Opinions de Hungry Hunt Shaver Lake
Food was excellent with large portions. Price was ok - a little high but it's a seasonal, tourist area, and prices are up. Outside eating area is very nice. Given it's location and lots of reviews with very high ratings It is usually busy so food may take a little bit; but, well worth the wait. Highly recommended.
I love the shakes here they are really good and I love the service. It is worth the wait. Paula is very polite and helpful.
I'm from Fresno, and I gotta say I'd make the drive to Hungry Hut for some burgers any time. Their employees are super friendly and efficient. Usually I don't have to wait for more than 10-15 minutes for my food and its always fresh and tasty! Just a side note, their kids meal burger is a great portion even for an adult, that's what I get every time! Awesome place, awesome food!
Love the food here and the new owner is awesome. I showed up at 8:15pm on a Thursday to buy a milkshake. The owner politely told me they close at 8pm, then asked what I was there for. I told them I came for shake but I could get one next time. The owner then had someone on his team make me a shake (amazing) then tried to give it to me for free (wow). Owner treated everyone with kindness and respect. I highly recommend this place.
Simply phenomenal food. Wait was a while, but more than worth it. I love onion rings and always try them wherever I go and I can say theirs are the best. Burgers were juicy third pound goodness. I had no room for a milkshake, but their flavors sounded so tasty.
Love this place! We arrived after closing and they still let us come in and made milkshakes for our whole family! Great service and great milkshakes!
Even with a long line in front of us and the Hungry Hut's need for new employees (they had a help wanted sign in the window), the employees who were there were very helpful and courteous. The food is always excellent... burgers, cheeseburgers, garden burgers, french fries, and onion rings... And even with the crowd, we were able to get a table. The Hungry Hit is a time honored tradition when we're up in Shaver Lake and we hope that continues for generations to come.
Great little place to eat for lunch. The portions are big, food is fresh and everything was delicious!
Best shakes. Not best shakes in Shaver Lake- just best shakes anywhere. Must stop here when in Shaver Lake!
EVERYTHING IS SO GOOD!!!! You will not be disappointed! Get.👏The.👏Milkshake.👏🥤🤤
We arrived 6/4 2022 and tried their chocolate shake and oreo shakes, absolutely fantastic! We also ordered just some side orders of fries and onion rings, both were excellent and hot. As I'm writing this at 9:13a.m I'm waiting for it to be 11am so we can head back and try out their Burgers which look DELICIOUS 😋
My sisters and I stopped here last Sunday for lunch and it was awesome! We have been stopping by Hungry Hut since we were kids and this trip was no different. Excellent service, fantastic food, great atmosphere- highly recommend! It’s a small place but they have done a lot with the space they have.
Ate lunch here today for the first time in a decade and was pleasantly surprised with how improved the food & atmosphere is with the new ownership. The shakes were reminiscent of old ice cream shops: my mixed berry gramma shake was deliciously thick & creamy-a truly delightful dairy dessert. While I absolutely will be returning for more milk shakes, it’s the burgers & onion rings, that are the stars of the show. These burgers are thick, juicy and oh so flavorful. They were so good it made me regret my decades old gastric bypass because my heart and mouth wanted “just two more bites.” The bar & surrounding outdoor eating area have an “instagramable” atmosphere to it. It had most every offering that bigger restaurants have. Its laid back vibe felt like a Hawaiian tiki bar, swapping out palm trees for Shaver’s giant evergreen trees. If I weren’t driving later, I absolutely would have sampled some of the drinks that I saw on the menu. The blended drinks looked especially delicious! Fortunately, a berry shake filled the void. While I wasn’t a bar patron, I did get to talk to the owner manning the bar when he stepped out to help my disabled mom park her giant camper van*. As we exchanged pleasantries as my mom navigated their compact and PACKED parking lot**, I got the impression that the owner/bartender has the sort of kindness and good that we need in the world. Since he took over 5 years ago, it’s clear that he’s poured his heart and soul into creating a space that everyone can come to relax & eat. *Mr owner sir-if you’re reading this, thank you for stepping out & helping my very frazzled mom park. Your calm demeanor and helpful suggestions diffused a very stressful moment. My mom has only used her boat of a camper van a handful of times and your suggestions on where she could safely park helped to counterbalance the harsh words of the people who didn’t care that my mom was really trying her best to get out of everyone’s way. She is disabled & newly widowed. It takes everything she has to gradually rejoin society. Trying to parallel park the 24’ van in cramped quarters with rude people yelling at her was our nightmare. Your calm words and helpful directions helped to quiet the anxious doubt. You soothed her nerves gave her the confidence to deftly park her vehicle. **parking is at a premium alongside Shaver’s busy stretch of highway, with large areas blocked off for cabin rentals (especially on the weekends). It’s out of Hungry Hut’s control and with patience an empty spot will open up eventually
