Tasting menu was a good choice. Reservations for Flour+Water are hard to come by, but setting up an alert to notify for last minute/day of/before openings does work. They were able to accommodate my allergy and the substitute dish was one of my favorites of the night! Every course was definitely delicious and worth trying.
Flour + Water is the rare San Francisco restaurant that manages to feel both contemporary and timeless, a balance that is far more difficult to achieve than it appears. It is confident without pretension, polished without ever feeling self-conscious. The room has an understated warmth, lively yet composed, and the service is attentive, knowledgeable, and gracefully paced. One feels looked after without being hovered over—an increasingly uncommon pleasure. The food is exceptional. The pastas are the clear triumph: impeccably made, thoughtfully composed, and deeply respectful of tradition while allowing just enough room for creativity. Each dish feels intentional and balanced, rich but never heavy. The quality of the ingredients speaks for itself, requiring no unnecessary embellishment. Flour + Water is not a restaurant one visits merely to try—it is one to return to, to bring discerning guests, and to recommend selectively. In a city full of excellent dining, it stands out through its consistency, restraint, and quiet confidence. A modern classic. Five stars, without reservation
We came here on a Friday night, we had a reservation, and I'm glad we did, because it was absolutely packed!! We did see people attempting to walk in and get a table. They were very disappointed! There were three of us, we ordered many dishes, the standouts were the pizza, and of course the pasta. Also the veggies and the salads were wonderful. Service was excellent, and all the food was absolutely to die for. Don't come here if you are on a low carb diet haha! We also got all three desserts, I like that their menu is small but everything is executed perfectly. What really stood out to me, was the service. The Wait staff were very kind and patient in reminding us that we needed to vacate the table after 2 hours. I think this is perfectly reasonable! Obviously restaurants need to turn over their tables to stay in business. There were so nice about it, once they moved us back to the waiting area so others could have our table they actually gave us little splashes of wine as a thank you! Now, that is exceptional service! We would absolutely come back here.
I highly recommend this restaurant! If you like hearty, substantial, and delicious meals, this is paradise. The portions are massive—pure sincerity on every plate. The taste is even better than I remembered; the spice blends have clearly been optimized. The environment is elegant and quiet, perfect for a long dinner. The staff are highly professional and always catch your needs immediately. I left feeling very full and happy. This is a place where you can bring anyone and be proud of the choice.
Flour + Water Pizza Shop This restaurant has a special place in our hearts as fur parents! We dined outside with our dog, and the staff were very welcoming and accommodating. The pizza was fantastic — hot from the oven with a perfectly crispy thin crust. I loved that the pepperoni wasn’t too salty and the cheese had a beautiful melt. The drinks we ordered came in bottles, which made them a bit pricey, but overall, it was worth it for the experience. There are both indoor and outdoor seating options, and the outdoor area is perfect if you want to enjoy a meal with your furry friend. We’ll definitely be back to try more pizza flavors! 🐾🍕
Went on a last-minute whim, and it turned out to be one of the best dining experiences I’ve had. The wait was long but absolutely worth it….The koshihikari arancini were crisp on the outside and creamy inside, the Taleggio Scarpinocc was rich and silky with the perfect balance of cheese and sauce, and the mais pizza had a smoky sweetness that paired beautifully with the charred crust. We ended with the velvety, indulgent dark chocolate budino. The PERFECT finish! A good portion of the menu is vegetarian, and everything was incredibly flavorful. Highly recommend!
Very eclectic menu and great intimate atmosphere. Hard to make a reservation, so plan in advance (took us a few months to finally land a date). We ordered the Juniper Tortelloni with duck, and Corn Meal Sachetti with Huitlacoche to share with two starter dishes: the Halibut crudo was great also. Highly recommend.
We’ve had dinner here around 10 times in the past few years, mainly for the taleggio scarpinocc (a must order every time we come), but also to try the new creative pastas that change with seasonal ingredients and inspiration from various cuisines! As a result, we always order a la carte to try as many pastas as possible :) From this recent visit, some standout new pastas included the corn meal sachetti (such a cool use of huitlacoche) and juniper tortelloni (love the combo of cherries with the duck flavor!) If I had room for it, the black pepper bucatini was also intriguing to me, especially with the use of Szechuan peppercorn (one of my favorite spices!!) We also distinctly remember the use of salsa macha in pastas during our last visit. TLDR; taleggio scarpinocc is old reliable, but innovative pasta flavors keep us coming back time and time again over other Italian restaurants in the city. Attached photos are from various visits over the past few years :)
So I did not actually eat here. I ordered it through DoorDash or whatever service. That’s a lie, my mom ordered it for me. I cannot comment on their service or environment but I’m sure it is pretty good. I liked the wings. They had a great sauce on them and cooked well. I also liked the pizza. We got three pizzas and all were great. The dough is really good and the pizza is prepared how I usually like my pizza. That is thin but then a crunchy and thicker crust. Toppings and pizza was good. I’m pretty sure they do pasta as well which I should have tried. I like Italian food so I might be a bit bias towards this one. Anyways, solid place. I’m writing this a day later so I’m trying my best to remember. I am sitting outside a Thai place so we’ll see how this goes. Great food.
From the wait staff, all the way to the chefs, you can tell a lot of care and thought was put into each and every aspect of the meal. We loved every bite and am counting the days until we can be back!! Also heard their pizzerias are phenomenal so looking for a chance to visit one of those soon too!
Went for a birthday party and was pleasantly surprised at how full I got because everything was so good and I kept wanting to eat more pasta until I couldn’t. Food was paired with wine for a lil extra but well worth it. Staff was very attentive and kept the meals coming! Would recommend this place for sure!

