Today we drove in from San Antonio Texas. First time eating at Abuelos Restaurant. We had the best experience with our waitress Crystal H. She was the best. Very professional best customer service that I have had in a very long time. The food was great. Crystal was very vigilant and attended to us. Thank for having such great employees. Thank you again Crystal H. We will definitely return and will gladly refer my friend and family. The Cisneros
This was the first time in years that I have eaten here due to moving out of state. The food was delicious and the service was great. The enchiladas and queso dip/chips are always a great choice. We had a large party, and our waitstaff was very attentive and made our dinner that much more enjoyable.
Josh was an amazing server! Very attentive and kind. Food was amazing! Felt a little underdressed because it is a very nice restaurant. Good place for a date night.
Jordan was amazing! Best margarita I've had in the states and Mexico! Services was quick and friendly. We willl be back!
Spent my moms birthday here with my family. I asked the server before the meal to suprise my mom was candles and a cake that I bought for her and she did not disappoint me at all. Service was great. She was attentive and had a big top by herself including us. She knew what she was doing. The hostess were not nice. They took our reservation wrong but I had a great server to make up for that. They updated the inside with a new look. It looks more modern now with the remodeled bar and new trees in the restaurant. Which looks fabulous. I do think they need a new host stand the one they have is old looking. I will ask for samantha again next time I go to abuelos.
Food was delicious waitress was very attentive to our big group.
Love Abuellos! I tried one of the new plates this time and I was glad I did. It had tons of food and I couldn’t eat it all. I always love the endless chips and salsa, habanero is my favorite. My plate had a Chili Relleno, Beef Enchilada covered with Queso, Chicken Empanada,Rice and Beans. The empanada was the start of the show. They choirs sell a plate with those at the entree. Chili relleno was fired perfectly with a light batter and stuffed with hot melted cheese. The enchilada was very good with the cheese sauce. Rice and bean was good as usual. We also tried the platter with Fried Chicken Breast covered with Chorizo. The chicken was very tasty and well cooked and works well with the chorizo. I would orders either again with no regrets. I always leave here stuffed.
This place gets a 10 for atmoshere ! Service- well our waitress put her thumb in our salsa by accident. Instead of taking it back and getting another, she wiped her thumb on her apron and sat it on down on our table... Right in front of all 6 of us!! We could not believe it but decided to stay because the food is good good good. We sat that salsa in their plants. She brought 4 of our orders. Ten minutes later, she brought the other 2. The silverware had stuck on food from the last persons meal ( hmmm ,they had a nice green salad of sorts I see). 3 pieces of silverware in all with food chunks. We showed her. She looked irritated ( she was busy. The place was packed as usual ). She changed them. So,I mean- wow. Dont know anymore how to rate this place. Bathrooms were perfectly clean. I mean perfect !!! Smelled amazing !!! Hey Abuelos ,let your janitor clean your dishes and serve the food. That way we know the dishes are clean !! And if their thumb does go in our salsa,i can bet you 50 dollars it's a clean thumb!! Lol !!! I dont know that I'm ever coming back. Maybe never.....
A good restaurant for get togethers. Excellent atmosphere . Food is homemade very good worth the trip and price
Jose was the best server I've had in years. Sharp and very courteous. Great service Jose!!
I typically don't like Mexican food however this place has changed my mind it was absolutely amazing. And the portions were big enough to be able to take some home. Debra was a great server she was so attentive that every time I tried to give my daughter spicy salsa she would pop back up behind me. I will definitely be coming back to this place. With one of our meals there was a spot in the chicken that had a vein that I thought was a raw spot. I was wrong and even still they replaced the entire dish. Debra went above and beyond with us. She even offered to help my daughter and handicap wife to the restroom.
YUM. Delicious food, beautiful, fantastic atmosphere. Attentive wait staff
The service here is incredible. Have been there three times now and every time the waiter/waitress is phenomenal.
