We visited on a weekend evening and waited over an hour, as they do not take reservations and the space is small. It is a popular spot and still worth trying, though a less busy night may be more enjoyable. We ordered the Caesar salad and the large cioppino. The Caesar was a generous portion for two and overall good, though the dressing was lighter than expected. The croutons were excellent and easily the standout of the salad. The large cioppino was the highlight. The broth looked tomato based but leaned more toward spiced flavors than tomato. It was filled with crab, crab legs, shrimp, fish, clams, and mussels, all well prepared, and bibs were provided since it can get messy. Overall, Anchor Oyster Bar is worth a visit, especially if you can go on a quieter night to avoid the long wait.
This place is a gem. Everything is great but the cioppino is on another level. It’s loaded with perfectly cooked seafood including crab, shrimp, fish, clams and mussels. The broth is so flavorful and well balanced. The small portion is easily shareable for 2 people. Only a small number of tables and no reservations so come midweek to avoid the wait - although it’s worth the wait.
I’ve been to restaurants all over the world and this is up there in the top for seafood. We tried just about everything on the menu. The Ciopinno with garlic bread is an absolute dream. Save the sauce from the clams for more dipping. Order several oysters for palate cleansers between dishes because they’re RICH. When they ask if you want the bib, proudly say yes. Keep it (un?)healthy with the delicious artichoke. You know it’s done well when you can scrape the entire leaf, not just the tip. Don’t sleep on the chowder. And by god please get the ceasar with crab meat. Save up and spend it. Don’t skimp. The wait means you won’t be back a lot so double dip, sip and be happy. A few notes. Get there very early and still expect a wait. I hate waits but this one is worth it. Their wine is not to die for, especially for the quality of food. The wine store across the street is phenomenal so buy wine there and pay the corkage fee - you’ll thank me later. Also, join their wine club if you’re in the city to take advantage of the best back patio in town.
My daughter and I were visiting San Francisco for a museum exhibit and wanted fresh oysters. We found the Anchor Oyster Bar and had an amazing meal. We had to wait for a seat for over an hour, but the way they work their list means everyone on it gets served. It was chilly out and they brought us small cups of an amazing seafood chowder. We had oysters, crab cakes, more chowder, and garlic bread with a bottle of wine. Everything was fantastic. The oysters were fresh and so delicious that we had a second round. The crab cakes were all crab with just a dusting of panko to crisp them up. The chowder is full of seafood and absolutely wonderful. I also won't forget the amazing service. They were swamped and the waitress took the time to explain their waitlist system. While we waited, she kept checking on us and brought us chowder. Once we were seated at the bar, our waitress did a great job, making sure we had what we needed and asking what else we needed even after their closing time passed. Plus the waitress that brought us the chowder kept checking on us too. The place is crowded due to great seafood and impeccible customer service. This will be a go to place for us when we visit.
I used to live around the corner from here and it was one of the best spots in the Castro to snag a tasty lunch or dinner when you were in the mood for some great seafood. Always check the specials just in case, but you can never go wrong with any of the fresh seafood dishes, the chowder, or the lump crab items. Counter seating makes going by yourself a quick lil treat as well. There can definitely be a wait time, but sign up and browse some nearby shops. It's one of the spots I miss the most, since I moved out of that flat. I still love to go when I'm in the area, but that is far less often now..
We got there around 6:15P on a Thursday, there was a small line but you just write your name on the white board and hang out until you're called. It wasn't a terribly long wait time considering the restaurant is very small. Everything we ordered was so well seasoned and fresh. I had a hankering for cioppino and it did not disappoint. It was a bit more herb forward that I was used to but it was delicious nonetheless! Also no pasta in the cioppino - as it should be!
I have lived in San Francisco over 25 years and have always wanted to try Anchor Oyster Bar- I finally made it! It did not disappoint! We had the Clam Chowder, Crab Cakes, Cioppino and Oyster Shooters- all were amazing. This restaurant is an icon and does not disappoint. The best part about the meal was Jessie the server. She was amazing and beyond!
Anchor oyster bar is everything I look for in a restaurant. I prefer local, smallish, hole in the wall, old, well-established, not touristy restaurants. Anchor checks all those boxes. It is small, but it is classy & the ambience cannot be beat. It has been in business since 1977. The food is beyond delicious. The Cioppino is a revelation. I can’t possibly recommend this restaurant enough. It’s my kind of place. It’s a lot of people‘s kind of place!! It is truly a gem.