The Hungry Hut - Shaver Lake, CA 🍔🥤 If you're in Shaver Lake, The Hungry Hut is an absolute must-visit! Under new ownership for a few years now, this burger joint has quickly become our family’s favorite spot every time we come to town. The burgers here are nothing short of amazing! Each bite is packed with flavor, and you can really tell they use quality ingredients. From classic cheeseburgers to unique creations, there’s something for everyone. And let’s not forget their incredible shakes! They offer a variety of flavors that are creamy, thick, and downright delicious—perfect for pairing with your meal or enjoying on their own. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, making you feel right at home. The staff is incredibly friendly and always goes the extra mile to ensure you have a great experience. Plus, it’s cozy enough to kick back and relax after a day of exploring the beautiful surroundings. In short, whether you're in the mood for a juicy burger or a refreshing shake, The Hungry Hut is the place to go! We can’t recommend it enough and can’t wait for our next visit!
We had a party of 19 show up at 12:30 on Saturday. They were very busy as usual. They took our individual orders and got them all to come together at the same time. The orders were loaded in a box and we took them off site to eat. We did not take the time to check the orders while at the Hut, gambling on if they were correct. To our pleasant surprise, they were even the correct amount of ranch dressings. Food was great! Thank you! You guys are the best!
I've been coming here on and off for the last 30 years but hadn't stopped by in a while. Not since the previous owners (or maybe the ones before) but I can easily say that this is objectively the best it's ever been. I got the Double American burger just as it comes and it was fantastic. High quality beef, properly cooked and well seasoned. The veggies on the burger were fresh and perfectly ripe and the bun tasted just as good as it looked. The onion rings were great too. Next time I'll have to try one of the shakes.
Under new management, maybe a few times sense, I remember it in the mid 90's. But the memories and taste is still there after all this time. There seems to be new teck and a change of the building. But I think that's so they can serve all there customer's.
Awesome Cheeseburger. Can't wait for our next vacation to Shaver Lake, so I can eat at the Hungry Hut 😋
Enjoyed my hamburger with the combo of fries and onion rings and a beer. Everything was delicious and they even offered a water bowl for my dog. This was nice after another place in town told me no one was cool with dogs hanging out on the patios and I'd had to leave my dog in the car while I ordered food making me anxious for him. Bonus points for a very clean nice smelling bathroom.
Get the grandma shake , it’s best shake you’ll ever have
What a find! The burgers were delicious. Fries were seasoned with a special blend of salt and spices and were quite tasty. BUT the CHOCOLATE SHAKE was the bomb. Great flavor, super thick, and a good size for the price. Mom had the chicken sandwich and loved it. Really enjoyed sitting on the patio, plenty of shade. Will stop again next time we are in the area.
Such a great spot, would definitely return! Nancy helped serve us & she was the absolute BEST, made us feel right at home :)
I had the best burger I've had in a long time here. Their serving of fries is huge and can definitely be shared by two people. There is plenty of outdoor seating to enjoy the mountains while you eat.
O my lord this place has the best tasting juices and most flavor in burger yet . I'm from Louisiana and I know good food and cool people and great atmosphere. Check them out for real
I stopped by The Hungry Hut last weekend, and it definitely delivered on flavor and vibe. It’s a small, locally owned burger spot in Shaver Lake. The staff was friendly, patient, and happy to make recommendations. I got my food within 10 minutes, even during the lunch rush. Don't walk, RUN!!!!
The best burgers, shakes and the best ambience love this place. Anytime I’m in shaver this is religiously my spot to go to. All the staff are great and the owner S/o to Neil great person too. I love the hungry hut 🛖
Whenever we do work in Shaver Lake we love to stop by the hungry hut! Our favorite is the chicken sandwich. Never disappoints. Today was great again! Called in the order, they had it ready right as I arrived, and everything was hot and fresh and delicious! I believe our server was Mo. Thanks Hungry Hut!