While on vacation I took my husband here for his birthday. His first visit to any Abuelo’s and I had not eaten at an Abuelo’s in quite some time. Neither of us were disappointed at all. Even though we were there on a weeknight I made reservations anyway. So glad we did. There were quite a few people waiting for tables when we arrived but we were seated immediately. Once seated, our server, Mike, was at our table in no time at all. He was fantastic! Very attentive, very personable. We thoroughly enjoyed being seated at his table. We had taken the opportunity to look at the menu ahead of time and knew what we wanted - at least from the bar. We ordered one El Jefe Margarita to share. It was a lot! But…totally delicious and refreshing. We also ordered the guacamole as an appetizer and the Fajita Trio for our meal. Oh. My. Goodness. We had more food than we knew what to do with and it was all so very tasty. The beef and chicken were very tender and moist. The Yucatán barbecue shrimp had a fantastic flavor. Since it was my sweetie’s birthday we got the Dulce de Leche cheesecake to take home since we were totally stuffed from our fabulous meal. It was a great evening all around. I’m so pleased we chose Abuelo’s for a special birthday dinner. Thank you Abuelo’s, you’re the best! We’re on the hunt for other locations on our travels.
Great food, awesome service! We tried something new in the menu; it was delicious!
This place is continually packed however, always tries very hard to seat you in a timely manner. I have been two times now and can say that the waitresses are very attentive even with their sections full. The food has been pretty good both times, the soup wasn't bad but the burritos tend to be better. The queso is a little more pricey than most places but they do offer a bigger portion than most so there is a little give and take. All in all, a great place to go if you want a little higher end mexican/tex-mex.
This was a really good Mexican restaurant! Food was really good and I especially enjoyed all their salsas. My favorite was the habanero sauce...spicy! The service was great! Very friendly and accommodating. I got the Grande plate so I could try a few things. Nice portions! Tasty frozen strawberry margaritas! Went for the flan last second when I saw it on the list below...haha! Simple and delicious. Bumped to 5 stars for even having the flan! Lol!
It's a very busy place. We went at lunch time and pretty busy. The food was delicious and the service was great. I didn't get pictures of the food but I'm pretty sure you have seen them before. They got lunch specials and variety of delicious food. I'm from out of state and I highly recommend this restaurant 😁
We had the lunch specials. The salad was amazing. The tortilla soup was bland, but putting in the tremendous salsa fixed it. My husband said his enchilada platter was excellent.
Im a very picky eater but my waitress was very accommodating. She helped me pick out something and asked if I wanted any toppings or just wanted it plain. Lovely lady ❤️
Lots of fun! Delicious food. But the service from Josh made the experience! He was an amazing server and he was diligent in doing his job with excellence! Thanks Josh! Give him a promotion!
Penny and Anita are 2 of the best servers! Very attentive and nice. Food is great and the atmosphere is pleasant.
Food was absolutely great, came VERY quickly, i had the enchiladas and the meal was excellent and fair priced. My only gripe is the beer was pricey and coors lite belongs in a cheaper cup presentation lol.
Jordan at the bar provided the best service I have ever had at any restaurant. Having worked in food service myself, and being friends with bartenders, I could not let it go unnoticed. Thank you Jordan, even though we placed an order 40min to closing you made my night. I will definitely be coming back to see you!
We had an awesome time with family! Mike Brown was phenomenal. Thank you so much for an excellent experience.
The service was fantastic. I got there right at the beginning of dinner service, and it was getting busy but no lines. The wait staff was terrific: courteous, efficient, and timely. Food was well presented and tasted very good. I had an appetizer because I was facing a long drive and didn't want a heavy meal. The facility was very clean and well decorated. Eating here was a great experience, and I think you would be very pleased.
Best food ever. Wish we had on e in Brownwood where we live. This place never disappoints.
Food and service were amazing. Sad to hear Jordan is leaving. He is a great waiter and bar tender
We have gone to abuelos many times for birthday events and just to dine in!! I have to give a big shout out to our waiter Jose after tonight. Not once did we run out of chips and salsa or drinks get empty. He was on top of everything and did a excellent job!!
What a special place! Great food , friendly staff, beautiful restaurant and great parking. Can't say anything negative about this location. Staff were attentive and helpful and the food came out quickly. Pricing was not outrageous, however you could probably find food for cheaper, but it wouldn't be nearly as good or come with the service and care that you get at Abuelo's.
Ash gave us the best service we’ve ever had at Abuelo’s. The food was amazing, the atmosphere was perfect, and the whole experience felt genuinely warm and memorable. We’ll definitely be back—highly recommend!
