the artichoke and ahi tuna. Good gluten free options, not many vegetarian options. Must go to if you're in seal beach. Went again recently and so good. Love sitting in the window, having bread and a cocktail, then ordering dinner. High quality fish and fresh food.
One of the things that I cannot overestimate is how good the service was. I ordered a whiskey that the bartender did not know wasn't on the menu twice lol however they did compensate by giving me Their highest top shelf whiskey at a regular price it was a very nice gesture. I got the oysters on a 1/2 shell, they were very fresh and very tasty.. The halibut was very good a very nice portion next time I return I am definitely going to have to get the blackened catfish
What went well??? LISA, our server, was absolute gem!! The food here is always amazing but she made our experience even better!

This popular Seal Beach seafood restaurant was closed for some time after a fire, but it's back now. I didn't think would need a reservation on a Monday night, but we did indeed have to wait. It's …
We had lunch here for my Dad's birthday. My Mom had made a reservation and we had a long table set up for us. It was a big party of about 11 people. Our waitress was really nice and accommodating. …
Prices are good, location is okay, people are nice and accommodating. Parked in a nearby public parking (3$), not too busy around 5pm. The food arrived straight away, it was good. The food is a little on the bland side, there’s no overwhelming taste and there weren’t any sauces on the table. I had to ask for some hot sauce to add more flavor to give it some heat. This isn’t typical of me to ask for extra hot sauce! I think I would pass on it moving forward.
Invited my Aunt to brunch, I got there 15 minutes early and was turned away. So we walked around a bit and I came back to wait outside. Some other group came by with 5 minutes left to open and the staff let them in. Whatever, maybe they are friends. But that other group receieved drinks and had appetizers out before we even get asked what we want to drink? Pretty silly to me. The other group had left by the time our food comes out, I was very happy with my choice (shrimp) but the waiter never came back to check if we needed refills or anything else until it was clear we were done eating. Maybe I just got a rude waiter. I'd go again to double-check.
Fantastic location right on Main Street. Good selection. It's hard to beat the two tacos and soup. Fast service even though we don't mind waiting from our table just off the sidewalk, enjoying chips 'n salsa under a flaming heat lamp.
Food was ok, but lunch for 2 with decent tip hit $120, and we didn't even have drinks. The clam chowder was a little runny for my taste. The 2 crab cakes were small and flavorless, and $28. Won't be ordering that again. The molten Chocolate Bomb dessert was the best thing we had, followed by the free bread.
Great place to take your date for dinner and or go for lunch and just have good food. This place just reopened in 09/2025. Their menu got a bit smaller. The food is good but used to be better. I do have to say that their pot of class is pretty darn tasty. Yhe fish and chips is a must. The fish seemed very fresh and was well seasoned. The steak was okay (expected more UMPH since they actually have an open flame grill) and their cooks need to do a better job on getting the right steak temperature. This place has a variety of wine and full bar to get any drink that you want. The bar scene is great. The atmosphere is nice on both floors. I do wish that they would bring back their grilled banana split... Parking is tiny and street parking can get busy. Staff is friendly. Prices are high for what you get. The restaurant is housed in downtown seal beach which gives you an opportunity to walk, shop and hit the beach 2 blocks away.
Reservation was not required for lunch. We were seated promptly, and we ordered the clam chowder, it was good! I had the almadine trout, it was okay. My friend ordered the fish and chips which was good. For dessert, we ordered their cookies & cream, not my favorite. Service was very fast as we had barely finished the clam chowder before our main course arrived. Overall good food and service!
I had been wanting to try this place. Went for the first time, Sunday afternoon, there were many empty tables so I couldn't really fall on "well, they were busy" as reason for the poor service. Also the food wasn't good, even accounting for the good location and what their exorbitant operating costs must be. Not here to post angrily, just really a mediocre at best experience for the price. I ordered a margarita and it came out after my entree arrived and was wrong, even after the server and I confirmed what margaritas were blended and which weren't. He tried to get me to keep it and I had to refuse three times. Then he asked if I wanted my drink as I'd ordered but I had already gotten my food (that was also mediocre) and just wanted to leave. I ended up just asking for a coke which came late and was a glass full of ice with little soda. The server knew he messed up so didn't come check if I needed anything for a long time so I only had a little soda after the drink mistake and was still charged for the soda. I ordered the chili Verde. The plate was $23 and the chili Verde had okay but pretty salty flavor. The texture and appearance was 4/10. I wouldn't have ever again. Rice was not good. Beans were fine. I wouldn't go here ever again.
Nice Mexican restaurant in the heart of Seal Beach. My steaming heap of fajitas were delicious, if somewhat under seasoned. Sitting in their outdoor seating area gave us a nice vantage point to people watch.
We stopped in here to give this place a try, as we eat a lot of mexican food places. The place is small and quaint. However, clean and welcoming. After being seated, we were given chips and salsa right away. Thankfully because wasn't waited on til our chips and salsa were almost gone. Salsa had a great flavor with just the right amount of spice. The chips were freshly made and crispy. I got the Azteca burrito with Chile verde. The burrito had great flavor great size, would order again. It came with sour cream and guacamole, on the side topped with a green sauce and cheese. My husband got the chile Colorado. He would not recommend this plate. Not a great flavor was more like a beef mole. The smoky paloma was the worst tasting paloma, we have ever had. The chili mango margarita add a great flavor however, mostly ice and mixer was no alcohol to be found in both drinks would not recommend buying especially at $12 & $13. Overall tried wouldn't come back.