I’ve frequented Hungry Hut for several years and have never left disappointed or hungry. Whether grabbing a bite on the way down the mountain or making a trip up just for the Hut Burger and fries, I can’t recommend it enough! Customer service has always been phenomenal. They even give my pup a bowl of water.
hubby and i stopped on our way to the lake for breakfast and had a delightful experience! the staff and cook were so incredibly friendly and the breakfast burritos were HUGE and delicious at a great price! def plan on coming back for lunch and drinks :)
Best food in shaver. Grew up stopping at this place to eat when I was in high school (2000) on my way home from China Peak (known then as Sierra Summit). This place has come a long way. Their Hut burger is awesome and their shakes are amazing. My kids loved the shakes (got the Oreo shake). If you’re up there, stop in and grab some food.
Ran up the hill today to toss in a hook and enjoy the warmth in the midst of the snow covered ground. We stopped at one of our favorites to snag a burger and fries before heading to the lake. The patty is meaty with a good char to give it some tooth. The bun complimented the patty and fixings with a nice bounce. It was not dry. The house sauce (maybe thousand island?) and light lettuce made each bite a perfect bite. You wont wear the fixings and it wont run down your arms as you eat it. Just a good, well-balanced burger. On the way back we stopped for some shakes before heading down via a scenic route. My love got a strawberry and I got one mixed coffee and butterfinger. They provide wide straws which help with enjoying the shake more and less fighting a stuck chunk of strawberry. Creamy, cold, and flavorful. A great treat to sip on while driving through the curvy roads and soaking in the beautiful green hills, creeks, and (of course) cows!
My family and I visited the Hungry Hut during our weekend getaway to Shaver Lake, and WOW, the burgers are seriously next level — juicy, fresh, and grilled to perfection. The fries? Crispy golden heaven. And don’t even get me started on their milkshakes… thick, creamy, and just what you need on a warm summer day! Try it now folks!
Great food. One of the better burgers I’ve had in a long time—and I am kind of a burgeraholic. The vibe is great. I could sit at that front railing for hours
The food was amazing and the view from the diner was really nice! The staff was friendly and kind! Especially a boy with grey short pants! I ordered Hut Breakfast Sandwich and he personally came and gave it to me! I recommend coming here and experiencing the Hungry Hut for yourselves!
It was a holiday weekend, they were incredibly busy, but the food still tasted delicious! Excellent French fries, delicious burgers. Great food for kicking it by the lake on a hot, smoky California summer day. Also just a freaking cozy vibe to the place
Don’t tell my vegetarian friends, but I had to break down and try the Hut Burger. Worth every cheating bite! The fries are unbelievable. Crisp and hot and the perfect amount of seasoning. If you are lucky enough to sit outside and watch the “Neil” show - great bartender it’ll multiply the experience. Can’t wait to come back. If you are in Shaver lake you gotta stop by, bring the kids or don’t. Order take out or stay for the whole experience. If you stay you gotta have a milkshake!
The Hungry Hut is the perfect spot for burgers, shakes, and drinks all in one place! The burgers are packed with flavor and cooked just right — juicy, fresh, and satisfying. Their shakes are thick, creamy, and taste like a treat on their own. On top of that, having a bar right inside makes it easy to pair your meal with a cold beer or cocktail. The service is always friendly and quick, and the atmosphere has a fun, laid-back vibe that works whether you’re grabbing a casual meal, hanging out with friends, or watching a game with a drink. Highly recommend The Hungry Hut if you’re looking for great food, awesome shakes, and a spot to relax with a drink — they’ve got it all!
Stopped after a week off the grid! Fantastically good and well prepared; buns toasted, fries crispy, basically perfect fast food! Grilled chicken sandwich was awesome! Try the Berry Milkshake!!
I have eaten at the hungry hut a couple of times and they have pretty darn good hamburgers. I also like their onion rings and fries combo. I do have to say it's better to sit and have their burgers when they come out of the kitchen but we couldn't resist a lunch date at the lake. The burger was still great at the lake.