Great place to go for lunch or dinner. Friendly and fast service. The food is excellent. I ordered the fajita trio and enjoyed it to the last bite. I had the el jefe margarita and will be my go-to. They brought me 4 different salsas, smoked, tomatillo, regular, and habanero. I definitely recommend this place.
I went tonight with my husband and my mom in law. We had the most wonderful experience We sat open seating in the bar at a booth so no wait at all Josh was our waiter and he gave me exactly the most wonderful dining experience I could ask for. I’m a waitress myself have been for 6 years so my standards that I hold my dining experience to is pretty high. The food was all excellent best steak I’ve had at all in Abilene at a Mexican food cuisine We will definitely be coming back
Our server was Mike. He was very attentive. Came and took our drink order quickly. Was there for refills without asking. After taking our food order he checked up on us regularly. Food came out hot and fresh. The only negative was we asked for no jalapeños on the nachos, and they came out with jalapeños. We just picked them off and continued with the meal. Most definitely will return, and hope we get seated in Mike's area again.
My family and I love going to eat at this restaurant. It is so beautiful and the service we get there is amazing. The staff are fast and take such great care of us. I have to be very careful with my food because of my food allergies and they make sure to prepare for me with that in mind. Thank you Abuelo’s for your wonderful service. Looking forward to seeing y’all again.
Ash gave us truly wonderful service during our visit to Abuelo’s. He was attentive, friendly, and made sure we had everything we needed without us ever having to ask. His kindness and professionalism made our meal feel extra special. We really appreciated him and the care he put into our experience.10/10 would come back again!
We've dined here for years. In our opinion, they have the best chicken fajitas and margaritas in Abilene. The service can be hit or miss depending who you get as a waiter. I think the prices are very reasonable and we take advantage of their rewards app on our phone and frequently get $15 off our meal.
It was my first time visiting this restaurant — it’s my mom’s favorite place, and she brought me here. I was really impressed with the cozy atmosphere, friendly service, and how delicious every dish was. Truly authentic Tex-Mex! I’m from Thailand and have had a lot of Tex-Mex during the trip. I would say this is one of the best Tex-Mex restaurants we’ve ever been to and become my favorite. I’ll definitely come back again.
Went to Abuelo's to celebrate a work promotion with a friend and co-worker. The food was awesome plenty to go around we ate till we were full. We ordered the queso appetizer and then the fajitas for two. Along with two Dr peppers. The appetizer was excellent the cheese sauce was perfect. Our host was an awesome person. She checked on us through the entirety of our dinner, and that is a huge plus for me, service was prompt and good. The fajitas were on point the shrimp was amazing the steak was great the mixed vegetables to meat ratio was perfect. We couldn't finish the whole thing which was a good thing. I do recommend anybody wanting to eat authentic food to come to this awesome place. There might be a 10-minute wait but believe me when I tell you it was worth it. Will definitely return. I only rated four stars for atmosphere because it was a little loud and there was a lot of people on a Thursday not much the restaurant to do about it except maybe build another restaurant :) will recommend to anyone that wants a decent experience at a modest price.