Stopped in at the bar for about an hour to have a beer and appetizer. The waiter immediately brought me chips and salsa. Ordered a quesadilla but it was kind of bland. The salsa tasted like the sauce was from out of a can. The bartender was attentive but not very friendly she didn't even tell me goodbye when I left. Best part was probably the Negro modelos I ordered!
Not the same, been declining for many years. But I was hoping after the remodel they would improve. Unfortunately, it’s worse. Shrimp cocktail chewy Steamed clams rubbery Grilled artichoke wet and soggy. I will not go back. Has not been good for over 10 years now.
We went to Walt’s for lunch today. It was the first time back for us since Walt’s reopened. We were very disappointed with the quality of the food. I ordered a Caesar salad and the lettuce was not romaine, nor was it fresh. It was wilted iceberg lettuce and brown around the edges. The salad did not have Parmesan cheese and croutons were tiny and stale. The Caesar dressing was not creamy but really watery and tasted like an acidic vinaigrette with a citrus base. I also asked for coffee and it was cold and tasted like yesterday’s coffee microwaved and really bitter. The waitress was kind enough to bring me another cup that was fresh. The clam chowder was good, but paying $17.00 for a bunch of brownish wilting iceberg lettuce is not ok for you to be charging your customers. Quality was much better before you closed down.
Took me a few weeks to write this since my family and I absolutely LOVED Walt's Wharf. Grew up in the bar area going there every Friday night for 'Peel & eat shrimp' night and, of course, the artichoke. It was our favorite place and my siblings and I were devastated when it closed and then the more recent fire. When we saw it reopened it was an immediate group text to get down there for a family dinner to create those memories with our kids. Renovation looks fantastic, but I cannot begin to explain the utter disappointment at how INCREDIBLY rude the staff were. The hostess went as far as to tell us to "leave our kids home next time" so that we could be sat in the bar. The service was poor - it took 15+ minutes and several reminders to get the beer that was ordered only to find out the keg was out - our order came out wrong, and the entire experience was very disappointing. Our poor experience was then shared with the Manager on duty who brushed it off without a care. Mind you, this was @ 3:30/4 pm and not during the dinner rush. Giving an extra star because I cherish my childhood memories, but sad for my kid(s) and nephews who won't have the Friday night Walt's experience that my siblings and I had. Local friends even warned us of their similar negative experiences. Hopefully, things get better.

This was my first time eating at this location. What a waste!!! What u ordered was real Mexican food. On top of that and bad service. The host purposely charged someone else's meal on my debit card? Over $100. And , yes I tipped.. the host thaf day was terrible, I even called back over the phone and he yelled at me and hung up and Hispanic guy.. food looks good from the photo 📸. Trust me, the beans taste out of the can and the rice was cold, tortillas were super hard and the salsa tasted like pace pacantè (the chips were even stale. Maybe the guy jist didnt like my face ro treat me the way he did.. he ignored me when I walked in (mind you it was empty) may two tables taken. I just grabbed a menu and sat myself. The host looked very upset . When other came in he greeted them with a smile, offering the world
My wife and I ordered online, GrubHub delivery. I ordered Tacos and Caldo, which was described as two crispy tacos and a cup of Avila’s soup. I received two wet and soggy taquitos, (not tacos) and cold tasteless cup of chicken soup. My wife ordered a shredded beef tostada and it was soggy, floating in water and cold. Our meals were terrible! GrubHub delivered our dinner in a short time, less than 30 minutes from time of placing the order. We only live about 5 miles from Avila’s El Ranchito on Main St. Seal Beach. We will never go to or order again from Avila’s El Ranchito Seal Beach.
If you like subpar Mexican food covered in cheese and watered down drinks this is your place. Salsa was no better than Pace with gigantic chunks of pepper and onion. The Camarones a la Diabla were anything but Diabla. The sauce was sour and in no way appetizing. The shrimp were lazily peeled with most in the shell still intact. The drinks were watered down. However the service was good