Our family came up for the day to Shaver, we stopped for lunch at the Hungry Hut because it was our favorite to eat. The hut burger was amazing and even better than years ago. The service was amazing, Neil and Gus family were very kind and friendly. I would highly recommend this to anyone traveling to Shaver lake! Amazing experience!
The drive to this place is absolutely spectacular! However, once you arrive, the food makes the drive worth it! It's a relaxing place with burgers, hot dogs, grilled cheese, grilled chicken, onion rings, fries, and the most delectable shakes you ever care to taste. The service is stupendous, but there may be a wait because this place is popular 😉. There is outdoor seating and a couple of spots inside as well. EVERYTHING is fresh made. Due be mindful if driving up, you're going into the mountains this there may be snow. Safe travels and enjoy!!
The problems I have with service at Hungry Hut has more to do with Shaver becoming too crowded and busy than it does the actual establishment. Food takes a long time, hard to get attention from staff because they're so busy. Again, I think this has more to do with too many people, the staff works with what they have in their tiny kitchen.
The burgers are really good. The young girl at the counter may need to have some knowledge on the menu when the customer asks questions about the menu. Overall, it was a very nice spot to eat after a beautiful swim at the lake.
The food was good and the portions were more than generous but the price tag was a little much for some basic burgers and fries. It didn't seem like anyone wiped up tables or anything for quite a while. It's hard to enjoy my burger in someone else's drippings, but some dirty tables and the cost are my only complaints. The gals at the window were very nice and I enjoyed every bite.
This place has gone thru many changes. These photos are from a couple weeks ago. I've been going here for over 20 years and this time the service and food were both good. You just can't be a crazy tourist asking for extra for free. You gotta get the chocolate milkshake, it was so good!!!
35 dollars for a burger fries and a shake the burger and fries are pretty good the shake is delicious they have a good selection of milkshakes they also sell 8 dollar beers on tap.
My thoughts on this place are mixed. It's a mountain atmosphere for sure. The staff get it done but I heard a lot of bickering and a little shouting my last visit. The fries were not to my liking, as they seemed overly greasy and hard. It's a little disappointing because the shakes are so good, the peppermint especially is wonderful. Good grilled cheese, good burgers, and limited space but overall very good still
The Hungry Hut is tucked away in Shaver Lake. I have eaten here before. Their burgers are well-known. When the various berries are in season, Hungry Hut will whip up great milkshakes for you. My 1/2 pound Hut Burger was "supremely delicious." The lady taking your order greeted us with a big hello, had our orders correct, and brought our food to the table. Most of the customers were friendly and enjoyed restaurant. Parking is available, but limited.
Giving it a 3 star review JUST because the shakes are bomb although they gave my kids and husband diarrhea.. they didn’t mind since the shakes are bomb. We even went two days in a row. I had the strawberry shake but my stomach was fine. They had chocolate & Oreo. Burgers are not good. I ordered two kids meals and 4 HUT Burgers. Hut burgers were soggy which I wouldn’t think they would since it took them 45 min (which we weren’t told there was a wait and there weren’t many people there at the time of our order, the wait wasn’t an issue. That’s expected in a small tourist town) to give us our order with one kids meal missing and another one being VERY RAW!! I have picture, but unfortunately it doesn’t let me post!. You want a good burger go to Shaver Lake Pub N Grub… there’s a wait there too but so worth the meal. Again, the shakes are good but not the burgers.
The food was good, me and my friend had gotten a hut burger and a cheese burger as well, however they messed up my friends order by leaving in the mayo and onions. Aside from this, the food itself left something to be desired as the patty was dry and there was little to no bbq sauce. Furthermore, it was a grand total of $54 for two people and that’s not including the $1 charge for refills. The service was great and staff was very friendly, but the price definitely doesn’t match the quality of the food. I’d compare it to something you’d order from The Habit. The milkshakes were definitely a home run when we had gone the previous day. Coming in at about $7.45 the milkshakes were very delicious and peering into the kitchen area you can see that these shakes are made with ACTUAL ice cream and not powdered bags like some restaurants use.