It is a wonderful environment to have lunch or dinner with your family. The atmosphere is cheerful. There is plenty of room to fellowship after church. The food is LOVELY, brought out in a timely manner, and staff are polite, social, and clean. Courtney, the manager, went out of her way to help get menu accommodations for my mother. Plus, the high-quality authentic Mexican entrées is what did it for me! 10/10 Thank you, Courtney and Luis for the EXCELLENT service! ☺️
I was visiting the area and googled the best Mexican Restaurants. Abuelo's was listed as #1st. I read the reviews and decided to give it a try. The restaurant is in a strip mall so they share a parking lot. Other stores were open and the lot was rather busy but I got lucky as someone was leaving. I thought wow this restaurant is very popular. When I went in, it was about 5:30 p.m, on a Wednesday and there weren't that many customers but a lot of employees...some standing around talking (busboys and such). I thought hmm, the parking lot was deceiving as to how busy the restaurant is. I thought the ambiance of the place was very delightful. Bright, cheery, open, yet when I was seated it felt cozy. The hostess was very pleasant when seating us. Our waitress was our only hiccup. She was as kind and professional as she could be though I felt she must have had something on her mind not allowing her to stay concentrated on her work. They have a nice selection of margaritas (that tasted like fresh muddled margaritas I have had in Mexico) the one I chose was a hand shaken (yes you get the shaker to keep refilling your glass) that was delicious. My husband chose a Coke zero. Everything was good until he received his refill, he received a Doctor Pepper instead. We let her know, she says oh no, another table then received his drink. No worries really, she takes the glass returns with a fresh drink...the same problem! My husband says he'll just drink it not to mention anything to her. Now I would assume at this point the other table that wants the Doctor Pepper would say something and she'd be back...but that didn't happen! I ordered the mixed chicken and steak fajitas. Everything came, looked delicious, tasted delicious. The fresh flour tortilla shells, soft and warm (I did have a choice of flour or corn). My only complaint of the fajitas would be, I like green peppers and onions, the onion quantity didn't disappoint but I quite literally had four thin sliced pieces of green pepper! My husband ordered the Grande Burrito. It came on an extra large plate and filled it. He said it was very good and again with the housemade tortilla shell, he said it was definitely noticeable. We did also try the Bacon-wrapped stuffed shrimp. Scrumptious, is the only word that comes to mind. Don't let the word jalapeno in the description turn you off, it's not hot in that way. It's smokey from the bacon and being fire-grilled but is truly scrumptious! When we were getting ready to bag up our leftovers we asked our waitress if we could get any of the salsas to go. Now I should mention here they bring you a trio of salsas when seated. A spicy slightly smokey one, a sweeter from fresh tomatillo one and a regular what you would expect tomato one...all are very good. So anyway the waitress says yes you can get salsa to go. So my husband says we'd like to add to our check a pint of each of the two red ones. She says she'll go get them and our check. She comes back with a little cup of each that is holding about an eighth of a cup. Definitely not the pint of each we requested. We looked at each other decided against correcting her paid our check, left her a generous tip. As we both figured she didn't have her mind completely in the game and maybe wasn't having the best day. By the time we were leaving the place was packed. The parking lot was still very full but by the time we left the other businesses looked mostly closed and like the parking lot was busy because of the restaurant. Overall our experience was very nice I would have given 5 star's but with the little bit of a hiccup with our waitress, I had to go with 4.
I really like this place!! It’s got a WONDERFUL bar atmosphere and the food is really good. I’ve gone here with my kids, my friends… and it’s great every time. HOWEVER, just be prepared to wait for a ya le or a place at the bar because it’s usually CROWDED, esp on the weekends. I wish the parking was better- but there’s only so many parking spaces in a place that also has other businesses too!! When I went with friends, I’d just take a cab to and from my house so I didn’t have to worry about having drinks and driving!
Driving through Abilene and this was really a treasure. It's more pricey than normal mexican but worth it. The meal started out with chips and had three types of salsa (the habanero one is fantastic). Started with their bacon wrapped stuffed shrimp and they were great. I ordered the steak fajita chimichanga for my entree. My wife got the got the chicken fajita tacos. I loved my chimi. My wife liked the tacos but was disappointed that their fajita style didn't come with bell peppers and onions.
Always enjoy, service was a little slow last time I went but usually excellent
Came to visit on a Sunday lunch so it was packed but we were seated in less than five minutes which was unexpected. Ordered and food came in just the right time. My wife ordered the chicken fajita which she said was surprisingly good. I got the taco and burrito combo which was okay, beef was a little saltier than I would want it. Kid complained that the his grilled chicken and fries was disappointingly cold. The place was set up nice and the ambiance was very Mexican which I loved. Restroom, though, was littered with paper towels overflowing from the bin. Overall liked the place and will return soon.
Food was good and the service was as well. I had never seen enchiladas with Sunnyside eggs so I had to take a picture of my friends food. I will return to try something different. I had the fresca bowl. It was actually good.
Got my table way faster than what was said and the servers are quick with everything, food has never failed to impress me. Yesterday I got some bacon wrapped shrimp with rice and it was probably the best ive had. Rice had a littlw after taste but thats probably just me. For the cost its a great place.