We got the Scarpinocc and Farfalle pastas as well as the Salumi pizza. The Scarpinocc pasta was definitely the best; the basalmic vinegar cut the richness of the dish perfectly. The pasta was a bit too firm for me though. I know it was al dente, but it was to the point it tasted more stale than anything. The Farfalle was forgettable and sub par. The pizza was really good and we loved the dough. The service was great and the vibe was lovely.
Flour + water serves good food, good service, yet still feels overrated. After being open for several years, reservations are still a challenge, and the return for your money is not there. Some of the dishes were good but nothing stood out as mind blowing, and the music was so loud it was hard to talk sometimes. Highlights were the yellowfin tuna crudo, Arancini and budino, but the porchetta, the chicory salad and the pavlova were a disappointment.
I came with family for a birthday celebration. we did not do the tasting menu. the summer squash was good but it is literally JUST squash and some jam. The pizza was also really good but it actually got amazing with the pastas. the pastas were EXCELLENT. we did the basil and the tagilottele. If i were to come back, I would get a different appetiser and maybe skip the pizza. even if you order a la carte, the servers will bring out everything like it is a tasting menu in a specific order. we thought all the servers were kind except one who was noticeably passive aggressive and while they would smile to other customers, they were very cold to us for seemingly no reason. when we called them over to ask for more wine at one point, they came 2-3 minutes later and simply stood next to the table looking at us dead in the eye waiting for a response which was extremely confusing and uncomfortable. other than this poor experience, the food and other servers were excellent.
Good, not blown away. Servers were attentive and helpful. Pasta shapes were creative and al dente, but not as chewy as I prefer. Haddock crudo were fresh and delicate, though a bit oily. Duck pasta had a BBQ note that overpowered the dish. Scarpinocc were interesting but monotonous. Pork sugo was the standout - only dish I’d order again. Chocolate dessert nailed the balance of dark chocolate and salt, worth a repeat. Ambience is low-lit and romantic, but open windows made it chilly, classic SF. On par with other good (and often cheaper) Italian spots like Tailor’s Son. I’d return, but wouldn’t rush. Attire: smart casual. Great for a date. Pro tip: get the bread to soak up the sauce.

Excellent food presentation--Instagram-worthy! \n\nBut it's about $80 per person for just pizza and pasta (no drinks ). The pasta was very salty, and honestly, the quality doesn't match the price.
Great service but the food was so so.\nNot worth the wait or prices.\n\nI wanted to like this place, but there is nothing special about the menu. I could make the same food at home.

Tried the $139 pasta tasting menu. Overall okay with some interesting pasta combos (crab and kelp; brown butter and ginger) but most weren’t too special or don’t enjoy, like the weird prosciutto and parmigiana tortellini in broth. Overpriced and overhyped. Would consider coming back to try à la cart menu pizzas or pastas but it’s quite busy.
Legendary spot but under delivered on service. I thought the food was absolutely delicious, but the portions were small and that paired w the less than attentive service made for an underwhelming experience. My fancy pasta budget will be going to Belotti in Oakland in the future: similar vibe tho a little more classic than trendy and more attentive service Menu highlights: veal tartare was stand out and both pastas were solid