Excellent Burger, Wild Ride Why don't burgers do well in school? Because they're always getting grilled! Speaking of which, the Hungry Hut Burger I had was absolutely excellent and clearly passed its final exams with flying colors. The fries and onion rings were solid companions on this culinary journey. While the food was great, I did find it a bit on the salty side for my taste. The main event, however, was the service, which was a truly wild experience. It seemed a bit understaffed, with one person heroically attempting to manage orders, drinks, and milkshakes all at once. The coordination between the cashier and the bar felt like watching a play where the actors hadn't rehearsed together. A little more harmony in the front of the house would go a long way in improving the overall comfort and flow. Would I recommend it? Yes, but with a condition. If you're on a quest for a top-tier burger and your patience is legendary, this is your place. It's a great spot for those who value the quality of the patty over the coordination of the service.
Ok food for the area with limited selection it’s one of the best shaver has to offer. But the customer service is not the best, and the wait time is ridiculous. Last time we went I ordered a few burgers and fries with 2 shakes we waited almost 45 minutes! Damn near could’ve driven back to Fresno and ordered from a local restaurant instead of waiting outside for that long. Also one bathroom and just about everyone leaving the lake stops here to use it, can be very messy if it’s not occupied. Food is ok, not bad but nothing special. Shakes are good, We did really like the onion rings.
Location wise had great atmosphere, clean bathrooms, and cashier answered my questions, service was pretty quick too. Down side its over priced for the quality and amount of food you are getting. We ordered a few items for five of us and the total was about $100. The tri tip sandwich was plain no sauce but the meat was good, we had two different burgers the meat was dry not the best burgers. We also had a grilled chicken sandwich which came out great probably the best item we ordered. Item I would not get is the "pulled pork sandwich" not sure what I was expecting but it was a weird flavor sauce or grease on a hamburger bun it came in so it was runny and made the bread soggy real quick and for $18+ for this item is way over priced for just meat and soggy bread.
Waited about 40 minutes to receive my order even though the place was not busy. The milkshake I got was delicious though and I like the big straws that they use for the milkshakes it helps. The fries could be better they were cold and stale and the hamburger patties seemed a little dry. But can’t complain too much it’s hard to find good food in the mountains unless you’re cooking it yourself. At least there’s a place you can stop by and get a burger in the mountains.
I ordered the double burger. It was to put it simply, tasteless. The patties were overcooked and no seasoning. The fries weren't burnt but they were stale and honestly tasted like they had added sugar to them. Would not eat here again. The burgers at the pud and grub are better than this.
This place has changed a lot. The food isn't as good anymore. Our burger patties were undercooked and didn't taste fresh. The onion rings were good, but the fries had way too much salt on them. The chicken in the tenders appeared to have been precooked before they were breaded and cooked again. The atmosphere is cool and looks nice. The staff was not pleasant or professional at all. When we were leaving we thanked them for the service, just to be polite, and they ignored us.
Feeling duped by the 4.5 stars this place has. I've never been let down by a burger joint with good rating until now. Fries were an absolute pile of mush. With only a few burgers on the menu you would think they are all made to perfection. We got the Hut Burger. It was undercooked and the blandist toppings. Bun was terrible. Cool spot to eat outside and watch traffic by but had to listen to employees inside behind us cussing and yelling and goofing off. We love independent burgers joints in small towns and the Hungry Hut was such a disappointment.
We really wanted to like it since it's near our weekend home. But we didn't. I ordered the Hut Burger, my buns were stale and dry. The other sandwiches that were ordered were just plain and kind of sad looking tbh (grilled cheese sandwich, BLT, and Hut Dog). As I said, I love to support the local community, but this place was just not the experience that we had hoped for. Onion rings and Fries were good.
UPDATE 2025: they now serve alcohol, the line is super long, the food is super expensive. I get that inflation happened but the new owner changed it to be more than a hamburger place. Which is fine, but someone needs to start a new hamburger place. It’s all about the strawberry shake!
I haven’t had too bad of an experience with the food, with the exception of a burger being browned on the outside and completely bright red in the middle. The issue is with the way customers are treated. The owner will most definitely respond with toxicity and most likely call me a liar. That much is evident if you look at the owners responses to the reviews. Calling people liars and telling them to fix their tastebuds is not professional at all. We’ve all seen past comments about tourist and hunters that are offering their hard earned money for your services. You have the right to refuse service, just as customers have the right to not spend their income there. It’s unfortunate.