Stopped in with a group of other parents and kiddos after our daughter's basketball tournament. They were just really, really slow at getting us seated. Like turtles. I get we were a large group of 16, but it shouldn't take over an hour to be seated when it wasn't even busy. It was at lunch too. We've gone in large groups a lot over the years to different restaurants (including other Abuelo's) and never waited even half as long anywhere else! This could have won a world record. The white sauce was not what we were used to. It tasted like blue cheese dressing and had chunks in it. 7 of us tried it at the table and we all agreed it was gross. The enchiladas and refried beans were great. Sweet tea was also really good. The chips and salsa were delicious. The decor was really cute and nice to look at. I do think they are overpriced compared to other Mexican restaurants.
We loved our waitress, Miss Lydia. We got there right at 11 for lunch. The food was really good but my friends meal was supposed to have no tomatoes yet she spent quite a bit of time picking them out. I loved what I got but the vegetables were so bland and undercooked I couldn't eat them but the main dish was great. We also loved all of the salsas we tried. The restaurant itself was beautiful
Hard to pick up online orders no one looks at you and I had to wave huge to grab anyone’s attention. Please be courteous to those who walk in to pick up!
Fajita meat is way too fake/low quality for how expensive the fajitas are. Everything else is great.
They need some upkeep. The booth was tore up and it was so loud I had a hard time hearing our waitress. She was sweet but forgot our appetizers sadly. Our food was good. My husband enjoyed the fajitas. My combo plate was not bad but not absolutely amazing. Trying to be positive. Didn't have a bad time.
Typically have a great experience. However, most recently not so much. Server was not very attentive. Drinks went empty for a while, waited a long time for food to come out and when it did, we didn't have silverware to eat it with. Had to sit looking at our food for a few minutes before we could get a servers attention that's when I took the picture (note no silverware and empty drinks). Food tasted great though, just not the best service even for it not being very crowded. They were very accommodating for my request for tamale sub due to gluten allergy.
The food and drinks were amazing. You should definitely try the blackberry mint mojito. ***Now the customer service from our waitress Mariah G. was horrible. She didn’t introduce herself and was rude. It made us feel uncomfortable to even ask for more items. Very unfortunately they have an employee like that.
I felt like I was at Disney walking into the huge restaurant. Its more "white people" Mexican food. Draft beer (small) is $7. Kids plate is good even for bigger kids. They had a large selection of mixed adult beverages. Kids cups were on the larger size so you dont worry abt refills. Chips were fresh and obviously not reheated. Their rice was good
Came for lunch, atmosphere was great. Waitress did ok other than an incorrect item, but no big deal. The issue was the food. I ordered the pick-2 fajitas, and the amount of chicken that came with them was an absolute joke. $24 and I get just a few strips of chicken that fits on one of the small tortillas, and that's all. One mini chicken fajita.. There was a bit more shrimp, and was able to stretch it for the next 2 small tortillas. The shrimp had great taste, so I enjoyed that. The rice was good, and plenty for the 3 fajitas, but the black beans came in a small tiny cup and had absolutely no taste. Comparing this to the "other" Mexican place that's known for their sizzling fajitas, I was really disappointed in what I got here. Their trio of 3 meat choice is the same price as this 2 meat, but even with their 2 meat choice you get way more chicken, 4 tortillas, and an actual bowl of black beans instead of a little min-cup. (which actually have a flavor). The experience itself wasn't bad, but after spending $30 and leaving hungry, it definitely wasn't worth it, so I'll have to stick with the other place when I want fajitas.
We arrived at Abuelo‘s in Abilene about 3 o’clock on Tuesday afternoon. After a doctor visit. We are from Brownwood and our dining in experience was not acceptable. We had to wait nearly an hour to get our food. We were only about two of 20 total people in the whole restaurant. The enchiladas came out warm at best certainly not hot the service by the waiter who was not very helpful and didn’t even wanna listen to what we had to say was just more to make not a good experience. My ice tea was like colored water at Best and the waiter brought some more which was not much better. We decided not to wait for them to redo the order. We were already full of chips and tired by then, so we just got up and walked out not a good dining experience at Abuelo’s. If you go I hope you have a better experience than we did.