Oh my god! We had a fantastic meal here, I can't speak highly enough of this place. In fact I wanted to go back the next night and try other things it was so good. We shared everything and started with the daily oysters and all were amazing - cold and fresh, my husband is dreaming of them and the mignonette sauce that went with them. Then we had Artichokes with a citrus aioli, delicious, followed by Scallops then Fettuccine Alfredo with Dungeness Crab on top, it was sublime, not too creamy or cheesy and plenty of crab on top. We also had a delicious Sancerre to wash it all down. Fantastic, well done Anchor team, we'll be back
One of the greatest restaurants I’ve ever been to and I’ve been here 5-6 times total. This restaurant nails everything, the food, the decor, the coziness, and the service are exceptional. Very few restaurants know how to strike perfect balance, and yet anchor oyster bar seems to be the rare gem that can nail that. The food feels like a menu that comes out of a 1950s recipe book - there is nothing fancy, special, or new about it but it is simply executed to a very high level. Its as if the food was extracted out of a Julia Child cookbook and done with exceptional quality. So few restaurants understand how to do simple things well, and Anchor Oyster Bar excels at all of them, and thats why it is so special. It is so unpretentious and unassuming with no gimmicks, its exactly how you ought to experience a restaurant. No qr codes, no yelp waitlist, no take out system, its a sit down, speak to a real human being, hear about the daily special, bustling and cozy restaurant that feels like a bit of a time capsule. Its a special place and you should try it once in your life if you get the chance.
Went at 2:15 on a Saturday afternoon. No wait when we showed up, but a line up formed around 2:30. The food was unbelievable. Had a dozen oysters and the full size cioppino. The cioppino was outstanding, very large dish my wife and split. Absolutely worth the hype and any wait a person chooses to do. The service was great, super friendly. We brought a bottle of champagne for corkage, and some places are miffed when you bring a bottle in, they were happy and very accommodating and brought an ice bucket to place it in. Short review is definitely recommended.
We finally arrived at this cozy, welcoming, and authentic restaurant. There were a lot of people there, but we were the first. Everyone waited patiently, and it was worth it. The food was delicious, everything was fresh, and perfectly prepared. The oyster selection was excellent. The staff was incredibly polite and attentive. It was a great day.
So. Good. We started with crab cake which was jam packed with crab meant and the best combination of crispy and crumbly. Was so hard to stop myself midway just to take this photo. And then the seafood cioppino!!! It looked so good, smelled so good and tasted so goo. I didnt even bother with my phone so no photos sadly haha
Best cioppino and garlic bread I’ve ever had. Everything we had here (oysters, mussels, panzanella, cioppino) was super fresh and delicious. I would definitely come here again. The service was great. the only down side is that there are no reservations so you might have to wait awhile for a table. It was worth the wait though.
Heard about this place from word of mouth - it’s all true!! Come hungry - portions are nice sized. Great presentations, flavors are fresh & clean! Get there early because the seating is very limited and waitlist can be long, but well worth the wait! Had the Boston clam chowder, 1/2 order of Anchor Special, and the smaller portion of their Cioppino. It’s big enough to share!!
really outstanding - was not expecting to like it this much! 6 raw oysters / so fresh, yummy, juicy, meaty. wow. outstanding. favourites were the “summer love” the combination salad with thousand island / just to die for. perfect size. filling, fresh, and the dressing was to die for. good amount of fish on there. 10/10 will be back EXPEDITIOUSLY
I found best seafood in SF at the Anchor Oyster bar. There’s a reason it’s Michelin recommend. Everything was super fresh and delicious; the raw oysters even tasted sweet. I recommend getting the scallops. We came close to closing time and the wait wasn’t bad. Even though we sat by the bar, our waitress was very attentive. I will definitely be back to try more items on the menu.
Been coming here for almost 40 years. Shared many plates; everything is always delicious. I wish they would bring back my all time favorite which is the roasted trout in a brown butter sage sauce. One of the best around but has been absent for too many years! Rose, please!!!!
Overall taste and service was nice. Oyster was very fresh and all is from west coast ocean so it is different from east coast oysters. Steamed clams are feels like soup it was nice and good match with oyster shooter. Crab cake comes with two sauces and well matched. but waiting time was too long , and they can make some tech tools to consider people who stay outside so long, it's worth too wait but these days weather in bay area was so cold.... but love this place!
We looked for a seafood place on maps and had a few options and luckily we chose the right one! 😊 They don't take reservations and it's a popular place so you may have to wait a bit to be seated. We had fresh oysters, steamed clams/mussels, crab cocktail, crab cakes, the shrimp platter and of course the clam chowder. We all had the oysters which were very tasty and fresh. My son got the crab cakes which comes with tarter sauce, roasted potatoes and a side of chowder. They looked good and he said it was excellent 👌. My mom got the wild prawn platter and she loved them! My wife and I shared the steamed shellfish combo and the crab cocktail. The crab meat cocktail was fresh and went well with the cocktail sauce that had a dab of horseradish in it. It's a very nice starter but not a whole meal. The steamed shellfish was exactly what I was hoping for. The sauce was so good that I ordered more bread to keep eating it. 😋 The clam chowder was good but there are other places in the city that I'd rather go to for better clam chowder. The staff/service was great! We got to sit outside with the heaters on which was perfect for a cool evening. Overall a great experience with really good seafood and a welcoming staff. I recommend it for a date or even a family dinner 👍