Staff was extremely rude to my family and refused to correct a mistake with a tip, effectively robbing them. We've made several attempts to contact the owner with no response and more vitriol from staff. I ordered the hot dog. Bland, tasteless fare. Perhaps it has just been a bad week for them. Don't know...but after a calm, nice family weekend together at Shaver, it wasn't a great note to end on. Addendum: Owner's response is blatantly false. We have not been contacted. We've contacted YOU, twice. Your staff explained absolutely nothing and did not direct us to any signs about signing or any such matter. While waiting for our food, my family member noticed the mistake and went to the counter to speak with your employee. She was rude and at first sarcastically asked to take down my family member's name and number, and then misspelled it. When corrected, she threw the paper at my family member and stormed off. Another employee gave us her name, as she was just as shocked by her behavior as we were. Since we paid for the food, we ate it. That gave me the impression that either you don't have any skill in choosing employees with character, or at the very least she was upset she had to work on a busy Sunday afternoon. Regardless, it was unacceptable. Instead of responding to a customer with concern and decency, you've lied blatantly and completely. Shame on you. P.S. the hot dog was bland. I get to decide about that, just in case you forgot how service works.
Their owner works the register and automatically adds a 20% tip to every order without the knowledge/consent of the customer. At the end of my order, she added the tip, without me knowing, and said something to the effect of “Is everything right?” as she flipped the screen for me to sign. I signed the receipt without questioning her confusing statement because the place was slammed. When I noticed on my receipt that there was a 20% tip added that I didn’t put, I brought it up to the owner. Her response to me was to tell me to pay attention better as the customer. Her actions felt sneaky and misleading. I would never return here. I expected a long wait (which was over and hour) due to the holiday traffic and limited places I was happy to wait, but the dishonesty part is what ruined it for me.
The prices are way high. We paid almost $70 for 2 burgers, fries/onion rings, and 1 shake. The girl taking our order had a, I don't want to be here attitude why are you bothering me. The bacon cheese burger was just OK, the fries and onion rings were good, the shake was great. Went to the beer garden expecting several local brews. They have 4 taps all were from Firestone nothing local. Fail for a beer garden. All n all we won't be coming back. Response to owner. We were anything but rude to your employee that had a serious, don't bother me attitude. And how can you tell if we were rude by looking at images on a camera. If we appeared rude it's because we were reflecting your employees poor attitude. Looking at our order what did we order and what time were we there? You probably had several hundred people come through that day. We will absolutely not recommend or return to your below average establishment.
Cold Burgers, bad service. Long waits 50 minutes to get our food another 20 minutes to get our drinks. People, long lines don't always mean the food is delicious. I will never eat there again. They need to invest in better Management. I have never received my food in 2 parts with no disregard. " Sorry we are very busy" great problem to have if you have the staff and are able to fullfill orders maintining quality not quantity.
Well I messed up it had been 2 years since I've been .... And I forgot how bad it was apparently. And nothing changed. Did an online order this time @ 9:22 am and it said it would be ready in 30-35 minutes showed up in 40 and when they finally acknowledged me they said it would be 5 more minutes. 15 minutes later I asked how my order was looking and got a ride " it will be 5 minutes" food still sucked double burger one patty over cooked one severely under cooked. Save yourself some time and go somewhere else. I am ready for some smart ass response to this review as well. Because that's what they do. Do not spend your money here. Photos of old review below. Had to delete/ repost so I could be seen higher up in the list.
The workers had an attitude the whole time, there was hair cooked into the food not just laying on top. Worst dining experience I ever had. Would never recommend going here. STAFF NEEDS NEW TRAINING CAUSE THATS NOT ACCEPTABLE.
Ordered a burger with bacon and I was going to check all of the bags of food but the lady kept reassuring me that all the food was there, sure enough we drive and park somewhere and she forgot the $2 bacon the grilled cheese wasn't even grilled, and it was very slow. It's too expensive a place to be forgetting stuff. 🙄
It ain't the same anymore atmosphere is different new owners. Employees we're annoying, You'll understand it if you go, been going since I was a kid, gonna try some other spots up there. Prices are high which was cool before but now it ain't worth it
never again. our burger meat was raw and burgers came plain. we were expecting vegetables coming in the food for that price. we also got a grilled cheese that came burnt. wait time was too long for our food to come out not as expected. shakes and fries were the good, but never again.