Got catering here well over $400 when I picked the food up it was all neatly STUFFED in a single box I asked the manager MELISSA if she could put half the items in a additional box and she declined me I asked what will happen if the box breaks and she nonchalantly said once the food leaves the premises it is not there responsibility I was appalled and also a bit taken back after some back and forth i realized MELISSA was unconcerned and was only there to give the bare minimum i walked away feeling defeated and unvalued and sure enough the box CAVED and the catering fell right to the floor!!! as i begin to pick the food up off the floor I decided to stop and snap a picture because this could and should have been avoided MELISSA gaves this restaurant a bad name i will not eat here where i don't matter
Our family of 5 has been to abuelos 3 times now. Our food has never been right. Tonight, my father in laws steak tacos came out ground beef. my mother in law’s chicken burrito came out steak. My cheese enchiladas came out with green sauce when I asked for red. My wife’s enchiladas came out with cheese when she asked for no cheese. The worst one, my 2 year olds chicken came out raw in the middle. This place….
Came to pick up a door dash got here at 4:03 and I’ve worked fast food . It doesn’t take 20+ minutes to make Family Nachos Chips & Salsa Roja Half Pint . I’m currently still here as we speak. Most of the workers are standing around talking .
Paid $61.45 for a 2-3 person family fajita meal and got less fajita meat than I would have gotten on a single person fajita plate! For that price this is rediculous. I knew I should have just went to Texas Roadhouse for steaks. Then my food was promised at 8:06pm and was not ready until closer to 8:30pm. And after all that y'all still forgot my damn tortillas and food was cold. And yes I did check my bag before driving off but what I thought was a bag of tortillas ended up being another bag of chips. Can't even go back out to pick up tortillas from snother place because most places have already closed early for NYE. Total rip off. Im usually a pretty huge fan of Abuelos but not recommending or eating here again.
No Host/Hostess. Was seated at a table by a busser in bar area and waited for service. It didn't happen. It's like I was invisible, even though a nice young man bussing tables seated me with a menu and tableware. Never been to an Abuelos like this one before. I had not eaten all day, so after about 10 minutes, I left.
Overpriced reheated chicken and steak fajita combo. $10 for microwaved Tostitos cheese dip you get at the grocery store. Tissue paper thin chips that's so britle it couldn't hold the guacamole. Worst of all we had to get our dessert to go because of the bug on the cushion across from us made us lose our appetite. BUT our server was very polite and attentive. Time and $93 wasted....
Not Real, authentic Mexican food, Adam the waiter was good !!! not his fault the food was not what we expected, rice is not fully cooked ground meat taste like taco seasoning and red enchiladas taste like chili powder….. and last the thing is the water is tap to overprice to not have at least good water .
If you are looking for authentic Mexican food or Tex-Mex this is not the place. I don’t even know where to begin. I don’t enjoy leaving bad reviews but customers should know what they will get. The first photo is what was advertised and what I expected. The following photos is what I received. To begin with, the crispy taco was not crispy and the meat inside was cold, dry, tasted old and as if it had been mass produced and set under a broken heat lamp. Sadly, Taco Bell would have been better. The chile relleno was strangely, breaded instead of being covered in egg batter as it is traditionally. The cheese it was stuffed with was terrible…and it was not a poblano pepper. The beef and cheese enchilada were smothered with a red sauce that tasted close to canned chili. The chicken enchilada was only half stuffed with what tasted like shredded chicken that had been ground and smothered with a tomato based sauce…the refried beans were obviously canned. The rice was dry and lacked flavor. Lastly, the tamale was dry. It was also smothered with the same chili sauce as the beef and cheese enchilada…the sauce did little to moisten the actual tamale. The waitress was kind and personable. The restaurant itself was well decorated. I wish they had spent the same amount off effort into developing authentic recipes as they did decorating. If the Abuelo is no longer with us, the poor man must be turning in his grave. The Grande Platter was a Grande Disappointment and not worth $24.23. The one star is for the awesome waitresses.
If I could rate this place no stars I would. My husband and his co workers went to dine here but as they walk in the hostess seemed to not want to seat them, insisted that the bar was opening seating and they could sit there but they asked for a table. They got seated and NOONE ever came to help them. A Mexican restaurant racist against Hispanic men just wanting a meal after a long day of work. They sat for a good 10 minutes and still no one came to see if they were ready to order or to get drinks orders. Ridiculous! They decide to leave because they obviously were unwanted. Mind you, the restaurant had 4 other parties seated so was not busy at all. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone. Do better!
